With six years at the same architecture firm, Steve Cannella has attained a level of experience not typical of other architects in training. He began his internship with Panto-Ulema while obtaining his Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago. Upon graduation, he accepted a full-time position at Panto-Ulema and has since become one of two Project Managers working under the direct supervision of Architect, Homan Wong. Steve has managed a variety of projects from restaurant & bar build-outs to ground-up institutional buildings during his employment at Panto-Ulema. The project scales and small firm size have given him the opportunity to design and manage whole building systems while enhancing his 3D rendering skills. Steve has also collaborated with larger firms such as Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB), Lucien Lagrange, and Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM). During 2006-2007 Steve worked alongside both SCB and Lucien Lagrange gaining experience in a large firm environment while learning the importance of inter-office collaboration While having considerable experience in early planning and development stages, Steve has worked on projects during all phases of design and construction. He has a strong focus in hospitality design and manages 5 or more commercial projects annually. His projects have ranged in size from 1,000 square feet to more than 23,000 square feet and he has supervised projects from inception to completion. Each design has met the client’s design and aesthetic requirements, and he employs the theory of using best practices within the limitations of a realistic budget. Steve’s 3D renderings have won him praise from clients & colleagues. His renderings have been featured in Architectural Record Magazine, as well as other advertising media. He recently produced renderings for the Regional Transit Authority, which will be part of a larger campaign to improve Chicagoland transit systems. Steve has been a LEED Accredited Professional since 2009. He recently completed his IDP training units and is preparing to take the ARE 4.0 in 2011.

The owner of this café-style Thai restaurant had a limited budget but wanted a space that was big on style. A minimalist design aesthetic was a way to keep cost down while chromatic color variances made the space appear coherent.

The owner of this property wanted to update the facade to reflect the restaurant’s interior theme. Classical cues were drawn upon when creating a new face for this oldworld Italian establishment. The approach was to make the two buildings appear as one unified facade. EXISTING

Clever use of a long and narrow storefront to create an interplay of indoor and outdoor spaces. The large expanse of glass allowed for the back wall to act as a billboard. The objective was to create a trendy environment while maintaining a culturally neutral identity.

WAKAMONO DINING ROOM

With its clean lines and wood materials, the renovation and expansion of this popular night spot in the Lakeview neighborhood is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Japanese Minka. This repeat client has turned a single-bay sushi restaurant into four individually themed spaces. Wang’s Lounge was one of two additions, a recreation of a 1930’s Shanghai opium den.

The project started out as a 4,100 sf Indo-Chinese fusion restaurant but quickly grew into two restaurants that are served by one interconnected kitchen. The build out totaled 7,150 sf by the end of the project. While many functions of food prep are shared, there are three separate cook lines to accommodate the two restaurants’ different cuisines. The second phase of the renovation was the exterior facelift and new signage for mall tenants. This entailed working closely with the village and attending multiple Zoning and Planning meetings to bring the project to fruition. SECTION AT ENTRY

Hotel X was a concept intended to create a standard of design criteria for the client’s differently branded hotels. The architecture drew upon clean lines and simple guestures that could easily be altered to keep up with ever changing trends.

As part of ongoing updates at this hotel, I have worked closely with the Best Western Design department following the Design Guidelines set forth by the organization. The entryway addition was proposed as a visual break along the dated facade to keep the hotel up to date with Best Western requirements.

Updating the public toilets was the second phase of the renovation. Most of the budget had been allocated for the custom millwork in the lobby. To keep costs down, fixtures and wood profiles were chosen as stock items.

The oddly shaped space was previously part of the hotel lobby. This boutique asian dumpling restaurant was inspired by the steamer in which the dumplings are served. The basket weave walls and ceilings are meant to invoke the feeling of being inside the vessel, while the red accents are decidedly Chinese.

The new house will feature green building design practices, such as a geothermal heating and cooling system, parking area with permeable paving, and locally produced building materials. Low maintenance, high performance building systems were at the heart of the design, however a classic collegiate building style had to be upheld. The house will accommodate 60 scholars.

Expansion and complete renovation of the historic structure within the South Quad at Northwestern’s Evanston campus. The renovated house is sensitive to the original architect’s design and is accessible, energy efficient, and provides a secure and comfortable living environment for 45 scholars.

Detailed interior Construction Documents and a complete FF&E package was produced. Everything from beds and sofas to window treatments and custom Egyptian area rugs were included in the documents. The process was highly coordinated between the client, multiple vendors, manufacturers, installers, and even the scholars themselves. Given the historic nature of the house, many items required customization which added a level of complexity to the process.

Public spaces and dorm rooms were rendered and used as part of a fundraising campaign which helped the The Evans Scholars Foundation raise over $5,000,000 to fund the project.

Natural stones like slate & terrazzo were used throughout the house.

Portions of previously exterior walls were cleaned and left exposed on all levels, including select dorm rooms. Wherever possible, replacement millwork and other features were recreated to mimic aspects of the original design.

SINGLE FAMILY HOME

Ginkgo Planning & Design teamed with Panto-Ulema to produce images for the future of Chicagoland’s planning and transit systems. A set of futuristic building prototypes was built in Sketchup and given to Ginkgo to place in their scenes. The goal was to show a healthy mix of current building types while evoking ideas of what the future may hold.

Once placed in the scenes, the initial plan-derived buildings looked too boxy. Adjustments were made using nonlinear massing to add interest. This resulted in whimsical building shapes and skin treatments. Vibrant pastel tones were used in the final renderings to paint a picture of a light and airy future. 10 STORY RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

Panto-Ulema collaborated in a graphic support role with Skidmore Owings and Merrill for the Bahrain National Planning Strategy. In all, ten street scenes were rendered under their leadership. Layers of future development were placed over photographs of existing street districts. This allowed for “before and after scenes to be part of the presentation.

Digital displays on Dime Pier would have been part of the spectacle of the games, giving light shows to the visitors of Navy Pier across the way.

At the time when the Dime Pier renderings were commissioned, the Chicago Spire had just broken ground.

The 31st Street Harbor was imagined as a place of vibrant activity during the games and as a lasting addition to Chicago’s lakefront park system for years to come.

A plane and a helicopter were used to photograph the necessary images to render the aerial view of the 31st Street Olympic Harbor & lakefront improvements.

South Gate Tower Synergy Center

Project Right: South Gate Tower

Location: South Loop Programs Used: Sketchup, Photoshop

This design problem entailed finding a vacant piece of property within Chicago city limits and creating a plan to develop the site to its full potential allowed by Zoning. South Gate Tower was situated at the corner of Harrison and Wells. The development included two loft style residential buildings, retail spaces along the riverwalk, and a 56 story mixed-use tower based on a rotated geometry, allowing for setbacks and a sky atrium.

PAG E 3 8 Project: Synergy Center

Location: River North Programs Used: 3D Studio Max, Photoshop

As a part of PD-325, the site spans two city blocks. The Kinzie St bridge is designed to connect retail, parking, and hotel-condo functions while allowing for a large of expanse of south facing facade to be clad with photovoltiac-impregnated glass.

Synergy Center is a fusion of technology and luxury. It encompasses 82,000 sq ft of retail, 162 hotel-condo units, 496 condominiums, 700 parking spaces, and a structural height of 1010 ft. Not only is the scale of the project grand, its technical innovations are as well. A double skin facade make the building energy efficient, while photovoltaic glass and 275 aeroturbines turn it into a powerhouse right in the heart of the city. The outcome is Chicago’s fourth tallest building, while also being the most technologically advanced.
