All Decked Out
Introducing 4 Curtis Street This well presented character house, built in the 1920’s, offers you the opportunity to purchase in a very desirable location on the boundaries of the city end of Karori, Northland and Kelburn. The one and a half storey house offers an open plan living area on the top level to maximise sun, views and privacy. The deck from this room is one of three indoor/outdoor areas, and is the perfect place to relax after the pressures of city life, family life or university study. Original gorgeous ceilings and roses are another highlight - and reminder of the architecture and workmanship of the era. The three double bedrooms are well proportioned, the master bedroom being very spacious and offering lovely views and easy living. The second bedroom is a good double and the third bedroom offers the privacy of the lower level for teenagers, flatmates or possible home office.
Tastefully redecorated, using a combination of neutral colours, polished floors and new carpet. The west facing property rewards the short and easy walk up from the street with privacy, a pleasant view of the valley below and good sun. The back garden is steep and offers limited potential as it is currently land-locked; however it does offer a large area for pets or for children to create their own adventures and memories. Just a stone’s throw from the main road and Appleton Park, close to amenities and the bus route, less than a two kilometre flat walk to the historic Wellington Cable Car, no 4 is zoned for Wellington College and Northland School, with Cardinal McKeefry just down the other end of the street. With the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary so close the birdlife is amazing - imagine sharing your morning coffee with the tuis! With such a sought after location, between three of Wellington’s most sought after suburbs, this home is a must for professionals, small families and investors.

The suburb of Northland Northland is a relatively compact and sought after suburb nestled on the western hills just above the Botanical Gardens. Being just an easy twenty minute downhill walk, or five minute drive, to The Terrace and central city, well serviced by a kindergarten and schools, close to Victoria University and with a local shopping centre – it is very popular with professionals and families alike. Many parts of Northland enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views of the city and harbour out to Eastbourne, the airport and Cook Strait. The suburb is surrounded by beautiful native bush and reserve land and can be truly appreciated from the Stellin Memorial Park lookout on Orangi Kaupapa Road. The views can also be appreciated from the Northern Walkway, one of the six major walkways in Wellington, which meanders through Northland onto Wadestown and eventually to Johnsonville. Central to Northland’s community is the Northland Memorial Community Centre in Woburn Road, which offers a wide range of activities including; badminton, youth drop in centre, rock and roll, scouts, Moving to the Beat (for preschoolers), Ezee Meals, mahjong, creche, pilates, lions, book club, basket ball, after school care and more.

The suburb of Karori
The suburb of Kelburn
Karori is the largest suburb in Wellington. It is situated in the hills west of and behind the city’s centre, just an easy ten minute drive from central Wellington. Karori is surrounded by hills with many houses built on these hills. Several embassies are based in Karori.
Kelburn sits in the dress circle, just above the city and next to the Botanical Gardens, an easy five minute drive from The Terrace and centre of Wellington. Built on the western hills the suburb offers panoramic views of the city and the ever changing harbour. There is a mixture of beautifully restored historic villas and newer housing integrated by lovely established gardens.
People love living in Karori - it has a very strong sense of community. Karori offers an extensive range of community organisations as well as a new library, children’s parks and playgrounds, new swimming pool complex, several schools, childcare facilities, sports venues, golf course, religious institutions, cafes and restaurants as well as two shopping centres. It is well serviced by the dental and medical professions. The actual name Karori is derived from the Maori “Karore” meaning snare ropes and the area was well known to the Maori as a bird trapping area. Karori is home to a number of attractions: Wright’s Hill is at the top of one of the Karori hills and is lovely to visit on a clear day with its view across Karori and all the way out to the Wellington Harbour. You can also view where the large guns were installed in 1944 to protect the approx 6,500 people that then inhabited Karori. These guns were big enough to attack any warships approaching Wellington. The guns were not fired until trial shots in 1946, and were never fired again. They were sold to Japan in 1960. Towards the end of Karori is Makara, which is basically farmland and a pebbled seashore - which is almost always deserted. Also located here is the Makara Peak Mountainbike Park, which started construction in 1998 and now has over twenty kms of graded tracks. At the entrance to Karori is the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary which was opened in 2000 and provides a pest free habitat for New Zealand’s wildlife. It offers some lovely picnic spots and walking tracks and the opportunity to get close to nature and discover some rare species of birds that are native to New Zealand. Karori Village also boasts the wonderful Karori Centre with its new and modern two storey library and community centre including the Arobake cafe which is a popular place for locals to meet.
Kelburn is well serviced by a well appointed shopping centre, cafes, school, park and sports centre and is close to the Victoria University campus which is graciously spread over several hectares on the edge of the city. The well appointed shopping centre includes several cafes and restaurants, gift shop, dairy, fruit and video shop, beautician and fashion shop. Just a brief distance from the shopping centre is the historic Wellington Cable Car which runs every ten minutes to Lambton Quay. The Cable Car was built over a four year period from 1898 utilising prison labour from the Terrace Gaol. From 1902 it was used as a means of transport to the farmland in Kelburn. City workers often come up to Kelburn in the Cable Car from the city and wander to one of the cafes for a leisurely lunch. Just on the edge of Kelburn are the Botanical Gardens. Established in 1868 the gardens feature 25 hectares of unique landscape, protected native forest, conifers, specialised plant collections and stunning views over Wellington. There is a regular programme of summer events and concerts, and the cafe, located in the rose garden, is open most days.
Bus service All three suburbs are well serviced by the public bus service with buses running regularly to and from the city.
Schools Northland is zoned for Northland School, Karori for Karori Normal School and Kelburn for Kelburn Normal School. Samuel Marsden Collegiate School is a private girls school and the only high school in the area. Northland, Kelburn and Karori are all zoned for Wellington College.
