BROOKLYN ORIGINAL CHARACTER HOME WITH POTENTIAL

Introducing 40 Karepa St, Brooklyn

No 40, in very popular Karepa Street, is just waiting for new owners to unleash their creative juices and restore it to its former beauty. The brick house has great, solid bones! It is built on a large section which enjoys absolutely fabulous views over the city, harbour and out to Petone and Eastbourne. The view during the day, and at night with all the twinkling lights of the city, is quite breath-taking and the house enjoys fantastic all day sun which sets late in the day in the back garden. Built in the early 1900s the house is a good size at 110 m2. It features two very large bedrooms at the front, with fabulous views over the city, a separate living and kitchen/dining area plus a bathroom and two other single bedrooms.

Unleash your creative juices

High studs, gorgeous timber floors, lead lights, bay window, timber doors and windows - and picture rail are all reminders of the workmanship of yesteryear. There is easy access to the house via a concrete path over the sloping front lawn to the front door, with gorgeous lead light panels, and the spacious entrance area. At the rear of the house is an almost flat section that could be developed into garden or perhaps that promised vegetable garden. A separate structure at the back of the house could be developed into a hobby area, another bedroom or removed to open up into great indoor/outdoor flow. This would also open up the view across to the hills behind Brooklyn. The possibilities are endless!

Large bedrooms fit for a king!

A spacious entrance area provides access to the bedrooms and living room. The two main bedrooms are at the front of the house and the view from these rooms is fabulous! Both rooms feature gorgeous ceilings, stunning polished floors, lead light windows and enjoy fantastic morning sun. They have a sense of the elegance of the bygone era! Both main bedrooms have built in wardrobes. There is a smaller single bedroom next to the master bedroom that could also be perfect as perhaps a baby’s room or home office.

BROOKLYN ORIGINAL CHARACTER HOME WITH POTENTIAL

The suburb of Brooklyn Brooklyn was established in 1852 by John Fitchett senior as a dairy farm and given the name “Fitchett.” In 1988 Brooklyn adjoined Fitchett and was extended up the Brooklyn hill by Alfred Miles. After Brooklyn Road was cut through the town belt by Central Park, its development increased rapidly. An electric tramway was introduced in 1906. It is named after a borough in New York City, which in turn is named after the Dutch city Breukelen. A number of streets are names after former US Presidents: Cleveland Street after Grover Cleveland, Coolidge Street after Calvin Coolidge and Washington Street after George Washington to name but a few. Today Brooklyn has a friendly and vibrant atmosphere with many young families living in it – but also retains its identity as an older suburb with timber villas and varied architecture. It is located just 3km above the CBD on the eastern hills above Happy Valley and offers great views to the city, harbour and airport. It is a very popular suburb due to its proximity to the city and the services and amenities it offers. It even has its own street festival in late November, which epitomises the community spirit in the suburb!

Central Park

site, 299 meters above sea level, provides spectacular panoramas of the city, Cook Straight and the upper South Island. It is the oldest operating wind turbine in New Zealand.

Hawkins Hill Hawkins Hill is another of Brooklyn’s peaks and is a landmark due to the prominent radar station used for aircraft flight control and associated communications.

Bike Tracks There are a number of great bike tracks around Brooklyn including the track to Brooklyn windmill and on Hawkins Hill.

Entertainment and Restaurants Brooklyn is home to Penthouse Cinema, located on Ohiro Road just south of Cleveland Street. It was constructed for the Ranish family in the art deco style, and opened on 15 June 1939 as the Vogue Theatre. The Ranish family ran the theatre until 1951. Today it is a popular and thriving theatre and casual restaurant and bar. There are also a number of popular restaurants in Brooklyn including The Golden Lotus and The Cornerstone as well as several takeaway bars.

Brooklyn is separated from the city by Central Park, named after the park of the same name in New York. The park was established in 1913. There are a set of wrought iron gates as the main entrance that were presented to then Mayor, John Pearce Luke in 1920.

Library

During the war between 1942 and 1944 an American military camp was established in the park. By 1943 the camp could accommodate 540 personnel.

Renouf Tennis Centre

Elliot Park

Brooklyn has its own branch library which opened in 1905 in Harrison Street. Its entrance is now in Cleveland Street. The original building is now the Brooklyn Playcentre.

The Renouf Centre is located on Brooklyn Road and is home to a number regular international events including Davis Cup and Fed Cup. The Centre is also available for everyone and anyone to use.

Elliot Park is located at the western side of Brooklyn, adjacent to Mitchell and Karepa Streets. The park has a children’s playground.
