The suburb of Ngaio Ngaio is located just over 3kms from the city centre and it generally only takes about 10 minutes to get there. It is one of the sunniest suburbs in Wellington and is a very popular suburb for families. Ngaio and Khandallah are neighbouring suburbs and behind them is Mt Kaukau – which rewards those who walk the Mt KauKau track with spectacular views over the city and harbour. Nagio houses are generally 1960’s weatherboard houses and there is also a small area of railway cottages called the Tarikaka Settlement which were built in the 1920s. There is also new development in Ngaio. Ngaio and Khandallah were settled at the same time – and both have street names from the Indian subcontinent. Prior to 1908 Ngaio was a logging community and became part of the Wellington City Council in 1919. Ngaio takes its name from the native tree called the Ngaio. Ngaio’s village is very popular and well serviced by Villa Café, a good library, pharmacy, petrol station, boutique clothes shop and Indian take away shop. There are also a lot of parks and reserves, tennis club, churches and schools. It is well serviced by a main bus route and train service.
