The suburb of Khandallah Khandallah is situated between Ngaio and Johnsonville and just 10 minutes from the CBD. Khandallah was named after the old Khandallah Homestead which was built in 1884 on land gifted by Captain James Andrew for the second railway stop on the Wellington-Manawatu Company Line. When named Captain James Andrew had just arrived from India hence a number of streets in Kandallah have an Indian name. The name Kandallah means “resting place of god”. Today Khandallah is a wealthy northern suburb offering all the best of suburban living plus being very close to the several shopping centres and the city.
The telephone exchange which can be found in Khandallah Road was finished in 1921 and is the first important public building that was built after the First World War and is the oldest automatic telephone exchange in New Zealand. Khandallah also boasts one of the largest outdoor pools in Wellington, nestled in Khandallah Park the pool is 30 metres long and open over summer months. The park is also home to a cafe and play area for the kids. The suburb is well serviced by a good bus and train service and is a delightful green and leafy suburb with a strong sense of community.
