ISLAND BAY 2 BEDROOM TOWNHOUSE
The suburb of Island Bay Island Bay is an extensive suburb that lies southwest of Wellington on the Cook Strait and seven kilometres from the centre of Wellington. Island Bay has become a very popular suburb and is close to a number of beaches which are ideal for swimming and a range of other activities. Diving is a first class attraction in the area including a New Zealand Navy frigate that was sunk between Island Bay and Houghton Bay in 2005. It is one of the oldest settled areas in Wellington. Prior to the 1900s people used to go there for weekends away by the beach. Before the Europeans settled in Island Bay it was called Mupunga Kaingaa. At the centre of Island Bay is the village with a wide range of amenities including a mid-sized supermarket, the famous Island Bay butcher (for his sausages!), a library and a number of cafes and restaurants. It also has a number of parks, several primary schools and pre-schools, six churches, a skate board park, several walking tracks and a medical centre. The area is served by an excellent bus service. Also located in Island Bay is the historic Empire Theatre which has recently been completely refurbished and converted into three boutique cinemas with luxury seating and a fully licensed bar and cafe. The area is home to a number of famous people including painter John Drawbridge, poet Alan Brunton and historian Bruce Stewart.
