Thank you for joining us on this spectacular evening (excuse the pun). Young adults and teenagers have talked me once again into supporting them to produce and coordinate this successful event. It is more than a great pleasure to help them. They have all played key roles, taking on the great responsibility of organising each element of the event to deliver everything you see around you tonight.

Tonight’s winner will have a once in a lifetime chance to perform at Jersey Live - WOW! I would like to say thank you to the judges and all that have made this evening possible and you know who you are! Let’s raise the roof for the much-needed unit in Southampton and give every teenager and young adult with this devastating condition access to a teenage cancer trust unit, as this is our aim. Thank you wholeheartedly for your continued support, lots of love,

The night will astound you – over the last four months we have searched the island and seen some amazing performers. These talented teenagers will battle it out to win your vote. The judges will then select the winner from the top three with the most votes.

teenage cancer trust’s mission Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK and Channel Island’s charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the six young people diagnosed with cancer everyday.

Teenage Cance r Trust has open ed a two bed interim faci lity in Southam pton. Until the new Teenag e Cancer Trust unit is built, teenagers with cancer are trea ted on baby wards or in the adult wards, us ually with the elderly.

ities ble facil the a it u s o With n rs from teenage ave to , y ll a c lo h l Islands Channe outhampton S travel to ent. m t a for tre Money raised from tonight’s event will go towards the £2million needed to develop a Teenag e Cancer Trust unit in Southampto n.

Without the work of Teenage Cancer Trust young people with cancer would be treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives. Neither of these environments are appropriate for young people with cancer which is why we develop specialist Teenage Cancer Trust units within NHS hospitals. One of our key aims is the development of a specialist Teenage Cancer Trust unit at Southampton General Hospital. This ten bed unit will mean for the first time that young cancer patients from Jersey, will be treated with others their own age, in an environment suited to their needs. Money raised from the Spring Spectacular will go towards developing the new unit in Southampton and developing services for young people with cancer in Jersey.

special thanks to: Laura Stevens Laura has recently moved with her family to Jersey from New York City where she co-founded Manhattan Children’s Theatre, a non-profit organisation with a mission of providing affordable, high quality theatrical entertainment to children. She has served over 250,000 audience members with their productions of both classical and contemporary literature. She is gearing up for her third production at the Arts Centre - a musical adaptation of the beloved fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm - Rapunzel. Shows run from 16 - 23 June. Laura has been involved with Teenage Cancer Trust here in Jersey for the past 2 years. She is passionate about the mission of the charity and is utterly inspired by the courage and strength of the local teens she has met that are challenged with the disease, and is honoured to have worked with hundreds of other local teens that continue to give their time, talents, and support to their peers. Because of them, Laura has witnessed the moving of mountains.

Rachael - AnnE Jones Rachel-Anne has been lucky enough to spend her whole life working in the professional world of Dance and Theatre. She performed as a singer/dancer/soloist and on major cruise lines where she not only took on the roles of Dance Captain and Soloist, but also as Singer and Entertainments Officer. Rachel-Anne has worked with personalities such as Robin Cousins (Dancing on Ice), Rolf Harris and Bradley Walsh (Coronation Street), to name just a few, whilst choreographing and directing major pantomimes in the UK. Most notably, she worked with Donelda Guy and her Dancing Dogs for Britain’s Got Talent 2011. This is the 3rd Teenage Cancer Trust event that Rachel-Anne has been involved in, and she is pleased to support this very worthy charity.

Calvin Hi I’m Calvin; I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia when I was 14 years old. I was told by doctors that my treatment would be three and half years long. Obviously this was hard to take in, being so young with a promising future ahead of me. The prospect of that being taken away from me was difficult to come to terms with.

Chemotherapy was the worst thing I have ever been through in my life. This was made more difficult as I was not able to have the treatment here in Jersey. It was hard having the chemotherapy but travelling back and forth to Southampton made it twice as bad. Worst of all was getting up a 5am to catch the red eye flight and flying back the same day when you feel really sick. I received my chemotherapy on a child’s cancer ward which was totally unsuitable for teenagers and young adults. The wards were decorated with Winnie-the-Pooh and there were lots of babies crying.

All I wanted was to feel like I was at home as much as possible, but on the children’s ward that cannot be achieved. But now with the help of Teenage Cancer Trust they are building a teenage cancer unit in Southampton which will provide specialist care for teenagers who suffer from cancer. The money being raised means we can pay for these amazing facilities to be built and fund specialist staff. This will give teenagers in Jersey like me the best possible chance of survival.

the judges Warren Holt & Warren Le Sueur After cutting their teeth as DJs and promoters since the early 90s in Jersey, pioneering the dance music scene, in 2004 they decided to join forces and create Jersey Live – the first internationally recognised music festival in Jersey. The “Warrens” have managed to bring over world renowned artists such as The Prodigy, Paul Weller, Snow Patrol, Kasabian, Madness and Plan B amongst many others, and this year will bring more top drawer artists for the main stage bill. Jersey Live grows from strength to strength year on year and this year’s event promises to be another spectacular occasion.

Ivor Richards From leaving school Ivor worked in the music industry as a technician at a major recording and broadcast audio manufacturer/installer. Given his interest in music as a teenager and emerging connections with a local youth centre Ivor chose to switch tracks and train as a professional Youth Development Worker back in the late 80s. Ivor has kept a hand in the music industry performing in numerous bands as well as providing location recording services at the UK’s major festivals, working with artists as diverse as Herbie Hancock to Michael Ball, Vampire Weekend to Yes, Amy Winehouse to The Wailers. Ivor came to Jersey in 2007 to bring together his music, performance and youth work skills in their purest form, developing youth arts programmes for the Island’s teenagers. His ambition is to ensure that every young person living in Jersey grows up having had the “La Motte Street experience” whether as a member of the many audiences the Centre entertains, or as a participant in the many dance, drama and music events it contributes to.

21

Helen Racjan In 2003 Helen was invited to join the Jersey Eisteddfod Dance Committee as their Secretary and she administers the entries for the Jersey Eisteddfod Dance Section every two years at the Jersey Opera House. This means she has working relationships with all of the local dance schools in Jersey and in Guernsey. Through this experience Helen was approached by John Grimshaw of Dance World Cup Limited to become their administrator/event co-ordinator for the Dance World Cup competition. This is an annual event which takes place in a different country each year whereby children and young adults from all over the world attend a week long competition to perform in their genre of dance. In 2011, Helen successfully co-ordinated her first ever competition in Disneyland Paris, France with 1,800 competitors from 23 countries. This year the competition takes place in Villach, Austria and with entries recently submitted there are 2,000 children taking part in this year’s event. This is all boding well for the 2013 Dance World Cup competition which will be hosted in Brighton, England.
