FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS

IMPROVED POWDER PALATABILITY (FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS) We have improved the palatability and taste of many of our strongest products such as Skratch, FlyFree, Laminitis Prone Powder, Movefree and Alphabute. The liquid products are very palatable and ideal for fussy feeders. Our supplements are mixed in with your horse’s normal feed. Most formulas are best fed twice daily for optimum results, although can be fed once a day. They may taste a little unusual to your horse at first so always introduce gradually, mixing in well, dampening with water and perhaps adding a suitable flavouring like our apple treats, apple puree or mint cordial. Many people add molasses but remember this is not good for every horse. Some of our blends are available in syrup form and these are palatable to almost every horse but are at the same time a little weaker than straight powders. ‘Instant’ is a convenient concentrated form of SuperCalm which works in 1-3 hours and lasts for over half a day. It is useful in any horse. Use for performance horses that lose nervous energy before exercise. It also helps with stamina and recovery after exercise and can also be used to calm before travel or clipping. The only instant calmer for a strong body and strong mind. Useful in a wide variety of situations, even weaning stress in foals. Summary of some uses: 1. Just before you ride out, exercise or compete 2. Just before you travel or load up 3. Clipping and shoeing 4. Just before calling the vet (let them know first) 5. MagCalm Original Powerful formula is back This is the most effective source of magnesium on the market. MagCalm is a very effective mixture of highly digestible chelated (protein bound) magnesium and other minerals. Together these ingredients help muscles work more effectively and promote calm in those horses that become overexcited in a wide variety of situations. For mares that you think are ‘hormonal’ This blend is traditionally used to help maintain balance & comfort in the reproductive system of mares during the breeding season or at any tiime of year. Dear Global Herbs, We purchased our PRE stallion called Brio as an unbroken, self-opinionated and somewhat wayward 4 year old with a distinctly unpleasant attitude. He had been handled but had proved too difficult and time-consuming as a stallion so was turned out with a number of Alpaca’s for company until it could be decided what to do with him. Eventually we backed him and began his slow training under saddle. We wondered whether Global Herbs’ MAGCALM would assist him with coping under the stressful situation at work. This situation may have arisen because of poor health or damage to tendons etc. Being confined without the chance of being in the open or mixing with other horses can be very stressful for any horse. In fact such a situation can slow the process of full recovery and necessitate an even longer period of isolation. BoxRest is designed to use with TurnOut formula on the day of finishing a period of confinement.

Thoroughbred Calmer For fine boned horses

We have found that thoroughbreds respond better in the long term to this more simple mix of herbs without the magnesium that is in SuperCalm. Thorougbred Calmer is a special blend that many owners have found to make all the difference to their horses whether used for a relaxed hack in the country or more competitive situations. Our formula SuperCalm may be ideal for most horses but try this new product if you would like a specific approach for your own thoroughbred. Remember when using this product and others in this chapter to adjust feeding to reduce fizziness and overexcitement that is of concern to you. As with some of our other formulae expect a little more energy for the first 2-3 days until the ‘chill out’ nutrients get through. Presentation:

AntiSuck

For horses that like to suck air This blend is traditionally used to maintain a calm and comfortable stomach. Some horses do get a little uncomfortable in this area and will attempt to fill their stomachs with air to try and get back to normal. This may be particularly noticable after eating hard feed at any time of day because of the discomfort that starts at such times. In other horses there may be no clear link between feeding and behavioural problems. Many nutrients can help horses in such situations but those in ‘AntiSuck’ are particularly effective. Sometimes horses get used to gulping air down and the issue lies in the ‘mind’ but almost always there is a more rational explanation. Get some good advice from your vet and behaviourist and after this you may find that a little ‘AntiSuck’ is a great help for normal stomach acid levels. The use of AntiSuck can help you and your vet decide whether you are dealing with a digestive or a psychological issue. Please note that AntiSuck is an improved form of Acid-X mentioned in the digestive section.

Directions: Feed two 25ml scoops twice daily for a normal horse or as advised by our technical staff.

Sometimes horses may also bite on stable doors or trees and fences. If they are eating wood this may be linked to a lack of minerals and you need to feed GlobalVite.

For Easy Breathing In the summer months the appearance of large swathes of yellow in the fields can fill the heart of horse owners with dread and many different airborne particles start to wreak havoc. Not only do owners start sneezing but their horses have a very hard time as well. Even walking past a lush hedgerow can make things uncontrollable. Supplementation with this traditional blend of plants in syrup or powder form can be a great help. Owners start using it in the spring just as they start to sense the season is changing. It is particularly important to feed such horses correctly to minimize discomfort because repeated exposure to such an environment can result in long term issues that are much more difficult to come to terms with. DUSTY STABLES FORMULA Just like people horses sometimes have a hard time with dusty environments. Sometimes this starts with a mouldy batch of hay or even after your vet has aleady treated a viral condition effectively. When your horse is no longer so good at coping with dusty situations the traditional formula, Dust-X can be a great help. When lungs are affected by dust a horse is not able to work and perform to its full potential. Even in horses that are not high level competitors a slightly tight chest can make life quite tiresome and worrying for you. NOW EXTRA CONCENTRATED AND MORE EFFECTIVE You can use Dust-X on its own or in more difficult situations with the product Weez. On its own Dust-X can be used for long term supplementation or for a short period to help when that bad batch of hay appeared by accident without your knowledge. Which product to use? For good breathing we have found from experience that individual horses respond better when they are fed one of either Dust-X, PolleneX or AirwayPlus. However the products can be combined. Often the only way of really telling which is going to work best is to try one and see. We can tell you specifically which one we think is most likely to be suitable but to a certain extent you need to try the products out yourself. Only by testing them first can you know 100% which is going to be most useful. This is probably because each product in itself is so effective and useful that it will work in a wide variety of situations. For example a horse next to a field of Oil Seed Rape and having problems with an itchy nose should almost always try PolleneX first. However in some individuals AirwayPlus powder could be more useful or the horse may only be comfortable when you use PolleneX with AirwayPlus together. Generally AirwayPlus powder is the best value product and almost all horses will get a lot of benefit from using it. However people who want the best possible result no matter what the cost will more than likely start off by feeding PolleneX with Weez when a rape seed field is close at hand. The Weez provides a great soothing effect which combines well with PolleneX or Dust-X.

WHAT IS A PREBIOTIC? A prebiotic is a product that helps the good micro-organisms in the bowel work better and outgrow less desirable ones. The feeding of grain and concentrates to horses creates many problems because equine stomachs are designed for a grass based diet. Acid-X can transform digestion to enable horses to take in such food much more safely and comfortably. All horses on high grain diets should use Acid-X at a maintenance level.

RagAid is a powerful aid to maintaining liver cells in top working order. Traditionally used as a liver tonic, this improved formula can be used all year round if you are not sure whether your horse is in danger or not. It can also be used when you know your horse has been affected by Ragwort and is under supervision of your local vet. You do not need to use Restore detoxifier when you use this product.

It has been shown recently that around 95% of racehorses and 70% of competition horses on grain based rations have stomach discomfort to some degree and are in need of nutrients such as those used in Acid-X. Presentation:

Fennel

For fussy eaters or those prone to gas Fennel seeds have a relaxing effect if stomach and digestion is gassy or uncomfortable. They can also help with appetite and maintain milk production especially in the first days following foaling. It is traditionally used in gripewater for human babies. Horses know when they need fennel. Offer a handful and see the difference when they are feeling uncomfortable. Also see fennel on P 77. NB: Please consult a vet if your horse has colic or if concerned that your horse may have colic. Presentation:

ClearOut Psyllium

For clean, comfortable bowels Psyllium husks in ClearOut are an excellent bowel cleanser helping keep your horse clear of build up of undesirable material which can cause discomfort and concern. It is used by many vets in the UK when sand & debris build up in the bowel and can be used each year or more regularly throughout the year to ensure total comfort. We also sell pure Psyllium husks for customers that prefer this.

The husk of this plant swells to form a gel which can help soothe bowels and enable sand and other material to be passed in the droppings. It is useful in times of bowel stagnation or looseness and maintains normal function in a wide variety of situations. ClearOut formula contains extra herbs which further help soothe discomfort and is therefore more useful than straight psyllium. Comfy-Tum has traditionally been used as a means of helping bowels stay relaxed if flatulence and spasm are a possibility. In this product the sticky resin has been mixed with 50% rice flour. A wonderful product if used with care.

Vit lavana (Black Salt) is the salt used in the famous traditions of Ayurveda (the science of life in India) and is a great soother of bowel function and itchy skin. Sambar rock salt is heated in an earthenware pot to which herbs such as Terminalia chebula are added. It contains small natural amounts of trace elements such as iron, magnesium and copper and is carminative and tonic to the digestive system.

How to beat flies and itching The complete herbal program 1. Use GlobalVite and FlaxOil as the spring starts (GlobalVite should really be used all year round). This will make body defenses really strong. A little Black Salt each day may also help with skin comfort P45. 2. If your horse is not itching but has trouble with flies use FlyFree in the food. It works in a day or two and also helps soothe fly bites and slightly itchy skin. Works very well with Fly Sheets. Good shops now stock a wide range of great fly sheets – they keep horses cool and comfortable. 3. If your horse is itching – use Skratch products. Best to start 1 month before itching usually starts but you can also strart at any time of the season. Excellent with Boett rugs (or other similar best product) if necessary. 4. Do not use sprays and strong chemicals at all if possible. DEET at low concentrations is very short acting and horses pick up chemicals when they groom each other. 5. For small difficult areas apply Itch cream straight away - you do no need much. The same applys for bites - all horses get bitten occasionally. 6. If your horse is extremely sensitive consider a Boett rug or move him or her to a less fly ridden location (of course this can be difficult). 7. Sensitive horses should be in good protective stabling at the worst times of the day e.g. for midges morning and evening. If using FlyFree the smell of this will build up in the stable nicely.

The wash for itchy feathering in heavy horses FootStamp is a highly concentrated herbal skin wash. The diluted solution helps repel lice, harvest mites and other parasites. It is plant based and safe but should not be used near the eyes. It can be used routinely to keep heavy horses free of discomfort and can be used in a wide variety of situations.

FootStamp is not suitable for a very small number of horses with very sensitive skin so test on a small area of skin the first day to see if there might be a problem later on. Usually areas of white skin and hair are more liable to cause a problem. If in doubt, call our advice line before use.

Mud-X used in the feed gives your horse perfect shiny skin in even the worst conditions. If you worry about skin problems in muddy conditions and want a beautiful glossy coat then Mud-X is the product for you. It can be used at any time of year. Mud-X syrup is designed for routine use when conditions are not too bad – any horse will find it a tasty daily treat. Powdered Mud-X is for when things get bad and you need a stronger solution. Powdered Mud-X can also be used routinely if necessary but is stronger tasting. Bear in mind that skin is also a lot stronger if you use GlobalVite routinely.

Always remember to mix one part FootStamp with 20-50 parts warm water. Apply with sponge and wear plastic gloves. Be very carefull in applying this liquid to your horse for the first one or two times. If applying to the feet catch the run off in a bucket. It may be better to clip the feathering away but this is not always necessary. After application do not allow horse in bright sunlight if feathers are clipped away. During the day it is best washed off in 1-2 hours but can be left on overnight if applied in the evening and washed off in the morning.

Sarc-Ex provides a unique traditional approach to those horses with skin concerns. Often no-one is 100% sure what causes such problems but they are certainly related closely to insect bites and inherent weakness in the body’s natural defences and linked to certain viruses. Our new formulation is specifically designed to help support the immune system in a complete and natural way. A large proportion of the body’s defences are located in the bowels so the first aim is to support the digestive process and make sure bowel lining is as resilient as possible. What are sensitive laminae? Everyone knows that horses can be prone to attacks of laminitis because of rich grass. But what actually are the sensitive laminae in the feet? Compared to humans, horses stand on ‘tip-toe’ like a ballerina. More exactly, horses only stand on one toe and the other toes which humans have, do not exist anymore in the horse. The nail of the one remaining horse’s toe has changed to make the hoof and other toes are only seen in the form of splint bones higher up the leg.

As a liver tonic LPS helps horses digest their food better and supports the liver in its function of detoxifying the body. Almost all laminitis is caused by incomplete digestion of food in the hind gut. This poor digestion results in the release of acids and toxins into the blood which damage the blood vessels that supply the sensitive laminae in the feet. So where do the laminae fit in? You can imagine that there is a lot of pressure on a horse’s feet because of the way it stands on ‘tip toe’. Although the hoof is very strong and large there needs to be some special way of fixing the toe inside the hoof if this is to be a comfortable way of standing. One of the ways horses legs are able to cope with this situation is by having sensitive and insensitive laminae layers which fix the toe in position inside the hoof. Microscopically these layers both look like corregated cardboard and fit firmly together to give great strength. The insensitive laminae are part of the hoof wall and sensitive laminae are made up of blood vessels and nerves which are bound to the soft tissue and the ‘toe bone’ beneath. In this way the bone of the foot is firmly attached to the tough hoof wall. In horses prone to laminitis the sensitive laminae are prone to damage from toxins released from undigested grass in the gut. These toxins pass through the blood vessels of the sensitive laminae which may then be badly affected. The trick then for laminitis prone horses is to improve digestion so that no toxins are released when rich food is eaten.

How to keep your horse ‘sound’ We can summarise the basic strategy for all horses by saying:

Minerals in the diet are extremely important for the development and maintenance of trouble free joints. Normal diets usually never contain enough for every horse that eats them. Pasture is almost always deficient and joints then become fragile, See P73.

MSM (Methyl Sulphonyl Methane). Our vet Stephen Ashdown first used MSM for tendon and joint problems in 1987. He was amazed at how it helped resolve his client’s equine problems and has used it ever since.

2. Support strong bones with herbs. It is good to use StrongBone at a low level on a routine basis in all horses. This is particularly important if you are concerned about the hock joints. A scoop a day keeps trouble at bay P58.

Most importantly MSM is an essential form of sulphur found in most plants. Naturally occurring in pasture, it is important for the maintenance of strong joints in all horses, young and old, retired and competing. Older horses and those working and competing very hard will find it particularly useful. A great deal of important MSM and sulphur nutrition is lost during the manufacturing process of concentrate feed so that a little MSM is a vital addition to most diets. Often horses just cannot get enough sulphur from pasture and manufactured feed. MSM along with GlobalVite for all the other minerals and vitamins, naturally helps maintain your horse’s joints and tendons in good working order, keeping them comfortable and strong.

3. Feed herbs to support synovial fluids which feed the inside of joints that may need some help. Use of Movefree Joint supplement as part of a basic strategy. Movefree liquid, MovefreePlus or Movefree Maintenance contain all that you need. You do not need glucosamine with this approach P57. 4. Use soothing herbs which calm joints down and support natural circulation when all is not going well. Herbal rubs like Joint/Muscle rub can also help a lot. Why are minerals important? Everybody seems to know something about vitamins and how important they are – for example vitamins C & E. However fewer people understand the need for minerals such as zinc, copper and manganese, to name but a few. Most of us know that calcium is important for our bones and iron for our blood but how important are all the other minerals that our body and our horse’s body uses? We want to emphasise on this page that issues concerning minerals are actually the most common cause of ‘poor condition’, mysterious complaints and movement problems in the UK. Vitamins are vital of course but do not worry us nearly so much as mineral balance. Mineral balance issues often go unnoticed in horses and other more dramatic signs that occur later are noticed first and not associated with shortages that may be at the root of the problem. Lack of awareness of the importance of minerals is also connected to the fact there have, to date, been very few supplements, foods or licks which are absorbable enough to make any significant difference to affected horses.

WHAT ARE ANTI-OXIDANTS ANYWAY? It is quite trendy these days to talk about antioxidants and free radicals. However it is unfortunately difficult to find anyone who can explain what they are very clearly and why they are important. Perhaps we can help: It is easiest to think of your horse as being composed of millions of cells in which lots of chemical reactions are going on. These chemical reactions are what makes the body ‘work’ and can be thought of as little fires in each cell. When a horse or person is healthy these little fires glow away merrily making the body warm and making sure the body works well. When a horse is stressed, not well or old, the fires do not burn as quietly as they did before. The fires burn less efficiently and pop and crackle like a bonfire, spitting out sparks (free radicals). These sparks that are generated are actually quite dangerous and just like they can burn holes in a carpet at home they can damage the cells in the body. The body’s way of putting out sparks is by the use of antioxidants (firefighters). When there are millions and millions of such sparks (free radicals) the body gets damaged and the immune system becomes weak; aging becomes more marked and disease is more likely.

As animals get older, the levels of natural antioxidants (firefighters) in the body become less and less. So ‘sparks’ produced from chemical reactions in the body can be called ‘Free radicals’ – they damage or ‘oxidize’ things that they come in contact with like DNA inside cells. What the body usually does to protect itself is release antioxidants (firefighters), which absorb the sparks and make them harmless.

The picture attached was taken at the end of March, after a long and cold winter. He has only had access to a field a few hours a week due to wet fields. Jacqui & Jo Jo, Diareeze, February 2012 Hi to all at Global herbs, just wanted you to know that I think your product ‘Diareeze’ is absolutely fantastic. I thought I would be throwing more money down the drain but the girl in the store was so positive about your product that I decided to buy. I am so glad I did because within a couple of days my old mare was quite firm which meant no more having to wash her back end and legs down in zero temperatures which had not been pleasant for either of us. I’d better tell you about her; I have had her since she was 4 years old and she’s now 28. Every winter over the last three years or so she has been really loose, November to March. I think it’s just due to her age as she’s wormed regularly and healthy in all aspects. Emma & Pep, Alphabute, January 2013 I felt compelled to write to you having recently tried (and subsequently continued using) Alphabute. My horse is 15.1hh Irish Sport Horse called Pep who is now a grand age of 20. I have owned him from a 6 year old and we have had a busy career together, competing up to BE Novice, BS Discovery and BD Elementary. Pep is my pride and joy and therefore always deserves the best! We noticed Pep gradually have problems at the start of 2012 and found he was more affected by the weather and ground conditions, and just generally feeling his age. I was looking for anything to use which could help him maintain comfort and stumbled across recommendations for Global Herbs Alphabute on an online forum. I must admit I was cynical when I bought the first tub, having had little success with other brand herbal products in the past. Initially I gave Pep 2 scoop fulls in his evening feed, and was stunned to feel a difference the next morning! He has been back to his cheeky self and his movement is normal. Bea & Blue, Airway Plus, January 2011 My 14.2hh welsh D cob, Blue, has been one of the most important people in my life for the last 16 years. We first got him as a companion horse to my first mare as he was rescued and labelled ‘damaged’, not interested in working or people, he was very quiet and nervous but in time he became amazing. He would go anywhere and do anything, jump anything and would go to the moon and back for you. He first had issues with his breathing with he was 17 and he was not a happy horse. I was recommended Global Herbs as a good brand and bought a tub of Airways Plus. Two weeks after starting the supplement his breathing rate was normal. A year after he won riding club horse at a pre-county show and then went on to get reserve champion that day. He has been ridden since and has now been responsible for teaching many people to ride and giving lots of people confidence in their riding. He is also still used to give younger horses confidence when out hacking and is the best ride and lead horse I have ever known.
