STYLE OF THE SEASON

Get high this autumn with the return of the quiff, a great look for both men and women. But, if thoughts of Jedward fill you with fear, don’t worry – this quiff is more laid-back, more grown-up and definitely more stylish!
Tapping into fashion’s sixties theme, fringes are still a big trend for autumn. Whether it’s razor-sharp, blunt bangs or a soft, sweeping side fringe, this is a great way to make a style statement. This season’s fringe is feminine, flirtatiously framing the eyes, and is the easiest way to freshen up your look.
Get the look: This look is achieved by taking a diagonal parting before blow-drying. After hair is blow-dried straight, gently scoop the fringe with straighteners at the ends, much like you would when scoring a ribbon. Finish with a holding spray.
Get the look: Some fringes will suit you better than others so always speak to your Blushes stylist first. Do not attempt to cut your own fringe! And don’t forget, once you have had your fringe cut by one of our stylists, you can have it trimmed for free – just call in to one of our salons and we will do our best to accommodate you!

SEVENTIES WAVE
Another key trend for this season is the seventies, and soft, tousled waves sum this look up perfectly. Update yours by adding volume, texture and shine for hair that screams effortless cool.
Get the look: Take small sections of hair, and starting at the root, tong each section with triple-barrelled tongs. Finish with a good hairspray that will hold the style.

Tap into this season’s androgynous trend and don a hat, be it a trilby, a fedora or even a beret. This is one look that applies to both men and women and is a key way to update your look. Hats are the perfect transitional accessory – ideal on chillier days, but pay attention to your hair underneath: hat hair is never a good look!
Forget Heidi – this season’s plaits are altogether more daring, more adventurous and more grown-up. Try plaiting hair loosely to the side and tying with a simple lace or just braid narrow sections through the crown creating height and texture. However you choose to wear your plait, just make sure it’s dishevelled – this is no place for Kirby grips!
Get the look: Style your hair first before putting on your hat – you can do the finishing touches afterwards. Ponytails are a great style to wear under your hat. You could even try tilting your hat to the side for an edgy twist to your look.
Get the look: Gather hair and pull it in front of one shoulder, then loosely plait. When finished, carefully break the plait by teasing it apart with your fingers.

Specially formulated to provide intense nourishment for dry and sensitised hair, this shampoo creates a protective film around hair fibres to prevent dryness. Its complex formula offers deep nutrition to damaged hair while adding softness and shine.
Create a salon blow-dry at home with a good hairdryer. At Blushes we use Head Gear hairdryers which are great for creating lift and body thanks to the nozzle attachment and different speed settings. It also has a cold setting for setting hair and an extra long lead for convenience.
Achieve gloss and shine with this treatment oil which contains a blend of four nourishing oils including conditioning argan oil. Just one pump smoothed onto the ends of towel-dried hair is enough to give you a salon sheen, and it smells pretty gorgeous too!
For a great blow-dry finish, use a ceramic hairbrush. The heat from the hairdryer heats up the ceramic plate making blow-drying quicker and easier, enabling you to achieve greater lift and volume.

TOP TIPS
TOP TIPS
“Shiny, glossy hair is achievable if you follow these 5 simple steps”, says Gary Bushell, manager of Blushes Cirencester
MAKE YOUR HAIR SHINE 1
Deep clean
2
Intensive conditioning
The imperative thing is that you use the correct shampoo and conditioner, so consult with your stylist about the right products for your type of hair. A good tip is to rinse your hair with cold water after shampooing to close the cuticle and keep it looking smooth.
An in-salon treatment will leave your hair in much better condition. These are very intensive treatments which your stylist can advise you about. Hair Botox by L’Oréal (£15) is popular and a good after-colour treatment is L’Oréal Power Dose (£10).
3
At home treatments You can use products like a mask conditioner or a spray-on-and-leave treatment at home. The L’Oréal Asbolut Repair Cellular (£12.80) is very good for fine hair – you just spray it onto wet hair after shampooing and leave it.
4
Styling This is just as important as products when it comes to achieving shine. Use a nozzle on your hairdryer so you can direct air flow from the root to the tips which helps to keep the cuticle flat. Choose a round bristle brush where the bristles are close together to keep the cuticle smooth and make sure you use the right styling product for your hair. Kérastase Elixir Ultime (£33.50) and Morrocanoil (£33.50) both contain argan oil which is great for condition. Run a small amount through the ends of wet hair and then apply your styling aid, such as Pureology Thickening Spray which has heat protector and shine.
5
Finishing touches For ultimate shine for medium to thick hair, use Kérastase Elixir Ultime as an alternative to a serum. For finer hair, finish with a shine spray such as L’Oréal Tecni Art Gloss Control (£9.10) which gives shine as well as hold. All products mentioned are available in Blushes salons. To make an appointment with Gary, call Blushes Cirencester on 01285 656091

UTUMN OLOUR SCENE NEW AUTUMN COLOUR
MAKE WAY FOR THE HAIR COLOUR OF THE FUTURE...
A
utumn is our most colourful time of the year and the new season’s hair colours reflect this, with gorgeous coppery-coloured leaf tones leading the way. “We are seeing people choose warmer, deeper reds and being braver with orangey copper and chestnut tones,” says Sammi Gordon, senior colourist at Blushes Gloucester. This season’s coppery tones are particularly well covered by the revolutionary Inoa range by L’Oréal. Billed as ‘the hair colour of the future’, Inoa is made with natural ingredients, contains no ammonia, and actually cares for your hair and scalp too. “Because it’s oil-based, Inoa is softer on the hair and more moisturising,” says Sammi. “It leaves hair silky, shiny and soft and by your seventh application, your hair should be back to its pre-coloured, natural condition.” Creamy in texture, Inoa gives hair a real gloss with lasting colour. The range is ideal for covering grey hair, with 100% coverage, and it’s also a great choice if you’re new to colouring, thanks to its natural, conditioning formula.
Issue 1 Autumn/Winter 2011
“I really believe this is the way all other hair colours will go,” says Darrell Blake, co-founder of Blushes. “The gloss is incredible, as is the fade factor. The real benefit is in the summer because the colour just doesn’t fade – it really stays true.” Blushes’ colourists understand that hair colour is unique for every client. “We always give clients a full consultation,” says Sammi, “and use colour capes to work out what skin tone you are. We then go through the colours – and products – that might suit you.” A good colourist will take into account a customer’s personality, wardrobe and even job role to make sure the colour will be a good match for the client’s lifestyle. Whether you want to just enhance your natural tone or go completely ‘conkers’, there’s a colour out there to suit you – why not book a consultation with a senior colourist to discover your new autumn colour?
Look after your colour with the Vitamino Colour (from £9.10) and Pureology (from £14.85) ranges, stocked in all our salons.

THINNING HAIR
ever there was a holy grail to be found in the hairdressing world, it would surely be to find a cure for thinning hair. With 40% of men experiencing noticeable hair loss by the age of 35, and 65% of men by the age of 60, it’s definitely time to declare war on thinning hair! There are up to 50 different reasons for hair loss, so a correct diagnosis by a proper trichologist is key to understanding why you might be susceptible. Mark Blake, co-director of Blushes, is currently studying trichology (or science of the human hair), with the aim of being able to offer in-depth consultations to sufferers in the future. “I look at hair and scalp problems everyday and decided that I would like to know exactly what I was looking at and how I could help people through this very dramatic time of their life,” says Mark. Unfortunately science is not able at the moment to reverse the process, but there are ways you can slow down or disguise your thinning hair. New products containing miracle ingredients have recently flooded the market claiming to strengthen and thicken the hair.
Thinning hair is a concern that affects over two-thirds of men - and increasing numbers of women - at some stage in their lives but thanks to major advances in new technology there are ways you can help combat the problem...
“The male market has grown hugely. Gone are the days when men used random bits of shampoo left over in the shower!”
If you’re concerned about thinning hair, why not come in for a free consultation and try a complimentary sample from the new Kérastase Homme Capital Force or Redken Intra Force ranges

The hair and style magazine from blushes®
“The male market has grown hugely,” says Ben Colabella, assistant manager at Blushes Cheltenham, “and there are some really good products available these days. Gone are the days when men used random bits of gel or shampoo left over in the shower – we now have products that contain lots of technology that are readily available to us, and at good value.” Certainly the list of ingredients in some of the new male products sounds impressive and there’s no denying the amount of research that’s gone into these high-tech treatment systems, but wouldn’t it just be simpler – and cheaper – to get the clippers out and opt for a quick grade 1 at home? “Short hair will definitely add more texture making it look thicker and fuller,” says Ben, “but a shaved head doesn’t suit everyone. It’s better to get a good haircut with a good hairdresser who can look at your face shape and your hair type and then cut your hair to suit you. And if you get your hair cut every 6 weeks it will stay looking neat and full.” So, if you really want to win the war on thinning hair you need to think tactics before going into battle - high-tech ammunition combined with good oldfashioned common sense should just about do it!

Blushes make-up and beauty expert, Laura Cambridge, gives us her insider tips on how to enhance your features with these 5 subtle steps...
Exfoliating Body Scrub
Le Vernis Nail Colour

by Chanel
Prolong your holiday glow with this creamy exfoliator that leaves your skin noticeably smoother, more polished and energised. Full of refreshing essential oils, it also revitalises the body and awakens the senses – a great way to start the day! Available at Blink@Blushes
Where Chanel leads others follow and we’re certain to be hot on the heels of these three new nail colours for autumn. Graphite (a glittery gre y-black), Peridot (a pearled green with gold tint) and Quartz (a pearled brown) offer grown-up glamour in gorgeous autumnal shades. We love!
Big Bounce Eyeshadows by Mac
Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant Tinted by Jan Marini
The trend for natural eyes is big for Autumn and these new eyeshadows from Mac give a beautiful fresh sheen. Just sweep over the socket for a gorgeous wash of colour. We like Sizzlin’ Diva, a rusty copper highlighted with gold pearl, to match this season’s new hair colours.
An A-lister secret, Jan Marini leads the way in anti-ageing skincare. This light, tinted moisturiser is perfect if you don’t like to feel products on your face, but you still want to achieve a flawless, just-got-back-fromholiday look! It also contains SPF30.

Give shape to your face – how you apply blusher can change the shape of your face. If you have a round face, apply it below your cheekbones to give structure, and if you have a small face, blend it on the apples of your cheeks to make your face look fuller Don’t be afraid of colour – it’s easy to get stuck in a make-up rut but colour can really enhance your features. Try shades of purple around your eyes for something new but that’s still subtle Choose matt for older skins – lots of people use frosted colours because they think it makes their skin look brighter, however, the iridescent beads fall into wrinkles and exaggerate them. Matt colours are much more flattering to older skins Frame your face – eyebrows can make a dramatic difference to your face. Choose a soft kohl pencil in the right colour and just give definition to your brows. You’ll really notice the result Eliminate shine – Mac Strobe Cream is a must, especially for photos. It gives the skin illumination while blotting out shine. Just dab it on your eyes and above your cheekbones to create lift

ASK THE EXPERTS
I need blow-dry lessons! Charlotte Jack from Painswick asks:
How can I cease the grease?
I want a new look!
Adam Pearson from Stroud asks:
Ella Skelston from Slad asks:
How can I achieve a salon-look blow-dry at home? Whenever I have my hair cut and styled at Blushes, the salon blow-dry just finishes it off and I leave feeling great - my hair looks really smooth, shiny and bouncy. No matter how hard I try I just don’t seem to be able to achieve the same finish at home. Any tips?
Why does my hair look greasy again the day after I wash it? It feels really good the day I wash it but starts to get really greasy and lank the next day. I’m having to wash my hair every day just to keep it looking nice. Please help!
I’m bored of my hair – I’ve never really changed my hair style or colour since I was at school! After having three children, I’m now ready for a new look. I want to feel more grown-up but with a style that is easy to manage. How do I know what will suit me?
Louise says: “Start by applying L’Oreal Tec Ni Art Root Lift at the roots and Moroccan Oil on the ends of towel-dried hair. To achieve a good blow-dry, you need to work in sections around the head. Starting from the underneath, take a section of hair using a ceramic round brush (the size of brush will depend on your hair length).
Gary says: “One of the most common reasons that your hair can look lank soon after washing is that you’re using the incorrect shampoo for your hair type. It’s always best to speak to your stylist so they can advise you which products you should be using. Always make sure your shampoo and conditioner are thoroughly washed out as any residue can drag hair down.
Cheryl says: “Having a new hairstyle can be a great mood lifter and you don’t need to go to dramatic lengths to update your look. If you feel like a change it’s always best to come and have a free consultation with one of our stylists who will talk through your hair type, face shape and lifestyle with you and find out what you’re trying to achieve.
Washing your hair too much can also lead to oily hair because every time you stimulate your scalp when washing you are increasing the amount of natural oils in your hair. If you are prone to oily hair try washing your hair every other day and use a shampoo targeted for oily scalps.
An easy way to freshen up your hair is to add colour and a low maintenance fix is to try a scattering of high or low lights depending on your skin tone: these will only need re-applying every few months. Richesse is another colour fix that enhances your natural tones and creates a beautiful, glossy look.
Lift the section and dry the hair with the hairdryer on high heat, medium speed. Make sure the hair is being dried from the root to the ends to create a full and smooth finish. Make sure each section is dry before going to the next one. When your hair is fully dried, add a little Tec Ni Art Serum to smooth any stray hairs and finish with a squirt of L’Oréal Infinium hair spray to hold the style.”
Finally, don’t overload on styling products and only use product at the ends of your hair, not in the roots.”

Depending on your hair length, you could try adding a fringe – this can give you a completely different look without changing your style dramatically.”

MEET THE STYLIST
MEET THE
We enjoy some blow-dry banter with Blushes’ new style director Laurent Bressolles
stylist Q: You are from France originally – what brought you to Blushes? A: It was a family decision – I have a little boy who is 18 months old so we wanted to move out of the city. We came to Cheltenham for the weekend and really liked it. When I was talking to people about where I should work in this area, Blushes came up a number of times. I think it’s the best salon in Gloucestershire and is really successful, so that was that!
Where were you working before? Before I joined Blushes in November 2010 I was working in Wimbledon in London. Before that I worked in Aix-en-Provence in France and also in Melbourne, Australia. I’ve had training all over the world! I think hairdressing is more exciting in England – people are more adventurous with their hair and the way they dress, especially in London.
How did you get into hairdressing? My uncle, Guy, is a hairdresser with his own salon in the south of France, in Toulouse. He’s a nice guy, and he was my inspiration. He started to teach me when I was 16.
What do you like about being a hairdresser? There are not many jobs where it’s so intimate. I love to make people feel happier about themselves and a good haircut can do that. 22
What is your speciality?
Which famous hair do you admire?
I would say I am naturally more into cutting. I used to do colour as well in France but in England you usually specialise in one or the other. Generally hairdressers don’t spend enough time cutting hair. We are lucky at Blushes because we give clients 45 minutes which is a lot more than some salons, but ideally we’d have at least an hour!
The French actress Catherine Deneuve always has good hair and I love the Italian actress Monica Bellucci’s hair – she has a lovely, sharp fringe and her hair is always shiny and glossy.
What request makes your day? It’s weird, but hairdressing is never boring. When you get to know your client, it’s nice to push things a bit, to sometimes try new things. For example I may suggest you keep your hair long this time or try a little fringe – it keeps it exciting. A total makeover is nice to do but not on your first time – you need to know your clients well so you can try new things together.
How are you enjoying our weather? It’s terrible! The lifestyle is so different here because it is all indoors. If the weather was amazing here it would be fantastic. I always say that if London had a beach and amazing weather it would be the best city in Europe!
And our food...? I’m much slimmer here than if I was in France! You eat differently here. The quality is good but in France we eat much richer foods like cheese and lots of meat. We are lucky that we live in Cirencester where there are some really nice restaurants.
Do you prefer to chat or cut in silence? Finally, what’s the one hair product I would say a little bit of both is nice. I am not we shouldn’t be without? naturally a talker but it is nice finding out a bit more about your clients each time. Darrell (Blushes co-owner) told me that the Blushes thing is about having a good client relationship as well as being a good hairdresser so it is important to get to know your clients. My English language has definitely improved since being here!
