ABOUT THE REPORT This report provides an in-depth analysis of the worldwide market for smart glass used in cars and trucks identifying the main opportunities that smart glass presents for glass and coatings makers as well as for the car firms themselves. In addition, the report includes an eight-year (volume and value) forecast of smart auto glass with breakouts by materials technology and functionality. The report incorporates a technology assessment of the latest smart glass technologies for the automotive sector including self-tinting glass, self-cleaning glass, self-healing glass, and automotive display glass. Applications covered are windshields, mirrors, sunroofs, other automotive windows and dashboards. The report also discusses the glass-related opportunities that NanoMarkets sees emerging as the result of the latest trends in automotive infotainment systems.

This report pinpoints the main trends that will shape the revenue potential of smart auto glass in the next decade. Noting that many of the smart glass technologies used in cars and trucks have low performance and short lifetimes, this report analyzes how performance will be improved and how this can lead to enhanced revenue streams for the firms involved with smart auto glass, both as technology providers and as OEMs.

SMART AUTO GLASS: MEANING

Electronics-embedded glass:Antennas and heaters have been embedded in-or laminated on-glass for decades, but now, we can also see potential market for other kinds of embedded glass .

Smart privacy glass:-

Smart mirrors:-

Here, it refers to PDLC glass, which is just another type of self-dimming glass. There is not much clarity about use of this product for general window applications.

A mature market for smart auto glass. Gentex has been selling smart mirrors for decades and the business still continues.

Self-cleaning glass:Various coatings are available but wiper less windshield still far from reality.

www.nanomarkets.net

S Self-dimming windows:For this, SPD technology seems to score better over electrochromic, photochromic and thermochromic

Self-healing glass:Are possible with coating capable of removing cracks from glass and mirrors but, more advanced products in this category are not yet available

Safety

Comfort

Design/style

Cleaner windshields make for safer driving. But at present these coatings are not ready for auto applications

Clear view enhances the driving experience for both the driver and passengers

Even though they are primarily introduced for their functionalities, they do add onto the style features of a vehicle

It might make auto glass more protected from scratches and cracks, but conventional auto glass do possess such features to some extent

Fuel Economy Not much clarity on impact on fuel economy

Even though they are primarily introduced for their functionalities, they do add onto the style features of a vehicle

Well deployed for auto mirrors and could add more controls to tinted windows

Glare and bright sunlight can be controlled, making it more comfortable for drivers and passengers

These features add onto coolness of vehicles

Self-dimming glass can enhance the capability of keeping inside of vehicles cool

Touch screen and HUDs may be the safest way to interact with complex dash display-or not

Touch screen and entertainment features may make some contribution to comfort

Dashboard being the key focus of design in cars, embedded sensors and other devices may help in this regard

May have some impact in the area of environmental control systems

Opportunities

Photochromic

Thermochromic

PDLC

SPD

Dominant smart windows materials platform

Niche

Niche with limited dimming capabilities

Limited to privacy glass only

Niche products mainly used in autos

Polymers and transition metal oxides

Photochromic film Hybrid materials Catalytic platforms

Enormous potential, Vanadium dioxide is often referenced

Liquid crystals of various kinds

Polydiode and similar materials

More materials in this class that can be commercialized

New sales territories and more hybrid solutions

New materials platforms have considerable opportunities

Better power consumption, PDLC/EC, reverse PDLC, hybrids etc

Limited by RFI franchise, but better materials are being sought out

Low power consumption, good switching times

Unclear – maybe price

Low price and ease of integration into IGUS

Switching time and level of light blocking for large panels

Better manufacturing options, lower prices

Opportunity for innovations

Competition for conventional retrofit window film

Not much clarity on its ability to breakout from this niche as PDLC is just a form of privacy glass

Could be more widely used perhaps in a version using new materials. RFI seems open to new products

OTHER TYPES OF AUTOMOTIVE SMART GLASS

PDLC Privacy Glass:Just another kind of self-tinted technology, but as it never gets all that clear, not suitable for standard windows applications. More suitable for buildings but still finds its application as privacy glass in cars too. Most likely to be used in limousines and taxies.

Self-Cleaning Glass:There is a big safety-driven potential market for smart glass in automotive sector. There are limited simple coatings available which can enable self-cleaning properties in glass. Mostly used by small suppliers but again they are not really effective or long lasting.

www.nanomarkets.net

Smart Mirrors:Also called a self-tinted mirror, seems to be a mature part of smart auto glass market. But we see limited opportunities ahead, as this market is dominated by one company, Gentex. Some limited opportunities exists where these mirrors can be integrated with additional embedded functionality of some kind.

Self-Healing Glass:Very much similar to self-cleaning glass in regards to its development, but has huge market potential. From technical perspective they are much more difficult to create. However there are plenty of reasons, aesthetics and safety to name a few, for selfhealing glass to gain recognition.

EMBEDDED INTELLIGENCE IN SMART AUTO GLASS Heads-up displays:- Have been used in cars for many years

1

in the form of systems to project images onto the windshield. However more sophisticated Heads-up displays likely to emerge, where windshield may become a transparent display.

Other Displays:-Gentex already offers a mirror with a video

display that can be used for information delivery, alerts and notifications and owner’s manual information. This can be a model for the future of car displays.

Lighting:-Map lights or soft cabin lights can be embedded in glass. Functionality of windows and lighting could be merged together.

Solar panels as windows:-Solar panels can be integrated in windows that could run heating and lighting in cars.

Touch and gesture controls:-Touch controls are already present in cars, we expect to see more on touch controls followed by gesture control. There are big glass related opportunities but not in the immediate future.
