Hello and welcome to the March edition of the Northern Regions Newsletter. The region has recently sent out a survey to members to find out what further training we can offer in each specific area of the region. If you have not yet completed the survey please do. You can find it on the regional webpage on the British Dressage website. Viewing day’s are now up and running for all riders who are aiming to be selected for regional teams at this year’s Inter Regional’s and Home Internationals. We require up to 100 riders for these competitions, from Prelim to PSG, Over 18’s, BYRDS
(Under 25’s) and Para riders. It is a great opportunity to meet like minded riders from the Northern region and other regions. We are very busy with regional camps, training clinics, lecture demonstrations and DVD evenings and as always do keep looking at the regional diary on the BD website as new events are added on a weekly basis. The training is open to all and we carefully select all the trainers. The National Winter Championships are fast approaching and we wish all those who are competing the very best of luck.

Everyone told us what a friendly group it is and that’s exactly how we found it to be. A big thank you to yourself and everyone else that made it a lovely weekend.”

For each chosen movement, several clips of different riders will be shown. eg Centre line and halt, 10m circle, leg yield, half pass etc. This will give the audience the opportunity to compare the execution of the movements and encourage open discussion, to arrive at a mark. ‘The View from C’ Sue Carson explains how to improve your dressage scores Knowing what the judge is looking for when you ride down the centre line at the start of a dressage test is the key to a good score, as presenting your correctly trained horse well can improve a mediocre mark to a good one and maybe even a WOW one! For the dressage judge, ‘The View from C’ allows five minutes to assess the horse, his athleticism, stage of training and willingness to work with the rider in performing the requirements of the test being ridden. Just what the judge is looking for and how the marks are awarded is the subject of two evening demonstrations presented by Sue Carson, List 2a judge and trainer. The first is at Barleyfields EC on Saturday April 14th and the second at Catterick Garrison Saddle Club on Saturday, April 28th. Sue will work with riders and their horses or ponies from preliminary to elementary level, explaining clearly what the judge is looking for in the different movements from a number of tests. By judging ‘out loud’ and then discussing the marks for the individual movements and the collectives, along with her comments and the reasons for them, she will give a clear insight into what often goes wrong and how you can improve your scores. These interactive evenings, presented in conjunction with British Dressage Northern Region, will be of particular interest to riders thinking of moving up to affiliated competition this year, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Take part In addition, there is a fabulous opportunity to take part in the evenings as one of the guinea pig riders and it could be you! If you and your horse would like to benefit from a one-to-one session with Sue, visit the Sue Carson Saddles website at www.suecarsonsaddles.co.uk and complete the simple online contact form saying what you would like to work on and what your competitive goals are this season. Shortlisted riders will be contacted for more information. To find out more and book tickets, go to the regional webpage – diary section: www.britishdressage.co.uk/your_ regions/northern_region.

Giorgio’s Diary
FEB 2012
Hi, My name is Giorgio Catleugh, I am 7 years old and I ride a pony called Oliver. Oliver is my best friend and last year we joined British Dressage with my South Durham Pony Club membership. My first test was Walk-Trot A at Richmond Equestrian Centre and when I learned how to get the right canter lead I progressed onto Prelim tests. I have been competing in Prelim 12 and Prelim 14 tests and I have had nice comments from the judges. My best test was in Prelim 12 at Richmond Equestrian Centre when I scored just over 61% and was placed 4th in the class. I have qualified for round two in trailblazers and I’m working towards a +62% score at Prelim level with BD. I compete and support my friends who I sometimes train with but the only problem is everyone in my classes are adults and all girls so my trainer said I should give BYRDS a try. “What is BYRDS I asked?” and she replied “BYRDS stands for British Young Dressage Riders Scheme. It is a training and competition group for young people. You get the chance to train with Britain’s best dressage teachers, you get to ride with and make friends with people your age and yes there will be boys like you there too!” I wanted to try something different so my parents filled in the BYRDS registration forms and booked me onto a lesson with Cathy Burrell at Jodhpurs Equestrian Centre near York. The BYRDS training session was hard work but I really enjoyed it and Cathy was a good teacher. She taught me how to have a conversation down the reins to keep Oliver on the bit. After a few pony club rallies and Christmas jumping competitions I was ready to start this year by going to more BYRDS training. Please feel free to read my diary and follow my progress with British Dressage and BYRDS:17th-19th February BYRDS CAMP: I went to BYRDS camp because I wanted to meet people my age and have fun in the lessons, test practice and games! One day I want to be part of the team and to take part in the big competition for the team I have to do three training days. The camp counts as two days and I did some training last year with Cathy Burrell which makes three. In day 1 I rode with Amelia Moncrieff who is a lovely rider and our teacher Hannah Moody did a really hard corner work exercise to stop us leaning in on the corners. She also took our stirrups away and made us do rising trot and sitting trot which was great fun. In the afternoon I had to ride my Fledgling test which I was really pleased with because Oliver went round very well for me. Then we had a stable management competition where we (Myself, Rebecca Hafizullah, and Carrie Marshall) had to put bandages on Oliver, tie a stock and put plats in. We were all giggling because Oliver loved the attention but the plaiting and the stock tying were really hard. On the night I got to stay in a hotel which had a swimming pool in! During day 2 Hannah did more difficult exercises with us like leg-yielding and standing in our stirrups. Then we took our score sheets up for our video feedback from our Fledgling tests. I was really pleased with my marks because I scored 7’s and the judge said I presented the test well. I have lots to work on though and now I want to work towards scoring 8’s for my riding. The next BYRDS camp and competition is on the 7th May when I will be eight years old. I really want to train hard now so that I can improve for the competition and have more fun at the next camp.
