HIDING IN THE FOREST Architecture originates from nature. Each brick, each wall, each wood, they are all taken from the nature. Facing the nature, we shouldn't wantonly destroy and replace it to steal the show, but should be quiet and respect.

The greening rate of the site is 100%, and there are many arbors forming a large area of shadow which can be used for rest. Saving as much green spaces as possible for students is one of my biggest concerns.

Trasportation

The site is located in the intersection of two main roads of the campus, and with a campus greenway on it's west side. Therefore the site is responsible to organize the campus traffic here.

Site Location Situated in the campus of Shenzhen University,Nanshan,Shenzhen,China, the site area is about 5597 sq.m, shaped as a triangle. On it’s east side, there is a slope from the north to the south, with an 4m height difference.

Activites

Because the site adjoins with the student center, and by considering the functional complementation, it is necessary to make up a connection for them.

A wood structure bases on the ground floor’s building, and a platform is builded upon the wood structure to hold the outdoor activities or as a sightseeing point.

There is a abandoned underground shelter, about 115sq.m, in the site. It inspires me to design the underground spaces, and to make it becomes an entrance hall will be very interesting.

The altitude of the ground floor is the same as the altitude of the bottom of the slope on the east side of the site. The ground floor contains a theater, a backstage area,a exhibition room and a reading room, also it is responsable for the internal flow line organization.

Performance Area

A play can be separates as two parts: the performance part and the management part. The performance part starts from the actors arrival to makeup then to the practice, finally to the stage. And the management part starts from unloading the stage properties to storing them, then to supporting the show. The arrangement of spaces is to fit with both parts in order to make people easier to work. Because there are a lot of student organizations in the campus, an outdoor platform which can be used for the band show, street dance or meeting is therefore really necessary.

Stage&Auditorium

The 12m height stage can be used for the play and the modern drama. The auditorium can accommodate 524 people, and it has 3 longitudinal paths and 3 transverse paths to ensure the evacuation in emergency.

It is a kind of wood tenon structure with six wood sticks that each one has a different shape. Assembling them in a particular order, the wood sticks can form a firm structure and it can be used as a basic element to build the bigger structure.

90 degree

Corridor

The student center provides students a place to compose and rehearse, and the art center provides students a stage to display their works. Thus the corridor completes the process of a show. Forming a kind of vague contact between the audience and the actor before the performance, the corridor can largely increase the curiosity of audiences about the show.

06

Reinforcement

When the horizontal sticks are considered as girders to support the building, it is necessary to enhance their strength by increasing the thickness.

The city-vilage is a specific problem in Shenzhen, because this city develops so sudden and fast that many original villages can’t follow the speed, therefore become the places with comparable worse living condition and lower rental. However these advantages attract a lot of immigrants to choose the city-village as the first station in the city.

Shenzhen Baoan center

Located between the Nanshan district and the Futian distirct, the site is passed through by the most important city road. In it’s south, the city’s new financial center will be built in the next few years. So it is significent to plan the site by standing on a bigger prespective to set the goals fitting the needs of the city’s development.

In the same situation with the second one, more and more villagers joined the illegal buliding action looking for more rental, which had become the main income for the villager.

Coexist community

According to our research, some advantages of Baisizhou, such as the spacial formation, active community, and the location, can be used to achieve the goal of overall development. To allocate the benefits of city renewal reasonably to each participants is one of our concerns, which is helpful to build the ‘coexist community’, carrying more activities and meeting various needs of the modern live. There are four main types of participant which are included in the Baishizhou renewal project, and each of them has a different appeal, thus the goal is trying to organize these appeals to reach a balance. Four original elements of Baishizhou are preserved as a basis to create two axes linking two parts of the site. Optimized road network could better serve the community and urban traffic. The landmasses are separated by the road network and the axes. Further more, two outside landmasses between the north part and the south part, are considered to help the site forming a continuity community.

These three elements, the old houses, an old street and a structure, are both memorable and interesting, they could be used to represent the old Baishizhou. By preserving their spacial formation, texture and others advantages, they are able to bring the original feeling to the visitors. Given the new functions, they are able to meet the needs of modern live. As the LOFT, hostorical museum and community center, they could again play the significant roles in the community.

New Building Benefit Balance Concerning, Tree Main Target: Developers, Original Villagers, Low Income Immigrants In order to reach the beneficial balance between this three participants, we try to deal with it by different functional spaces. For developers, they can use the mall, the office buildings and the commercial apartments to get the profits. For immigrants, the low rental apartments can offer them an affordable house at the beginning. For local villagers, the vertical villages can not only provide them with comfortable houses, but also the rental of these houses can be the income.

Because our site currently lacks basic greening, the suitable greening space is one of the most significant parts of our planning. Instead of the traditional greening pieces, if a greening axis cuts from north to south through our long shape site connecting all the dots and making them one, that will be a nice place for the residents. Therefore we decide to stretch it out along the site itself, to create a linear continual greening pedestrian park to enlarge the range of its service. Along the axis there are a primary school, a kindergarten, and the sports facilities which can also open to public on weekends.

Village Street We preserve this commercial street out of our approval of its scale and commercial ambience. This street , with its suitable scale, could be a typical representative of streetwise culture which is the specialty of urban villages, therefore suitable for renovations, and by upgrading from current residential functions to distinctive guesthouses, it can have a higher commercial value.

The power of human development comes from the respect and study of nature. People who live in the city for a long time will gradually forget this relationship, which will cause they lost and lose their power. Rethinking this relationship is important, and which will bring inspiration to our life.

17

Location

The location of the site is inside the 2015 Milan expo park, Milan,Italy. Situated in the nearly suburbs, the site is between the vast farming fields and the downtown area, which gives it a special meaning.

Italy

Comparson of Chinese and Italian Garden

City&Nature

City, people live and work. Nature, people survive and thrive. City and nature seems like opposite, but actually them relate closely. People live in city never forget the nature, whether eastern or western, ancient or modern. We always try to bring the nature into city, and mostly it appears as the form of gardens. In my opinion, they are not just to prettify the environment, however, they are a way to connect the people’s mind to the nature to build the communication which helps us to rethink ourselves, to rethink the relationship between human and nature to seek the better way of human development.

Depth of field

By increasing the length of the field, Chinese garden reveals the vastness of the nature. Also, the garden can therefore be shaped by different levels of landscape, which lays the foundation for the richness of space.

Milan

Expo Theme

Expo Park

Agriculture is the basic cooperation of human and nature. 2015 Milan expo makes the agriculture as the theme, bring us to pay attention to nature again. I wish using this chance to build a pavilion maintaining people’s attention on rethinking of the nature.

Concealment

Concealing the scenery is a method by various windows, walls and doors, to increase the mystery of the garden. Visitor has to stand on a particular position to see the scenery, and standing on other positions, they can only see a part of the scenery. We call it partly hidden and partly visible( 若隐若现).

Sinuous Pathway

The core of the sinuous pathway is changing the scenery by moving your step(移步异景). By setting the barriers and the rooms, it could largely enrich the route and thus increase the interesting of the garden.

Italian gardens have a common characteristic which is there are always some buildings surrounding the garden or some platforms above or beneath them. It is a good way to directly build communication between the people in both places.

Facade

According to the chinese tranditional aesthetic value judgement, transluctency is the best way to contact with other objects. We use the phrase 若隐若现(partly hidden and partly visible) to describe this mysterious feeling. I hope to reappear this sense in the pavillion to build the mysterious feeling on both sides of the wall. Two materials have been raised, the bamboo sheet, and the transparent concrete wall, which reduce the direct eye contact, while the rest of the sight increases the curiosity of visiters.

Bamboo Sheet

Transparent Concrete

The bamboo is well known by it’s durable, low price, flexible and sustainable. It can be easily replaced when it is broken. And somewhat the bamboo can cool down the building in the summer.

The transparent concrete is a fantastic material for the pavillion. It is not only helpful to light the building, but also it is a media to build the interesting communication on both sides.

Flow line

The pavillion is divided into two main parts, one for the public and the other one for the researcher and manager, therefore it naturally has two flow lines. The public flow line leads visiters to completely experience the garden. The interior flow line helps the reseacher and manager to organize their daily works.

Background research The book’s history in China can be chased back to the very ancient time, the North-song dynasty, and the building activities were one of the most significant events in that periods. So we want to figure out why the book of building standard ‘Yingzao fashi’ advented in the North-Song dynasty. And what kind of social environment and factors caused it to appear.

Invention of Typography

Typography (970~1051)

Paper money “交子”(1023)

The invention of Typography has a great influence on the book’s production and communication. It accelerates the speed of book producing, therefore more books are available to be used in many spheres, which causes a big development of the society. For example, in building process, having a physical building standard like a book can largely save the budget and increase the efficiency, which leads to numorous building activities.

Invention of the paper money greatly stimulates the development of economy, that more markets lead to more consumptions, and many people getting rich. The first thing chinese people tend to do when they have money is to build houses, thus people urgently need a standard to guide the building activities. So it is also a factor casing the advent of ‘Yingzao fashi’.
