Since a young age I believed I had my life all figured out. I was going to be a professional football player. However, when it came time to decide between going to school for urban planning or for athletics, my mind was already made up. See I figured maybe I would have an impact athletically short-term, but I wanted something more. I wanted something I could continue to grow in, something that is constantly changing, evolving, reinventing itself . Thus here I am today as an urban planning student at the University of Cincinnati, determined to make lasting impacts through my work. Growing up within three miles of downtown Pittsburgh, I spent significant amounts of time around the city. What intrigues me the most about cities is the fact that they are comprised of an organized mess of systems and networks. Countless moving parts, variables, and challenges unique to each respected city or region. Add the human element to it all and that is where the “fun begins. The nonstop communication separates planning from other related fields. A field that takes someone with passion, determination, creativity, and above all, patience. This is me, and this my work.

Project: Area Development Plan Workshop Facilitation Year: 2017 Company/Firm: Michael Baker International Composition Type: Hand-Drawing Purpose:

Contracted through Installation Management Command (IMCOM), Michael Baker International currently works with the Army to assist in Master Planning efforts on Installations around the world. One effort conducted is an Area Development Plan. Here, the Installation is broken into managable pieces, and real property projects are discussed in more detail. Week-long workshops/charrettes are conducted with the stakeholders to allow those who live and work on the Installation to provide their input in developing the District Plan. Pictured here is the Preferred Alternative for an Installation. Labeled are real property projects that become the framework for future planning, design, and construction efforts.

Pictured on this spread are a few examples of products that are made following the workshops. The graphics shown are pieces to the overall Area Development Plan Report that is sent back to the military Installation. Shown on this page are street sections and renderings designed to show proposed conditions for specific Installations. The goal is to move each Installation more toward the “complete steets design. Doing so promotes increased walkability, safety, sustainability, and multi-modal transportation.

Project: Central Business District Design Guidelines Year: 2015-2016 Company/Firm: Town Center Associates Composition Type: Photography, InDesign, Illustrator Purpose:

Town Center Associates works with over twenty communities in Western Pennsylvania to revitalize traditional downtown-based main street communities. The Central Business District Design Guidelines “smart” document was developed to give business owners, community members, and investors design inspiration. While every community is different, the guidelines provide a wide-range of ideas and best-practices for all to realize quality does not always equal large investment. Sometimes the smallest things done the “right” way can make huge differences for an entire community. Project: 3D Model of Ohio University Main Campus Year: 2015 Company/Firm: Ohio University Planning and Space Management and Ayer Saint Gross

Composition Type: SketchUp Purpose:

Ohio University developed a Comprehensive Master Plan for their main campus in Athens, Ohio. Ayer Saint Gross was selected as the consultant for the plan. One aspect they believed would be beneficial throughout the process was to create a 3D model of campus, and use it for various maps, renderings, and other studies within the plan. I happily took on the job of developing a model for them, referencing architectural drawings and GIS data to develop an accurate representation of campus. The model is a working model, continuously having detail added to it as the process moves forward, and as focus areas become more apparent. Using my model in collaboration with their rendering techniques and softwares, the model really begins to come to life.

Project: Summer 2015 Construction Projects Year: 2014 Company/Firm: Ohio University Planning and Space Management Composition Type: ArcMap, Excel, Powerpoint Purpose: The University Board of Trustees were looking to take their Excel spreadsheet of Summer Construction Projects into something more

visual for both them and the general public. The result would also have to show all the projects were occurring at various times. The finished product became a map/spreadsheet hybrid, allowing for a large amount of data and information to be presented in a visual and attractive manner.

Project: Shafer Street Proposed Site Plan Year: 2014 Company/Firm: Ohio University Planning and Space Management Composition Type: Hand-drawing Purpose:

An Existing soccer field on campus was looked at as a possible site for future university development. OU’s medical college was looking for additional space on campus, and wanted to see some potential site designs. The four options to the right show the flexibility the space could offer, including a possible single large building with the soccer field placed on the roof of the two-story building. Designs kept in mind surrounding built environment, exisiting conditions, traffic flow, parking needs, college’s space needs, and landscape aesthetics.

Project: Master Plan for Baltimore St. (Cumberland, MD) Year: 2013 Company/Firm: Mackin Engineering Composition Type: SketchUp Purpose:

A large aspect of Baltimore Street’s Master Plan was to revitalize the corridor. The street is on the National Register of Historic Places, and was once a thriving business center for the City of Cumberland. The city turned the street into a pedestrian mall, but unfortunately saw investment and vibrancy decline throughout the corridor. To the right is the existing state of a central location in the mall. The proposed design calls for an elevated stage and entertainment area, along with inviting seating to get people to stay and enjoy their surroundings.

Project: Capstone Project - Building Healthy and Resilient Places Year: 2016 Company/Firm: University of Cincinnati Composition Type: Hand-drawing, Adobe Suite, SketchUp Purpose:

For our capstone project, each student chose one of four neighborhoods to redesign a currently vacant or underutilized area of that community. The overarching theme of the project was to create healthy and resilient places. The area I chose was College Hill (Cincinnati, OH). The idea was to create a mixed-use development that tied directly into the exising main street that serves as the backbone to the community. Through enhanced walkability, improved access to healthy food choices, and opportunities for recreation, the design promotes health for the mind and body of those in the community.

Project: Pleasant Street Corridor, Fourth-Year Studio Year: 2015 Company/Firm: University of Cincinnati Composition Type: Hand-Drawing, Illustrator, Photoshop, SketchUp, GIS Purpose:

The goal of the studio was to transform the Pleasant Street corridor of the Over the Rhine neighborhood in Cincinanti to better adhere to the needs of pedestrians. Extensive research was done on the existing conditions pertaining to things such as land use, ownership, safety, demographics, existing housing stock, perception of the area, residents needs, and connectivity between Findlay Market and Washington Park. Working in groups of three-four students, designs and proposals also kept in mind potential economic impacts, along with the various other forms of transportation.

Project: Final Project, Third Year Studio-Spring Semester Year: 2014 Company/Firm: University of Cincinnati Composition Type: SketchUp Purpose:

The overall focus for our third-year studio was on the East End neighborhood of Cincinnati, OH. Having a significant portion of the neighborhood being located within or near the floodplain, stormwater and flood mitigation were key components to our designs. Other important aspects were the historical characteristics of the area, economic development, and ways to attract more people to venture toward this area of the city. The overall design shown here was inspired by the nearby historic clock factory, along with the internal parts found in traditional clocks.

Project: Final Project, Second Year Studio-Fall Semester Year: 2012 Company/Firm: University of Cincinnati Composition Type: Physical Model Purpose:

Our final project in our sophomore studio required us to create a physical, scaled model of a 150 acre subdivision. Working with Greg Sanders and Anna Barchick-Suter, our group throughout the semester analyzed and developed a mixed-use subdivision using Mount Airy Forest (Cincinnati) as our given site. With steep eneven terrain throughout the forest, the goal of the studio was to learn how to design with the land in terms of drainage, infrastructure, and placement of buildings. Materials used included: cardboard, modeling trees, wood, thread, and markers.

Project: Final Project, First Year Studio-Spring Semester Year: 2012 Company/Firm: University of Cincinnati Composition Type: SketchUp Purpose:

The rendering shown depicts a proposed park to be placed in the Pleasant Ridge (Cincinnati, OH) business district. The small space is currently being used as a parking lot. The goal was to solve a problem that seemed apparent in a given business district in the Cincinnati area. The goals for the proposed park were to encourage more foot traffic in the area, as well as increase community engagement.

Project: Final Project, First Year Studio-Fall Semester Year: 2011 Company/Firm: University of Cincinnati Composition Type: Hand-Drawing Purpose:

The first studio I had at the University of Cincinnati developed handdrawing skills. Despite all of the computer programs and technology in the world, hand-drawing continues to be an impactful tool to have in the planning profession. Displayed here are a few of the drawing projects done during the studio.
