The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends
We are THE Wayfinding and Wayshowing benchmark... From small office buildings to complex hospitals, universities, and real estate developments, SN&F utilizes environmental graphics to reduce visual communication to their essential components and apply current technology and contemporary design in developing Signage and Wayfinding/Wayshowing solutions within the built environment.
WHO WE ARE/What We Do
The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends is the end product of the successful merging of two exacting disciplines: Architecture and Graphic Design. From small office buildings to complex hospitals, universities, libraries and real estate developments, we reduce visual communication problems to their essential components and apply current technology and contemporary design in developing visual communication systems through an architectural medium. It requires experience in the two-dimensional field of graphic design, advertising and design communication arts together with an understanding of three-dimensional architecture to develop environmental signage wayfinding systems that will stand the test of time (both aesthetically and physically). We approach each signage program as a problem unique unto itself. The resulting solutions reflect input from all parties: Client, Architect, Graphic Designer and User. The result being a wayfinding program which solves the user’s visual communication problems. Our services can vary from project to project, however, in each case our primary responsibility is to give the end user a signage system that “works. From the preparation of programming through design, construction documents, bidding and fabrication/installation supervision, the client determines which services are needed to allow for completion of their project within available budgets and time. Rather than delegating the work and project responsibilities to the staff, Mr. Neumann believes that it is his responsibility to oversee and participate on all aspects of the project. He will be the primary client contact, furthermore, he will make a personal commitment that the solution and implementation will be a success.
We are a team of graphic and architectural signage designers. We are not in the practice of architecture, but are in the practice of solving visual communication problems within architecture.
OUR FOUNDER/Principal Designer B. Steve Neumann is the president and founder of The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends, Houston, Texas, a national practice recognized as one of the country’s premier environmental signage/wayfinding firms specializing in health and institutional signage programs. Educated in Communication Design and Photographic Illustration at the Rochester Institute of Technology, his professional experience previous to the formation of Steve Neumann & Friends in 1974, was as Senior Design Director for the Kelvin Group, Inc., one of Houston’s leading pure design studios. Since commencing business, Mr. Neumann has participated in major corporate trademark and identification programs and the development of health, institutional and commercial signage programs acting as primary system programmer, principal designer, management coordinator, technical fabrication and installation consultant. His primary expertise is the development and management of large scale hospital and (corporate) institutional signage programs, designing systems which meet client budget, design and time constraints. Due to the unusually large scope perimeters involved in current commissions, his office has been instrumental in the development of industry benchmarks for construction documentation and implementation manuals utilizing extensive CADD and desktop publishing. As a founding professional member of the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD), he has participated extensively in the organizations’ ADA development round tables (regional seminars) as well as a featured speaker at their annual national meetings (1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1999 and 2000). He served a 9 year term on the SEGD National Board and was highly active in the coordination and planning of the 2001 SEGD National Convention held in Miami Beach, Florida and the development of their education initiative and web-site development. Additionally recognized as a professional industry spokesman, he has been a featured lecturer at the “Sign Users Conference”, (Signs of the Times/Identity Magazine annual conference) in 1991, 1992. He is a sustaining member of the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA), and the Art Director’s Club of Houston (ADCH), and has participated on the Executive Committee of Billboards Limited, a Houston lobby group for the control of visual communication pollution in our environment.
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO/ Our Clients Tell Us What They Like For the past 25-30 years, as our Clients’ have experienced adverse past relationships with other consultants, we have listened carefully to their needs and expectations on what they now expect of a signage program. Driven by the need for absolute Patient Satisfaction, we have remained outspoken at all times using our expanded wayfinding/wayshowing knowledge for signage solutions by a unique process called “What would Aunt Betty do?” Reflecting the everyday experiences one might observe in the common behavior of those under stress, “Betty” establishes the needs and expectations required of all patients and visitors to healthcare and institutional facilities, allowing for absolute User satisfaction within the wayshowing program. “We all have a family member who drives an old Volvo, tries to find everything themselves before asking for directions, while wearing thick glasses in an attempt to read sign copy that was originally too small to read at the distance required. They are fiercely independent as for asking a question of a stranger is a personal embarrassment, but they will walk around in circles until they ultimately find their destination...after passing it multiple times.” Note, that we are not talking “finding” our way through a facility. In a proactive mode, we are “showing” your guests how to discover their destination with signage that is legible, readable, properly placed and if necessary, repetitive. All to assure them of their travels thru the built environment, and then back to where they began! Design is but 10% of our efforts. We also need to do the following: Inventory existing signage assets to determine content. Interview Taskforce Members to gain insight to operational issues. l Observe daily/weekly activities in Lobbies, Patient areas, Garages. Share our observations with the Administration. l Write Legend Schedules reflective of what is NEEDED from the Public Point of View, while also addressing staff needs. l Meet all Departmental Managers/Administrators to receive their input regarding the schemantics and placement of all signs. Then, AFTER all signs have been addressed with participation and approval of all proponents, THEN design the overall sign program so that legends FIT graphic layouts, remaining consistent. l Create a detailed DESIGN MANUAL to permit Vendor participation BOTH during design and bidding/contract award. l Supervise all aspects of the fabrication (shop visits, prototype submittals, shop drawings, certifications prior to shipment) while being available during installation, resolving questions. l Ultimately, accept proudly, the the final product for the Owner! l l

Baptist Health South Florida, Baptist Hospital, Miami, Florida
As the flagship of the Baptist Health System, Baptist Health South Florida had retained multiple consultants, sign companies and architectural firms to address Patient Satisfaction concerns that were degrading the overall Patient Experience. SN&F was retained to deal with Dade County permitting issues, upgrading the patient experience conditions upon arriving and driving thru the overall sprawling campus, and while addressing initial first impressions and public confidence prior to exposure of the second ranked Hospital in Florida. Our primary objective was to establish a consistent brand image, while presenting content that could be comprehend quickly and decisively. The program is undergoing Owner testing and legend content resolution prior to contract award for fabrication and a major County Signage Variance for a program on one of the largest Healthcare permits awarded.

Complete signage development for a comprehensive interior and exterior signage program for the largest not-for-profit hospital in the United States. The signage program was retrofitted into the existing seven major buildings and off-site outpatient facilities. This program allowed complete in-house maintenance of system without continued design assistance. Implementation was driven by the signage needs for a major Hospital addition (Dunn Tower and a new “front door/main lobby) , as well as poor existing signage within the balance of the facility. Undertaken as one massive implementation, SN&F coordinated and supervised the implementation efforts of both the Hospital’s in-house staff and the Graphics Contractor fabrication efforts.
The Methodist Hospital System, Houston, Texas
The Methodist Hospital System, Houston, Texas
Complete signage/wayfinding development for a comprehensive campus wide interior and exterior signage program, within the second largest not-for-profit hospital in the United States. While the initial design concepts were developed under the direction of other graphic firms, The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends was given the unique, primary responsibility to successfully adapt both an exterior campus wide signage program for 35 + buildings (Clinics, Hospitals, Research Facilities and Parking Ramps) in and around Rochester, MN, as well as develop, implement and supervise
construction/fabrication of a main circulation wayfinding program within the downtown campus (Rochester Methodist Hospital and the Gonda Building/Mayo Clinic) and at Saint Marys Hospital. For both programs, SN&F was responsible for the complete product development for all phases of signage implementation, legend schedule preparation, fabrication packages, construction administration and vendor coordination.

Marshfield Clinic, Main Campus and Regional Facilities (92)
With 92 facilities within the northwest corner of Wisconsin, the Marshfield Clinic (Marshfield, WI) revised its corporate branding and image with the development of a unique identity program created by SN&F. The unique adaptation of the corporate “cross and cattails, presented in the form of an acrylic flute atop curved faced modular graphic panels, illustrates a design solution which sets the clinic apart. At night, or on dark, winter days, the custom LED illuminated acrylic flute stands out as a unique homing image. The use of very high quality fabrication, paint application, and LED illumination reflects the desire to have a signage program which meets the longevity criteria established by their in-house wayfinding taskforce.

Frost National Bank, San Antonio, Texas
SN&F was asked to review the overall corporate branding for this traditional San Antonio based banking system. The Frost Bank “sunburst” has been a statewide icon for many years, yet it “reads” poorly within the environment. Addressing this concern, SN&F optimized the logo, achieving better legibility and continued recognition, ultimately applying it within a contemporary convex shaped freestanding signform. The new logotype, coupled with a statewide expansion, permitted the development of a corporate signage conversion as they retrofitted the signage program within their existing banking system as well as implementation at expansion branches in Houston, Austin, Corpus Christi, McAllen and San Antonio. SN&F masterplanned concepts and sign “styles” were implemented by banking in-house staff through multiple vendors as required for a single day “roll-out” of their new acquisitions.
Located within the Louisville Medical Center, Alliant Health is a three Hospital system that was once three independent facilities. The Administration desired to consolidate all signage efforts into one which unifies and coordinates the overall wayfinding efforts. As part of Alliant Health System, Kosair Children’s Hospital signage reinforces the overall AHS unique identity, by using an approach that creates a playful environment for children to feel comfortable.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital Redevelopment Project, Chicago, Illinois
As nationally recognized healthcare wayfinding and signage consultants, The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends was retained to partner with the Architectural and Interiors Design Team undertaking the replacement hospital for the Redevelopment Project at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Ill. This interconnected 23 and 17 story, two-city block facility, represents the crown jewel in the Northwestern Hospital System. SN&F undertook an extensive reprogramming and schematic design development, permitting the project to focus on addressing the public and staff needs and requirements, while aligning budgetary and timing concerns to meet very tight project schedules.

Medical Center Hospital, Center for Women & Infants, Odessa, Texas
The expansion of the Ector County Medical Center with the new Center for Women & Infants resulted in the reconfiguration of the overall campus layout and accessing. This expansion justified the master planning of a new campus wayfinding directional and entrance/building identification program, as well as an interior signage concept for the Women’s Center.
St. John Hospital & Medical Center, Van Elslander Pavilion, Detroit, Michigan
The original scope of this project was a complete image, wayfinding, wayshowing implementation throughout this established Detroit healthcare provider. Financial constraints due to the national/local economy required adaptation for implementation within the newly constructed Van Elslander Heart Center. This highly modular and interchangeable program is based upon the use of magnetic graphic inserts which can adapt to a myriad of layout permutations. Using stock elements of the ASI Infinity System and a in-house support staff, this program adds a touch of “color and graphic identity to the overall interior program.

Registration/Check-In With a major addition being blended into an existing major regional facility, there was the need to update and soften the visual appearance of an interior signage program within a Women’s Hospital. The use of a matching wood divider strip, wood grained modular graphic inserts and a curved graphic field, all enhance the overall interiors’ built environment.
Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine, Grapevine, Texas
The need for multi-functional, ease of relocation and substantial construction, Baylor Healthcare received multiple freestanding Modulex “Pacific” insert, directory/ map paneled kiosks. These units, base weighted to permit reasonable public abuse, can be moved with ease (concealed rollers to assist with movement, but with the capability of being “locked” into place), allow complete User versatility and adaptability as the need might dictate. The construction of the graphic inserts, are modular and match similar directional wayfinding elements within these facilities.
Collin Ridge Business Park, Vantage Companies, Dallas, Texas
A combination landscaping study with monumental branding opportunities, SN&F created a branding presence for Vantage Development in a northern Dallas community. Seasonal planting and native grass movement reflect the attention to detail required to enhance the Center’s presence within the community.
Dallas Technology Center, Vantage Companies, Dallas, Texas
Vantage Development (Dallas) required a major, statement piece to identify a substancial regional technology park. The resulting 60’ warped, bow shaped, double sided monument established a benchmark branding opportunity. Viewed at distances of over three (3) miles, it has created a very clean, elegant wayfinding point on the visual horizon.
High Point Center, Vantage Companies, Dallas, Texas
Vantage Development (Dallas) developed a unique corporate building for multiple tenants. As a complement to the architecture, SN&F created a statement piece of two “flying wings positioned back-to-back, which totally enhanced the main entrance landscaping and overall branding presence.
Spohn Hospital, Corpus Christi, Texas
Spohn Hospital is located on the bayfront of Corpus Cristi Bay, which required material and paint specifications to endure the demands of hurricane force winds and the abrasive nature of salt-water abuse. These branding elements all have a very high gloss finish (permitting automotive style refinishing) as well as internal structural detailing to permit almost any weather condition which might be thrown at it.

Sandcastle Competition, Houston, Texas
Golden Bucket Winners (First Place), 2005 AIA-Houston
With a team of 11 creative designers and their spouses, a 10 cubic yard mound of damp sand, buckets of old rusty shovels (used from the last 9 competitions), rakes, mortar tools, spoons, squirt bottles, lots of buckets & pails, 1 ice cream scoop, 8 Igloos, 3 tents and a remembrance of our childhood, The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends took on the challenge of 84 Architectural & General Contractor teams in the 2005 AIAHouston Sandcastle Competition and proceeded to demonstrate that a Wayfinding Signage Consultant has the capacity to create and execute the best sandcastle, bar none. Awarded for our childish efforts (playing pancake, dribble, pack and smooth) SN&F upset the architectural community by winning the prestigious Golden Bucket, for a hand crafted traditional sandcastle (First Place for those who have not competitively played in the sand...). As SN&F was the only signage consultant represented in this year’s competition, it was an absolute show of creative force which only further demonstrates our design capabilities within the architectural community. If we can do this with sand, imagine what we can do for your wayfinding & signage program.
2006 AIA-Houston Sandcastle Competition,
Houston, Texas Golden Bucket (1st Place), Legends of Sandcastle (Best of the Best), Best Team Signage (which is what we do)
For the past 20+ years on the first Saturday in June, Houston area architects, designers, engineers and contractors have taken their tools to Galveston, Texas for what is considered one of the world’s largest sandcastle competitions. This year’s annual contest had 89 teams with their sights (and shovels) set on winning the prestigious “Golden Bucket” award. For The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends it was our 10th year of participation and we were prepared to rise to the occasion! More importantly, we were challenged by the prize the Legends of Sandcastle, a sub-competition of all the past winners of the Golden Bucket contending to be the Best-of-the Best!. The staff of SN&F alongside our clients and close friends from across the country, not only rose to the occasion, we swept the TRIPLE CROWN of awards, taking home the Golden Bucket, the Legends of Sandcastle & the Best Team Signage awards.
Our perceived value comes from establishing long term relationships with our clients, successfully addressing the needs, expectations and schedule/budget constraints, assuring an outstanding wayfinding/wayshowing effort, time and time again, as well as assuring complete Patient Satisfaction! How may we be of assistance to you, today?
