The program for the fire station included a CPR classroom, dormitory and living quarters for the firemen, and an equipment room/locker area for all of their tools. We also had to include a water garden into the site for water harvesting needs.

Tower Project

Tower Project (contd.)

Site Plan

The tower was designed by Christopher Perez and I in Professor Stevens studio during the fall. This quarter we were to focus on high rise construction techniques.

The tower is located in downtown Shreveport and serves as a new office and R&D headquarters for Exxon. We separated the program into two towers, regarding the orthogonal, heavy structure of research and development as a separate tower and the office program as another. Joining the towers we designed a central circulation through double height atriums that connect each floor.

Structure Plans with Mechanical

The next step, I began to scale specific parts of the building according to the program that would be included.

M.S.A.M. (contd.)

Longitudinal Section

The massing of the building started as the 3 dimensional version of the diagram

Here I started getting overlaps between program spaces and began to bring the idea of syncopation where the long bar of program on the east face is broken into segments.

Next I began to open up the first floor near the entry by lifting the mass off the first floor, now providing a covered entry into the museum from the adjacent parking.

Paul Rand

Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that's why it is so complicated.
