WHO WE ARE University Centre Farnborough shares its staff and facilities with Farnborough College of Technology. The College has been an accredited institution of the University of Surrey for many years. In 2013, ‘University Centre Farnborough’ was launched to continue this partnership, marked by the planning of a new University Centre Farnborough building, due to open in 2016.

CAMPUS AND FACILITIES LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE (LRC) The LRC provides you with an environment that supports group and individual learning as well as research. It has an extensive collection of books, journals, and electronic information services, including a wide range of eBooks and eJournals. Links to national and local libraries facilitate access to resources not available on site. The LRC also offers a book ordering service to students wishing to purchase textbooks. Study facilities include an Academic Study Centre, Wi-Fi access and open access 12
computers, which can be pre-booked from home. Staff are always pleased to assist you in making the best use of all the resources, IT facilities and Moodle, our Virtual Learning Environment. CATERING Food is served in the refectory (our main dining area) which offers a range of well-balanced hot and cold meals prepared on campus by catering staff. We are able to cater for all dietary requirements and staff will be happy to discuss them with you. There is also a deli bar and Starbucks coffee shop on the campus.

GYM There is a modern gym on campus available for use by all students at a very affordable fee; currently ÂŁ1.50 per visit (January 2015). The facility is typically available in the morning and early evening.
SUPPORT During your time as a student we aim to help you with any problems you encounter and make sure you know what support is available. Your personal tutor will usually be your first point of contact and you will have access to all the services below: ACADEMIC SUPPORT The Skills Development Centre can help you with course-related difficulties, such as organisation, assignment writing, essays, report writing and maths support.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT The College offers cash bursaries according to family income. Funds are also available to full and part-time students who may experience financial hardship during their studies.
MULTI-FAITH ROOM This self-contained quiet room has washing facilities and can be used at any time during the LRC’s opening hours for prayer or quiet reflection. Religious texts are also held in the room.
HEALTH AND WELLBEING A free, confidential counselling service is available on-site to help you with personal or emotional issues of all kinds, and our Student Health Adviser can provide general help to all students.
STUDENT SERVICES The Student Services team are happy to help you with any difficulties you experience during your studies or socially, from personal problems to financial matters.

The University Centre’s own gym facilities mean you can stay active throughout your studies too.
ACCOMMODATION Lots of our students decide to continue living at home whilst studying at University Centre Farnborough. As well as being cost effective, this helps many students find (or continue) part-time work and stay in touch with friends – as well as making new ones. Student housing is provided by local, private landlords who we can put you in touch with. A continually updated register of available accommodation is available from the Student Services team. Some timetables permit students from further afield to use affordable hotels such as Travelodge for one or two nights per week whilst continuing to live further away.

ROUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS Higher Education is available to everyone. Throughout this guide you will see each course’s typical entry requirements measured in UCAS points, but we welcome students from all backgrounds to apply. You may wish to apply if you have: • A Diploma, A Levels or NVQ Level 3 • BTEC/OCR National qualifications • Successfully completed an Access to HE course • An Advanced Apprenticeship • Other professional or specialist qualifications • Relevant work experience as a mature applicant • An International Baccalaureate More detailed entry requirements can be found online – see each subject area in this guide for the web address.

OUR COURSES Three Year Bachelor’s Honours Degrees These usually take three years to complete if studying fulltime and lead to a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours. Their abbreviations are Arts: BA (Hons), Science: BSc (Hons) and Engineering: BEng (Hons). Two Year Bachelor’s FastTrack Joint Honours Degrees Our Humanities and Social Sciences degrees involve the same amount of work as a Three Year Bachelor’s Degree, but condensed into two years of study. Students will need to be confident that they can commit to an intensive programme of study to succeed in this format. Students finish a year early and pay lower total fees. Two Year Foundation Degrees These are the equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor’s Degree. They focus on the vocational elements of a subject and

have more accessible entry requirements. Their abbreviations are Arts: FdA, Science: FdSc and Engineering: FdEng. One Year Top-up Degree Having completed a Foundation Degree or HND, these courses can convert your qualification to a Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) by completing a third year of study. Their abbreviations are the same as the Three Year Bachelor’s Degrees. Look for ‘Hons; top-up’ in the course listings for these degrees. HNC & HND The Higher National Certificate (HNC) teaches skills for a specific career and is equivalent to the first year of a Bachelor’s Degree. The Higher National Diploma (HND) is similar but at a higher level, equivalent to the second year of a Bachelor’s Degree. An HND can be converted into a Bachelor’s Degree via a Top-up Degree.
FINANCE If you’re from England and are studying for your first degree or other higher education qualification, you won’t have to pay your tuition fees upfront. Government loans and grants are available from Student Finance England to cover your tuition fees and help towards your living costs. Visit www.gov.uk/studentfinance for the most up to date information and how your own circumstances may affect what you will receive. You don’t pay anything back until you’ve left university or college and your income is over £21000* per year. WHAT FINANCIAL HELP IS AVAILABLE? Tuition Fee Loan This Government loan is available to all students and covers your course fees in full. It is repayable after graduation. The amount you receive doesn’t depend on your household income and you can apply for up to £9000* a year.
Maintenance Loan This helps towards your living costs, such as food, rent and books. The amount you can borrow is means tested. Like the Tuition Fee Loan, you begin repaying once you earn more than £21000*. Maintenance Grant Grants also help with your living costs and are means tested. You don’t have to pay any of this money back and could get up to £3387*. UNIVERSITY CENTRE FARNBOROUGH BURSARY Many students are eligible to receive £2000 cash in their first year of study, paid for by University Centre Farnborough. CASE STUDY VICTORIA GREEN Commercial Officer at Siemens Graduated 2013 – BA (Hons) Business Management My current role is as a commercial officer for Siemens, with responsibility for the budgeting and forecasting of HR services such as recruitment, learning and pensions. I am currently studying for a CIMA qualification too. The role is challenging and gives me the opportunity to work with international businesses. The Business Management course at Farnborough enabled me to progress to this role, by giving me a wide range of knowledge including project management, accounting and HR. The course gave me a great and varied base of business knowledge, which aids me in my day-today work activities and also the CIMA qualification. Before the course I hadn’t studied accounting but really enjoyed it when I did, and found that I performed well at it. Now it’s my profession!

CASE STUDY DEBORAH WILSON Befriending Coordinator and Counsellor Graduated 2013 – Therapeutic Counselling I’m currently a befriending coordinator with Age UK, while I work towards my BACP accreditation. I also work as a custody intervention worker for a charity working with addictions, and am a volunteer counsellor for the Survivors Trust, which supports people who have been raped or sexually abused. The course at Farnborough did what a lot of counselling courses don’t seem to – put a lot of emphasis on helping me to become more selfaware and responsible for my own feelings, so that I could work ethically and professionally with clients. I am now studying for a part-time Master’s in Developmental Psychopathology, which I plan to use in my counselling work. I now aim to work in private practice helping young people.
THERAPEUTIC COUNSELLING You will gain a recognised counselling qualification for agency level work and will have completed sufficient training hours to apply for BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) Accreditation. To meet the complete course assignments, you will be required to study at home, including the completion of a Learning Review throughout the two years. You will need to complete a minimum of 60 hours of personal counselling during the two years, with a counsellor approved by teaching staff; the cost of personal therapy is not included in the course fees. Along with this you will complete 100 hours of supervised client work, during the two years of the course, in an ethically suitable placement approved by teaching staff. Therapeutic Counselling is also available at levels 2–5. HEALTHCARE PRACTICE You will gain the knowledge and skills to progress into NHS Band 4 assistant practitioner job roles, ranging from dementia care to sexual health. Industry work experience is available locally at a range of settings for our Healthcare students. All full-time students can tailor their work placements to the career paths they are interested in, from care homes to the ambulance service. This involvement will provide valuable experience and put theory into practice.
CAREERS Applied Science graduates can progress to an undergraduate degree or professional qualification at another institution, or seek job opportunities in laboratory work and related careers. Students on our Counselling course go on to work in both private and employed practice, with some also volunteering their free time to counsel for charities to increase their experience. Graduates from Healthcare Practice can continue studying at a higher level for an Honours Degree with another institution, or progress into NHS Band 4 assistant practitioner job roles.

CASE STUDY CHARLOTTE RIMMINGTON Studying for a Master’s in Investigative Psychology Graduated 2014 – BSc (Hons) Psychology and Criminology During my degree I was enlightened as to the different aspects within the psychology discipline. After a fascinating module on offender profiling, I chose to apply for a Master’s in Investigative Psychology at the University of Huddersfield. My new lecturers were incredibly interested to hear of the fast-track degree at Farnborough. The intensive nature of the degree and accompanying skills I have learned have helped with the sheer volume of work that is required in a Master’s course. Similarly, the combination of studying Psychology and Criminology together put me at a great advantage as I was able to apply both sets of knowledge to my course and studies. I am now planning on focusing on the psycholinguistic aspect of investigative psychology with the hope of working within the language and intelligence field.

Studying at Farnborough was great because of the small class sizes, which increased the amount of attention lecturers gave you. I currently work at an award winning studio in Surrey that specialises in branding and web design. Working with local and international clients makes it a very rewarding and challenging role, allowing me to utilise and build on all of the skills that I had learned whilst studying. During my studies, I took the opportunity to write my own brief for my final year project. This meant I could tailor my work to create a portfolio piece that would help me secure a job in a studio specialising in the type of design I wanted to do. The tutors were incredibly dedicated and their support, including interview preparation, was fundamental to me getting my current job. I also had the chance to undertake work experience in a studio, which gave an insight to how the industry works and how to work on real design jobs for real clients.

CASE STUDY MATTHEW THOMPSON Exercise Therapist Graduated 2013 – BSc (Hons) In Sport Science (Exercise and Health Management) I work as a freelance exercise therapist at a physiotherapy centre, where clients who need further training and strengthening from injuries are referred to me from physiotherapists. I also moved to Dubai for six months to take up a role as a personal trainer and gym assistant, where I not only took classes and clients, but was involved with marketing and promotion. At Farnborough the different subject areas, from nutrition to sport psychology, were really good for developing all round knowledge – something I don’t think a shorter course could do. The practical elements, equipment and tutors were spot on for me and I’m really happy with how I’ve progressed. I think the degree demonstrates you have a more in-depth knowledge and can therefore provide a better service to the client.

MATURE STUDENTS If you are over the age of 21 before you start your course, you will be regarded as a mature student. As a mature student, you may not need to satisfy the requirements listed here but you will need to show the ability to undertake high level work and demonstrate that you have the necessary study skills. Where there are course requirements, you will be asked to demonstrate an equivalent knowledge of the subject. Formal applications by mature students should be submitted through UCAS in the normal way or direct to the University Centre for parttime courses. An interview is normally required. Many of our mature students are local to the area and are studying on a part-time basis or working towards a professional qualification whilst maintaining fulltime employment. At Farnborough we have seen a steady increase in the number of mature students applying for our degree programmes and hope that this trend will continue. 46
OTHER ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS Farnborough offers the Access to Higher Education Diploma course that can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis as a preliminary qualification to your degree. EXTRA INFORMATION REFUNDS AND WITHDRAWALS POLICY The successful provision of courses depends upon the fees students pay. Courses can only be started if the income for the course is sufficient to cover all the costs involved. The College therefore cannot refund course fees except in the following circumstances 1. The
course is cancelled before it starts or is closed by the College and no suitable alternative is available.
2. The
student suffers a serious illness; refunds may be made on a pro-rata basis on the production of a medical certificate

(please note examination and registration fees can only be refunded provided your registration has not been completed with the awarding body). 3. The
student withdraws before the start date of the course; however there will be an administration fee of £30 charged.
4. For
HE loan funded students that withdraw early from an HE course the student will be liable for 25% of the year’s fee if they start but don’t complete the first term*; 50% if they start but don’t complete term 2; and all fees if they start but don’t complete term 3.
Please note that the choice of subjects may be limited by considerations of timetable, staffing and/or available places on a course. INSURANCE The College Corporation will not accept liability for the loss or damage of the personal effects of students on College premises. Students are advised to mark all property clearly and to insure their property against fire and theft where possible.
A refund form is available from the Department Administrator or the Information Centre and must be completed and returned to the Departmental Office together with the original receipt, certificate of enrolment and supporting medical documentation. If the student withdraws from their course for any reason other than those stated above, any outstanding instalment payments will be collected by the College. In exceptional cases, consideration may be given to the student’s individual circumstances.
