– MITAS PRESENTS THE HC2000 VF TYRES –

SMALL TYRES PARTICULARLY WELL-ADAPTED TO HIGHER-HORSEPOWER TRACTORS

Traxion Harvest Those tyres provides an higher load capacity in combination with a lower inflation pressure in order to provide excellent traction efficiency and a better ground protection in among to reduce the soil compaction. Therefore, those tyres are particularly matching the needs of the modern potato growers who are working with bigger planting machines and tractors in order to boost their capacity. This year, two Belgian customers worked so far with those new tyres for potato planting operations. Contractor Deroo is a vegetable specialist and is also planting and harvesting potatoes for customers. Last season, in order to boost the capacity of their planting operations, they transformed an existing potato planter to build a 6-row planter. To face the higher weight of this mounted combination and to reduce the soil compaction, which is a very important item for their customers, they equipped their John Deere tractor with a dual set of HC2000 VF tyres, as well in the front as in the rear. The rear tyres are 380/105 R 54 and have an height of 2,17 meter.

Those small tyres make it possible to drive at a 40% lower inflation pressure, which is an important asset, as small tyres otherwise always an higher inflation pressure requires. The Fendt of Eric Avermaete is working in combination with an impressive 8-row planter and ridger with solid fertilizer unit in the three point linkage. Eric: ‘we wanted to work with small tyres because we didn’t want to create compaction in the potato rows. We have choosen for single small tyres because the potato planter is towed, and to use a track width of 3 meter in order to improve furthermore the stability of the tractor. After this first planting season we are particularly pleased with those 380/105 R 54 HC2000 VF tyres. Thanks to the lower inflation pressure of those tyres we also see a ‘track’ effect, with a better traction efficiency, especially in difficult conditions. In my eyes, those HC2000 VF helps us to boost productivity, but also to achieve perfection in potato planting.’

By: Steven Mahabier & Janny Kok In its quest to further improve their export market the Dutch potato sector is supported by a worldwide network of agricultural councelors of the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs. This network operates from more than 50 locations (Dutch embassies) and covers more than 70 countriesand supports Dutch businesses by providing information about compliance with rules and regulations in countries in which there is a growing interest in Dutch produce. The network and ‘home base’ ministry of Economic Affairs guides those seeking for support along possible pitfalls. Gert Stiekema (coordinator of the agricultural network) is outspoken about the reason why: “export is important for the Netherlands and that of the agricultural sector in particular.” In a way, he voices the policy of recently outgoing Dutch junior minister Martijn van Dam, as laid down in his letter to Parliament headlined ‘Future Directed Agrofood Export’: “The agricultural sector

Alltogether, PotatoEurope already exists for 10 years now. From a national event, the trade fair has now grown into a platform with a global audience. That’s something to be proud of. It is also beautiful for the event to take place in the Netherlands; a prominent potato country and at the heart of all knowledge. Max Eyth, founder of mother organization DLG, intended to stimulate progress in the field of agriculture with DLG. We are talking December 11, 1885. A hundred years later, this is still the power of DLG and an incredible amount of innovations have taken place since. The domain of potatoes remains an exciting world that is constantly on the move in all areas. With PotatoEurope, we keep this energy alive by bringing together all the knowledge. To meet each other, chain wide, will provide energy and inspiration to keep the innovation going. Knowledge sessions, all present companies and live demonstrations of the latest resources and technologies will inspire the grower to consider investing in sustainability.

ful overview of what happens in each crop from planting up to the rooting process. This makes a very precise cost price calculation. With this we seek to make the benefits of precision agriculture visible to our visitors.

the world. The world’s population continues to grow, environmental conditions change. The potato has the special feature to be able to grow nearly anywhere and therefore is able to feed mouths all over the world.

Costs should always outweigh the benefits. We understand that. For this reason, 30 hectares of potato field, has been prepared to be harvested during the trade fair. There are three applications used on this field: common, unplanned soil and variable planting. With an unmanned airplane, suitably named Precision Hawk, the growth of all potatoes is observed and filmed. This results into a beauti-

The fair will also give face to all the cutting edge innovations that already exist. There is so much to be fascinated about, but as beautifully sober as farmers usually are, many innovations remain invisible to the world. At PotatoEurope, we are setting a light on these innovations with our innovation price. The winning innovation will, of course, respond to the mission of Max Eyth, but also to a mission of

On the trade fair itself visitors will be offered a taste of what the potato has to offer. Eating together and tasting the different potato dishes, offers great opportunity to meet and inspire each other. I am also looking forward to meet you there too!

Agricultural counselors offerworldwide potato support contributes substantially to Dutch export. The international interest for Dutch produce and know-how is significant. As a result, there are quite a few opportunities for Dutch Agrofood enterprises to position themselves successfully in foreign markets in various parts of the world. The agricultural counselors’ focus is more and more on distinctive, sustainable Dutch produce. They also attract attention to the high-quality technology, knowledge, and know-how of the Dutch agricultural sector in the countries they are based.” The Agriculture Counselor Network recently developed new ways of informing the Dutch agricultural sector about developments abroad. “We noticed that, in the current digital world, businesses are in need for reliable and upto-date information about markets and regulation.. That is why we launched the website http://

www.agroberichtenbuitenland. nl/, which targets all Dutch (agri) companies interested in doing business abroad and exporting their products or services. The network is based at the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (Netherlands Enterprise Agency) in the Hague. This Agency supports entrepreneurs in their businesses at home and abroad, and as to how to make the difference in sustainable, agricultural, innovative and international entrepreneurship in cooperation with governmental bodies, knowledge centres, international organisations and much more relevant partners. Those involved in the potato sector, HZPC, Agrico, STET and Den Hartigh included, are well acquainted with the support that the Agricultural Counselors can give. In early 2017 they provided eight

varieties of potato plants to put up for show and explanation at farms in Uganda. These ‘farm shows’ are an attempt to encourage interest to potato growers and other relevant partners in the supply chain to use these varieties for improvement of their harvests. The Dutch government network is happy to report that the IFDC Resilient Efficient Agribusiness Chains (REACH-Uganda) is busy supporting further research in usable varieties in the years to come. It promised to do so in collaboration with other stakeholders in an effort to get the introduction of the varieties officially approved. It would certainly support the potato trade in the region and may feed the population of nearly 170 million people.

LC Packaging Agri

‘Sustainable packaging is the only way forward for the potato sector’ Sustainability is becoming increasingly important, not only to consumers, but also businesses: There is a growing demand for sustainable products offered by companies with the right expertise. This trend excites Boudewijn van Fraassen, who is LC Packaging’s Director of Agri Packaging. “Our goal is to support our clients in delivering unharmed products to their customers. Sustainability is an important part of this process.”

By: Steven Mahabier & Ingrid van Batenburg In 1923 the company began as a jute trading house and repairer. Due to the repair services farmers were able to re-use bags. This shows that sustainable solutions have been one of the core values of the company since its early years. Sustainability is not only reflected by the company its products and services, but also by its corporate culture and partnerships.

small-scale farmers, as these can contain up to 50 kilos. Fraassen: “One of the improvements LC Packaging has done to the jute bag is embedding additional ventilation stripes.”

easily useable in automated environments, where machines can pick up to 1000 kilos of crops. Packaging’s ventilated big bags can reach a maximum of 1000 kilos potatoes.

Nowadays, the company has more than 1,000 employees; 163 million euros in revenues; 70,000 m2 of packaging storage and is present in 16 countries. LC Packaging implemented the sustainable approach throughout the company. The company its five-year sustainability plan is summarized in its sustainability vision 2022, which is published on their website recently. The jute bag and the big bag: a durable solution for everyone Both the jute bags and the big bags are not only ventilated, but these are also sustainable solutions, Fraassen explains. Jute bags are solely made of natural ingredients. The material is considered to be one of the best packaging for the transport of potatoes and other types of vegetables since centuries. Jute bags are mostly used by

Sustainable partnerships with customers and suppliers LC Packaging values fair trade and long-lasting relationships with its suppliers. That is what it’s all about, according to Fraassen: “The last 80 years we have been traveling the world in order to find partners who have the same corporate values as we do. Consequently, we are aware of what we purchase and offer to our customers”LC Packaging has built good relationships with the best suppliers in the world, some of these have been the companies partner for over 30 years. Some of our competitors are buying from Asian jute traders. These traders do not know where the goods are coming from nor how the suppliers really operate. Thus, LC Packaging thinks that this is an irresponsible way of doing business. “Sustainability does not have to be expensive”, Fraassen adds. “The price differences are minimal and the customer has the certainty that the packaging is of high quality and suppliers whom embrace fair trade.

Large-scale farmers need larger types of packaging, which are

Because many farms are growing in size, automated packaging processes are becoming more popular around the globe. Fraassen has observed exciting developments in the potato sector: “In the Netherlands, Belgium, Scotland and Denmark potato farmers have fully embraced an automated packaging process.” Many smaller farmers in these and other countries are at a crossroad: either they focus on growth or let large packaging companies do it for them. “The Netherlands is in the lead in this development, but the trend is visible in France and Germany too.” LC packaging has already invested in the Baxmatic concept ten years ago. This process entails the filling and stitching of jute bags automatically.

Practice what you preach: sustainable organization As mentioned earlier, sustainability is also reflected by the internal culture. Fraassen shares: “We select the best people: We invest in their personal development to make sure that their job meets their interest and in addition our remuneration policy is above market standards. Consequently, many employees stay with us for countless years.” According to Fraassen, the sustainable approach is natural to LC Packaging: “We are convinced that this is the only right way of doing business.”

“Precision farming serving the field crop”

Since a couple of years, precision farming has become more practical than before. Marc Devriese is Business director of the Benelux group CASE IH & STEYR. He tells about the latest state of the art.

The satellite data transferred are input for drafting coloured, digital data maps with a legend to the farmer. From this source, we are able to derive details at field level.”

ming is responsive to this and can be extremely useful, as at the end of day, it allows a precise control on agronomy”, explains Devriese. “Be it to reduce overlaps, save on fuel and labour, better dosage of input application or simplify operation of tillage, sowing, crop treatment and harvest.”

Likewise, local variations in yield by combine harvesting indicate heterogeneity per area in the field. These collected data are also delivered to their owner, the farmer. Drawing agronomic conclusions is left to his expertise together with the crop supervisor´s.

By: Steven Mahabier & Jeroen Boland The commercial business unit Case IH is leading falls within CNH Industrial Group, a division of the Fiat corporation. He explains: “CNH Industrial have installed their proper GPS all over Europe. This ultimately guarantees an extreme accuracy level of about two cm in the field. Every farmer with a login can connect his tractor by means of a GPS antenna and immediately recognize his location.” Pressure by external challenges Currently, agriculture experiences strong outside pressure: Demands of production increase are huge, quality standards get stricter and regulations tighter. “Application of agrochemicals are under close environmental scrutiny. Precision far-

Field demonstration At PotatoEurope, the company shows how their Puma tractor, GPS and additional techniques gather field data in so-called ´task charts´ - both fallow fields and with a crop cover. Marc Devriese: “Even when plowing, the tillage device can be steered independently through precision technology. Fuel consumption and traction are some of the registered data. These indirectly inform on soil compaction or moisture content.

Serving potato cultivation extremely well The ´task chart´ maps reveal a dynamic approach of soil and crop. The next step, precision treatment, is again a technical task. It concerns steering through ´translated´ GPS data. The task charts are being adapted to the field task execution by machinery, for instance leaf fertilising, is again linked to GPS. “In this huge project we collaborate with PrecisionHawk, the specialised drone supplier”, adds Devriese. “A number of our dealers together deploy drones, which deliver data to contracted farmers. By aerial photography, the device detects the exact biomass coverage and quality of the leaves: Is the crop suffering from some stress factor or shortage? What explains heterogeneity of the crop cover?” “The task chart again signals a problem or deficiency, for which a relevant advice can be derived. We learn from our maps where to increase or reduce certain inputs, or optimise a fungicide treatment.

Project precision agriculture CASE IH & STEYR

In this way, we may even be able to respond to effects of extreme weather patterns relating to climate change. Since Benelux and Germany supply the majority of table potatoes in Europe, precision farming is most applicable. Very accurate tillage and treatments are important, since potato growth profits most of this.” Attend the demonstration The PotatoEurope demonstration field of seven hectare has so far yielded more than twenty maps. The field presentation of harvest and tillage is combined with field data gathered by students of Aeres Hogeschool. These maps will be presented at the fair to agriculture press, dealers and crop supervisors. “Precision farming has been theory until recently. Now we are heading fast towards practical application”, continues Devriese. “At PotatoEurope we show how this works in practice, as well as the ‘feel and touch’ of our head start. Our company division is aware of the advance in precision farming. Dealers can readily show this to their customers. Every visitor is most welcome at the presentation area and the demo field, for a real feel of the power of precision farming.” CASE IH & STEYR will present their Fielddata Project twice a day. ‘Because we love potatoes’ Love for the craft is what made Stefaan Dierickx return to the agricultural sector after years of absence. “To enjoy what grows and flourishes, and to enjoy the people is what brought me back. At AVR we prefer to visit our customers in their own environment, there we hear their wishes and think about the best solution for the breeder.”

By: Anneke Raven Continuity is only one of the ways in which AVR shows its customer friendliness. “We’re 24/7 ready to help people with their questions. Machines are delivered year round and we continue to develop to the wishes and growing demands. Precision agriculture in particular becomes a strong focus.” says Dierickx. Globally strong “It’s our ambition to meet every potential customer in the world and grab our chances.” This, the new production hall and the acquisition of a production house in Veendam, which doubled the production capacity, has made that AVR’s turnover has tripled in ten years time. Of course, this growth is based on the desire to serve every producer with beautiful machinery, but it also reduces risk:

“Where one market is weak one year, it might be strong elsewhere. The workload remains steady and we remain strong.” Falcon and Cobra; gentle storing “We are very pleased with the feedback on our storing machines, the Falcon and the Cobra,” Dierickx says delighted. “The Falcon has a hydraulic propulsion, with the lowest possible drop heights and it may be equipped with different types of roller sets. The storing continues in an ultimately potato friendly way with the Cobra. The Cobra has a wide conveyor belt and twin propulsion, which makes that the belt never slips. This again allows large capacity. With the complete control over the storing process, the breeder achieves the best quality possible.”

since spring this year, but first presentation to the public will be at PotatoEurope,” says an enthusiasic Dierickx. The Ceres 450 is a pulled harvesting machine, which returns into: a larger bunker is possible and the harvesting machine may be equipped with a fertilizer, a powder, a granulate and/ or a spraying installation. In combina-

tion with the GE-Force C, with its six-hook equipment, the Ceres 450 simultaneously works the soil. “The soil becomes better crumbled and reduces fuel consumption.” All, of course, for the love of the craft, the crop and its growers.

Lapack B.V.

There is a growing demand for potato storage, now that potatoes are becoming more and more popular. Packaging producer Lapack from Musselkanaal seizes this opportunity with both hands by means of an innovative potato box – the A-box – the market is ready for, says Director Sales & Marketing Jurgen Bouter. By: Steven Mahabier & Ingrid van Batenburg “In recent years, we have seen the sales double every year. At present, there are about 45,000 A-boxes on the market. And most importantly, customer satisfaction is very high. This is the quality we strived for and which can really help farmers improve their potato storage.” Potato box re-invented Lapack delivered the conventional potato box to customers from 1962 onwards, when the company

produced its first potato boxes. This box laid the foundation for what the company now delivers to your doorstep: pallets, boxes, crates, and other wooden product carriers and logistic materials. In 2009, Lapack decided to re-market the potato box. The company developed a new kind of body to suit modern drying facilities. The design was based on customer demand in combination with the knowledge and experience the organization had with the production of industrial crates. Better aeration, stability and durability The box is provided with profiled corner styles. Furthermore, the distance between the boards used for the box can be custom fitted, for better aeration. The inclusion of the boards also gives the box better stability and durability. Another practical detail can be spotted by those who regularly work with these types of boxes and crates: the corners are roun-

Potato box shows Lapack’s innovative nature ded off. This is very convenient, as boards on conventional boxes are prone to being knocked off when handling them. With the new boxes this is next to impossible. “Lapack sells much less repair wood because of this,” a laughing Bouter says. And then, in a serious tone: “Of course, that’s good news for durability.” Growing international interest in A-boxes When the new box was first introduced to the market, they were in demand all over the country. That meant an overhaul of the logistical process was needed. Bouter: “It isn’t wise to produce a box, assemble it at the factory and transport it in its finished state at a customer who lives hundreds of kilometers away. That wouldn’t be sustainable.” In the past, Lapack delivered within a 100 kilometer radius: from Musselkanaal to the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe. To get more grip on the national market, Lapack opened a new

production facility in Gorredijk, to supply the Flevopolder, among other regions. But what if you could organize it in such a way that the boxes could be assembled at their destination? That question set Lapack to work, designing a mobile production line that made it possible to deliver further away, even across Dutch borders. Now, Lapack’s transports can hold 4 to 5 times as many boxes as they used to. The box is prepared at the factory and then goes on to the customer. The box is assembled on-site. The development of the A-box shows that Lapack is a true innovator. Another example is the nano-coating the company is currently working on, that will ensure that potato boxes remain free of dirt and bacteria. “The developments are in its early stages, but the first results are promising.”

mer, cross-contaminations are prevented and shelf life is extended. This reduces the waste of valuable produce, both for the retailer and for the consumer, saves costs and results in a healthier agro-food product. ‘Healthy from earth to mouth’ It is our ambition is to further translate its 20 years of experience and knowledge into even more benefits for the entire chain: ‘healthy from earth to mouth’. Also by developing smart clean water technology, VAM Watertech is able to contribute to this health. VAM Watertech masters several purification techniques and ensures its installations to be perfectly tailored to the crop and requirements of their customers. Cooperation The agro-food sector is going through a process of significant change through continuous improvement in efficiency and stricter food safety requirements, and needs to provide more added value to the products. Full commitment is demanded from all actors in the chain, and besides far-reaching specialization of each individual partner, this also requires good cooperation bet-

ween all partners. VAM Watertech has therefore specialized in only purification of process water of agro-food products, particularly root vegetables and hard fruits. As water purification plays a small part within the entire production process, we collaborate with various producers. In these fruitful partnerships we always seek to benefit and strengthen all stakeholders. More information: www.vam-watertech.com

Broere Beregening B.V.

25 years of ‘enjoying’ the power of water! When I ask Arie-Jan Broere to look back on 25 years of Broere Beregening and to say what he’s most proud of, there’s not one but a lot of highlights. With even more fascinating developments up their sleeve, the development of highlights continues on! By: Anneke Raven According to Broere, their success is thanks to all the innovative people in his team: “You got to get with the times, the team as well. We train them to think outside of the box.” You can only get to innovation together, says Broere. It is therefore that he, for example, invites people from the university to think cases through and works together with organizations like the Dutch Waterschap. His wife Dirkje Broere is also not to be missed in the company: “It’s good to have women in a men’s world. They look at things diffe-

rently.” Broere praises his wife for her punctuality and for always seeing the full picture. “She’s the oil in the process, sees how the team is doing. That’s important.’ Water productivity, a beautiful concept!’ “Water productivity,” says Broere enthusiastically, “a beautiful concept!” You could say that all Broere Beregening’s projects promote optimal water productivity. With Fryslân Fernijt, Broere is now working on a stunning project with underground water storage: “In the Netherlands, we now pump out excess water. We have designed plants to store this extra

water underneath the plot to use this in another stage.” Solar and ZigBee Solar and ZigBee: terms that may sound futuristic. However, very interesting for farmers of this era. Broere: “In 2015, we implemented our first solar-driven drip irrigation project.” Such a system would not have been possible for Broere 25 years ago. Let alone to control it from a distance by phone. The latest novelty is an irrigation system controlled by ZigBee: “ZigBee provides bi-directional information so farmers know what’s happening with their crops in the field and are able to respond more adequa-

tely.” This is of great interest to the biodynamic market and also for the non-western market where everything is new after all, Broere explains. Top position Broere Irrigation has acquired a top position. A position that Broere has reached by being well aware of what’s happening in the world, by being in the right place with the right people with the right energy to go forward. Broere Beregening will gladly meet you and to talk about the progress you want to make.

Potato Business School

For more than five years now, the Potato Business School Emmeloord has been transferring knowledge of potatoes to international groups active in the potato sector. In 2011, eight Emmeloord companies joined forces and today, 215 international potato professionals have attended specialised potato courses. The complete potato chain is based in Emmeloord: seed potato companies with their breeding stations as well as innovative distributors and manufactureres of field, storage and grading equipment and also the suppliers of fertilizers and crop protection. What these companies all have in common is that they serve a large, international market. The customers in this market require more and more knowledge about the potato in order to ensure higher quality crops in their countries or regions. In order to do this in a more professional way, the PBSE was set up in 2011 with the purpose of providing people abroad who were involved in the potato industry with high quality, up-to-date knowledge. By: Jan van Maldegem / Potato Business School At the start of the school, the companies Agrico, Den Hartigh, Greve Agrotechniek/GroeNoord, (KWS Potato), ProfytoDSD, Stet Holland, Tolsma-Grisnich and TPC, together with the NAK as a knowledge partner, decided to draw up their own practical and in-depth potato school. In this course, the PBSE puts theory and practice together. During this fourday training course, participants are submerged in a broad-based potato programme at the participating companies. On the first day, seed potato company specialists unveil all the ins and outs of breeding, variety choice and logistical matters about the potato trade.

Next, the participants are taught the latest developments relating to fertilisation and the role of soil in regard to potato growing. Then the Dutch General Inspection Service for Agricultural Seed and Seed Potatoes (NAK) will explain the inspection system. After professional explanations about disease control and the diagnostic issues that are part of it, the participants are shown the practical aspects of potato mechanisation and storage. After which the course participants can return home inspired by lots of new ideas. Creating a network An important additional positive effect of participating in the Potato Business School course is that the potato network will increase

significantly. Getting in touch with potato specialist from all over the world creates a new dimension in the professional life of all people who attended the course. There is enough time included in the course to discuss and exchange ideas with other participants (including a nice recreation program in a typical Dutch nature reserve).

Mathew Mtigumwe is Permanent Secretary* at the Tanzanian Ministry of Agriculture, a country awash with political developments. After The Netherlands scrapped Tanzania off the list of countries it supports through aid in 2010, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs maintained a close relationship with the East-African country. The African continent is an appealing market for the Dutch private sector, which is export-driven and leading in innovation. We spoke to Mr. Mtigumwe during the Tanzania Agri-business event in The Hague, which was organized by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Dutch Enterprise Agency and the Netherlands-African Business Council. By: Arne Doornebal In Tanzania there is ongoing potato production, but it is not being harvested in vast quantities like in The Netherlands. A public-private partnership, involving The Dutch government and nine private companies, is about to change that, according to Mr. Mtigumwe. Could you describe the potato sector in Tanzania as it currently is? Potatoes are now mainly grown in the southern part of the country. There, you’ll find extensive highlands with a lot of fertile land and a favourable climate. This is the most well-known potato producing area. But also in the North, near the border with Uganda and Rwanda, there are some potato farmers. But despite the fertile land, we still don’t produce enough to supply the local market. We are still depending on imports. How popular are potatoes in Tanzania, a country with an area 23 times that of The Netherlands? In Tanzania we are more familiar with the sweet potato. The potato most common in The Netherlands is locally known as the ‘Irish Potato.’ It currently holds the 8th position in the list of most-produced food crops. But because it is being consumed widely, there is a lot of demand. Is that why you came to The Netherlands? 18

‘The potato sector in Tanzania is about to take off’ Yes indeed. The Dutch Government has invited us for a three-day visit. During this visit we have met several entrepreneurs from the potato industry, and we have also been speaking to politicians. Our goal is a large increase in the potato production in Tanzania. The Dutch government is set to launch a ‘potato expertise centre’ together with nine Dutch companies that are active in the sector. This centre, officially known as the CD-PIT (centre for the development of the potato industry in Tanzania) will be located in the Southern town of Mbeya. What are your feelings about this public-private partnership?

Dutch company Agrico, based in Emmeloord, has already been involved in neighbouring Kenya. In 2013, a successful project was started in which potatoes were developed for several years in a bid to make them accustomed to the tropical climate.

Nederland BV

B.V.

I find this a great initiative. This is because we are talking about a cooperation between both the Dutch government as well as the Dutch companies. This ensures that the information available at the knowledge centre is not only theoretical but that it will be able to deliver very practical, hands-on advice to our potato growers. What is the most interesting aspect for you? The centre will get several different tasks, but I am mainly keen on the areas concerned with training and research. Local farmers from the region can receive training and advice on how to achieve higher yields. But I can also imagine that

students from the Tanzanian universities can learn a lot. Construction of the potato expertise centre is set to start this year, according to an ambitious plan that has now been laid out. What do you think the potato sector in Tanzania will look like five years from now? After five years, why are you asking that? That is way too long! I expect to see results within the next 12 months. Especially in the Southern Highlands which currently suffers from a lack of commercial growing. I expect this to take off very soon. *Permanent Secretary; the highest non-elected official in the ministry

AgroVent B.V.

Make your potato sleep and raise well AgroVent is keen on discovering new principles for potato storage, which explains their payoff ‘Innovation in Storage’. They develop reference projects with arable farmers in The Netherlands and abroad. Director Huub Kasius points out why innovation is badly needed in order to get current conventional storage techniques one generation further.

facility just makes sense if you take into account the full chain, the local farming skills, climate conditions and the product. We therefore participate in study group meetings with all stakeholders, investors included. Along the process, we debate the business model with the client, calculate cost of storage and the targeted sales and price.”

By: Steven Mahabier & Jeroen Boland

Changing mind-set and simplifying control “Since my assignment, I experience AgroVent, its branche competitors ánd the arable farming sector as traditional in their trade”, the company director continues. “In horticulture, preparedness to innovate and accept adaptations tends to be much higher. In arable farming storage, this has not yet taken place. People still buy technology developed twenty, thirty years ago.”

“Fresh air conditioning should not be overemphasized. It leads to a one in five probability of near or complete failure. This is mostly caused by weather conditions that prevent a decent drying process, leading to growth of fungi and bacteria. Climate change in our regions is making things worse.” Kasius continues: “Understandably, arable farmers have a profound anxiety of outbreak of storage-related disease. Condensation drying is the solution we advocate, but this demands investment in technology, storage innovation and knowledge.” At the end of the day, the one-off investment is no more than an insurance premium per ton storage capacity. Economically, this gives reason to invest in conditioned drying and cooling. The potato lives! Conditioned storage of live material is not some trick, but it is a process. “While stored, make your potato or onion go to sleep like a baby. Pamper it, keep it dry, comfortable and dark. It only needs to wake up when you open the storage gate. The potatoes cures small wounds and bruises, healed by temperature. Prevent fungi

growth by a quick drying treat. Thirdly, follow the ‘natural’ outside temperature. Make the potato feel they are in their original, natural genetic environment and season.” Kasius advises to keep these principles in mind when investing in a storage and operating it.

“Building client business models” New markets, new products The word is out on sweet potato. AgroVent wants to build its knowledge base, since storage technique and market demand are improving. Kasius: “Sweet potato in many respects behaves like potato. We try to gain specific knowledge on how to deal with sweet potato by developing a storage facility with clients. New applications for condensation drying technology already provided good results with other products, like garlic and pumpkins.” In semi-arid West-Africa, storage losses of up to forty percent still occur. This is one of the regions in need of extra food supply because of population growth. Kasius explains: “Putting in place a storage

Originally, technology-oriented storage control is being executed by control boxes. These are driven by complex software-based control storage algorithms. Developed by technically skilled engineers, aimed at technique-oriented farmers. “The flaw of these systems is their complexity,” Kasius explains. “These computers are designed for five varying systems and three different products, for all possible outside conditions. Whereas most outgrowers only need it for just one crop in one storage type. Storage control software can still be simplified and should be made easier to use”, he states in a firm conclusion.

HZPC

The colourful world of a multi functional potato company:

HZPC finds the answer to feed a growing world population

Who would have thought that a Northern Netherlandsbased company in the potato sector would claim to be innovative, sustainable and contribute to the development of responsible food for a growing world population, and proves to make that happen? Potato breeding, seed potato trade, and innovative product concept development company HZPC shows to be as good as its claims. In the words of its CEO Gerard Backx: “ it is all about being convinced that HZPC potatoes in colourful varieties can make the difference in the world.” By: Steven Mahabier & Janny Kok People outside the potato sector may think of the rather gloomy impression of Vincent Van Gogh’s first masterpiece The Potato Eaters. At the time, it must have been a tough world for peasants who slaved away for poor wages. That world has drastically changed. Today, it is all about being innovative in finding solutions for making the job of potato growing in bigger and bigger volumes easier, and also that of harvesting, storage, transportation and selling worldwide. That is how HZPC serves the target groups daily markets, retail fresh, French fries, organically grown food, crisps and convenience food. The latest innovations were launched by HZPC’s branch company Solentum. This innovator in technical solutions, such as dedicated sorting machines, launched the new app SolGrader for easy sample collecting of potatoes on the spot in the potato field. After

taking a picture of sample tubers with the use of a smart phone, the app ‘calculates’ what the current status of the field is. The app provides tuber size, tuber weight, average tuber length and estimated total yield and grade distribution. Digesting this, SolGrader savestime and consequently efforts for the grower. In the old way of doing, he would have to take the sample tubers to his shed, weigh and measure it there in order to find the size of the potato required. Another invention is SolAntenna that gives insight in the complete process from planting till storage. The four-sensor device reads data via a bluetooth connection on a smart phone. These are just two smart devices that support data interchange when needed. When the HZPC’s CEO talks about the out of the ordinary way of doing business, a quite unusual aspect emerge; the concern for

the shortage of food in developing countries. He is aware that critics may find this unusual for a commercial business, such as that of HZPC. “To us, it is absolutely realistic”, he says adding that all within the company are convinced that its potatoes can be the answer to the rising demand for food. Potatoes can be grown in a short period of time and with less water needed than rice and other foodstuffs. They also contain more important nutrients, vitamins, fibres and minerals. It is just a matter of finding the proper variety to flourish in a particular kind of soil and climate. For a variety of reasons, this message is hard to get across in the Far East and Central Africa and elsewhere in developing countries, but HZPC business partners, associates, and growers managed to do so. CEO Backx gives just an example: “We entered the market in China in 2002 and in India in 2008. It took years before noticing substantial successes,

but we could prove that one can grow and store potatoes under temperatures of 40 to even 50 Centigrade. It is a matter of growing and harvesting the potatoes in the proper season, prior to rice.” All involved the process at home and abroad can rely on the support of HZPC’s experts, when required. “It only takes no more than two days for us to get wherever our assistance is needed”, says Backx. That may happen in the countries worldwide where the HZPC’s branch companies are established. HZPC’s overall claim is this: “We deliver high-quality seed potatoes and professional cultivation guidance to increase yields under different growth conditions around the world. Our varieties can make a difference; they already feed millions of people around the world, every day. We aim at allowing everybody to grow and enjoy them.”

Sercom Control Technology

Control is our passion & we want you too! To conquer the world, that’s what Sercom wants. That’s how Jan-Willem Lut puts it. Lut is co-director of this market leading company in control technology in horti- and agriculture. “In Scandinavia seventy companies have already switched to the conservation systems of Sercom, it’s now time to catch the rest of the world!” By Anneke Raven Since its foundation in 1984, Sercom has played a major part amongst Dutch bulb growers. Other agriculture had to settle for working without Sercom’s control techniques. That was until they

were approached by Grimme from Scandinavia, a major actor in potato technology. “Preservation of flower bulbs is a form of top-class sports, you must be accurate to a tenth when it comes to temperature control. A potato doesn’t demand such accuracy, but as we started with flowers, you could say our technology is the Rolls Royce of the potato world. With all that precision, Sercom has, by now, proven to be an interesting partner for Grimme. Since their partnership which was established in 2013, seventy Scandinavian companies have already made the switch to Sercom’s control technology. The product sells itself The partnership with Grimme brings Sercom valuable knowledge: “Where we are market leaders in flower bulb storage, Grimme has a wealth of knowledge about potato cultivation,” says Lut. “The storage technique we have developed with Grimme for potatoes and onions sells it-

self.” According to Lut, this is to be found in several aspects. “The controller is very minimalistic, it only shows what’s needed. That makes it convenient in use for anyone. In addition, the computer is reliable and everything is adjustable. The end user has all control in its own hands. Sercom wants the world So, conquering the world is the next step Sercom wants to make with their control technology. “I am convinced that we will be able to do so if we have the right partners. We just need the right associates to sell the products. The controlling systems will do their job, independent from the circumstances. “Here again, knowledge from the world of the bulb is priceless: “With our control equipment you can now store anything: potatoes, onions and - of course, bulbs. More and more farmers grow several products and are active year-round here in the Netherlands, as well as elsewhere in the world. “ Sercom manages anything “By conquering the world, we aim to built bridges and gather knowledge from different worlds. Systems can therefore be extended to, for example, plant protection. When it comes to controlling, Sercom can manage anything. We are always looking for what is best for the product ánd for the user: energy-efficiently and cost-ef-

fectively speaking. “Energetically speaking, the Sercom systems can use the power of nature,” Lut says, “However, the choice of which energy to actually use is always made by the end user. Not unimportant either: “All systems are also manually operated. In case of - for example- lightning strikes, you can always intervene manually. “ Innovation Award Sercom thinks chances are fairly reasonable for them to win the Innovation Award, which PotatoEurope will again present this year. Sercom’s hopefully award-winning innovation is the Sustainable Storage Manager. “This controller is comprehensive and serves many disciplines.” With this sustainable manager, the grower has a lifetime warranty on the energy-efficient storage of his crops. It is lead-free and firmly built. And for this complex system also counts that the controller is completely designed according to the Scandinavian norm: without any fuss and adequately functional. With this innovation and place at PotatoEurope, Sercom wants to express their presence in the industry to further serve growers with a complete system, that is easy to use and of outstanding quality.

Tummers Food Processing Solutions

Thorough testing enables turn-key solutions Tummers Food Processing Solutions (FPS) are a family company and act as process innovator from field to customer. PE talks with Dustin Tummers, marketing manager. Based upon thorough knowledge in food processing, he combines marketing with a near-perfect knowledge of all process steps. On PotatoEurope, focus is on the ZicZac Brusher (ZZ) and the angulated washing drums as main innovations. Tummers ensures flawless functioning according to the specifications and capacity. The marketeer continues: “We transport our processing lines as modular machine, which have all been checked thoroughly before shipping. Cargo transport takes places in container ships to the destination country.”

By: Steven Mahabier & Jeroen Boland Since its inception in 1976, Tummers FPS has specialized in processing a range of tuber and potato. When markets emerged since the nineties, founder Fons Tummers visited over fifty countries. We quote Tummers Sr. ”Over the years, our market development has evolved ‘from tension to experience’. The latter generally leads to satisfactory results, but not always. Only afterwards one can determine whether we did the right thing under circumstances. Differences in culture, standards and values give a touch of lessons you need to learn in new markets. Overall, Tummers have been informed well on the relevance of differences and we learnt to adapt these into market chances.” Full processing lines Process phases, e.g. the washing lines, entail modules that have been put together optimally after a lot of research with clients in practice. “In general, our company is more directed toward food processing industries of tubers and other tuber crops and not specifically on the arable cultivation sector. Potato processing includes washing, peeling, separating and cleaning, slicing, cutting and drying. Our company covers all technical aspects and steps within these processes. Each and every line consists of several innovative

systems lined up and linked, according to client’s expectations and capacity demands.” Potato flakes bestsellers “Our potato flake lines can be regarded as a key in processing. Potato flakes have an outstanding maximum shelf life, stretching much further than storage periods of the biological potato. These characteristics enable further processing as a base ingredient for a vast range of food, non-food and industrial products. Potato flakes are available in continuous and standard quality, on planned time in specified quantities.”

“We hold a 10-year wishlist of designs “ Next to turn-key solutions in potato processing, the company tends to improve by innovation. “An outstanding example is the improved shape of washing drums. The classical round drum has been innovated to a an angular device. This enables a more intense process of self-washing of bulk produce.” Meanwhile, the majority of washers designed worldwide are angulated. All machines and combinations are carried over to the customer once full installation and testing in practice have been carried through.

Innovation is key “Branche developments are extremely fast and leading producers in our niche are few. We therefore all have to be competitive by innovation. This includes learning from one another’s and clients´ practical experiences in the market, drawing lessons from failures, and continuous strife for improvement”, the interviewee adds.

lower water demand competitor. This has been tested in practice as a mobile version. Finally, we closely follow the fried potato and chips market. It shows a huge increase and our company currently delivers complete lines for frying. These we want to intensify in years to come, delivering the full potato fries line in turn-key solutions.”

Booth B170

The marketeer distinguishes four primary innovation triggers. “We take into account flexibility in space, raising processing capacity, creating speed and - most important - mitigating product loss by smoother handling. The new brushes of the ZZ are an example of machinery combining these features. They have been tested thoroughly and successfully by a client for over a year and then successfully introduced to the market.” As regards future innovations, the company drafted a shortlist inventory of more than a dozen designs, to be accomplished within a time horizon of ten years. “Priorities are set, there is an urge but no hurry. We just aim to get these things done at the right time and in the place fit. Future market challenges are firstly, upgrading the bulk scale of processing. Secondly, the market moving geographically towards e.g. Asia, Middle-East, Southern Europe and Africa. In China, huge growth can be expected. Then there is the practical trend of mobile washing on harvest location with water circulation and far

Preface Nyfyto

Nefyto advocates scientific knowledge and fact-finding in policymaking:

Crop protection association takes environmental responsibility similar sister associations, European umbrella association ECPA and globally operating Crop Life International represent the crop protection industry in Europe and on other continents worldwide. The industry organisations encourage sustainable farming practices and the responsible use of crop protection technology, important for the sustainable intensification of agriculture.

DUTCH crop protection association Nefyto MD Maritza van Assen is in no doubt when it comes to sustainability and contribution to a healthy, high quality and affordable food supply for all involved: “However, there is a growing complexity in legislation about admission conditions for particular pesticides. It hampers developing the latest in active substances. Finding a new molecule, registration and introduction in the crop protection market may take about ten years.” By Anneke Raven It is no surprise that Nefyto’s internationally working members in the crop protection industry are hesitant to invest intensively in research and development of new, even more, environmentally friendly products for the European market; simply because European policymakers tend to add more and more rules and regulations for active substances the industry produces. “We fully accept legislation based on scientific research and designs to manage risks. As it is, we find demands and admission conditions and approval more and more politically based. Demands on complying with environmental rules have increased enormously. As

The branch organisations listen and learn from all stakeholders – the public at large and governmental bodies included – for a better understanding of each other’s

a rule, costs for the industry have risen substantially as well.” The Nefyto MD added that there is such thing as harmonisation in regulation and compliance in Europe, but that the interpretation of all that may vary. “The interpretation of a bird in an English habitat differs from its counterpart in Holland. On top of that, countries also have their specifical demands.”

interests and views. All is done for an improved sustainable agricultural productivity. As an ECPA statement on its website reads: “We deliver awareness raising and stewardship activities for the safe and sustainable use of pesticides in Europe, encouraging management practices that safeguard harvests, human health, and the environment. Discover our projects on farmer health, food safety and the protection of water and biodiversity at the ‘Stewardship’ section of this website.” Nefyto MD Maritza van Assen concludes: “Working together is better and solitary actions.”

There is no doubt about Nefyto’s code of conduct and that of umbrella organisation European Crop Protection Association (ECPA). They advocate a European political and regulatory environment that encourages efficient, innovative and sustainable farming, in which the crop protection industry’s positive contribution to society is recognised. Certis Europe B.V.

Our products in pipeline are key Tjaart Hofman is development manager at Certis Europe, whom PE interviewed on a range of topics. As a crop protection specialist with several decades of experience, he knows all about the stakes - and the risks.

By: Steven Mahabier & Jeroen Boland Hofman: “Certis works towards an integrated portfolio of chemical and biorational products - which are of natural origin - and formulations. This integrated approach is in our DNA. For example, we are a large producers of Bacillus thuringiensis, making us a global player in insecticidal bacteria applications. We also innovate in other products of microbial and plant origin for disease and insect control, of which we develop a broad package in European markets.”

we see significant opportunities for biorationals Certis wants to complement their main chemical products with biorational product solutions. Hofman: “For potato culture especially, this is a huge challenge. Disease pressure can be high and biorational products are not always as effec-

tive or stable in performance as the broad chemical package available. Nevertheless, next to our current chemical sprout inhibitors, we may welcome a sprout inhibitor of natural origin in 2020.” Various products in focus At PotatoEurope, Certis presents Crown MH (maleic hydrazide) which has now been re-approved on Annex I. It also co-organizes a seminar on the regulatory status of its potato sprout suppressor chlorpropham (Gro-Stop). As regards storage diseases, Certis updates on Diabolo (imazalil), since its residue tolerance in ware potatoes has been withdrawn. This change is due to new evaluation criteria, allowing insufficient room for maintaining the residue tolerance. “Regulatory studies and processes may re-establish an MRL for food and feed, but this demands a long procedure”, Hofman adds.

He notices several multinationals have reservations in approaching European markets in view of regulatory uncertainties. Nevertheless, Certis Europe develops new chemical solutions, mostly from Japanese origin. “On the other hand, European opportunities for biorational products are significant. Certis Europe focuses on an integrated portfolio of these solutions, together with new chemical products.” Exchanging with shareholders “At PotatoEurope, we will exchange with other firms on innovati-

ons and brainstorm with about new concepts. We expect to play a larger role in the market soon with several upcoming products for potato production”, highlights Hofman. “In this, we strongly appreciate the sense of innovation of our Japanese suppliers and shareholders. Well, overall I think, as medium size player in the European market, Certis’ greatest challenge is to introduce the large pipeline of new products. I think this gives many companies a reason to be envious.”

As a consequence of these hurdles to register pesticides in Europe, Hofman foresees the array of chemical product solutions will decrease significantly in future.

UPL Benelux B.V.

UPL Benelux - Market leader in crop protection of potatoes

‘We constantly want

to exceed expectations’ With the storage of potatoes coming up, Marcel van Doorne says the Tuberprop ULtra, which optimizes the conservation of potatoes, is most important for PotatoEurop visitors to hear about. It characterizes the service standard of UPL’s technical manager Van Doorne: to only advice the best is what drives him; the best results at as little cost as possible. By Anneke Raven Top of the bill is UPL’s Tuberprop ULtra. Due to the new formulation of this preservative, the product has obtained a most favorable environmental profile. It is user-friendly due to the renewed pouring method and the storage space remains considerably cleaner: “The equipment needs less cleaning and fans remain free from encrustation.” says Van Doorne.

berprop Basic and Easy, which are to be applied on the conveyor belt. “The varieties that can handle this, receive an overall treatment in this process.” Both are strong formulations, difference is to be found in the price: “The Basic must be diluted with water, which means higher labor intensity compared to the Easy.” Both the

agents leave little grease on the conveyor belts. Nautile and Video against Phytophthora and Alternaria “Phytophtora is a fungus that continuously mutates. However resistant varieties are being developed, fighting Phytophthora is in focus, especially in the Dutch humid climate. “Chemical protection is necessary, also against Alternaria. But the number of sprays can be drastically reduced with these agents,” says Van Doorne. Mancozeb is an important addition to these protection products. “Mancozeb has a low risk of resistance formation; a vital prerequisite in prevention.” Zeba; “Highly interesting plant enhancer” At PotatoEurope, UPL offers their visitors a sneak peek with the presentation of Zeba; “A

highly interesting plant enhancer,” says Van Doorne. “Zeba is a plant-based super water absorber. It captures 500x its weight of water and provides to the plant according to its needs during the growing season or during germination of the seed.” Van Doorne: “The potato is a stress-sensitive product. Environmental factors have great influence on the potato. Zeba makes a stronger crop and is therefore an attractive product for the Dutch breeding grounds, which vary widely in composition. Or consider for example emerging countries like China and India with their specific needs. “The formula is still optimized”, says Van Doorne. “At present, there are six demos in which the product is tested. We’re looking forward to tell about this at PotatoEurope.”

DuPont’s Zorvec Disease Control

Unmatched disease control; coming soon! Pierre Rougier, DuPont’s marketing specialist for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, looks forward to be present at PotatoEurope. DuPont will finally be able to present their new fungicide DuPont Zorvec® Disease Control to the European market. This promising disease control solution provides an unmatched combination of consistency and control of diseases caused by oomycete pathogens like Phytophtora infestans on potatoes. Launching Zorvec® will help Pierre in pursuing his mission; ‘to help growers to achieve better crop management, even under challenging conditions.’

By: Anneke Raven Zorvec® is a new active substance ‘Oxathiapiprolin’. The active has been approved in EU now and the first formulation Zorvec Enicade® was launched this year in Ireland, where it has been used by growers on potatoes. In the rest of Europe, registration is still ongoing and additional launches are expected in the coming season like in the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom. According to Pierre, Zorvec® is a blessing to growers looking to balance high yields and quality with optimizing farm and crop management.

Zorvec Enicade® Disease Control, what does it do? Zorvec has several exceptionally positive features on potatoes. It delivers three to four more days of disease control than the competition, even under high disease pressure. Zorvec Enicade® is rain fast in only twenty minutes, and it also protects the new plant growth due to its systemic movement to new and emerging leaves. “Results are astonishing and unmatched,” says Pierre. “It saves time, as you can spray less often and it allows flexibility when weather causes a delay in the application schedule “Zorvec Enicade® targets on the rapid

growth phase to keep the crop as clean as possible throughout the growing process by reducing early on the inoculum in the crop.” Zorvec Enicade® Disease Control, how does it work? “Zorvec Enicade® changes everything as it is an unmatched combination of consistency and control of potato late blight,” says Pierre. Zorvec Enicade® has an oil dispersion formulation (OD) and will be sold in a co-pack at first: “The active is very effective at very low dose rate per hectare, thus it needs to be applied with a robust

resistance management partner. DuPont supplies growers with the right partner in the co-pack to ensure the best sustainability of the active for growers.” Pierre states that Zorvec® has a favorable environmental profile. “It has very low toxicity to non-target organisms. “ Zorvec® Disease Control, the future “Zorvec® is built on truly game changing technology,” Pierre says. “From 2017 onwards this powerful disease control will be accessible for most growers in Europe and in the rest of the world. Our mission is for the growers to get the best yield and quality possible out of each crop.” To achieve that, DuPont seeks to communicate through trade fairs like PotatoEurope. “Besides Zorvec®, we will also show our other products that are interesting for the potato industry.” Zorvec® disease control, what to expect “We have a knowledge-transfer program, done by trainers directly in the field in different countries”. By being in the field and learning on site, DuPont’s team is able to address growers, advisors, processors and distributors questions regarding this new technology “In addition, the Zorvec® website is always freshly updated with news. It also shows virtual plot tours, which beautifully visualizes the benefits of using Zorvec Enicade®.” By communicating with their customers DuPont constantly keeps developing their products and knowledge on ultimate user programs. This way DuPont always seeks to fulfill any demand of all end users.

Belchim Crop Protection

As close to the farmer as can be PotatoEurope interviews Johan Desnouck, Head of International Marketing of Belchim Crop Protection, based in Belgium. Mr Desnouck is responsible for Belchim’s product range in potatoes and an expert in this crop. He explains us why and how Belchim is internationally expanding. By: Steven Mahabier & Jeroen Boland Belchim is a growing international company, specialized in distribution and development of plant protection products. It currently has a staff of nearly 500 people worldwide. “Our focus is on field staff, accounting for 75%, since they are in contact with the market and clients. We keep a limited number of people in our office staff, in this way we can be as close to the market and client as possible. In our vision the market and final user are the main suppliers of information, so that is where we want to be.” Global orientation Desnouck: “In 2001 we started our European development. Today we cover the whole of Europe and go beyond by acquisitions on the American continent and potential

growth in the East, even as far as Asia and Australia. This growth is necessary to cover the ever increasing costs of registration and development of active ingredients.” “We know how to rapidly initiate registration procedures in order to have new technical solutions ready”, continues Desnouck. A lot of new products are in the pipeline, but the registration process is time consuming. Besides potatoes, the company also invests in vines, corn, cereals and also in minor crops and label extensions. Full-spectrum field solutions for potato “Potatoes, as a crop, accounts for about one third of all admissions in our portfolio, vine being the runner-up. And then there is maize and some other big crops, where we are less present than the multinationals”, continues Desnouck.

“For potatoes, we hold a product portfolio from start to finish. This covers a full range of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and leaf desiccants with classic crackers like Ranman Top, Teppeki and Monarch. Products based on our own active ingredients: metobromuron, valifenalate and pelargonic acid are being developed for potatoes worldwide.”

“We want to respond to future legislation “ Belchim offers a selection of products (like Monarch, Symphonie) based on the active ingredient flutolanil for disinfecting seed potatoes before or during planting. The choice of product depends on the potato grower’s preference and equipment availability. Also in this segment the company will introduce new solutions. “Metobromuron in our herbicide product Proman is recent in the European market since 2015. It is the best herbicide choice in potatoes, even more since Linuron has been prohibited.” Furthermore, Belchim holds a full package of

fungicides against phytophthora and alternaria with products like Ranman Top, Narita and Valis M, which contains Belchim’s valifenalate. Beloukha – haulm killing the natural way On PotatoEurope, Belchim presents a real novelty, raising high expectations: a new product of natural origin for potato haulm killing, named Beloukha. “What makes this product completely different from other haulm killers, is the active ingredient pelargonic acid. This is being extracted from rapeseed or sunflower seed oil. In its product class, it excels by its very fast leaf burn-down. Beloukha is already available for Dutch and several other European potato growers.” Desnouck is happy with this new development: “The main reason for investing in this product is the ‘greening’ of our product portfolio. In this way we plan to be responsive on future legislation.”

EVERY POTATO DESERVES THE BEST PROTECTION Canvas® + mancozeb-containing product • Super strong tuber protection • Powerful leaf protection • Preventive effect on Alternaria species • Maximum yield nufarm.com/nl/canvas

Nufarm

Essential role for crop protection in growing demand for potatoes The potato popularity is growing exponentially, partly due to its relatively durable character. Compared to foods like rice and pasta, much less water is used and the yield per ha is much higher. As a result, the market for pesticides in the potato sector is rising and changing as well. Crop protection company Nufarm is closely monitoring these developments, says marketing manager Benelux Bart de Vroome, as crop protection plays an essential role in the worldwide growing demand for potatoes. By: Steven Mahabier & Ingrid van Batenburg Nufarm began selling pesticides in Melbourne in 1957 to help local farmers to protect their crops. The company grew and expanded over the years to the industrial and chemical sectors. Since 2000, Nufarm has specialized in crop protection and specialist seeds. The company is one of the top 10 largest crop protection companies, has production and sales locations on all contents and employs over 3400 people.

effect on alternaria. The agent was brought to market in 2012 and belongs to the Japanese Nissan. Nufarm has exclusive distribution rights in the Benelux, among other regions. Canvas is used with another agent, to prevent resistance. The

resistance to alternaria, among others, is growing. The advice therefore is to alternate both agents, preferably in a block of 6 sprayings. “Alternately using partners enables you to keep the active substance alive. As far as Nufarm is concerned, Canvas must be used with a mancozeb-containing agent. In that way, you help prevent alternaria as well.” Organic pesticides in potato sector Not only the ever-increasing potato areas are keeping Nufarm busy, high on the agenda of the company also is the increasing demand for biological means that help protecting their crops. “Farmers are looking at fitting these agents into their potato cultivation. Nufarm picked up these signals and is doing research on the means to accommodate our customers,” De Vroome explains.

The big players are increasingly interested in biological agents. Crop protection in the potato sector is still done chemically, but the signs toward sustainability are there: many sectors, including the potato sector, are moving towards biological agents. “The biological potential in potato cultivation is still in its infancy, but there are promising developments.” Nufarm is also looking at which biological means are suitable for exclusive distribution rights. “We will not develop the substance ourselves, so we are looking at the distribution for a third party. We already have some developments at an early stage.” Nufarm only looks at resources that can be alternated with chemical means in potato cultivation. De Vroome: “Chemicals are needed, you cannot do without in the potato sector.”

Increasing potato areas must remain protected Back to the potato. The potato areas are on the rise and that increasing amount of potato plants must remain protected to be able to keep feeding a growing population. Nufarm, which has a lot of experience in greenhouse horticulture and on grasslands, has a growing position in potato cultivation with Canvas. This fungicide has the active substance amisulbrom (discovered in 1999). Canvas fights phytophthora and has a side

Bayer CropScience SA-NV

Integrated cultivation for sustainable development Born as a farmer’s son, he is proud to be at leading charge of a beautiful farming project; the Bayer Forward Farm that arose in 2015 in Abbenes, the Netherlands. It is here where Joris Roskam, manager of Sustainable Agriculture, can shape his passion for pursuing more efficient and sustainable agriculture. “There are lot’s of incredibly interesting developments in the farming world and our knowledge continues to grow. At the Forward Farm we are intensively experimenting with increasing sustainability and serving the growers from around the world.” By: Anneke Raven “Integrated cultivation has my main interest,” says Roskam, “At the Forward Farm, we have a testing ground for experimenting and demonstrating the latest ideas and initiatives - in particular in respect of crop protection.” One of those things to experiment with is to make better use of the ecosystem services. Structuring the plot is just one of the ways to let nature do the job. Take for example the dam and diking technology: “After milling the potatoes, an Erosion-Stop creates thresholds between the ridges, which prevents water from running to the lower areas in the field in case of excessive rain. This reduces the risk of water pollution in these areas, leaving the potato rugs more hydrated.”

works together with partners such as Wageningen University, agricultural colleges and Nefyto. Also, the Forward Farm is visited year

activities Bayer gains valuable knowledge in all areas to continue to develop their (biological and chemical) products, services and advice on how to get most out of the fields and technologies used.

“It is our approach that makes us unique”

“More output, less input” “In short,” says Roskam, “the objective is to produce more with less input and impact.” It’s a comprehensive approach: emission reduction and less labor intensive, with better results for both human and environment. In the end it is up to the farmer to invest in sustainability. And that invest-

round by farmers, civil servants, food processors and supermarkets: everything comes together at the farm. Through all these

ment does not have to be high, says Roskam. “Bayer develops solutions for the bigger and the smaller companies.” Bayer invests globally in technological development, breeding technologies and development of both biological and chemical resources. “Because”, Roskam says: “Chemical crop protection, if properly applied, is safe for people and environment. Biologicals, products which origin from nature, are not necessarily low risk. Both need a dossier to be proven safe. At PotatoEurope Bayer wants to seize the opportunity to bring their products to the attention. Their demo shows a number of products that respond to a number of developments in the market. Special attention is paid to a new herbicide and a new biological plant protection product for the control of rhizoctonia. In addition, the application possibilities of the product Infinito are demonstrated.

Booth V320/F11/B120

“Together towards sustainable cultivation” Good quality, meeting emission standards and food safety are principles that are pursued by every grower. “Bayer focuses on sustainability to meet up with these ever developing standards,” says Roskam. He admits that they are not alone in saying this: “It is our approach that makes us unique: we experiment directly at our Forward Farm in Abbenes and are in continuous dialogue with the whole chain.” The Forward Farm
