Remember me
Landscape design reimaging farewell and death
A project presented to Faculty of Arts & Design, Architecture, Monash University Tutor: Darius Le
By Xinda Sui
CREMATORIUM / PARK “Remember Mereflects how we bid farewell and remember our deceased relatives. This project involved designing a crematorium and public park on the sewer of Brooklyn North in order to create a memory space.
Section The folly consists of an elevator that is set in the centre of the volume, lifting visitors from ground to top. The functioning crematory spaces are all concentrated in the middle of the tower
In response to the existing site, the folly designs to be transformed into a functional crematory.
Transformation

Making The most top room is a making room for people making the decedent bone ashes into a solid brick.
Body Storage
Condensing / Memory The bricks are then use to build up the structure by the deceased’s relatives, and in doing so aims to condense memory in this way.
The design offers two ways of reflecting memory; vertically through condensing memory and horizontally through releasing the memory.
Releasing / Memory For people feel relief and don’t want the bone ash to be transformed into bricks. These families could choose to scatter the bone ashes in the river.

There is only single access to platform and not enough seating and public space for people.

International students’ accommodation in Melbourne is a neglected problem. As the number of international students sustain growth each year, “student lodges” have become an effective accommodation approach. However, this housing mode has a potential negative impact on international students. Through investigating the typical student lodge-Uni Lodge D1, research reveals an environment that alienates students from one another and hinders their social interaction. International students are in urgent need of a new mode of living. This exegesis explores the potential challenges of living in a student lodge. “Hutong” is discussed as the main design approach, which is analysed to the optimised and cooperative relationship of neighbourhood and community. It is followed by exploring the possibility of imbuing the elements of Hutong into a student lodge. The project Co.liv.ing develops a new lodge model, as an spatial typology that allows an opportunity for not only living, but also for positive socializing for international students, which can strengthen their sense of belonging in a foreign country.
RESEARCH
QUESTION
Through critiquing the social barriers in student lodges, can spatial practice apply “Hutong principles to offer a more empathic accommodation approach for international students?
Site demography International Student Numbers (22140) Total Student Enrolments (52257)
Uni lodge D1 Site was chosen in response to the needs of the international student demographic - Uni lodge D1. In terms of geographical location, the site is located between the University of Melbourne and RMIT University.
International Student Numbers (26590) Total Student Enrolments (57433)
Uni lodge D1 is an eight-storey building. The common areas are located on the ground floor and first floor, the other floors are individual accommodation units, which combine the functions of sleeping, eating, cooking, bathing, living and study. Each floor is connected by an elevator and staircase in the middle of lodge.
Figure 3.2 Perspective section reflecting the alienation between students living in Uni lodge D1
CORRIDOR ELEVATOR & STAIR
According to the investigation, living in a single room in Uni lodge D1 can easily hinder students’ social interactions through isolation between students from the same floor and other floors. It is difficult to interact with neighbours. There is a strong sense of loneliness for students staying in one of the small bedrooms. As a consequence, most of them spend limited time at the lodge and go out for social activities.

Hutong
čƒĄ ĺ?Œ
Hutong represents the traditional Beijing life style of housing. The hutong are narrow low-rise alleyways. The width of a Hutong alley can only admit a small car. On both sides of the street are low-rise housing, typically containing an integrated mixture of residential and commercial buildings, which are normally single-storey brick houses.
From my personal experience living in hutong, I always see my neighbours not restricted to their own houses, but on the streets of Hutong, and all these activities happen in the hutong precinct, not their house. The hutong residents consider the entire hutong space as the extension of their home. This sharing community mode creates a pleasant living atmosphere and there is a strong sense of belonging for the residents living in Hutong.
In Hutong, the functionality of the interior of homes is usually extended onto the exterior. Inside and outside boundaries are blurry. Benches and chairs, sofas and tables, places for drying clothes, chopping boards, cooktops, ornamental plants, lockers, fitness equipment, bird cages, even washing machines, can be out on the street. These life elements, which should have belonged to the family’s interior, are on the street of the hutong for the neighbours to share.

The form of the central public area is transformed from the basic stair geometry, is gradually transformed to various forms which people can inhabit. Then transformed again by extending and retracting the form for condensing to a central space, to form a functionality of transition and circulation.
Figure 8.1 Elevation1:100
Design Summary In the concept of Co.liv.ing, students’ available shared space is multiplied by using the physical elements of the transition from floor to floor, by promoting the staircase into a series of planes that are multiuse. Soft space encourages students to use their participation to utilise the space flexibly and create diverse activities. Both the hard and soft spaces promotes social interaction for international students. The sense of belonging of international students lies in the housing that can support all these social activities. Even though international students are only temporarily residents for a few years. In Co.liv.ing, they can find their own sense of belonging in a foreign country.
