Healing Cities

TRANSFRMING ‘SICK CITIES’ TO LANDSCAPES OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS

HEALTHSCAPE SUMMIT, DUBAI, DECEMBER 2016 STEVEN VELEGRINIS, ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, PERKINS+WILL DUBAI

SICK CITIES – WHY DO THEY HAPPEN?

“The city is no longer something we can understand as architecture, as a mass of formed material that we can distinguish from a non-material void which can be characterised as countryside or periphery – or as in any event ‘not-city’….we have unleashed a creature of its own volition – an order of another nature constructing its own form” Stephen Read

“The prevailing conventions of design practice have demonstrated a limited capacity both to respond to the scale of the ecological crisis and adapt their established ways of thinking. In this context, ecological urbanism can be seen as a means of providing a set of sensibilities and practices that can help enhance our approaches to urban development‌.a crossdisciplinary and collaborative approach toward urbanism developed through the lens of ecologyâ€? Mohsen Mostafavi

MASTERPLANNING CONCEPTS SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY Sustainable & Healthy

- Exemplary Sustainable Performance - Net Zero Energy through on-site renewables - Employ a range of strategies (WELL, FitWel, LBC) - Outdoor Thermal Comfort to extend street life

INTERIOR DESIGN APPROACH AND SUSTAINABILITY

APPROACH TO INTERIOR DESIGN Our Principles

- Wellness is embedded - Seamless connection between inside and outside - Use of natural materials inside and out - Views of Nature emphasised

The Kids Kitchen A themed eatery where children harvest the food they eat

Medical Clinics Reception Area An emphasis on indoor/outdoor connections

Medical Clinics Waiting Area People waiting in the clinic are connected to the outside

Wellness District Fitness Centre Visually and physically connected to the ground encouraging activity to spill outside the gym

The Spa Experience Both Connected and Serene with strong connections to the garden

Seamlessness between inside and out An approach to both interiors and exteriors

SUSTAINABILITY AND INTERIOR DESIGN

Our experience – WELL Building Standard

- We helped write the WELL Building Standard - 7 certified projects in the USA including WELL Platinum Certification of the ASID HQ in Boston - WELL has significant cost implications - Some dubious requirements

SUSTAINABILITY AND INTERIOR DESIGN Our experience - FitWel

- We have also contributed to Fitwel (Launched on May 19th 2016) - Perkins+Will have certified several pilot projects in Fitwel - Substantially more cost effective - A functional program-based alternative to systems such as LEED and WELL

MASTERPLANNING CONCEPTS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Strategy

• Create a major green space • Food Production and productive plant cultivation • Design and create community gardens • Green Roof to reduce thermal load on buildings • Outdoor thermal comfort strategies

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Landscape Infrastructure Strategy

The landscape of DWD will be healthy and biologically active including : • Water Recycling system (grey water, AC Condensate and Stormwater) • Active Landscape systems for Water, Energy & Material recycling • Incorporation of Solar & renewable energy in the landscape • Green wall systems indoors and outdoors

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Tree Planting Strategy

The Tree Planting Strategy will include the planting of over 1000 trees all of whom are either Medicinal, Fruiting or Fragrant in nature.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Green Roofs and Vegetated Surfaces Simple, low maintenance tray systems will be used for green roofs and vegetated surfaces. This will have a significant impact in the mitigation of heat island effect and will also allow for planted sky walks.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Wayfinding in the Landscape

Bold colored pathways as a wayfinding system. Each colored loop will lead to different locations Create different sized loops for variety for exercise choices

If we will eliminate the environments that promote poor health the symptoms go away.
