2
Seven little pythons, late one day,
slipped from their eggshells and slithered away.
3
“Ssss,” hissed the first snake. “Well, lucky me!
4
Is that my dinner I see in that tree?
5
6
“Ssss, hissed the second snake, tasting the air.
“Is that my dinner I see over there?”
7
8
“Ssss,” hissed the third snake. “Yum, yum, yum.
Look out dinner, here I come.
9
“Ssss,” hissed the fourth snake. “It’s time for some tea.
10
Is that my dinner waiting for me?
11
12
“Ssss,” hissed the fifth snake. “Well, that looks nice.
I’ll make a meal of two little mice.”
13
“Ssss,” hissed the sixth snake, looking around.
14
“I’ll catch my dinner without a sound.”
15
“Ssss, hissed the seventh snake, peering up a tree.
16
“Those baby birds are food for me.”
17
What seven snakes missed were six greedy eyes,
18
staring down from the trees with delighted surprise.
19
20
“Ha,” laughed the kookaburras. “Oh, yippee!
Snakes make the perfect supper for three!
21
“Ssss,” hissed the snakes. “Now we’d better go.
22
We don’t want to be dinner ourselves, you know. 23
So they slipped behind a rock, hidden away. Perhaps they’d try hunting another day.
