Ideology exchange commune A supportive shelter
A supportive shelter Ideology exchange commune
Brief Ideology exchange is an abstract concept and it varies a lot depending on the particular subject nature. students would choose from the three selected areas, Yau Ma Tei, Lamma Island and Yuen Long, in Hong Kong to study in-depth in terms of the urban fabric and community dynamics. Students are asked to propose an Ideology Exchange Commune with specific programme in response to a particular phenomenon or urban research interest which can serve the community as well. This can bring the abstract concept of ideology exchange to the highly community-grounded architecture.

The situation of Yau Ma Tei Street sleepers is to chose to sleep on the street rather than homeless shelter. This is a strange phenomenon that out of our expectation. After visiting and interviewing the site, I reveal that the living condition and environment of Yau Ma Tei shelter is bad and terrible. Back to basic, the exciting shelter is just to cure the symptoms, not the disease. The operation and the idea of the shelter cannot help the homeless back to the track of the society. In order to effectively help the homeless work with the society, supportive shelter is running the idea of exchanging living place with your working force. Shelter would provide the living place, education and job opportunities for half year so the inhabitants would not worry to find their jobs with or without working skills.

the market strip are inserted in between different privacy o fthe blocks
There are 4 layers of this supportive shelter, they are public area, dwelling area, workshop and market. In order to create the warm coming home feeling, the timber is the theme of composing the building blocks in public area. On the other hand, the spatial setting of the dwelling strip is designed according to different stages of inhabitants by their mental condition. The workshops are plugged in between the public strip and dwelling strip in order to separate the circulation of public and private. When public can see the activists of the workshop while they were traveling the public programs however, they cannot access. In opposite, the inhabitants can pass through different workshops before arriving their own resting area. Finally, so as to remind the public the existing of the shop built in between the alley of the tenements, the market is inserting into different building blocks. Also, the market strip can attract the public experience different building blocks.

Brief The studio’s primary goal is to learn more about the extremely rich and eventful urban life in familiar neighorboods of Hong Kong. At the same time we will reflect and study the topics of high-density urban areas and building design, while considering the urgent need to provide high quality standards of urban and domestic environments to the local community. Brief This is a design competition specifically set up by Halo Creative Design Limited and for the module Expanded Studies 6: Competition Design. The aim of this competition is to design a modular living unit of about 20 - 30 square metre that can be a plug-in module to a modular building as well as a standalone architecture.
The module must include a twin sleeping zone, and a wet area. The function of the unit could be a studio, home office, serviced apartment, hotel room, etc. Although the competition is not set in a specific location, students should give a contextual background to their design. Prize Students competed for a unique prize, the winning design would be built in 1 to 1, constructed by Timothy Oulton’s master craftsmen.
100mm X 100mm plank are used as primary structure shorter elements are then inserted to create furniture, pattern and space

Vertical shopping street tower
Vertical shopping street tower
Brief What housing towers appear when public program are integrated? What vertical organization is needed? What living qualities can then be discovered? Does such a vertically mixed tower bring a desirable diversity to the HK housing market? What kind of vertical communities could emerge? What values? And what typologies? What new concepts of living can we think of? What new lifestyles could then emerge? This studio explores the potentials of mixed-use housing towers. It aims at designing innovative mixed-use towers that unfold and expose new high dense living strategies, its advantages, disadvantages and spatial qualities.

Making the hand dirty
Vault study
Vault study
Brief The aim of the project is “Making the hand dirty”. For me, learning architecture is not only making the card board model and foam model, it is also about constructing 1 to 1 scale. How to join the material together and how the structure is. What is materials replace the glue in real life. In one day, I have watched a youtube video “ Vault Structure Test” which is about some of the students was testing the vault structure. They tried to walk on the vault and tested will the vault collapse. It is very interesting for me that the vault was made by thin red bricks, but it can be stand by 4 to 5 people. So that, we tried by ourselves
Mortar Preparation
We brought from Kwun Tong Hardware store. We moved the sand and cement by a handcart. Cement +
Sand
Brick Preparation
Water
We brought from Mong Kok building material store in Reclamation Street. We chose the thin but not the thick bricks because they are more suitable as we gonna do a small scale vault, 0.8m to to 0.8m. CUTTING BRICKS As the length of the bricks is too long, it's too long for being put together to form an arch in 0.8 meter diameter. We had to cut them into around 6x6cm each.
Fixing the Vault
24
Making the hand dirty
At first, we tired to put masking tape between to hold the bricks. Then we started with sticking triangular bricks on the arch. Afterward, we started to place rectangular bricks at a corner between two arches. We also apply mortar on the whole surface of the layer of bricks. We were putting some bricks benneath to support the bricks for the vault construction.
