EDWIR
l'ARDERAR
A CALM PRESENCE behind his defenders, Edwin Van der Sar was already 34 when he joined United in 2005, but with no fitness problems, his experience is a real asset. His career began at Ajax where he won both the UEFA Cup and the Champions League in the early nineties. He played for Juventus and Fulham before arriving at United. lncredibly he kept 24 clean sheets in all

DEI/ILLE
TOUGH, COMMITTED AND INTELLIGENT, Gary is one of a select band to have captained Uniled to the Premier League title. The ultimate one-club pro, Gary was part of the Fergie's Fledglings generation which included David Beckham, Nicky Bult, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Allhough he has suffered badly with injury in the last two seasons, his cast-iron will to win and presence around the club are always an inspiration.
PATRICE
El'RA
PATRICE GREW UP in the same tough part of Paris as Thierry Henry and the similarities between the two don't end there. Like the former Arsenal star, he is blessed with explosive speed, which he uses to devastating effect when joining in United's raids down the wing. He started his career in ltaly, before joining Nice and then Monaco, where he was club captain and played in the 2004 Champions League Final.
DWER
HARliREAl'E.19
BORN IN CANADA, OWEN IS VERY BRITISH in his style of play. The former Bayern Munich man is an expert defensive midfielder who can also operate at right back. Although he describes himself as a ball-winning midfielder who keeps il simple, !here is much more to this England international's game, as his match-winning free kick against Arsenal proved. He has won the Champions League with bath Bayern Munich, and United.
RIO
FERDlnAnD
FROM A FAMOUS FOOTBALL FAMILY with cousin Les and younger brother Anton bath professional footballers, lhis elegant defender was a BO million signing from Leeds in 2002. He has captained bath England and Manchester United, notably skippering the Red Devils to !heir Champions League win over Chelsea in 2008. Able to pop up with the occasional crucial goal, he is brilliant at bath reading the play and leading the team.
WE
BROll'D
.A GREAT ALL-ROUND DEFENDER and a product of the Red Devils' youth policy, Wes has been described as "without question, the best natural defender this club has had for years," by Sir Alex Fèrguson. In spite of injury problems, Wes has become a key part of the United back tour and a regular in the England set-up. Good in the air, quick and tough-tackling, he can play at right back or in central defence.
CRlTIARD
RODALDO
POSSIBLY THE WORLD'S GREATEST player, Cristiano has developed from being the tricky winger signed trom Sporting Lisbon in 2003 into a truly awesome attacking force. His dribbling seems to have become even more dazzling, while his 42 goals last season made him the leading scorer in Europe. There is no better sight tor Red Devils fans than when he is running with the ball - and no worse sight tor defenders!

DIMITAR IS ONE of the cleverest players in the Premier League. Blessed wilh amazing control, great vision and a goalscorer's instinct, he has added a new dimension to Uniled's play. Now Bulgaria's captain, he began his career with CSKA Sofia, moving on to Bayer Leverkusen, before winning the Carling Cup last season wilh Spurs. Perhaps the greatest compliment to him is !hal he has been compared with the legendary Eric Cantona.
WAYRE
ROODEY
, IN 2004 WAYNE EXPLODED onto the Old Trafford stage. In his first game against Turkish side, Fenerbahce, the world's most expensive teenager scored a hat-trick to give him an instant place in United hearts. The former Everton hero and current England star has been described by Sir Alex Ferguson as "the best young player I have seen in my time". With 18 goals last season he continues to excite with his shooting and clever link-up play.
RYAn
lïllïlïS
RYAN GIGGS' WONDER GOAL against Arsenal in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final will linger long in the memory. Mazy dribbling at speed and expert wing play have always marked Ryan out as something special, but as he approaches the veteran stage of his career, he has added a more mature, passing style to his game. With 20 medals, he is the most decorated player in the club's history and holds the record lor number of appearances.

PARK
JI-SUNG PARK IS THE FIRST KOREAN to play for a club of Ûnited's size. He is known for his stamina, both in training and matches. He just never stops running! lt was estimated that he ran nearly 12km in last season's Champions League semi·final against Barcelona. Taken from Japan to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven by Guus Hiddink, this all·action midfielder signed lor the Red Devils for a reported E4 million in 2004.

A ROCK AT THE HEART of the United defence, Nemanja's partnership with Rio Ferdinand has been centra! to United's success. His tough, direct style acts as the perfect fait for his more laid-back team-mate. He began his career with Red Star Belgrade who he led to a cup and league double, before departing for Spartak Moscow. A mere 39 games later and he was on his way to Old Trafford, signing for the Red Devils in late 2005.

CARRICK
ALWAYS A CLASSY, COMPOSED midfielder, since joining
the Red Devils, Michael has been encouraged by Sir Alex to push forward and get his name on the scoresheet more of ten. He was part of the talented West Ham team that included both Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe, before moving to Tottenham in 2004. A superb ball player, England international Michael recently signed a new contract to keep him at Old Trafford until 2012.
nAn1
FAMED FOR HIS AMAZING back flip goal celebration, Nani has a blend of speed and skills that has seen him compared with Cristiano Ronaldo. Already a Portuguese international, he plays mainly on the lelt side, but can also operate in a variety of attacking positions and has produced a number of stunning goals. So vast is his potential that the Portugal assistant coach has tipped him to become one of the best players in the world.
f RED DEI/IL
ULTlfflATE LEliEBD A superb all·round defender, club captain Gary is tactically brilliant, a natura! leader and courageous in the tackle. A rock at right back he formed an almost telepathie partnership with David Beckham in the nineties. At the club for his entire career, Gary is · Mr Manchester United.
lf you heard the commentator scream "The Dane makes himself big" in the nineties, you knew exactly whom he was talking about! A giant presence, his defenders knew who was boss too. Peter was an amazing shot stopper and at only f:550,000 from Bnmdby, he was a snip.
Could Duncan Edwards have been the greatest ever? The fact that he was rated more highly than George Best or Sir Bobby Charlton says it all. He was, in Sir Matt Busby's words, "the complete footballer". The world was robbed of this brilliant Busby Babe after the Munich air crash of 1958.
How Steve Bruce never got a full England cap remains one of football's greatest mysteries. As hard as a rock, he possessed tactical nouse, courage and composure on the ball. With Gary Pallister he was one half of a formidable partnership at the heart of the Red Devils' backline.
This understated, efficient lrishman made the left back berth his own. Signed from 0ldham for f:625,000 in 1990, Denis was the type of player you could set your watch by. Blessed with a mighty throw·in, he could take a mean free kick and was coolness itself from the penalty spot.
What more can anyone say about Besty? He was spotted playing in Belfast by United scout Bob Bishop, who told Matt Busby: "Boss, 1 think l've found you a genius." George became the greatest ever UK player. Fameus for his lifestyle, what set him apart was his breathtaking ability on the pitch.
How could we leave players like David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bryan Robson out of our Ultimate Legends team, you may well ask? Even Sir Alex misses out on the manager slot! But we're sure he'II understand! lt just shows the talent that has graced Old Trafford - and after all we can only have one player per position! Enjoy our Ultimate Legends, even if you don't agree with them all! Just don't teil Sir Alex!

Groomed under Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest, Roy arrived at Old Trafford in 1993 as a box to-box midfielder bursting with passion and drive. He became, in the words of Sir Alex Fe(-guson, "the best midfield player in the world of his generation" and you don't get higher praise than that!
A classy attacking · midfielder with a thunderbolt shot, Sir Bobby was a key part of England's World Cup winning team in 1966. His finest moment at club level carne when he captained United to European Cup victory in 1968. He is now a real ambassador for the club.
lt's been called the steal of the century! When Sir Alex Ferguson signed this mercurial Frenchman for a mere f1.2 million, few could have predicted that this graceful, intelligent and often controversial deep-lying striker would turn into one of United's greatest players of all time.
From the shy 17-year-old who had to be protected from media intrusion, this wing wizard has thrilled the United faithful and terrified opposing full backs with his trickery at pace for seasons. Now in the twilight of his career, he remains a lethal weapon in United's armoury.
Denis was United's fox in the box. He was a natura! goalscorer with an eye for both spectacular and cheeky goals. He played for Manchester City too, but his·contribution to United means the man they called "The King" is sufficiently forgiven to make it into the United team of legends.
To oust Sir Alex Ferguson from the managerial hot seat takes some doing, but Sir Matt is the only man who could do it. As the manager who revived the club's post-war fortunes, gave his name to the Busby Babes and then took the club to European glory in 1968, this strict Scotsman just couldn't be left out.
PAUL
SCHDLES
, WITH PINPOINT PASSING, OUTSTANDING SHOOTING
and volleying, Paul is close to being the dream creative midfielder. So great are his talents that Sir Bobby Charlton called him, "a beautiful player to watch". Former England international Paul emerged at Old Trafford in the mid nineties with other talented "kids" like David Beckham and Ryan Giggs and has since gained a clutch of honours including two Champions League winner's medals.

versatile players. He is a good passer and his all-round ability has been a crucial pari' of the Red Devils' success. Sir Alex once remarked: "I could play John anywhere," and this has proved to be true with John even stepping in between the sticks at Spurs and playing up front against Reading last season. With a new contract signed, the underrated lrishman will play a big part in United's future. JONNY'S BOYHOOD HERO was former United great Roy
Keane. So il must have been pleasing to this powerful, yet stylish defender that he has enjoyed loan spells with his idol at the Stadium of Light in the last two seasons. Northern lreland star Jonny has also gained experience at Belgian outfit, Royal Antwerp, in 2006. Although competition is fierce, the young stopper will be looking for more first-team appearances this season.

DARREN ISA MIDFIELDER with a bil of everything: a real box-to-box player who can score goals, set up atlacks and win the ball. A trainee wilh the club since 2000, he already has two Premier League litles to his name. In 2004 at the age of 20 he became Scotland's youngest captain lor 118 years. This season he will again face competition for midfield places, bul Sir Alex knows he can rely on his ballling fellow Scot whalever the challenge.

Old Trafford fans, saving an Arsenal penalty on your debut as îomasz did, is a great way to do it. But United didn't need reminding of his ability having watched him impress lor West Brom at Old Trafford in 2005. In United's double winning year of 2007-08, Tomasz made 16 appearances " and kept eight clean sheets. Keeping fit and focused, he is ready to step into the fray whenever required.
CARLOďż˝

HAVING CAPTAINED CORINTHIANS, played tor Boca Juniors as well as scoring eight goals to help Argenlina win gold at the 0lympics in 2004, Carlos is a legend in South America. However he had a slow start alter joining West Ham in 2006, taking 19 matches to find the net. Since his transfer to United, he has struck up a great partnership with Wayne Rooney and is also scoring regularly. He's now becoming a bil of a Uniled legend!
