SOUND OF JUNK MUSEUM AND LEARNING CENTRE OF DHARAVI ROCKS

SEM 10

PROJECT BRIEF The idea was to study how music can be produced from waste materials and to provide a space for the low-income groups in Dharavi for them to showcase their talent. Museum is designed in order to conserve and promote reusing of junk with respect to different styles of music to create awareness for the future generations. The design approach for museum will be different from other display museums, which will accommodate an interactive exhibit area which will generate joy and happiness among users and also a space where people can learn to make musical instruments from recyclable waste materials and also to generate music from it. Location: Dharavi, Mumbai Area: 10,400 SQM

Subject: Design Dissertation Professor: Ar. Sarojini Lahot Work Type: Individual Year Completed: 2022

Better standard of living

Why Mumbai? The city of Mumbai generates around 10,000 tons of waste per day. Over 80% of waste is collected, sorted, recycled, and recovered, with over 300,000 rag-pickers feeding grassroots, small-scale recycling businesses as part of the city’s waste management system. Every day, almost 4000 tons of plastic and other recyclables come in Dharavi to be processed and treated. Why Dharavi? Dharavi is the largest slum in India and the second largest in Asia. It is located in the heart of Mumbai. Dharavi employs 250,000 individuals based for recycling and processing Mumbai’s waste, with 15,000 factories dedicated to the task. Within Dharavi, an amazing recycling machine without which Mumbai would strangle in its piled-up trash, 80% of Mumbai’s solid waste is recycled and given new life. Dharavi recycles 60 percent of Mumbai’s plastic waste. The plastic recycling sector in Dharavi alone employs between 10,000 and 12,000 people.

PUBLIC LIBRARY AND ADDITIONAL PROGRAMME SEM 6 PROJECT BRIEF The goal of the project was to understand a city’s multilayered programmatic and architectural complexity. To respond to a built architectural language according to the surrounding urban context. The idea behind the library was to design a structure that would be related to the neighborhood’s pre-existing architectural style while also standing out and resembling a significant landmark in the area. Location: Dadar, Mumbai Area: 2400 SQM

GROUND FLOOR PLAN • The site is designed up so that there are two ways to access it: one is from the main road, and the other is through a side pathway. • A large ramp at the entrance of the building leads to the first floor, which is the learning centre. • As we enter the main lobby, we find an elevator and a staircase leading to the upper levels. In addition, we can see an underground art exhibition from the main lobby, which is located next to the main lobby. 16

DESIGN DEVELOPEMENT

Providing different levels for different activities and segregating them vertically.

Shifting floor plates to create a large interactive space.

A big double-height space is created by leaving a space between the floor plates, and a ramp is positioned between the structure.

A cafe and daycare centre have been introduced which are positioned apart from the main building and connected by a passage.

The strucutre has been designed according to the climatic aspect , by considering harsh sunlight and wind.

Creating voids between the structure makes an interactive space vertically and horizontally and creating green space so there is a co-relation between the built form and nature.

Aim was to make the space Interactive and Interesting

• Indicating different activities at different floor levels. • Shifted floor plates creates a double height space which turns into an interesting interactive space. • The floors are shifted in such a way that the above three floors being a single space do not disturb the below three floors. • Art exhibition being in underground creates a soothing environment within it.

• Openings has been provided in the south- west and north- east directions. • Harsh sunlight is from south so louver has been provided for diffuse sunlight. • Reading space has been provided in the double height space and book shelves has been provide where shadow is formed.

KUM-ART-ULI CENTRE EXBITION AND WORKSHOP

SEM 4

PROJECT BRIEF The design aim was to study and analyze the community patterns of a kumartuli community in detail and then cater them with proper infrastructural needs to the community so that their would be platform for them to earn and expose their distinct art to the tourism and also for long term preservation. Other basic aim was to understand the contextual architecture which responds to the context and its spatial arrangement from the heritage architecture around it. Kumartuli

Architecture Design Portfolio 2017-2022

Proposed Site

The site is located in kumartuli, north kolkata along the Hooghly river. Kumartuli is rich in its culture and in its tradition. It has a clustered housing system. Kumartuli has narrow lanes. The lanes of Kumartuli are filled with artisans and workers making durga idols, so the visitors can see the process of making idols. The design process of art center starts with an idea of following the clustered organization pattern same as the housing pattern of Kumartuli which is clustered form. The building construction material used in the structure are locally available such the thached roof, clay tiles for roofing. Exposed bricks has been used for the wall construction. These all aspects reflects the context and the vernacular architecture of kumartuli. So one can experience the vibe of the tradition of kolkata.

The exhibition follows the principle of symmetry. The exhibition is designed in such a way that the circulation is forcefully made through the given path. The cafe is located at the centre in order to create a nice interactive space from different sides of the structure. Looking at the architectural style of kolkata there are features like courtyard, arches, jalli railing, Louvered window, construction material and its technique. All of these feature come together to articulate the space.

TENSILE STRUCTURE AND FOLDED PLATES ROOF

SEM 8

PROJECT BRIEF The exercise was an effort to understand the idea of long span structural systems in order to fully understand the behaviour of structures and the relationship between form and material. Secondly, the project showed how to use the tension and compression principles to create structural shape from the behavioural link between flexible and rigid material. The ultimate aim was to develop attention toward material size and form in relation to the selected structural principles. Project 1 Area: 1700 SQM Project 2 Area: 200 SQM Subject: Building Construction Technology Professor: Ar. Smita Dalvi Work Type: Group and Individual Year Completed: 2021

TENSILE STRUCTURE Aim: To Design a semi-open space for an outdoor food-court within a sports complex using a tensile roof system. Dimension: 23 M Radius Area: 1700 Sqm What is Tensile Structure? Tensile structure is the term usually used to refer to the construction of roofs using a membrane held in place on steel cables. Their main characteristics are the way in which they work under stress tensile, their ease of pre-fabrication, their ability to cover large spans, and their malleability.

Concept

The concept for tensile structure is inspired from the shape of a leaf, wherein two leaf form is faced opposite to each other. One of these forms are then shifted vertically creating a buffer space for entry and exit.

Types of Tensile Strucutre It is a combination of saddle and arch-supported tensile roof

SITE WORK INTRODUCTION In addition to my studies, I had the opportunity to work as a freelance architect on a project for an educational and diagnostic centre. In both projects I learned and implemented some creative design ideas which has helped me develop as an architect.

Subject: Freelance Architect Work Type: Group Year Completed: 2020 & 2022

St. Gregorious Public School, Mulund(w) Redesigning and Renovating Before the entire toilet and classrom space was a combined toillet for boys and girls. The client needed an extra classroom that can intake 25 students in it. So redesigning the whole space and to create two different spaces that is a toilet space and a classroom space.

Boys and Girls Toilet

The main task was to create a proper toilet space for the users at a very small space and also redesigning classroom and other spaces such as teachers room, principal offfice, corridor and computer room at a certain period of time and budget.

Corridor (Before)

Corridor (After)

Huge cupboards utilize more space in the corridor, in order to overcome the problem cabinets were created below the sitting platform. Therefore maximizing the storage and more circulation space.

44

Architecture Design Portfolio 2017-2022

Classroom

The client needed a white board and black board at the same side. so created a rotating black board which can be used as per their needs.

The client needed this room as a computer lab with maximum computers placed in it and also acting as a conference room. So designing a oval shape table where the curve ends are foldable act as a computer table as well as a conference table. At school hours the curve end can be folded for smooth circulation.
