Jackson’s abstracted environments depict a natural world in transformation and unrest. Jackson’s sensitive and intuitive handling of paint ultimately reveals a rich and elaborate terrain; an elemental surface of multiple readings. Jackson’s practice of application and elimination of bold marks of manipulated oil & ink based media, contribute to the works exceptional d e p t h a n d v i s u a l c o m plexity, enabling process and histor y to disclose infinite interpretations. My work interfaces along a continuum of painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Color and materiality are paramount. Inspired by obser vations of the manner in which light affects color with its passing movement and changes I am fascinated by the power of color to evoke emotion and to encourage contemplation, allowing the viewer to become the subject of the work. In my daily studio practice I attempt to strike a balance between painterly guts and the pared down elegance of formalism. The inherent tension between these two elements is filled with myster y and metaphor, challenging me to create works which have a sense of inevitability about them and which reveal a sense of oneness with the viewer.

HENRY JACKSON ROBERT GAMBLIN

T H E G R E AT AWA K E N I N G V I D E O C O L L A B O R AT I O N

In May of 2019, painting artists Henry Jackson and Robert Gamblin, along with hired cinematographer David Magnusson, descended into the Costa Rican rain-forests. Eight years prior, Jackson presented a project concept to Gamblin that would require them to step out of their oil-based comfort zone, and reinterpret the natural by substituting their long-standing passion for paint for video & software technology. Their video titled, “The Great Awakening”, depicts an alt-nature; a reinterpreting of what one might see and experience in a heightened state of reverie within the confines of a rain-forest. The video also serves as a cautionary tale, introducing an environment that entices and distracts from the tangible. A meta-verse to replace and satisfy what could eventually become the new elemental norm, dictated by false saviors. A visual seduction that diverts our attention from the travesties of consumption and greed. NFT Project Collaboration: Jackson and Gamblin, along with Stewart Gallery, will curate video segments from “The Great Awakening”, that will be accompanied by a special artist’s edition of unique 20” x 20” works on paper. A custom printing of ten select video stills are then built-up by the artist’s intuitive mark-making, using the digital imagery as catalyst for new visual exploration. Incorporating digital ink with oil-based mixed-media and handmade collage to further push the graphic complexity of an ever-changing environment. A soon TBA NFT marketplace will release the series in early summer of 2022
