Jackson’s abstracted environments depict a natural world in transformation and unrest. Jackson’s sensitive and intuitive handling of paint ultimately reveals a rich and elaborate terrain; an elemental surface of multiple readings. Jackson’s practice of application and elimination of bold marks of manipulated oil & ink based media, contribute to the works exceptional d e p t h a n d v i s u a l c o m plexity, enabling process and histor y to disclose infinite interpretations. A San Francisco native and resident, Jackson studied fine ar t and environmental design at San Francisco State University and Califor nia College of the Ar ts, Oakland, CA. Jackson is a recipient of many awards including: Commission from The San Fr ancisco Zoological Society and John & Michele McNellis, for “Red Ivor y - A Kingdom Under Siege”, a large scale video & sound installation, San Francisco, CA; Commission from The San Francisco Zoological Society & The Bernard Osher Foundation, for “Kingdom Animalia”, A large scale experimental video & sound installation, San Francisco, CA; N ath an ir a Fellow sh ip Aw ar d, presented by MMG Foundation, San Francisco, CA; P a t r i cOkliveH u g h e s c r e at e s s m a l l s c a l e wat e r c o l o r F u l l F e l l o w s h i p A w a r d , Vermont Studio Center, Johnson VT; Ar tist-in-Residency are bo t h (first sub t l e aThe n dSancFrancisco o m p l Zoological ex. My work interfaces along a continuum of painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Color and materiality are paramount. Inspired by obser vations of the manner in which light affects color with its passing movement and changes I am fascinated by the power of color to evoke emotion and to encourage contemplation, allowing the viewer to become the subject of the work. In my daily studio practice I attempt to strike a balance between painterly guts and the pared down elegance of formalism. The inherent tension between these two elements is filled with myster y and metaphor, challenging me to create works which have a sense of inevitability about them and which reveal a sense of oneness with the viewer. Betty Merken is an American painter and printmaker. Her work can be found in several galleries and numerous private and public collections in the United States, Asia, and Europe, and in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Fine Ar ts Museums of San Francisco (the de Young Museum and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor), the UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Por tland Ar t Museum in Por tland, Oregon. Long Beach Museum of Ar t, Long Beach, CA. Merken has been honored with fellowships from the Pinea-Linea de Costa Foundation, in Rota, Spain, the BAU Institute in Otranto, Italy and New York and the C ipv oi tsa i/ tNi oonr t hA- 1 6 Com we s t Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in Italy.
