ennis Riese knows something about hard work, good fortune, and keeping commitments. His father and uncle founded and built one of the most successful restaurant and real estate businesses in the country. But when Mr. Riese’s father asked him to join the company in 1991, they were facing hard times. Mr. Riese said yes to his father and set himself to turning the business around. Over time, his unwavering commitment had the family business thriving once again. Mr. Riese’s success led him to make an added commitment he deeply cares about – philanthropy. After serving meals to so many people through his restaurants, he decided to give back by feeding those in need. He became a board member and major benefactor of City Meals on Wheels in New York. However, the stress of building his business would produce a challenge of a different sort. On a weekend in 2007, he felt very tired and out of breath. The feeling was so unusual that he decided to go straight to the ER. That decision may have saved his life, because soon after he arrived, he had a heart attack. The doctors were able to treat him quickly and the consequences were minimized. After his recovery, he soon realized that he needed a doctor who could better manage his care on an ongoing basis. Upon doing some research, the name Richard Shlofmitz kept coming up. So he made an appointment and has never looked back. In 2014, Dr. Shlofmitz, the Chairman of Cardiology at St. Francis, ordered a stress test for Mr. Riese, and the results prompted him to perform an angiogram. Using a powerful new tool called optical coherence tomography, or OCT, Dr. Shlofmitz was able to detect potentially serious blockages in one of Mr. Riese’s coronary arteries, and was able to open up the blockages with a series of customized stents. Dr. Shlofmitz is a world leader in the research and use of OCT, which he describes as potentially revolutionary. “OCT enables you to see inside the coronary arteries within microns,” he says. “It can determine a blockage’s size, shape, composition, and effect on blood flow.” After his treatment, Mr. Riese felt great, went back to work, and quickly resumed all of his activities. “I am very grateful to Dr. Shlofmitz,” says Mr. Riese. “You are not just a number to him – he spends time with you and is so easy to talk to. I couldn’t be in better hands.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

In its continual pursuit of excellence and compassion in healthcare, St. Francis Hospital is an outstanding example of the mission of Catholic Health Services of Long Island. Long known for its reputation for world-class cardiac care, today the Hospital is evolving into a destination for patients on Long Island and the wider region who require more complex care in a range of specialties – from cancer to orthopedics, to other areas of general surgery. For 2015-16, U.S. News & World Report ranked St. Francis the best hospital on Long Island, and also ranked the Hospital one of the 50 best in the nation in Cardiology & Heart Surgery (13th), Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (16th), Geriatrics (36th), and Orthopedics (43rd). St. Francis has the singular distinction of being the only hospital on Long Island that was nationally ranked by U.S. News in any adult specialty. The Hospital is also one of the select few in the nation that have earned the coveted Magnet designation for excellence in nursing care three consecutive times. These achievements would not be possible without extraordinary teamwork throughout the Hospital and the spirited support of our extended family. I would like to thank Ruth Hennessey, our physicians, nurses, staff, and volunteers for their remarkable commitment to excellence in patient care. I also wish to thank the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary who inspire us every day by their example. I am sincerely grateful for the support of our benefactors and for the guidance of the CHS Board and their Chair, Salvatore F. Sodano. Finally, I would like to thank our Bishop, the Most Reverend William F. Murphy, for his leadership and his commitment to serve the healthcare needs of the entire Long Island community.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EVP & CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER

Alan D. Guerci, M.D. President & CEO Catholic Health Services of Long Island

Ruth E. Hennessey EVP & Chief Administrative Officer, St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center®

“Putting Patients First,” the theme of this year’s Annual Report, defines perhaps the most important aspect of excellence in healthcare. Along with training, experience, and judgment, it represents the mindset of an outstanding caregiver, the lens through which she or he sees every patient interaction and the hundreds of decisions that must be made every day. Along with the many accolades, recognition, and milestones we have achieved over the past year, none is more important than what our patients say about their experience at our Hospital. In objective surveys of patient satisfaction sponsored by the federal government, St. Francis has consistently been among the leaders in the New York region. Recently St. Francis scored highest on Long Island in patient surveys sponsored by medicare.gov asking, “Would you definitely recommend your hospital?” Our patient satisfaction results are especially meaningful in light of the major growth and changes that have taken place at St. Francis. In 2015 we marked the opening of our new ambulatory center that houses our Cancer Institute at 2200 Northern Boulevard, our largest facility expansion in recent years. Cancer treatments and orthopedic surgeries have grown exponentially. In cardiac care, the core of the hospital’s expertise and reputation, the Heart Valve Center completed its second year of pioneering work, and our Cardiac Catheterization Lab is breaking new ground in intravascular imaging, promising to transform the treatment of coronary artery disease. These developments represent a dramatic response to the present and future healthcare needs of our community, and they position us favorably as we anticipate the challenges and opportunities ahead. St. Francis Hospital’s success would not be possible without our generous friends and benefactors, and I am deeply grateful for their support. I would also like to thank the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary and our physicians, nurses, staff, and volunteers, for their dedication and commitment to our mission. I would also like to personally acknowledge Alan D. Guerci, M.D., CHS President & CEO, for his leadership of the system. Finally, I would like to thank our Bishop, the Most Reverend William F. Murphy, for his inspired leadership of Catholic healthcare on Long Island.

The Heart Valve Center

Tooty Touts TAVR

Since receiving a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in March of 2015, Bernice Ulanoff says she hasn’t slowed down a bit. The 90-year-old retired decorator, known to her friends as “Tooty” can’t tout the benefits of being a TAVR patient enough. The Long Island grandmother recently celebrated her 69th wedding anniversary with her husband Stan, the love of her life, and they look forward to celebrating their 70th with family. The close couple had a heartfelt reunion with Patricia Krug, R.N., a research nurse specialist who helps evaluate patients for the minimally-invasive option for treating aortic valve stenosis. “I feel very lucky,” says Mrs. Ulanoff, who remembers never thinking twice about undergoing the procedure after getting the good word that she was qualified to receive the revolutionary device.

A Multi-Faceted Approach Our highly skilled Heart Valve Center team prides itself on using state-ofthe art techniques to treat valvular disease. Pictured from left to right are: Newell Robinson, M.D., Director of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery; George Petrossian, M.D., Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Procedures; Andrew Berke, M.D., Director of Interventional Cardiology Research; Kristin Pasquarell, P.A., Administrative Director; and Neil R. Bercow, M.D., Cardiothoracic Surgeon.

Our Track Record for TAVR

A

s a leading innovator in cardiac care, the John Brancaccio Heart Valve Center at St. Francis offers a streamlined approach to treating valvular disease. Its pioneering physicians are nationally renowned experts in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, or TAVR, performing one of the highest volumes in the nation. Led by Co-Directors George Petrossian, M.D., and Newell Robinson, M.D., the Center provides a one-stop destination for the screening and evaluation of valvular disease – sparing patients the stress of having to go back and forth to multiple appointments across several locations. The Center affords patients the best of both worlds – access to a team of leading interventional cardiologists and topnotch cardiothoracic surgeons – all working hand-in-hand to evaluate the best course of treatment. Whether it is a minimally invasive procedure or traditional open-heart surgery, patients can rest assured that every option is weighed to ensure the most successful outcomes.

• Major findings by SFH physicians led to FDA approval of the revolutionary CoreValve. • More than 760 TAVRs have been performed at St. Francis since we began TAVR treatment in 2011. • Nearly 300 TAVR procedures were performed at SFH in 2015 with 350 expected to be done this year. • Our physicians are now participating in a major nationwide study that will provide this life-saving treatment to a broader range of patients.

Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery

S

t. Francis had one of the largest cardiac surgical volumes in New York State in 2015. Under the direction of Newell Robinson, M.D., Chairman of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, the program has been recognized by the New York State Department of Health for its outstanding success rates more times than any other Hospital in the NY Metro area. Nearly 1,200 open-heart surgeries were performed by St. Francis physicians in 2015. Their surgical expertise helped the Hospital gain national recognition for Cardiology and Heart Surgery from U.S. News & World Report for the ninth year in a row. Dr. Robinson is also co-director of the John Brancaccio Heart Valve Center at St. Francis Hospital and has helped to pioneer the revolutionary TAVR therapy for patients with severe aortic valve disease. The Department introduced a Left Ventricular Device (LVAD) Program in 2015. The new therapy, offered through the Kroll Family Center for Circulatory Support at St. Francis, gives patients with end-stage heart failure a new lease on life. It can be used as bridge therapy to stabilize patients while they wait for a heart transplant. But it’s also become a longer lasting therapy for those who do not qualify for a transplant because of their age or medical factors.

Javier Makes Headlines

Taking the Lead in Vascular Surgery

The cause of Javier Valencia’s heart problems remained a mystery for years until Timothy J. Vittorio, M.D., diagnosed the Ecuadorean immigrant with Chagas disease. The insect-borne parasitic illness – found mainly in rural areas of Latin America -- can trigger heart failure if left untreated. The only hope for Javier was to receive a Left Ventricular Assist Device or LVAD. Edward F. Lundy, M.D., Ph.D., implanted the first LVAD at St. Francis, making it also a first in Nassau County. The life-saving device will keep Javier’s heart pumping while he waits for a transplant. When he gets a new heart, the surgeon will be able to remove the LVAD pump that prolonged his life. “I feel good and have my energy again,” says the retired financial analyst, who recently celebrated his 55th birthday at St. Francis at a party organized by his LVAD care coordinator Jaime McDermott, MSN, ACNP-BC. “He’s gained some weight and is eating double portions at dinner,” says his wife Jessica. “He’s back with a vengeance.”

The Division of Vascular Surgery at St. Francis is led by Richard Matano, M.D., who has been with the Hospital for 26 years. Under Dr. Matano’s direction, its highly skilled surgeons performed 2,140 procedures in 2015. • The team has one of the highest volumes of carotid artery surgeries in the Northeast. • Their specialties include: Thoracic and Abdominal Aortic Disease Management; Limb Salvage; Chronic Wound Care; and Access Surgery for Hemodialysis. The Division was involved in a major nationwide study in 2015 that could change the face of vascular disease treatment: The Leopard Trial, a multicenter randomized trial designed to compare four different devices for endovascular aneurysm repair. It is also about to embark on another significant clinical trial: Crest 2, which will compare three different methods of stroke prevention to find the safest and most effective treatment.

Top of the Line

The cardiothoracic surgeons at St. Francis are tops in their class when it comes to life-saving openheart procedures. Pictured from left to right are: Newell Robinson, M.D,. T

he Cardiac Catheterization Lab at St. Francis remained one of the busiest facilities of its kind in the nation in 2015. Led by Thomas Pappas, M.D., the Cath Lab continued to be recognized for excellent success rates because of its sheer volume of cases and the vast experience of its medical staff. As the site of revolutionary procedures such as TAVR or the venue for new devices to enhance the imaging and treatment of cardiac disease, the Cath Lab maintained its national reputation for providing leading edge approaches to coronary care. It also offered new hope for people with chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure. Through a tiny implantable device called CardioMEMS, patients can be monitored around the clock from the comfort of their homes allowing their physicians to keep constant tabs on their condition.

Our Numbers Speak Volumes

Global Solutions As a sports enthusiast, Sean Levchuck, M.D., Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology at St. Francis, knows the value of a double play. And that’s what he delivered, saving two Russian boys born with holes in their hearts on the very same day. Five-year-olds Kiril Polyansky and Artem Sarafnov suffered from Patent Ductus Arteriosus or PDA, a heart defect that made them too tired to play like most children their age. But thanks to a minimally invasive procedure to correct their congenital conditions, both boys can now breathe a lot easier. “By using a tiny plug threaded to a catheter inserted through a needle hole in the children’s legs, we were able to close the holes in their hearts, much like inserting a cork into a bottle,” says Dr. Levchuck, who donated his services along with medical staff at the Hospital. The Gift of Life and students at Manhasset High School also provided support, raising $5,000 to help fund the life-saving trip from Russia to the U.S.

• According to the New York State Department of Health, St. Francis physicians performed the largest number of percutaneous coronary interventions or PCIs (angioplasties with stents) on Long Island in 2015. • More than 10,800 cardiac catheterizations and peripheral vascular procedures were performed during the year. • That includes nearly 3,400 PCIs- stents and angioplasties.

Arrhythmia & Pacemaker Center

T

he Arrhythmia & Pacemaker Center at St. Francis Hospital has a proud history of pioneering new approaches to treating cardiac rhythm abnormalities. We were among the first in the nation to offer implantable defibrillators and to offer radiofrequency ablation to cure certain arrhythmias. We helped pioneer the idea of using the defibrillator as a tool to prevent an initial sudden cardiac death. These approaches eventually led to more permanent cures and improved management of cardiac rhythm abnormalities. We also took the lead in using heat to ablate heart tissue to cure arrhythmias. In 2014, St. Francis Hospital made headlines by installing the Nanostim on a Long Island patient as part of a national study. The miniature leadless pacemaker was then FDA approved for commercial use. “The Nanostim is very different from a standard pacemaker,” says Joseph Levine, M.D, Director of the Arrhythmia and Pacemaker Center. He sees the device as ideal for younger, more active heart patients. “A person can go to the beach and people will never know that person has a pacemaker.”

Painless For Peter

As a sales representative for a major medical distribution company, Peter LaMantia made it his business to know about the latest devices. So when he learned he would be a good candidate for the revolutionary Nanostim leadless pacemaker, the former St. John’s University basketball team captain jumped at the chance. The tiny, minimally invasive, catheter-based device allowed LaMantia, who previously underwent open-heart surgery, to avoid surgery for a second time. “I never felt a thing and every time I’m checked, they say it’s working great,” he told us before being photographed with Elizabeth Haag, R.N., Associate Director of Research. “Within a few weeks, I was back at the gym.”

The Heart Center Adds New Beats

Did You Know? • The number of cancer treatments delivered at St. Francis has grown over 400% since the Cancer Institute began operating in 2012.

I

n our ongoing mission to provide the very best in both cardiac and noncardiac care, St. Francis continued to enhance its reputation in a growing number of specialties. From establishing a 189,000 square-foot Cancer Institute at 2200 Northern Boulevard to acquiring state-of-the-art tools to provide leading edge treatments, St. Francis proved that world-class care doesn’t have to be miles away. It can be close to home – in your own backyard. “Our governing vision has been to create a facility where patients can be treated with all their doctors under one roof, communicating in close contact with each other for the patient’s benefit,” says Bhoomi Mehrotra, M.D., Director of Oncologyand the Cancer Institute. Beyond oncology, that multidisciplinary commitment is also reflected by significant increases in volume for other noncardiac services, including orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery. 2015 also saw a number of firsts in the Hospital’s surgical history, highlighted by robotic and other minimally invasive approaches to complex conditions, paving the way for even more St. Francis-driven medical innovations in the years to come.

Coordinated Cancer Care

“I pray for both of you every day; that you may continue to do for others what you have done for me.” Cancer patient Gustavo Silva of Queens, NY confers with his doctors; Bhoomi Mehrotra, M.D., Director of Oncology and Director of the Cancer Institute at St. Francis Hospital, and Gary Gecelter, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Surgery. The Cancer Institute takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of cancer, shaping medical strategies to the unique needs of each patient. Mr. Silva received both surgery and oncologic infusion therapy. Early in 2016, the Cancer Institute received Accreditation with Commendation from the Commission on Cancer, the highest possible recognition.

Another Great Stride in Orthopedic Surgery

As an avid fisherman, Michael Giordano can appreciate the word mako. The Manhattan ER nurse received a MAKOplasty® surgical robotic, partial knee replacement from Kevin A. Cassidy, M.D., pictured here with Richard D’Agostino, M.D., Director of Orthopedic Surgery. Thanks to the state-of-the-art procedure, which was introduced for the first time in Nassau County by St. Francis, Giordano went trout fishing just a month after undergoing surgery.

Did You Know? • Orthopedic surgeries at St. Francis have more than tripled in the last five years, making our program the busiest one on Long Island for an individual hospital.

T

hree was the charm for our Hospital’s nurses in 2015. St. Francis once again received one of the most coveted and prestigious honors a hospital and its nurses can achieve – the Magnet™ designation for excellence in nursing care. This recognition is the result of a rigorous evaluation that included extensive interviews and reviews of nursing services, clinical outcomes, research, and patient care and satisfaction. It marks the third time in a row that the Hospital has received this highly regarded national recognition. Only about seven percent of hospitals in the U.S. have earned the Magnet™ designation. St. Francis has been a Magnet™ Hospital since 2006. It is one of only five adult hospitals on Long Island to hold this distinction and the only hospital in Nassau County to be designated three times. “We are extremely proud to have earned Magnet™ designation for the third time. It reflects what our patients know firsthand – that nurses at St. Francis work together as a team to uphold the utmost standards in providing compassionate and high quality care,” says Ann Cella, M.A., M.Ed, R.N., NEA-BC, Senior Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer. The Magnet™ program was created and is administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing philosophy and practice, adhere to national standards for improving patient care, have an active research program, and display leadership and sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity. The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association and is the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States. St. Francis Hospital’s Magnet™ designation, which includes annual reviews, is valid for four years.

Highly Educated in Patient Care • 89% of our nurses have advanced degrees. • 42% of our nurses are certified in over 20 different specialties. • Approximately 8% of our nurses are Nurse Practitioners, which means that they have both an RN license and an NP license. Another 10% are pursuing their education in nurse practitioner programs. • Many of our nurses are involved in research studies. • A dozen of our nurses also teach nursing at local colleges.

U.S. News & World Report Recognition • For the ninth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has recognized St. Francis as one of the Best Hospitals in America, ranking St. Francis #13 for cardiology and heart surgery nationwide (2015-16). • U.S. News also ranked St. Francis among the top 50 hospitals in the U.S. in three other adult specialties – Gastroenterology & GI Surgery; Geriatrics; and Orthopedics – the only hospital on Long Island to be nationally ranked in any adult specialty (2015-16). • St. Francis was the top ranked hospital on the Island by U.S. News rated 4th in New York State (2015-16). • Recognized as high performing in three additional specialties: Neurology/ Neurosurgery, Pulmonology, and Urology (2015-16).

“They Gave Me My Life Back”

At 87, Louis McDavid already seems to have led several lives. Well before his career as an engineer, Mr. McDavid spent over 20 years in the US Air Force as a flight navigator. During the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, he guided one of the bombers that were sent to destroy the Russian missile sites – only to be called back at the last minute when the crisis was averted. He also served in the Korean War, and later flew over 170 missions in Vietnam. Despite such harrowing experiences, he says he was never more frightened than the day he began exhibiting the symptoms of severe stroke. Paramedics brought him to the St. Francis Hospital Emergency Department. “Mr. McDavid was presenting with the classic signs of stroke,” says Ravi Venugopal, M.D., so there was no time to lose. Mr. McDavid vividly remembers hearing the doctor’s diagnosis of stroke. However, after a speedy series of tests that identified a blood clot in the brain, Dr. Venugopal, in consultation with neurology, approved administration of TPA, the clot-busting drug. Miraculously, in less than six hours, Mr. McDavid began to regain his powers of speech, and he could feel tears of relief in his eyes. Three days later, he was released from the Hospital, completely recovered. “I am so gratefuI to St. Francis Hospital,” says Mr. McDavid. “I enjoy my life, and I am so thankful to them for giving it back to me.”

Get With the Guidelines Honors • St. Francis has earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for five consecutive years. (2015). • The Hospital also received a Get With The Guidelines Gold Quality Achievement Award for Heart Failure care (2015).

National Nursing Awards • Two critical care units at St. Francis Hospital hold Gold-level Beacon Awards for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (CTICU and SICU). One holds a Silver-level award (MICU 2). 2015-16 • St. Francis earned Magnet designation for excellence in nursing for the third consecutive time, the only hospital in Nassau to do so. • Three St. Francis Hospital medical-surgical units hold the PRISM Award for Nursing Excellence.

Recent Accreditations • The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has designated St. Francis Hospital a nationally accredited surgical weight loss center. (2015) • The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons granted Full Accreditation with Commendation to the Cancer Institute at St. Francis Hospital. (2016)

S

t. Francis Hospital’s Emergency Department experienced almost a 5 percent increase in volume in 2015 with over 26,000 patient visits. Only three hospitals on Long Island saw increases of this magnitude and only St. Francis had an acuity rate such that more than 45 percent of the patients seen in our ED required either observation or admission to the Hospital. The Department played a crucial role in receiving the American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Award for Stroke Care for the fifth year in a row. It also began a Neuro-Intervention Program for Comprehensive Stroke Care, which uses new leading-edge technology to remove blood clots in the brain during acute strokes, giving stroke patients new hope for better recoveries. “When minutes count, we want people to rest assured that they don’t have to go far to get the best emergency care, “ says Mark Hoornstra, M.D., Chairman of Emergency Medicine. “It’s right here in their own backyard.”

The doctors, nurses, and professional staff of St. Francis Hospital are wholly committed to providing patients with the finest care possible. With our nationally renowned physicians and leading treatment technologies, St. Francis provides the benefits of a world class medical institution in a caring, personal environment. That extends to the cleanliness of the rooms, to the food patients are served, to the overall attentiveness of our staff. Little wonder that when government surveys ask patients whether they would recommend St. Francis, we out score every hospital on Long Island. (Source:

Your Partners in Health

St. Francis Hospital continued to enhance its community health and wellness programs in 2015, offering patients a wide variety of options for enhancing their well being. Our Cardiac Fitness and Rehabilitation Center in Greenvale remained one of the busiest hospital-based programs of its kind in the region, receiving nearly 55,000 visits. The DeMatteis Center for Cardiac Research and Education also added some innovative programs to extend its list of Community Calendar events, including a new Yoga for a Healthy Back workshop, a Weight Loss program, and Stepping On, a falls prevention series for seniors.

Cardiac Outreach In 2015, the Outreach Program of St. Francis Hospital marked 26 years of providing cardiac consultation, testing, and treatment for uninsured patients . Through referrals from Rotocare, Community Outreach, the Bishop McHugh Center, and word of mouth, the program continued to reach out to those in need, ensuring that they receive vital care.

On the Road Again

The St. Francis Hospital’s Outreach Bus stayed on course, bringing multiple preventative screening programs to the community. Our mobile clinic visited numerous neighborhoods from eastern Queens to western Suffolk with a continuing emphasis to reach medically underserved communities. The total number of health screenings reached more than 3,700 in 2015. We also delivered nearly 1,100 flu shots through Catholic Health Services’ “Healthy Sundays” initiative.

Slam Dunk St. Francis Hospital’s Student Athlete Screening Program celebrated its sixth anniversary in 2015. The popular program provides potentially life-saving screenings to high school student athletes, grades 9 through 12. A total of 128 screenings were provided during the year, with 13 of them in need of a follow up.

Imaging the Future of Cardiac Research Dr. Reicheck credits Alan D. Guerci, M.D., President & CEO of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, with molding a research strategy predicated on using imaging for cardiovascular research to foster clinical trials. Over time that strategy has yielded an impressive portfolio of clinical trials as well as a dramatic convergence of non-invasive imaging and imaging taking place in our Cath Lab, as led by Richard Shlofmitz, M.D., Chairman of Cardiology at St. Francis. “Dr. Shlofmitz has become a tremendously active clinical investigator using invasive imaging,” says Dr. Reichek. “That in turn intersects with our cardiac CT work, imaging coronary arteries non-invasively, so we have a whole host of projects based on this convergence.” These projects promise lasting benefits for patient care. That kind of synergy is difficult to find elsewhere, says Dr. Reicheck, as institutions tend to get very compartmentalized. “In many respects, St. Francis Hospital offers researchers a clean slate. We’re open – out of the silo, so to speak – giving all stake-holders real visibility into our research activities, which fosters knowledge sharing and collaboration.” The research being done at St. Francis is creating opportunities to extend its research activities throughout the CHS system. “We have educational and training capabilities for technologists and nurses involved in complex imaging challenges that do not exist elsewhere,” says Dr. Reichek. “So there’s a huge potential for extending our imaging capabilities and clinical trials throughout the entire system.”

A

s a nationally recognized leader in cardiac research, St. Francis Hospital offers patients the opportunity to benefit from leading-edge technologies and to have an impact on how these modalities will be used in the future. This has enabled the Hospital to develop new enhancements in the application of MRI, as well as the ability to look at echocardiology in a new way. These developments translate into consistently innovative and significantly improved care strategies for patients. Over the years, the Research & Education program at St. Francis has matured to leadership class on the global stage. As Director of Research and Cardiac Diagnostic Imaging, Nathaniel Reichek, M.D. has been the guiding force. Asked about what explains our emergence as a national – indeed, global – leader, Dr. Reichek is quick to answer. “St. Francis has many unique advantages. On the one hand we have a remarkably high level of excellence in our clinical work, both in nursing staff and physicians. On the other hand, we have an enormous amount of flexibility as compared to most academic institutions.”

2015’s Research & Education Team Nathaniel Reichek, M.D., Director of Research and cardiac Diagnostic Imaging; Elizabeth Haag, RN, Associate Clinical Director; Jie Jane Cao, M.D., Clinical Director of Cardiac CT and MRI Services. Dr. Cao was named Director of Research and Cardiac Imaging in early 2016. Dr. Reicheck continues his engagement with the R&E team on a part-time basis.

Attracting the Best in Research The growth in St. Francis’ commitment to research might best be measured in its growth in staff. “When I arrived here in 2001, the non-invasive cardiac imaging group consisted of five people doing echo and nuclear cardiology,” recalls Dr. Reichek. “We’re now recruiting a 13th, and I expect a 14th will be needed soon after. We’ve reached critical mass in both the clinical trials domain and in investigator-initiated research. We’re expanding further in cardiac CT and MRI and expect to become even more visible leaders in those areas as well.” Elizabeth Haag, RN, Associate Clinical Director, is very proud of the research

team’s output. “I honestly believe we are on par with all of the leading cardiovascular centers. We participate in many global trials. I think our success is due to the highly collaborative environment we have here. The dedication is exceptional, and we have an outstanding staff of high-performers, each very precise in their collection of data. It’s interesting to note that we have a lot of long-term employees, with very little turn-over. That speaks well of the dedication factor, but in practical terms it’s also a huge plus for research, as there is no break in continuity.” The TAVR program has generated a particularly high degree of impact, both clinically and in terms of research. The emergence of TAVR – Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement – has essentially remade the care of a huge population of patients who previously had nowhere to turn. Most patients presently receiving TAVR tend to be in their eighties and nineties, most of whom would be unfit for cardiac surgery. The TAVR solution – pioneered by George Petrossian, M.D. and Newell Robinson, M.D. – made it possible for St. Francis to build a tremendously strong clinical trials enterprise. Additionally, current trials are pointing to the use of TAVR as an alternative to open surgical valve replacement in moderate and low risk patients as well. Dr. Shlofmitz’s keen interest in clinical trials and the many facets of interventional cardiology has led to fruitful collaborations with leaders at other hospitals, which has broadened the St. Francis knowledge base and gained the Hospital added recognition. The Cancer Institute at St. Francis Hospital is also expanding its research portfolio. “We’ve put together a protocol to recruit patients from the oncology practices, which is providing significant insights into the heart and chemotherapy,” adds Liz Haag. Clearly, the research enterprise at St. Francis Hospital is inextricably intertwined with the clinical enterprise. As Dr. Reichek sums it up, “The same imaging physicians who are doing research with advanced imaging techniques are providing steady streams of clinical information to individual physicians throughout the institution day in, day out. That leads to a very collaborative set of relationships that fosters quality research.”

hilanthropy continues to be a driving force behind St. Francis Hospital’s investments in new programs and services. In 2015, more than $14.2 million in support was received by the St. Francis Hospital Foundation from grateful patients and generous individuals, corporations and foundations. These gifts have helped St. Francis stay ahead of the curve in its efforts to be innovative and pursue the best options in care for patients. The John Brancaccio Heart Valve Center is one example of a recent transformational gift that will provide for the health of future generations. With open heart surgery 25 years behind him, retired mechanical engineer John Brancaccio was fascinated by new developments in minimally invasive aortic valve replacement at St. Francis. He decided to fund the Heart Valve Center with a bequest and takes joy in knowing that his exceptional quality of life at age 90 will be multiplied in the lives of others. St. Francis Hospital’s goal of creating a new outpatient center, anchored by The Cancer Institute, was reached with the support of many generous benefactors. The capital campaign to fund this project surpassed the $21 million mark at the end of 2015 and continues toward a $30 million goal that will advance plans to open a Radiation Oncology Center in East Hills in 2017. Under the leadership of Chair Herbert J. McCooey, Jr., the St. Francis Hospital Foundation Board of Directors continues to steward the outstanding support of our hospital community for these and many other programs important to the patients and families we serve.

Leaving a Legacy

Getting Social

More and more, people utilize social media to connect to the institutions that matter to them. That includes hospitals. St. Francis has made strides over the past year to present a strong and visible presence in the social media sphere. Our Facebook page offers a great resource for staying up to date on Hospital news and happenings. It’s also where patients and their families can post their honest feedback, like this entry:

Designed for Women

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S. As one of the nation’s foremost cardiac centers, St. Francis offers a new prevention program specifically designed to meet the needs of women. Led by two distinguished female cardiologists, Madhavi Kadiyala, M.D., Director (left) and Louise Spadaro, M.D.,FACC (right), the program is aimed at identifying women who are at increased risk while fostering further research to understand the specific nature of women’s heart disease.

I have no words to express how thankful I am to Dr. Goldman and every nurse and worker within the hospital. Thank you for returning my husband to me and our three young children. We are forever thankful. In addition to our Facebook page, St. Francis has a Twitter account as well as a YouTube Channel offering numerous videos of patient stories, accolades and latest news.

Bariatric Surgery Program Named Center of Excellence

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) designated St. Francis Hospital a nationally accredited surgical weight loss center. The designation recognizes St. Francis for providing safe, high quality care for our patients. A bariatric surgery program has to undergo rigorous review to achieve accreditation as a center of excellence. Qualifying measures include proving that it can maintain the necessary resources and standards of practice to assure that patients get the best care. “For patients facing serious health challenges from chronic obesity, we offer state-of-the art weight loss options” says Shawn M. Garber, M.D., FACS, FASMBS, Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at St. Francis Hospital. “We have one of the largest caseloads in the Northeast, and our board-certified surgeons have been consistently recognized for their excellent success rates.”

t. Francis Hospital is blessed to have over 500 volunteer workers who assist us in most every area of the Hospital. Each year we honor them for their dedication at a gala luncheon event. This past year we were honored to recognize Elizabeth O’Donnell for her 50 years of service to St. Francis. The event, which took place at The Inn at New Hyde Park, featured a special presentation from Nicholas Guariglia, Deputy Chief of Staff for the Town of North Hempstead, who recognized this major milestone with an official proclamation (see lower left). ‘Beth,’ as her friends call her, began volunteering at the Hospital at the age of 22. Her father suffered a heart attack back in 1962 and his subsequent treatment and recovery St. Francis prompted her to want to give back. She’s been a part of St. Francis ever since. Even after becoming a teacher and working for 33 years at East Meadow Elementary School, Beth continued to volunteer during her summer breaks, usually at the Information Desk. Now as a retiree, Elizabeth can be found volunteering at the Gift Shop. “Beth is a truly kindhearted and compassionate lady, who’s always willing to help others,” says Kimberley Arlotta, Director of Volunteer Services at St. Francis. “You can see it in the way she engages with patients and her fellow volunteers. She really epitomizes the essence of what volunteering is all about.”

Over 500 Volunteers • Median Age - 67 • 157 honored for reaching milestones ranging from 100 hours to 20,500 hours • We have volunteers with as many as 50 years of service: • • • • •

Elizabeth O’Donnell – 50 years of service Elvira Castano - 40 years of service Christa Nagel - 30 years of service Gerald Bekerman - 10 years Bill Johnson - 20,500 hours

he St. Francis Hospital Ambulatory Center and Cancer Institute has settled into its new home at 2200 Northern Blvd in East Hills, NY. The sprawling facility is very modern, using advanced technology and is staffed by an expanded team of seasoned professionals. Largely funded through private philanthropy, the new campus reflects St. Francis Hospital’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for non-cardiac specialties, such as cancer care. “Our governing vision was to create a facility where patients can be treated with all their doctors under one roof, communicating in close contact with each other for the patient’s benefit,” says Bhoomi Dr. Mehrotra, M.D. Director of Oncology and the Cancer Institute at St. Francis Hospital At the new facility’s core is a conference center to host multi-disciplinary tumor boards, a reflection of St. Francis Hospital’s goal of providing individualized, continuous care. “These boards allow both hospital staff and community doctors from various specialties – along with critical ancillary support services such as genetic counseling, social workers, and nutritionists – to assemble on a regular basis and review each patient’s situation in a prospective manner,” explained Dr. Mehrotra.
