‘Nil sa s op mum’ A LETTER FROM OUR HEAD TEACHER

Dear Parents, It is lovely to be writing the summer Newsletter with the sun actually shining for once! It has been a great term and our young people have been working extremely hard and are now ready for their break. I know you will already be buying replacement uniform for September but please check the letter we sent out recently to ensure you do not waste money buying the wrong shoes etc. I am delighted to tell you that Mr Hughes (Science) has been commissioned as a Worship Leader within his church. This means that he is now authorised to lead services. His commissioning service took place at Pelsall Methodist Church on July 8th. Mr Hughes always plays a huge role in our prayer life here at St Francis. Miss Ball, one of our support staff, became the UK kickbox champion two weeks ago. We have a lot of talented members of our community. I hope you spotted a former pupil, Daniel Martin, who won stage nine of the Tour de France and is going from strength to strength on the international cycling circuit. Well done, Daniel! Miss Nickless (P.E.) is getting married this summer – let us hope they get this glorious weather for their special day. The summer term is usually when staff move on to other schools for promotion or for retirement. This month, we are sad to lose one of our longest serving teachers, Mrs Beaumont. She joined our school 38 years ago and, as many parents who were taught by her will agree, has been a tremendous force within St Francis. Mrs Beaumont has been dedicated to helping our students prepare for the world beyond school and ensuring that her students have received a curriculum enriched with a variety of experiences and lots of fun. She has been the Head of Achievement and Learning in Y7 (H.A.L.) for several years and has been instrumental in helping our new students settle in each year. Her love for and loyalty to our school shines through everything she does. We will all miss her and hope that she visits us from time to time. Mrs Brownsword, one of our Special Needs teachers, is also retiring after fifteen years with us. She has helped so many of our youngsters with her kindness and concern for their individual progress. Mrs Lennon, our Head of Achievement and Learning in Y8, is emigrating. She has been with us for ten years. We will miss her enthusiasm but wish her well in her new life. Mr Hurrion will take over as H.A.L. of Y8 in September and Miss Sutton will become H.A.L. of Y7.

Congratulations go to Mrs Giles (English) and Mrs Hamar (Maths) who are both off to lead their own departments in other schools and to Mrs Stevens (Design Technology) and Mrs Littler (MFL) who have also gained promotion in other schools. We are also saying goodbye to Mrs Barratt (Health and Social Care) and thank her for her commitment to our students. Some staff who have been with us just for the year are also moving on so we also say farewell to Miss Spooner (ICT), Mrs Trivasse (Special Needs) and Mr Benjamin (English). We look forward to the summer break and hope that you and your families have a good rest. Thank you for your continued support for our great school, P. Mullins.

Our pupils support the Pilgrims in Lourdes During half term students and staff travelled to Lourdes as part of the Birmingham Diocesan Pilgrimage. The students were a true inspiration to me as they put their Faith in to Action at every opportunity. They worked with the VIP pilgrims from our Diocese, taking them to Masses and processions and serving meals, cleaning and accompanying them on shopping trips. Our pupils were keen to experience every opportunity and were asked to do extra duties regularly. These ranged from serving at the International Mass with Cardinal Murphy O ‘Connor to carrying Our Lady at the Marian Procession. They showed great composure and spirituality at all times and really were a credit to the school and the Diocese.

been a great inspiration to both students and staff. My favourite moment was when we led Night Prayer in the Accuiel and the students stood up and spoke from the heart about their

own faith and the importance of coming to Lourdes in ‘The Year of Faith.’ They were so sincere, open and passionate and there was not a dry eye in the room. I found it very humbling to be surrounded by such wonderful young people who truly made a difference to the lives of the pilgrims that they served during our week in Lourdes.

Our pilgrimage was greatly enhanced by the presence of Father Leadbeater. Over the last 7 years he has led us spiritually and

Pupil voice on Lourdes - they loved it! Our pilgrimage to Lourdes was amazing, and I am definitely planning to go again this time next year. I would recommend it to other students because it is a very beautiful and holy place. The prayerful atmosphere around the Grotto where Bernadette Soubirous had her visions is really moving, and it is easy to imagine what happened there just over one hundred and fifty five years ago. Our group went to Lourdes as Handmaidens and Brancardiers, so we spent all of our time on duty with the other Pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Rhiannon Charles gives her view. When we took them to the torchlight procession, I was stunned; I almost couldn’t believe the number of Pilgrims in attendance from countries all over the world, and the glowing light from the candles that people held lit up the statue of Our Lady at the front of the procession and the whole area that the Pilgrims were walking around.

There were so many ways that we could take part in the masses every morning and the International Mass on Wednesday, like carrying the banner for our school up to the alter, doing the offertory and especially singing all of the amazing songs that we were taught before some of the services. I was so glad that we had the mass booklet, because it meant I knew exactly what was happening in the masses and that I can now keep the songs and a piece of my experience at Lourdes with me for years to come.

The one week that we spent in Lourdes is undoubtedly one of the most amazing experiences in my life. The peaceful atmosphere, the fellowship and even the unending rain, all in its own way, had such an enlightening and spiritual effect. Lourdes is so different to all the other places of pilgrimage and is moving in such a unique way. Sitting in front of the grotto, staring at the statue of Mother Mary is just an example of the many awe inspiring aspects of Lourdes as well

It was deeply touching, being in the presence of Mother Mary, who had created such a deep bond between us all, making us all like one big family. The time we spent with the pilgrims, getting to know them personally, hearing their countless stories and having many moments of

laughter was a very big eye opener, allowing me to see that we are all one in Jesus, regardless of age, disability or any other boundaries. It is honestly so hard to put into words how amazing my experience was, but I can honestly say that it is something that will remain in my heart for a long time and I’m sure those who came with me would say the same. I would definitely recommend this pilgrimage to any other youth members and I am positive that they would be touched just as much as I was.

To know and see all the different countries and languages and for the world to all come together to Lourdes to celebrate the exact same faith as me and to come for the same reason as me is just incredible. To know that I am part of the same community as all these people is beyond amazing. The love and care which everyone showed to each other is extraordinary. It is such an

emotional place, to know we all share the same faith and all believe in the same thing. Being an altar server in the International Mass and serving for the cardinal is an experience I will never forget. To work with other youths and see that they also have the same ambition as you to help others and make a difference in this world is incredibly refreshing. This is one of the greatest weeks I have ever experienced and will never forget and I cannot wait to go back next year.

Procession of the Blessed Sacrament in Walsall

The experience was amazing; being able to show my faith and take part in the Blessed Sacrament procession was great. It was very colourful with the banners and the big umbrellas. The people watching also seemed to be in awe. When we had Benediction they all stood silent as a sign of respect. There were a few readings and his Grace the Archbishop preached to us and when he gave us a final blessing I was in awe. By Sneha Benni

The Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, which we took part in, was an important religious experience. As we were walking through the centre of Walsall, usually full of people rushing, we saw the impact our faith had on the people around us. It made them stop for a while and reflect on their own lives. This emotional moment gave everyone involved clear sense of community we share in Christ. The outward sign of faith in action made us proud to be Catholic, and brought us together to be stronger in expressing our beliefs. By Francesca Andrews and Kamila Urban I felt that people were standing up for their faith and putting their faith into action especially in this Year of Faith. I, as a Sixth Form student kept the procession in order as a steward. This made me feel like I was part of a bigger community than I expected. This was a memorable day in which I will never forget. ‘Nil sa s op mum’ MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

We explore mental health with MIND week Megan Humph- by holding a week of activirey tells us all about MIND week.

Mental health is an area which is becoming increasingly important in today’s society. Large numbers of students deal with anxiety and depression brought on by stress, and many are unaware of how to deal with these problems. At St. Francis of Assisi School, we decided to raise awareness of the importance of mental health

ties and assemblies. A group of us came together, led by our teacher Mrs Russell, and we created a MIND group. We led assemblies and provided activities to be used during Catholic Citizenship lessons.

were surprised.

The week was a huge success and there was a real ‘buzz’ about school, particularly when pupils and staff were passing “happy hero” ribbons to each other as a sign of a good deed. Our assemblies helped to inform and support the year groups. For example, pupils now understand the commonality of depression. Nobody quite expected the numbers to be as large as they were – even teachers

In the end, everyone came away having learnt something new, even the MIND group. We wanted to show others that they are never alone, and help is always available. The primary message was that in times of need prayer comes first and the serenity prayer used in assembly reiterated this. The support shown by students and staff alike was extraordinary.

‘Nil sa s op mum’ MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

A student talks about their experiences with a mental health disorder ... When times get very low in my life I feel so alone. It feels like everyone knows and is staring at me and whispering in the corridors. It feels like everyone is against me and that no one understands my view on situations. You never know how someone will react when you say you have a mental health problem. There's still that huge misconception that those of us with chemical imbalances don't work or are incapable of doing a job that is stressful or mentally challenging. One large study on bipolar disorder in children and teens found that more than one-third of study participants made at least one serious suicide attempt.

Newsletter Summer 2013

I think a lot of people see this terrifying statistic or watch a bit of Eastenders and assume that I can’t control my actions, my thoughts or am unable to make rational decisions. I find myself with a shorter temper now, the slightest things irritate me and make my skin crawl. Everything like this builds up and eats away at me and I feel like I can’t tell anyone because they will think I am over reacting. But all this tension builds up and usually gets taken out on someone close to me. I wished more people knew about the different types of my disorder and didn’t just class me as a nutter.

Phoebe White in year 10 has recently returned from representing the West Midlands at the English Schools Athletics Championships at the Alexander Stadium, Perry Barr. She made the final in the 300m and with a personal best time established herself in the top 5 nationally in her favoured event. Due to her success, Phoebe will be performing at the School Games Talent Inspiration programme in September, in Sheffield. Niall progressed through the ranks this year, moving from County to Regional, and then onto National level. Niall made it through to the final of the Amateur Boxing Association championships in his weight category and as a result achieved the ultimate for any budding sportsperson, representing his country. Connor is currently training with the national squad for Karate and we look forward to hearing more about his exploits in the near future. Since the last edition of the newsletter was published we have continued to have a considerable amount of team success. We have had our most successful season in terms of football for many years. On the back of league success for year 7, 8 and 9 earlier in the year, we had 3 cup finals in May to focus our attentions upon. First up, our year 10 boys got the ball rolling with a comfortable 4-2 victory over Pool Hayes, in the Silver Plate competition. final at Bescot Stadium. Following a tight affair, the boys came out victorious with a 1-0 victory against Barr Beacon and went home with a winner’s medal to go with the great memories of the day. Finally, our allconquering year 9 team were hoping to make it a hat-trick of cup final victories for St Francis of Assisi. True to form, they were able to do so and following a commanding performance, came out victorious with a 2-1 victory against Pool Hayes. We look forward to repeating this success when the new season comes around in September. June marked another month of success for St Francis of Assisi students in the sporting calendar. Our Key Stage 4 boys and girls emulated the Key Stage 3 teams in being selected to represent Walsall in the Black Country Games at Volleyball. Also representing Walsall were our gymnastics team, having been victorious in the Walsall Schools Gymnastics Championships. The team of Alice

Also representing Walsall were our year 8 boys and girls’ athletics team, following their first place finish at the Walsall Schools Athletics Championships earlier in the year. The boys’ team performed admirably and finished 5th overall. As we finally have some great weather to enjoy it seems appropriate to talk about how we are getting on in our summer sports. Each performer was greeted with rapturous applause and cheering throughout, and all were inspired to do their very best on the day. The sport leadership academy also had a major role to play in the success of the day. They were integral in the officiating and organisation of all events, as well as the collation of the scoring systems. With reference to the scoring, it proved to be very close throughout the course of the day. The eventual winners were Jennings with a total of 894 points amassed following all events. DID YOU KNOW? Eye of the Ɵger - Niall Farrell is one to watch Matthew Cooper interviews our formidable (but friendly) Niall Farrell.

I had the privilege of interviewing a hard core fighting machine in the guise of the cheerful and driven Niall Farrell of Year 10. Niall is a well liked and respected member of his year group, who revealed that much of his spare time is taken up training. He has to be motivated and committed to his sport of boxing, exercising hard between fights and slowing down in the very last week to ensure he is mentally prepared to beat his opponent. Niall admits he used to feel nervous before a fight but, as time has gone on, these nerves have been replaced with excitement. Niall has gone from success to success in the last two months alone. In May

16

he secured his place in the finals of the Junior Aba Championships, which saw him gain the silver medal. If this was not enough of an achievement, he was then invited to train in the England camp alongside the best boxers in the country. He has gone on to represent England in the Junior 3 Nations and won a gold medal. Niall had to fight the same opponent who had beaten him in May to win gold, but Niall delivered an excellent performance, proving he is going from strength to strength.

Junior Championships in the Ukraine in September. Niall tries to balance school work and his sport and in any spare moments he has, just like many of his friends, he listens to chart music to help him to unwind. Will he be a future Olympic hopeful? Watch this space…

J'adore une pizza parce que c'est très savoureux et irrésistible. Hier soir j'ai mangé une pizza, c'était magnifique!

ing to natural hazards and the environment. These included being able to develop earthquake proof buildings, prevent damages from tsunamis with a simulator and studying a crime scene investigation using evidence from the scene! One student that went on the trip said “We were able to gain more knowledge about physical geography and how geography can be linked with various careers. It put us in real life situations that we can use geography to solve – like the

tsunami survival game. It allowed me to use decision making skills in real life situations! I would consider looking at doing geography in the future and will take skills like team work and decision making from the day. Overall I enjoyed the day; it was a good experience and I learned a lot form it!” The day proved to be a successful one as the day stood out to the students as being well organised, informative and enjoyable for them. This is trip is highly recommended for anyone with and love for all things geography!

Irish dancing champion! Our own John Whitehurst competed in Boston over the Easter holidays and is now the Irish Dancing World Champion for his age group!

We support Fr. Michael’s day of prayer Each priest has a day of prayer during the Year of Faith and the Diocese allocated last Thursday for Fr. Michael. Students in RE went into the Chapel during the day and many members of staff joined in to support this day.

Danger - dinosaur on the loose: Watch out for the STEMosaurus! We were involved in the STEMosaurus project with Mr. Barratt, building a dinosaur skeleton. First, we drew around parts of the STEMosaurus model on wood. We cut them with a very sharp electric saw and sanded them smooth. We cut slits into the parts so they would slot together. Then we built our STEMosaurus! It’s great! The project was hard work, but also a lot of fun. We would definitely do it again. When we saw it, we were very pleased - it was outstanding.

Abbie Battison and Edward Green tell us about STEMosaurus. ____________________ The project was a really good idea and every bit of it was interesting. We learned loads of new things and we were able to enjoy seeing our masterpiece. The STEMosaurus will be on display around school, so look out for it!

Thank-you for all who prayed - Father has said that he felt ‘very loved.’

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a charity which aims to create a world where young people can reach their full potential whatever their circumstances. It provides a balanced programme of activities that develops the whole person; mind and body in an environment of social interaction and team working. It involves completing three sections; physical, skill and volunteering including the final expedition. These three sections allow you to improve yourself as a person and building physical stamina. If you are discouraged it is a sign of pride because it shows you trust in your own power. Your selfsufficiency, your selfishness and your intellectual pride will inhibit His coming to live in your heart because God cannot fill what is already full. It is as simple as that.

Au lieu de rester à la maison regarder la télé, vous pouvez opter pour un petit jogging au soleil.

Peut-être que vous pouvez échanger votre paquet de chips par jour pour une pomme ou votre dessert pour un yaourt.
