Employee Champions Giving Back Takes Centre Stage Before lights! camera! action! can happen, Reema Fuller and the dedicated staff at Theatre Antigonish work behind the scenes to bring professionally-led, local theatre to life on the stage of the historic Bauer Theatre. As Managing Director of Festival Antigonish, Fuller uses performance art to draw people together — something that was especially challenging during the past year. Once the university gymnasium, the Bauer Theatre has long hosted groups of students, faculty, staff, and community members, who come together to be educated, enlightened, and entertained. Fuller, who moved to Antigonish in 2007 when her husband accepted a tenure-track position in the

Reema Fuller

Faculty of Business, is passionate about ensuring that the Theatre remains a vital part of the fabric of Antigonish. She is also grateful to the festival’s supporters who share this passion. “Ticket sales only cover a fraction of our budget, so we rely on the generosity of our supporters and government subsidies for the arts,” explains Fuller, whose own generosity supports the Theatre and its programs. And, like many employees of StFX, she’s an active contributor to university programs and initiatives, such as the Xaverian Scholarship and Bursary Fund and the Gerald Schwartz School of Business. “I’m in my 40’s now, but I still remember how important the opportunity to access scholarships was for me as a student,” she says.

Rock Stars and Cool Courses When it comes to teaching during a pandemic, nothing is normal. Sociology professor Lynda Harling Stalker, known for her out-of-the-box research and course offerings, wasn’t daunted by the idea of trying something new. After all, two of her innovative courses have been previously featured by Maclean’s magazine, dubbed ‘cool courses’ to take at StFX. “The Sociology of Anne of Green Gables” weaves the study of the classic Canadian novel with theoretical elements of sociology, and her course on hockey

culture. Given Dr. Harling Stalker’s ongoing appetite for giving students a unique learning experience, it’s no surprise that she was able to create an exciting classroom environment in a pandemic, either. That same desire — to make students’ experiences excellent — underpins her reasons for financially supporting the university, too. She’s long donated to the Reverend Frank J. Mifflen Prize in Sociology, awarded each spring to a graduating student for excellence in academic coursework and extracurricular activities. “I try to give my students every opportunity to be successful,” she notes — an effort recognized by those same students, who once gave her a StFX-branded cardigan, emblazoned with the phrase, “Sociology Mom.”

Donor Insights: Alumni Survey 2020

Every few years, the StFX Alumni Office undertakes a survey to learn how the university’s advancement department can best engage and serve our alumni. In May 2020, we received more than 2,000 responses to our online survey, then worked to compare our results with those of other universities in our peer group.
