MORE THAN JUST A UNIVERSITY When I arrived at St. Francis Xavier University as Academic Vice-President and Provost in 2015, it was immediately clear that StFX was more than just a university. It was evident that I was joining a community of scholars, students, staff, and alumni who were bound by their unique experiences and their commitment to a set of important values. Now, as interim President and Vice-Chancellor, I have the immense privilege of being an ambassador for the same community that welcomed me with such open arms. I’ve spent much of this fall travelling across Canada, attending alumni receptions, getting to know our donors, and meeting with students who will, hopefully, join the Xaverian family. It’s exciting to share news about our campus community – from the expansion of X-Project to September’s Grand Opening of Mulroney Hall and the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government. During this year’s Homecoming, I was especially excited to celebrate 50 years of Women in Varsity Sport at StFX, during a breakfast event celebrating their accomplishments, and at the X-Women rugby game, which occupied the marquee slot on Saturday afternoon. It’s interesting to note that all of the private donors featured in this report are women. Time and again, we see just how dedicated our alumnae are to helping future generations of students. We have many projects on the go, including fundraising for student bursaries, embedded in the Xaverian Fund, which was initiated by my predecessor, Dr. Kent MacDonald. We know that a major factor preventing students from considering post-secondary education is a lack of financial support, which is why we endeavor to create opportunities for all qualified students to attend our university. We continue to work on this and other projects that will further improve our capacity for teaching and research excellence, and for offering unparalleled, experiential learning opportunities that don’t exist anywhere else in Canada. None of this happens without your support. Behind the facts and figures of dollars raised and goals met are real students, whose lives are changed by coming to StFX, and real people – some of whom are featured here – who gave so that those students could succeed. The size of the gifts differs; what remains constant is the desire to reassure our students that they are part of something bigger than themselves. Thank you for believing in the mission of StFX. Hail and Health!

THEY STAND ON OUR SHOULDERS StFX is in my blood. I wear my father’s X-ring, which he earned forty years before I graduated. It’s rare to go a day without thinking of him – just as it’s rare to go a day without running into a member of our family here on campus. My father always said StFX was a special place, and his legacy rests in his children and grandchildren who’ve all shared that same experience. A particular highlight of my job is getting to meet you, our incredible supporters, hearing your stories and your memories of your time at StFX. I take great joy in seeing your Xaverian spirit, which was so strong during my time as a student, helping to strengthen and support this new generation. One of the most significant contributions you make is promoting StFX to potential new students – and we can’t thank you enough for this. Our recruitment strategy relies heavily on word of mouth and usually, it’s an alumnus who has planted the original seed. Thank you. Your financial support is also critically important – especially when I meet with our current students and learn about the barriers they often face when attending university. Simply put, the costs to operate an institution like StFX are growing faster than the revenue generated from government and from tuition fees. This is unlikely to change in the future, which means that more is being asked of our students – and more of you, our alumni and friends. Our students still need us. They need us, whose lives have been underscored, punctuated, and amplified by our time at StFX. We stand on the shoulders of the graduates and the many friends of StFX who came before us. We reaped the benefits of their labour and their legacy, and I don’t know about you, but I feel a great sense of responsibility to ensure that my shoulders are strong enough for our successors to stand on, too. I challenge the StFX family to adopt the “every alumnus, any amount, every year” mentality. Donations don’t have to be large to make an impact. Consider some of the stories you’ll read in this report, like Merle Taylor, who has long funded a $500 annual scholarship for science students from Antigonish and Guysborough in honour of her late husband, Fred. Or Jeannine Deveau, who turned a $1000 loan from the Royal Bank into an $8 million scholarship program for African Nova Scotian and Indigenous students. These are things that had an enormous impact on StFX and our students, and also, have impacted our non-alumni supporters who wanted to know if our own alumni have supported their alma mater. This is what I hope for all of us: that we recognize the value of every one of our contributions, financial or otherwise. Hail and Health!

“EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE A CHANCE” When Merle McIntyre met Fred Taylor, in early 1943, she had just arrived in Montreal, fresh off a farm job fifteen miles north of her parents’ place in Manitoba. She’d worked all summer for three cents an hour,

This year, she made eight hundred bottles of pickles to sell at the family farm store across the road. And although Fred has passed on, Merle ensures his legacy is still strong. Almost immediately after his passing, she established the Fred L. Taylor Award, a bursary for StFX students enrolled in science from Antigonish or Guysborough counties. Merle has been so happy to hear from its recipients over the years. “Really,” she says, “Fred was so interested in young people having an education.” Merle knows what it’s like to struggle, and certainly knows the value of a dollar. But, she still somehow found $500 every year to help send a student to StFX. “I wanted every child to have a chance, regardless of what their parents had,” she says. “And Fred would have wanted it, too.”

CELEBRATING OUR DONORS We are pleased to present the StFX donor list for April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019. StFX is incredibly proud to offer our students life-changing research and learning experiences that simply aren’t possible at other Canadians universities. And, none of it would be possible without your support. In the following pages, we are pleased to present the names of our financial supporters, whose belief in the experience and academic mission of StFX strengthens our position as a premiere place of teaching, learning and research excellence.

To all of our valued donors, we thank you for your belief in the power of StFX!

Each year at our President’s Club gala, we are pleased to recognize donors who have achieved status as ten-year, twenty-year, and lifetime patrons of the President’s Club. On the following pages, please enjoy a selection of photos from this year’s gala, held in June 2019.
