Welcome to St George’s spring season and to a brochure that brings back under one roof the full gamut of concerts, from classical, jazz and folk to world, opera and new music – and not forgetting our very popular spoken word events. The message is simple: St George’s is here so that you can explore and enjoy high quality music across numerous different styles and traditions, and the hall is as much poised to thrill to the immortal chords of a classical piano masterpiece or traditional folk song as it is to the mellifluous flights of imagination that dance under the fingers of a legendary jazz saxophonist. With an unparalleled natural acoustic, intimate setting and warm atmosphere at their disposal, the creativity of musicians on stage knows no bounds, and every concert becomes a unique and enthralling experience for musicians and audiences alike. The opening notes of our 2013 season are played by a pianist of impeccable credentials, Dame Mitsuko Uchida, ushering in a gripping succession of concerts in which some of the greatest musicians of our age mingle with the cream of young talent, both national and local, and instrumental groups at the cutting edge
of acoustic music. Our musical reach extends back to the 16th and 17th centuries, reaching a climax with the launch in March of a new Bristol Baroque Festival that celebrates the riches of this period in great style; it crosses continents with visits from groups such as Anda Union from Inner Mongolia and the Dhoad Gypsies from Rajasthan; and it even boldly goes into space with a Journeys of Exploration talk. Our specially curated Filmic series boasts a rare solo performance by one of the best known contemporary composers, Philip Glass, while String Theory brings together country legends and local heroes with classical string quartets and all-plucking guitar and ukulele orchestras. With the whole season spread out before you, settle back and allow yourself to be inspired and enticed back to this exceptional venue time and time again. Suzanne Rolt Director

It unwraps an abundance of great music and artistry that flourished during the Baroque era, bringing it into the light of the modern day in a way that underscores its zest and glorious originality. The musical genius of JS Bach is a particular focus this year, with two of his greatest devotional works book ending the festival, but there are plenty of other programmes to grab attention, from a dramatic Handel and the Rival Queens offering from the Early Opera Company to an exploration of Spain’s Golden Age with The Harp Consort – and even a children’s concert that journeys from Rome to the rain forests of South America in the company of a magic pearl necklace!
BBC Radio 3 has been at our side from the very start of our ventures into this era of music-making, and it’s a particular pleasure that they will be broadcasting Radio 3 Live in Concert from St George’s from Monday 25 to Friday 29 March as well as creating a number of interviews and spoken word events to illuminate the Baroque, as part of a wider BBC Radio 3 Baroque season. Radio 3 presenter Tom Service will be introducing all the live broadcast concerts and helping to send the St George’s sound out around the country – so all that remains is for you to take your seat and ensure you’re on board for this celebratory festival.

An audience with Dame Mitsuko Uchida is one of the most intense pleasures St George’s can offer, the intimate space allowing us a vivid close-up of her artistry at work. Her choice of programme for tonight’s concert is typically profound, juxtaposing sublime examples of baroque, modern and romantic keyboard repertoire whose echoes and contrasts create an additional layer of meaning.

With just two EPs under their collective belts – His Young Heart and The Wild Youth – London-based act Daughter (Elena Tonra, Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguilella) have already established for themselves a dedicated following. Tonra’s pungent lyrics (“I want you so much/But I hate your guts” goes one couplet) are partnered by music that The Guardian described as “moody and electronicised”, before going on to compare Daughter to Bjork, Brian Eno, Coldplay and Joy Division, which is quite a list. The message is clear: don’t wait for the stadium tour, see Daughter now. ‘Masterfully blends fluttering, heart-onsleeve acoustic ballads with brooding, ambient soundscapes.’ VOGUE Recommended age 14+ ohdaughter.com £13.50 Promoted by Metropolis Music

The Bristol Classical Players’ Best of British season resumes with a mixture of the famous and unjustly neglected: Bridge’s early masterpiece (based on Keats’s poem) alongside Elgar’s towering late Cello Concerto. They are joined by BBC New Generation artist Leonard Elschenbroich, whose debut with the LPO last year created great excitement. The concert concludes with Vaughan Williams’ own favourite of his symphonies, a bustling and affectionate portrayal of Edwardian London.

It is no secret that artists the world over consider St George’s to be one of the truly great concert halls. Now, violinist Jack Liebeck has assembled a stellar line up of musicians to celebrate the venue in an inspirational evening of charitable music-making whose centrepiece will be Schubert’s masterly Octet in F. It’s a real delight to welcome back the Takács Quartet, widely recognised as one of the world’s great chamber ensembles. Their sell-out visit to us last year proved to be one of the highlights and real joys of the season. Performing Brahms’ two magnificent string quintets we know that lightning can strike twice, so don’t hesitate and join us for an audience with this finest of quartets who at once exude drama, warmth and good humour.
In what must surely be Bristol’s musical event of the year, Philip Glass – the world’s most celebrated contemporary composer – visits St George’s as part of Filmic to perform a solo piano programme including his celebrated Etudes. A still-evolving series begun in the mid-90s, recorded in 2003, and excerpted in numerous films and television programmes, the Etudes have, says Glass, a two-fold purpose: “First, to provide new music for my solo piano concerts. And second, for me to expand my piano technique with music that would enhance and challenge my playing. Hence the name Etudes, or ‘studies’. The result is a body of work that has a broad range of dynamic, tempo and emotion.”
The music of Haydn and Mozart takes centre stage for this visit from Europe’s leading Baroque orchestra, as ever under the direction of Harry Bicket. For this glistening summer programme they are joined by one of Baroque music’s most important and influential violinists, Fabio Biondi. His recordings of Baroque repertoire have become essential listening and it is equally essential that you claim a seat for what will undoubtedly be a thrilling evening.

Summer at St George’s Preview
After selling-out the Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall, what was left for the world renowned UOGB? That’s right: coming back to St George’s for a proper show. The all-singing, all-strumming ensemble of bonsai-guitarists return to the human-sized hall to run through an all-twanging repertoire that stretches from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana, with plenty of humorous detours along the way.
Our summer line-up is still taking shape, but here are a few key dates for your diary. Tickets are currently scheduled to go on sale the week commencing 11 Mar 2013...

As a registered charity, without support from our Friends we simply could not put on the breadth and quality of music that our audiences enjoy, nor run our award-winning Education and Community Programmes. And we would struggle to maintain the wonderful Grade II* listed building that is home to such incredible talent.
