Student life

Our location St George’s is based in Tooting, south-west London. Our students benefit from the best of both worlds – a friendly, local atmosphere with one of the world’s greatest capitals on their doorstep. London offers a wide range of opportunities to suit every taste, from world-renowned museums and cultural attractions, to famous shopping centres and internationallyacclaimed sporting arenas. Tooting itself is a thriving melting-pot and a fantastic place to live – well supplied with fresh food markets, good cheap restaurants and great bargain shopping. It benefits from a range of green spaces, offering a quiet change from the pace of London life. Tooting has excellent transport links, and is just 25 minutes from central London.

Accommodation Halls of residence Less than a mile from St George’s, our Horton Halls house 486 students in selfcatering single study/bedroom units with en-suite facilities, and shared kitchen, dining, and recreational areas. Wireless internet access is available throughout. There are laundry facilities on-site, secure storage for over 200 bikes, everything is closely monitored by CCTV, and the reception/security desk is open 24 hours a day. Horton Halls prices (2014): £140-150 per week Intercollegiate halls The University of London has eight intercollegiate halls of residence in central London, reserved for full-time students at University of London institutions. If you would prefer to live in one of these, please visit www.halls.london.ac.uk for more information. Private housing If you opt to live in rented accommodation, you’ll find there are a great many reasonably priced rooms, flats, maisonettes and houses available in and around Tooting. As St George’s is such a close community, shared flats and houses are often passed on from student group to student group. It’s never hard to find out what’s on offer, and most of our students end up living within a 15 to 20-minute walk. The University of London Housing Services maintain lists of registered private landlords and operate a contact list for students offering or wanting somewhere to live. To find out more, please visit www.housing.london.ac.uk.

Student Union The Student Union, run by and for our students, plays an important role in the life of St George’s. A wide range of clubs and societies, ranging from sports, arts, and charity to religious and cultural groups offer students the chance to relax, learn new skills and make new friends. You also become a full member of the National Union of Students, making you eligible for discounts at events, attractions, shops and theatres throughout the UK. For more information, visit www.sgsu.org.uk.

Health and fitness facilities Based at St George’s, the Robert Lowe Sports Centre is the main student sports facility. Housing a mixture of cardio training equipment and free weights, the centre also includes a multi-purpose sports hall and squash courts. Students are able to add use of the swimming pool at Tooting Leisure Centre, adjacent to St George’s, to their membership at extremely competitive rates. St George’s sports teams have a long tradition of playing their counterparts in university and medical school competitions, both at St George’s and at local outdoor venues.

Support at St George’s

The team that works here can help you with almost any aspect of student life: finances, setting up a bank account in the UK, accommodation, exams and assessment, appeals and complaints, careers, disability and wellbeing, registering with a doctor in the UK, and even finding your way around; whatever it takes to make you feel at home.

Visa and immigration advice If you are not an EU, EEA or Swiss National, you will need ‘entry clearance’ or permission to enter the UK under Tier 4 of the immigration system in order to study at St George’s, University of London, and this must be obtained before you travel. St George’s, University of London has Highly Trust Sponsor Status with the UK Home Office, and can sponsor students on a Tier 4 student visa for the duration of their studies. Prior to coming to the UK, you will be provided with support, guidance and the documentation that you will need to support your application for a student visa. For students who need to renew their visa during their studies, visa workshops will be held throughout the year. If you are unsure whether you need a student visa to undertake a degree at St George’s, please visit www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/doineedvisa. We also recommend reading the immigration leaflets published by the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) at www.ukcisa.org.uk. If you have any questions about the visa application process, please visit www.sgul.ac.uk/international/immigration-and-visa-advice or email visaadvice@sgul.ac.uk.

Hardship funding An international student hardship fund is available for full-time international students experiencing financial hardship. The funding comes in the form of a non-repayable grant or an interest-free short term loan, depending on circumstances. The fund cannot help with paying for tuition fees. It is designed to help students who are in financial hardship due to unexpected circumstances outside of their control, such as financial hardship caused by major currency fluctuations or unexpected family circumstances.

International Student Society All international students are automatically members of our International Student Society, which runs a welcome weekend for new international students every year, and hosts Christmas and Chinese New Year dinners and other events or trips throughout the year. The International Student Society also runs an international ‘Buddy’ scheme, assigning new international students to a ‘Buddy’ or mentor from an older year.

International Students House All our international students have free membership of this social, cultural and recreational centre in central London. Open all year round, it’s a great place to meet people from other London universities in a safe, relaxed environment.

International lunches We arrange a lunch for all of our international students every month, providing regular opportunities for you to get together and enjoy a (free) meal.

Careers service As you train you should always be looking ahead, and part of our job is to look ahead with you. Our careers service works to support current students and recent graduates, and help everyone find and maintain the healthcare career of their dreams. Whether you wish to work in the UK on graduation, or return to practise in your home country, or another country, we will offer support in getting you there.

sgul.ac.uk St George’s, University of London is the UK’s only university dedicated to medical and health sciences education, training and research. Sharing a clinical environment with a major London teaching hospital, our innovative approach to education results in well-rounded, highly-skilled clinicians, scientists, and health and social care professionals. As a constituent college of the University of London our students have access to a wide range of facilities and services beyond the campus in Tooting. We hope this prospectus opens a window onto who we are and what we do. In short, you can undertake a specialist degree here on a hospital site in a thriving London location, leading, we trust, to an extraordinary future in the health professions.
