Gold Rush: Paying Top Price for Your Unwanted Gold, Silver, Platinum and Coins Johnson City, TN. --- Conveniently located in North Johnson City across from Kroger and next to Java Hut, Gold Rush is locally owned by Jeremy Clemens. “We buy gold, silver, platinum and coins of any karat, condition or age,” Clemens said. “We pay top price. Cash on the spot.” Some of the many items that Clemens will purchase from you include: watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, Gold Rush owner Jeremy Clemens broaches, pins, and he is also a coin dealer. “I guess we all have some old jewelry and coins lying around that we don’t wear anymore and really don’t have any use for. Why not turn those items into instant cash?” Clemens said. Gold Rush is open Monday through Saturday and they even have a drive through window for your convenience. Clemens will also help coordinate your gold party and pay you for hosting it in the privacy of your home or office. “You can call and make an appointment and I will come to your house or office and evaluate your gold, silver or platinum,” Clemens explained. “And we also buy and deal in coins and coin collections.” Clemens and his family have over 34 years of experience in the business. Other family members own the Ideal Cards & Coins Company, in Ohio. “I’m a local businessman that you can deal with face-to-face instead of mailing your

gold or jewelry off to people you don’t know and may not be getting the best deal for what you are selling,” he said matter-of-factly. Clemens and his family live in Washington County and he is an active coach of the Junior Topper football team and he also coaches baseball, T-Ball, and soccer. “You might recognize me on the field,” he said with a laugh. “I enjoy coaching year-round and it gives me time to spend with my kids.” Jeremy is married to Melissa and they have three children: Maddie, 7; Josh, 11; and Joey 4. They attend St. Mary’s Church in Johnson City. “I really enjoy working with the public every day and giving people the best deal possible when they are selling their gold, silver, platinum or coins,” he added. “I invite the readers of Out ‘N About Magazine to come by get the best deal possible on their gold, silver, platinum or coins. “WHO REALLY IS STEVE GRINDSTAFF?” By Ashley Grindstaff Many people around always want to know, who really is the man behind the dark sunglasses and pin stripped suits, that calls himself “The Boss?” You want my honest opinion? Well, “The Boss?” we’ll get to that in a minute. But, I can tell you who Steve Grindstaff is. He’s a bluntly honest, down to earth, compassionate, driven, humble, hard-working, and benevolent man. You may be asking, “Are you talking about the same Steve Grindstaff that I am thinking of?” Yes I am. In fact, many people don’t quite understand [or] yet even know my husband, Steve Grindstaff. If you have a few minutes, sit back and I will tell you the real story how he came to be “The Boss.” Born and raised in Elizabethton, Tennessee, Steven Edward Grindstaff was born on November 13 (don’t think I am going to tell you what year, that’s still a mystery) to Thomas and Edna Grindstaff. Thomas was an Elizabethton Police officer and Edna a textile worker. The two made ends meet to provide for their family. As a young boy, Steven relied on his family for hand-me-downs and grew up mainly at his maternal-grandmothers home place where Sunday meals where a family tradition. As he grew older, he realized that wearing hand-me-downs with holes in his shoes and clothes just too big wasn’t what he

had in mind. . . especially if he wanted to attract girls. At the age of thirteen, he worked two jobs: one as a paperboy, getting up at 4:00am before each day of school, and the other mowing lawns. He was making more money than his parents. He got a taste of what a better life could be if you just believed and worked hard. School came very easy for Steven, never opening a book, making good grades and playing football. Did Steven ever get in trouble? The stories I could share would fill a book! With his very charismatic charm, he could sell ice to an Eskimo including his teachers. Football was his love. Once he knew that he could make something of himself, he put his whole being into becoming the best at it and he did. Steven Grindstaff would become Steve Grindstaff in high school, with his best friend, Larry Counts, right beside him on the field; the two have stayed life-long friends. With the highest football honors one can receive, Steve Grindstaff signed with the East Tennessee State University’s football program under Coach Robert Bell. Steve loved the game of football and one thing about his passion tells me you wouldn’t want to be on the other side of the line facing him because he played to knock you down so you wouldn’t come back up. There’s his drive and competitiveness kicking-in and that enthusiasm would later make him a car mogul. During his senior year on winter break, he decided to take a part-time job at Bunton Chevrolet in Elizabethton and that decision would change his destiny forever. In the one month working as a part-time salesman, he sold 42 cars and made more money than he would as a teacher combined with coaching football. Dropping out of college, with only one semester left to

graduate, Steve had no regrets because he saw his future in the car business. As quickly as he stepped foot on the car lot, he quickly obtained a “no-nonsense” attitude which can easily be mistaken as arrogance. The principles he learned in the game of football would be the same philosophy he adopted in the business world. He quickly became one of the top-selling salesmen in the entire State of Tennessee, earning the trust from his customers, who would come back time and time again to trade cars bringing along family and friends. Steve still has those same customers today that will tell you funny stories about him selling cars back then. Upon successfully achieving his goals in the car industry, he longed for more challenges. With his natural born selling skills, he wanted to try the real estate scene. He, along with Rab Summers and Richard Booth, developed Woodstone Condominiums. Steve became the sole real estate agent in the partnership and soon became a $100 million dollar real estate producer! His other love of selling cars convinced him that it was time to go back to Bunton Chevrolet and make them an offer to purchase the store. One thing Steve never liked when he was selling cars was, “Well we need to ask Bunton Jr. and Mr. Bunton’s permission for that.” Steve never liked to ask for permission. After convincing both parties, Steve Grindstaff bought Bunton Chevrolet in 1987. As sole owner, “The Boss” was born. Later in 1990, Grindstaff Chrysler and Dodge were added to the Elizabethton location, as well as Jeep in 1994 and he added KIA in 1996. National Nursing Home Week: Spotlight on Appalachian Christian Village In August of 1954, five men from Downtown Christian Church came together to plant a seed for a place for people to age with dignity. A corporation was formed by the name of Christian Home For The Aged and the dream of Appalachian Christian Village was born. It was not until March of 1965 that fifty men came together to pull a plow to break ground on the dream and Appalachian Christian Village took her first breath. In February of 1966 an independent living wing was completed and the first resident moved in. The dedication of the Health Care Center took place in June of 1966. The year 2011 finds the Health Care Center celebrating 45 years of ministry and service. You have to wonder sometimes if those five men had any idea the growth that would take place from the seed that was planted. Appalachian Christian Village is now home to two independent living campuses for a total of 182 independent living residences, two assisted living campuses for a total of 90 apartments, and a skilled and intermediate health care center with a total of 103 beds. If you want to see true heartfelt ministry and caring all you need to do is to visit the Health Care Center at Appalachian Christian Village. The evidence of ministry is visible through the lifetime dedication of our employees. Gwen Hendrix, Senior Director of Health Care Services has served as part of the ACV team for the past 25 years. Gwen Hendrix and Director of Nursing Diana Campbell work together to ensure comfort and compassion for all of our 103 health care residents. By providing our skilled and intermediate residents around the clock care, ACV creates both a structure and security that enables Residents to direct their physical and emotional resources toward optimal wellness—and their families to focus on offering the support, encouragement, and love that is the best medicine of all. Our vision is to reflect Christ’s love by being the premier regional provider of quality senior living.

Behind the Scenes at Barter: Disney’s Beauty & The Beast Abingdon, VA. --- Those beautiful and unique costumes you see the actors wearing during Barter Theatre productions don’t just come from a rack at WalMart or JC Penny. Hardly. Hours upon hours are spent planning, designing, developing and creating those elaborate costumes. Recently, Out ‘N About Magazine paid a visit to the Barter Theatre Costume Shop to see first-hand how the costumes for Disney’s Beauty & The Beast are constructed. Ryan Fischer, wig and makeup designer is making “a record 80 hair pieces” for Beauty & The Beast and he prefers a more realistic look versus a cartoon impression on some of the characters faces as has been done in other productions. “We using a Trompe L’oeio effect which literally means ‘fool the eye’” he reported. “The process is also used in architecture and in the painting of fake scenery and doors that appear to be real.” Fischer explained that Beauty & the Beast “became a classic so fast” and he wanted to make it fresh again. “We’re going a little bit further [in his department] being a little more original and making it fun and interesting. That involves a lot of problem solving; for example, we’re making the clock look more like a clock by adding the numbers 12, 9, 6 and 3 to his face making it more authentic.” Indeed. And if that’s just one of hundreds of items Fischer is creating. For a more realistic hairline on the characters he ties between 5700 and 6500 hair to each hair piece and 600 per mustache. His process eliminates a lot of time for the actors in make-up whereby in a past similar show the main actors might spend over two hours in make-up alone. “[Making] wigs is fun and formidable and I like making them with more personality,” he said. “And, for example, the salt and pepper wigs come complete with a blonde curled S for the salt and a jet black P in front for pepper. Talk about a feel for the realistic!” Fischer, a native of Willowick, Ohio and his colleagues don’t have the luxury of working one just one show at a time. “I’m working on all the shows all the time,” he said with a smile. “If you see

Page 12

a wig in a show you can bet that I’ve touched it!” Fischer loves his job. After all, he’s been doing make-up for 33 years. Adrienne Webber is Barter Theatre’s costume shop manager. She said having been involved in a previous Beauty & The Beast production taught her what to do and what not to do this time around. “We’ve refined the production,” she said. The Sarasota, Florida native says costuming is “very time consuming.” “I go to Lowes for inspiration,” she said with a laugh. “For example, take the clock for instance. How’s that going to work and look? It’s a process of design after we receive the concept from the director. There’s a lot of brainstorming.” Bernard Fitzgerald, Costume Crafts Artisan, added, “You use enchanted objects on people . . .taking inanimate objects and they become human-like [the wolf’s face for instance]. “That’s the magic of theatre!” Fisher, Webber and Jenkins do in fact spend a lot of time in Lowes, Wal-Mart, flea markets, and a variety of other places to hone their creative juices. Colored hot glue works well as pastries while plumbing tubes may be used in the support of a costume covered by a shower curtain. Rubber water bottles also come in handy as do many sizes and varieties of gloves. Sketches and drawings are seen all over the costume “stations” where a lot of sewing, clamping, gluing, ironing and painting takes place. Safety is also always a concern. “Some of the larger objects can literally take someone’s head off so we put a lot of thought in planning and allowing for the scope of an actor’s [costume] size on stage. They learn what they can do and not do while in costume,” Webber explained. “For some actors in Beauty & The Beast, they can’t see their own feet,” [due to the size of the costume]. “And, because some costumes are so hot for the actors to wear we will place ice packs underneath.” Interestingly, all of the materials used in Beauty & The Beast will be recycled and used in other future productions. Non-profit theatre demands it.

‘Fear’ fourth in popular Dillard series Author Scott Pratt has written himself a true friend. Part autobiographical and part alter ego, attorney Joe Dillard is the central character in Pratt’s popular series of novels that commenced with An Innocent Client. Reasonable Fear, the fourth book in the Dillard series, is now available at Amazon.com – both in trade paperback and for the Kindle™ electronic reader – and locally at Mr. K’s on North Roan Street in Johnson City. Dillard has been good to Pratt, as the author now basks in the warm success of well over 100,000 books sold worldwide in five languages, award nominations and enthusiastic praise from reviewers and fellow writers. Though it is only a few weeks into the release cycle, already hundreds of readers are buying the new book and Pratt says it is very gratifying to know that there are so many people who want to spend their time with his stories and characters. “That is a feeling so special that it is hard to describe. To know there are people who want to read what you write, and who enjoy what you’ve created. Sometimes you catch yourself being surprised all over again, and happily so,” Pratt said. The Dillard series highlights the trials and battles, both personal and professional, of an East Tennessee attorney who struggles to maintain his equilibrium and decency as he confronts the insidious corrosion of greed, graft and indifference on his beloved legal profession. Pratt’s many years as an attorney prove an invaluable asset, and his cleverly crafted characters frame the stage for a rarely seen, in-depth look at the American legal system. The story “I wanted to write a story that

Page 14

explores the fine line between legal and right and take it to an extreme. That theme has become a recurring part of my work. It’s something I don’t consciously think of when I begin a novel, but I seem to want to explore it because it keeps coming up,” Pratt said. “A judge once accused me of having a problem with authority, but that’s not really true. I have a problem with people who abuse authority. I have a problem with how authority is created, who it goes to, and how they handle it. “There are vain, foul and jealous people, and just because someone has been elected or appointed to a position of power, it doesn’t also follow that they are necessarily going

to become good because of it. “Now, on the other side of that, if you look at the law, the tenants of the law, all the way back to its origins, and the Ten Commandments, for example, you find ‘thou shall not kill.’ Well, yeah you can, under certain circumstances. Which lends itself to interpretation. And that takes you to who is doing the interpreting, and how they see the absolutes and the nuances of the law. “In Reasonable Fear, I take a very tightly bound set of circumstances which are imposed upon the lead character, Joe Dillard, who I think is a very good person. And he is confronted with the terrible quandary of whether he must technically break the law.

“This leads to a lot of questions that really don’t have pat answers, and that’s what occupies my mind for the hundreds of hours while I write a story. “From the president of the United States to a clerk in the county courthouse, authority figures have or create their own little fiefdom. It is their choice whether to treat people kindly and fairly, or indifferently and rudely. It comes down to personal choices. “Dillard doesn’t really know what he is. He thinks he does. His goals are fairly simple and conventional, almost innocent. He wants to love and be loved. He wants to take care of his family. He wants to spend his life doing something that is ‘good.’

“He’s chosen law, which, when you think about it, is about as complex as it gets. If you look at the history of ‘law and order,’ you find a long, long list of atrocities committed by humans who thought they were doing the ‘right’ thing. “The most prominent examples that come to my mind are the trial and murder of Jesus by the Romans and and the burning of Joan of Arc by the French priests. It wasn’t that long ago that owning a slave was legal in this country. Hanging a slave was legal. “So that’s the backdrop on the canvas on which I try to paint Joe Dillard and these stories. Steve Grindstaff n Continued from 3 has given back to his community for the blessings of his profound success. He realized the true importance of football and the principles that taught him the fundamentals of life. He felt the community’s future leaders would be coming from Elizabethton High School’s football program. Thus, he began providing pre-games meals and new uniforms in an effort to give back to a program he loved. He didn’t forget about the students who were academically successful either. He started the Carter County Awards Banquet, providing meals for the students and families along with trophies and scholarship money for students with earning the highest GPAs. Steve really doesn’t like to talk about what he does for kids or the community because it comes from his heart and his philosophy has always been, “When it comes from the heart you

don’t talk about it.” One probably wouldn’t think or know what an emotional person Steve is. But remember he came basically from nothing and has earned and achieved everything he has. . . all on his own. In the business world competition and criticism is hard to accept sometimes. But while Steve maybe as tough as nails in business but he is also a giving person. Many times he has discovered someone in need or learned about a situation where someone was trying their hardest to make something of themselves but was having a tough time at it. And many times he has been the first to step in to help without anyone knowing about it. That’s Steve Grindstaff. From humble beginnings, one can have it all if you just believe in yourself, continue to work hard and stay focused.

Burnsville, North Carolina

This month’s Day Trip takes us an hour away from Johnson City to the quaint village of Burnsville, North Carolina. Surprisingly, Burnsville’s old downtown is filled full of eye-catching store fronts offering a variety of wares and services. Shops seem to glide into one another, while the entire area is anchored by a beautiful Town Square Park across from the county courthouse. Shop owners not only offer a wide variety of foods for every mealtime, but their shops also offer visitors the opportunity to purchase gifts, jewelry, quilts, vintage furniture, lamps, books, clothing, and antiques. The downtown district is alive with over thirty shops and businesses and over a dozen different places to eat. All of these facts may seem staggering in a town of only 1,700 people. While there are 18,000 folks county-wide, Burnsville’s downtown attractions are still quite impressive. There is a well-established arts and crafts business here as well as several vacation rental establishments that flourish in warmer weather. At last count, over 30 businesses advertised their specialty in arts and crafts, housing everything from pottery to glass and an army of crafter makers. There is a school for craft making and a gentleman who fashions ornamental art from metal. Also of interest are several “country stores” that can have you spending hours just looking around. Walking through the downtown district is fun and relaxing. Burnsville, like Erwin, Tennessee even has an

Page 16

old movie theatre that plays first-run movies. Burnsville is the County Seat and the anchor to Yancey County home of Mount Mitchell some 50 miles down the road. Mount Mitchell, standing at 6,684 feet, is the highest peak in the eastern United States. Visitors frequently stop off in Burnsville on their journey there or to the lush Pisgah National Forest or the panoramic Blue Ridge Parkway. Rich in American history, Burnsville is named after Otway Burns, North Carolina’s foremost son in the War of 1812. In March of 1834, John Bailey conveyed 100 acres of land for the county seat of this new county, which had been formed from sections of Burke and Buncombe counties. A statue of Burns stands in the center of the town’s public square donated by the captain’s grandson. The inscription reads in part: “Otway Burns, North Carolina’s Foremost Son in the War of 1812, for him this town is named --- He Guarded Well Our Seas, Let Our Mountains Honor Him.” The short drive over to Burnsville will have you doubting that you ever left Tennessee. Just like in our region, the folks of Burnsville live with a conscious awareness of the rugged and gentle beauty of the land. One Chamber of Commerce brochure says [paraphrasing]: “Some things you have to look elsewhere to find. Crowds, for instance. Flashy neon and night life to match. Traffic jams, urban blight, serious crime. Polluted air and tainted water. If that’s your preference, better try somewhere else.”

Newcomers. Van Brocklin & Stout. Join Johnson City Commission Johnson City, TN. --- In a light turnout political rookies Ralph Van Brocklin and Clayton Stout won seats on the Johnson City Commission on April 27th. Voters decided not to return Marcy Walker to City Hall for a second term. Former Mayor and City Commissioner Steven Darden chose not to seek another term. The upheaval of the city’s senior citizens community upset with not receiving what they content had been a promised stand-alone Senior Center is believed to be [by many political pundits] a contributing factor in the results. The duo joins Commissioner Jeff Banyas who easily won re-election to a second term. In the race for school board seats, Jenny Brock, Tim Belisle and Lottie Ryans each won four-year terms. Former City Commissioner and School Board member Dr. Ricky Mohon was 4th and Carver Recreation Center Manager Herb Greenlee rounded out the field. Official results saw Van Brocklin as top vote getter with 3,087 votes followed

by Banyas with 3,066 and Stout with 2,559. Walker, who is said to be preparing for law school tallied 2,315 votes. Stout told reporters his door-to-door campaign effort paid off and told News Channel 11 in an April 27th interview that he “would be a watch dog for the tax payers,” frequently bringing questions to the table. Mayor Jane Myron said she looked forward to working and getting to know the two new commissioners. But in a question concerning the senior center she pointed out, “Johnson City is not a one-issue town.” Votes for the school board seat winners were as follows: Brock: 2,947 Ryans: 2,748 Belisle: 2,343 It was an embarrassing voter turnout as only about 11,000 voters cast ballots out of nearly 37,000 eligible. Van Brocklin and Stout join Banyas, Mayor Myron and Commissioner Phil Carriger on the city panel. Myron and Carriger’s terms expire in May 2013. It’s too early to tell whether they will seek re-election.

Courtyard by Marriott honors local hotel Johnson City, TN. --- When hotel general manager Steve Bales took the reins at the new Courtyard by Marriott he intended it to become the premier place to stay in the region. Last month, he and his team’s hard work paid off as the local hotel received the prestigious Platinum Award at Marriott International’s Annual General Managers Conference attended by over 800 people. The Platinum Award is given to the top 10% of hotels in the country with the highest Guest Service Scores. The event was dubbed the “2011 GM Palooza: The Comeback Tour” and Johnson City’s Courtyard by Marriott was honored as the “Courtyard Rock Star.” That notoriety is given to a hotel that ranks #1 in more than three categories on Guest Services Scores. Receiving four #1’s in guest services makes Johnson City’s Courtyard by Marriott the highest ranking hotel in the brand in the United States.

MarketingMel Takes Top Awards for Eldridge Community Relations/Social Media and Buffalo, New York Realtor’s Web Site

(Johnson City, Tenn.) MarketingMel, a marketing, public relations and social media strategies firm based in Johnson City, Tenn. captured five awards at the Tri-Cities TN/ VA Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America’s annual awards dinner that was held April 5 in Kingsport. The firm won two “Awards of Excellence,” the highest award given, for community relations on the Dan Eldridge campaign and for the creation of a Realtor’s web site in Williamsville, New York, a suburb of Buffalo. MarketingMel’s public relations strategy for the successful Dan Eldridge campaign for Washington County Mayor involved a series of neighborhood gatherings throughout Johnson City. MarketingMel orchestrated the gather-

ings with a number of well known community leaders who offered up their homes for the events. MarketingMel took photos of the hosts with Dan and posted these along with party photos on the Elect Eldridge Facebook page which was fed to his twitter account. She also conducted video interviews which she posted to his Facebook and YouTube accounts. “This was a key way to build buzz for a candidate who had not previously served in elected office,” says Mary Ellen Miller, President and CEO of MarketingMel. “I’m grateful for Dan Eldridge’s confidence in MarketingMel. It was great to be recognized by the judges for the social media and P.R. combination.” “MarketingMel helped set the standard for all future county mayor races across the state of Tennessee,” says Eldridge. “I believe the neighborhood gatherings, which involved getting to know people where they live, in their homes and neighborhoods, played a large role in the campaign’s positive outcome. Furthermore, it has helped me in my new role as Mayor when I work with many of the same people.” MarketingMel took another “Award of Excellence,” the P.R.S.A.’s top prize, for Kim Addelman and Ron Remollino’s web site, http://villagehomesales.com. MarketingMel,

in collaboration with Jeffery Moore created the eye-appealing site that features large, sliding photos of village of Williamsville landmarks such as its waterfalls, and homes that Addelman is showcasing. MarketingMel brought interactivity to the site in many ways including the addition of social networking, Kim’s blog and home seller tips. “MarketingMel helped me shape my branding strategy,” says Addelman. “The web site is not only visually appealing but it’s easy for me to maintain. I’ve gotten leads through the web site and social media channels MarketingMel created, that I never had before.” Other entries winning “Awards of Quality” were: Dan Eldridge party invitation, the MarketingMel web site (http://marketingmel. com) and the Elect Eldridge web site (http:// electeldridge.com). Involved in the creation of those entries were: Theresa Bellamy and Pip Printing, Jeffery Moore and Tim McLeod. About MarketingMel: MarketingMel provides innovative marketing, public relations and social media strategies for business professionals. The firm is led by Mary Ellen Miller, who started the company two years ago. Miller, who has an M.B.A. from E.T.S.U. and a communications degree from

Mary Ellen Plubell Cornell, has made a career as a professional communicator. Miller was a member of the founding board of the Tri-Cities TN/VA chapter of the P.R.S.A. and served again on the board last year. She speaks regularly to business and educational groups on the subject of social media for business. Johnson City, TN. --- Daytime Tri-Cities show producer Toby Laek became interested in films as far back as 4th grade when he and a friend began making home-movies with a horror theme. “My friend Ben and I used a camcorder to make scary movies,” he reflected. “We’d make up stories and use fake stuff. . .like ketchup for blood. I’ve always had an interest in movies and the way in which they are made and produced,” he said. A month after college graduation Laek landed a job in the production department at News Channel 11. After completing about seven years in that department he moved over to become the producer of the highly popular morning show Daytime Tri-Cities starring Amy Lynn and Morgan King when the show expanded to an hour. In August he will complete his second year as the show’s producer. When in-house movie critic JJ Jeffers moved to Atlanta, Laek volunteered to step in as movie critic booking himself every Friday on Daytime. “Good news if we need to bump someone [because of time restraints] I’m always the first to go,” he said with a chuckle. Laek said a routine visit to TriCities 7 Cinema on a film studies trip landed him a free pass to review films. “I told them how much I enjoyed their theatre and the next thing I know they invited me to see recent releases with no strings attached,” he said. “I usually go every week frequently my wife goes as well because she loves movies just as much as I do.” Fellow News Channel 11 co-worker meteorologist Rob Williams says Laek is a movie reviewer “pro.” “He does research on the latest films and comes up with information most people wouldn’t know or think about concerning a recently released film,” Williams said. “He does his homework and he knows what he’s talking about. You may not agree with his review but he stays focus and doesn’t let his personal feelings get in the way which is important if you are going to be a credible film critic.”

Page 28

Laek confirmed Williams’ take on his film reviewing process. “I don’t watch or read reviews prior to seeing a film that I’m planning to review,” he revealed. “I thoroughly outline the plot and analyze the directing, writing and acting. That process allows me to offer and informed and honest review.” Somewhat surprisingly, Laek said two of his favorite films this year were [the somewhat dark] Black Swan starring Nattily Portman and The Fighter starring Marc Walberg and Christen Bale, who earned an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. He didn’t mince words by calling The King’s Speech “overrated.” Adding, “It didn’t deserve the Oscar [for Best Picture]. Sometimes studios compile a list of things necessary to win the Oscar and they did it with The King’s Speech. . .a period piece, wellknown actors, great sets and beautiful costumes. “I just didn’t think it deserved it.” Laek calls Alfred Hitchcock the greatest director ever and that mod-

He said there were too many sequels offered in today’s market but explained why. “It cost so much for a studio to make and produce a film that one miss could lead to bankruptcy. So they produce [say] G. I. Joe 2 knowing

it’ll take in a huge amount of money because of the name and that enables them to take a chance on another project.” What’s Laek looking forward to viewing and reviewing this summer? “I’m looking forward to Cars 2 and the next Batman film.” Turn down the lights and pass the buttered popcorn.

Country Club Bar & Grill Spotlight: Thomas Taylor & The Nightshade Band Bristol, TN. --- On a recent Saturday night, Thomas Taylor steps out on the stage at the Country Club Bar & Grill strums one cord and the dance floor immediately fills up.

“I really don’t know how that happens,” he says with a laugh. “Me and my band just aim to please and if you like country, I guess you can say we’re your band.” The Honaker, Virginia native could very well be a recording artist in Nashville but that didn’t really pan out to where he wanted to be. “I tried the Nashville scene and had plenty of opportunities but I’ve got four kids including four year-old twins so being here became more important that chasing a dream in Nashville,” he said with a grin. “Me and my band are solidly booked all over the Tri-Cities and I have a day job in construction so I’m really happy and fortunate with that situation.” Influenced by the likes of Conway Tritty, Elvis, Keith Whitley, Ray Charles and Bob Seger it is evident in his performance that the powerful voice of Thomas Taylor is centered around entertaining people. He has been involved in music since winning a talent show at an early age and recording Bluegrass tunes at 14 years-old in Swords Creek, Virginia with friends. “We know our fans and supporters come to see us to have a good time and we do our best to deliver,” he said recently. “The County Club Bar & Grill is home to me and my band [The Nightshade Band] and Andy and Michelle [club management] have been very good to me. This is a place unlike others in the

May 2011

region that give us the opportunity to play our music . . .pure country.” Knocking on the door of being 40 years-old soon, Taylor reflects on what is important to him in [still] a long career already in the music industry. “Obviously at the end of the night it is still a business. That’s why you always hear me say ‘Tip your bartenders and waitresses.’ Everybody has to make a living. I’m most proud of the fact that we choose to present a personable atmosphere. We want everyone to have a good time. And, we love to perform and want everyone to have an opportunity to request songs they want to hear. The Country Club Bar & Grill enables us to do that. It is just a great place to Taylor’s day job for the last six enjoy yourself and as an entertainer years has been working with his Dad I think it is one of the best places in at the CNX Gas Company. He says the entire area to perform.”

the steady pay check enables him to perform several nights a week. “My [and the bands] involvement in music is fun and not work,” he offered. “We are very mindful that the people come and pay for us to perform. So we give it our all. We’re booked pretty much throughout the week through the summer at festivals and bars, which I don’t like that name because places like Country Club Bar & Grill is really restaurant and entertainment facilities and not a ‘bar,’ so-to-speak. The Country Club Bar & Grill is a fantastic place to come with friends and family and have a good time.” Thomas calls his venture into the music industry, “a stress reliever.” “I credit my band members with

all of us staying grounded even though I did the Nashville route for several months and had the opportunity to participate in a record deal. But at the end of the day, I guess you really have to decide if that is right for you. For me, I just enjoy playing at local event and establishments and being able to be involved in family stuff. The bright lights are there. . .I’m just not blinking.” Thomas Taylor Band Factoid: Thomas Taylor: Lead Singer; Guitar. Dave Taylor, Bass. Darrell Compton, Rhythm Guitar. how to pace a good story, and the character development that is so important to it. “The downside is that it’s harder to read now. I find myself harder to please, and having less patience for something not done well. I’m guess I’ve become much more critical. “I don’t read my genre. Most of what I read is classical literature. A lot of Twain. Rather than read something that is bad, I’ll reread something that is good. “Economy of words is not a problem for me. The average in the trade is 90,000 words and I have trouble getting that many. Usually I get to 70, maybe 80,000 words. I don’t like contrivances, coincidences, and I don’t like to preach. When you avoid those things, it’s difficult to get a lot of words. “My favorite books are told through the eyes of young, innocent protagonists that are forming opinions about the world. The authors don’t seem to take themselves that seriously. They’re deadly serious about what they’re doing, but they’re not heavy-handed with it. “There are a whole lot of good things about people, too, and there are so many writers, who explore that in different ways, some of them better than others. “I have my prejudices and biases, and I’m sure they come through in my work, though I try to avoid too much of that. But also things that I value, and I know that comes through in the characters too.”

characters that come into play are a mixture of people I’ve met, people I’ve read about, people I’ve imagined. I try to make all of the characters interesting in one way or another. I have a sort of warped sense of humor, a bit on the black side, and I think a lot of my minor characters reflect that.” The writer Pratt’s favorite books are To Kill a Mockingbird, Huckleberry Finn and Catcher in the Rye. “All of them are fairly simple stories told economically. The authors don’t use a a lot of adjectives and they use even fewer adverbs. They get to the point, and once the point is made, they go on to something else. “I love Mark Twain’s quote: ‘Regarding adjectives: when it doubt, leave it out.’ I like Elmore Leonard’s philosophy that says writers of fiction should leave out the parts that people tend to skip. “I read a great deal of fiction, and find myself put off more and more by contrived plots and violence. For the most part, I like and am amused by people, and I’ve found the majority of people I’ve met to honest and quirky. Quirky is fun. It makes good entertainment, and I enjoy it. I hope other people do, too.” Now in his 50s, Pratt says he feels he’s “finally found a niche. “I’ve just finished my fifth novel. If you’d told me 20 or 30 years ago that I’d write novels, I would have told you that you’re crazy. I didn’t believe I’d have the patience for it. “But I’ve learned that I have more patience than I realized, and I think my niche is to entertain. I’d like to think I enlighten at the same time, but that part of it is subjective. Some people like my work and some people don’t. I can’t control that. What I can do is try to keep writing stories that I like, and hope that other folks like them.” Pratt says it’s very much a learning process. “You get an idea in your mind for how you want everything to turn out. Then you have to have the patience to go back and set everything up so that it turns out the way you want it, but that it’s not contrived. “It takes a whole lot of thinking and you have to be willing to tear out blocks of text when they don’t work. The beginning and the end of a novel are not all that difficult, but the middle requires a great deal of patience, and plain old determination, to put literally hundreds of hours into creating a story. “You have to make all of these decisions along the way. You learn that the decisions you make early on in the novel impact what happens later and, if you make the wrong decisions, it costs you a lot of wasted time. “I think that discourages a lot of writers. It can be very frustrating. But it can also be very rewarding when the story finally comes together.” Pratt says he will never forget the moment that he held a bound copy of his first novel. “It’s really something, a remark-

Page 32

able moment. I think I’m more mature about it now – there’s a ‘been there, done that’ element to it. But there is a great deal of satisfaction holding a bound novel that has my name on it. “It’s similar to any profession. When you plead a case in a courtroom for the first time, when a doctor conducts his first operation, when a performer sings onstage for the first time. You’d have to be pretty unfeeling not to be moved by that. “And the more you learn about it, the more confident you become, but also the more you want to learn about it. I have more confidence now about my ability to construct a novel and tell a story in a certain way. I’m always looking for certain devices, and working to be better at it.” The reader Pratt says he reads “a lot more than I used to. But I read very selectively now, differently than I used to. “I don’t read for pleasure now, though I get a lot of pleasure out of it. I read to learn. I don’t know that it’s necessary to read a great deal when writing. In fact, other writers say they won’t read when they’re writing. And there’s an obvious danger in that is, especially when you read something you really like, you can wind up parroting the style. “But, over time, I have evolved into my own style. I have developed confidence and I feel I have learned how to craft and

The printing Self-publishing is fast becoming an accepted, even favored method for authors to deliver their creations to the reading public. “It’s a David versus Goliath story, to be sure, with David having no arms to fire the slingshot,” Pratt says with a laugh. “He might figure out how to fire it with his toes, but the odds are against him. “I think the changes in the industry have ebbed. What publishers have done is lower the price of hardbacks for popular authors but raised the price of Kindle books. If you want to buy a bestselling author on Kindle, it’ll cost you $12.99 – that seems to be the price they’ve settled on over the past couple of years. “There are no productions costs and negligible distribution costs. The big publishing houses have figured it out. They’re still making their money, and they will continue to do so.” Pratt says it is all too easy to get caught up in publishing minutia but “the important thing is, and will remain, creating a good story with believable characters. Then trust your readers, and have faith in them.” Happily, the writer’s craftsmanship is in full flower. He has already completed the preliminary draft of another stand-alone novel, and plans to write another in the Dillard series. (For more information about Reasonable Fear and the Joe Dillard series of novels, and to order a copy, visit Pratt’s website: at www.scottprattfiction.com or www.amazon. com; or e-mail the author: scott@scottprattfiction.com)

Alta Cucina Spring Wine Tasting Event Simply Delightful Johnson City, TN. --- For Chef Moe’s annual spring wine tasting event held April 28th at Alta Cucina Italian Restaurant [Roan Street across from the IGA shopping Center] one word sums it up: Excellent! Paring grilled lobster tail with Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Chardonnay kicked the night off just fine. Next came an equally tasty grilled halibut complimented by a glass of Con Creek Herrick Red. At this juncture, it’s important to point out that new friendships were beginning to form as the crowd, many of whom didn’t know one another, enjoyed spirited conversations and laughter was prevalent throughout the eatery. And just when you thought you were full out comes stuffed chicken and newly filled glasses of Chateau Ste. Michelle Canoe Ridge Merlot. This dish was equally rich and well prepared swimming in a unique orange pepper sauce. Last but not least, out from the kitchen comes 28 day-aged filet mignon served over grilled Belgian en-

dive in a demi-glaze sauce cheered on by a hardy glass of Antica Cabernet Sauvignon. The ultimate experience from a night of fine dining and great live music was capped off with Chocolate Blackberry Crème Brule. At his Italian restaurant Chef Mo offers his wine tasting events about every three months; these are memorable experiences no one should miss. So, the next time Chef Moe announces when the next Alta Cucina wine tasting is, race to sign up because the tables fill up fast. Mountain City’s Longtime City Recorder Retiring in June Mountain City, TN. --- Terry Reece has been the face of Mountain City’s City Hall for the past 25 years. But on June 30th he’ll shut the lights out for the last time at the City Recorder’s office as he trades in his suit and tie in for a set of golf clubs. Such is the bliss of impending retirement. Reece, who oversees 43 employees, characterized his job as Mountain City’s finance manager as one in which he is “a jack of all trades” during an interview on April 22nd which just happened to be his 64th birthday. “Since I began 25 years ago the paper work has increased dramatically and the budget is somewhat larger,” he said matter-of-factly. “While the town has grown [in population] unfortunately recruiting new businesses has been difficult.” Mountain City’s population is around 2,500 people. “It’s not that we haven’t tried to recruit new businesses,” Reece added with a smile. “We just can’t meet the criteria when it comes to the require population numbers to attract certain businesses including new restaurants. Although some people said we’d never get a Hardee’s, but not only did we land them and after they came to town others followed, McDonald’s and Burger King; the theory being that people don’t eat at the same place over and over.” Reece admits Mountain City’s form of government “is not the best.” He says many times his hands are tied in the decision making process because he serves at the pleasure of the City Council. “This would be the best job in the world if the politics were taken out of it,” Reece added, who has served as recorder for five different mayors and administrations. “The public may get an opinion from me that may be different from the mayor or a member of the [town] council. I am appointed by the board and I work at the pleasure of the City Council.” Reece said Mountain City would be better served to adopt Jonesborough’s form of government where a Town Administrator is at the helm of the day-today decision making process. “A Town Administrator has the ability to make decisions during the course of the dayto-day operation,” he said. Reece is quick to point out however that, “Mountain City is a great town

Page 38

and it is full of great people.” However, Reece also says he won’t miss having to deal daily with the public’s complaints and the job requires one to “have a thick skin,” adding, “it’s difficult not being able to take it [complaints] home with you. It’s also difficult sometimes to deflect a lot of stuff. In my 25 years it seems the more you do the more the public wants.” For Mountain City to progress and grow Reece thinks annexation is the answer. “Our tax base is basically flat,” he offered. “There is not much area where we can grow residentially speaking. We attempted to annex Burlington [which has since closed and took 1500 job with them] but they didn’t want to be annexed and they held those jobs over our head. When they closed, the annexation issue was revisited but it never happened. There is nowhere to grown without annexation.” Reece is happy with the fact that Mountain City has been able to maintain its tax base with just one [property] tax increase during his watch. “You’ve got to be pretty creative to maintain a low tax rate and continue to provide much needed services to the general public,” he said. “Many time’s that not only difficult to do but the general public is not aware of the day-to-day challenges of running a small town with a tight budget.” Shirley Shaw, who Reece hired 24 years ago, will take the reins of Town Recorder on July 1st. “She knows how City Hall works and she was the first person I hired,” Reece said. “She knows the operation and she’s smart.”

Terry Reece Factoid Enjoys golf and gardening. Has two sons and an 11 year-old grandson. Is a Vietnam Veteran. Is active in his church and the VFW. Serves in the Johnson County Honor Guard.
