Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties League, First Division contest against Bacup Borough. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. Again it’s a quick turnaround as we host our penultimate home game here at Brocstedes Park. Saturday saw us take on basement side Whitchurch Alport on what turned out to be a record breaking afternoon as we recorded a 10-0 success a club record margin of victory but not the first time we have hit 10 goals as we first did this in 1947 against Everton “A” in a 10-4 win and also in more recent times in the North West Counties League against Abbey Hey in 2001. The game was over as a contest with just 16 minutes on the clock with Town five goals to the good. The scoring was opened after 8 minutes when Sam Sheen slotted home from just inside the box and the lead was doubled on 11 minutes when Eddie Pegler curled an excellent effort into the top right hand corner of the net from the edge of the box. A minute later it was three when an Andy Gillespie cross broke to Sheen who added his second and Town’s third. Less than 60 seconds later Andy Gillespie got in on the act when he collected a through ball after leaving a defender in his wake and confidently slotted home past the advancing keeper. Gillespie added his second and Town’s fifth showing his strikers instinct to latch onto a loose ball and poke the ball home. There was a slight lull as Town didn’t score again until the 30th minute when Ant Whelan was first to react to a shot from the edge of the box which was deflected and he crossed from the right of the box towards Sheen who headed home to complete his hat-trick. A couple of minutes later it was 7-0 when Sheen showed a fine touch to deftly take the a through ball down before crossing from the right of the penalty box towards Gillespie who flicked the ball on and Ste Rigby headed home at the far post and this rounded off the first half scoring with Town going into the break seven goals to the good. The second half started in a similar vein for the hosts with them dominating possession and looking to net more goals to improve their goal difference in their play-off push. It only took until the 52nd minute for Town to add an eighth with Aaron Morris getting in on the act firing home from inside the box with the aid of a deflection, his second Town goal of the season with his first being in the reverse fixture at Whitchurch. Ten minutes then passed before Danny Greene added the ninth latching onto a through ball and powering away from the Whitchurch backline before firing home and after an agonising wait to see if Town could net a tenth and record their biggest ever winning margin skipper Andy Gillespie popped up in the 90th minute to thunder a shot inside the left hand post from the right of the box to finish the contest and send him to 32 goals for the season putting him in pole position for the First Division “golden boot” award.
We move onto this evenings contest against a Bacup side who have been in fine form recently and have had some tough tests over the last couple of games. They fought out a 1-1 draw with Barnton on Saturday and midweek had lost by the odd goal to now promoted Irlam. As I write on Sunday evening they have to host Holker on Monday evening prior to visiting us and this will be a tough game as well against a side who ran out 6-0 winners on Saturday. Bacup will have big say on who will be involved in the play off’s come the end of the regular season as they still have to play us, Holker & Ashton Town twice. The equation is still simple for St Helens Town we need to win our last three games which will be no easy task against Bacup, Barnton & Hanley and see what happens above us if we are to secure a berth in the play-offs! Lets get behind Town and hopefully cheer them on to victory! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller
Bacup Borough Football Club was established in 1879. Their first match to take place at their current Brian Boys West View Stadium was not until 1889 when one of the founder members of the English Football League Accrington Stanley played there in front of over 1,000 spectators.
Bacup’s proudest achievement was winning the Lancashire Combination Championship in the 1946/47 season, this along with finishing runners up after losing to Marine 2-1 in the Lancashire Combination Cup Final. 1972/73 season the club finished runners up in the League, losing out on goal average despite scoring 101 goals. In 1974/75 they reached the Lancashire Junior Cup Final losing 1-0 against Lancaster City, this despite famous victories against Formby, Wigan Athletic, South Liverpool, and Morecambe. In the last ever Lancashire Combination Challenge Cup Final Bacup were beaten 1-3 by Caernarfon Town in a twolegged Final. In 1982 Bacup Borough became founder members of the North West Counties League, this following the amalgamation of the Cheshire League & the Lancashire Combination. In the 1987/88 season Bacup had to apply for re-election following finishing bottom of the Second Division. In the 1988 /89 season under the Management of Gary Warburton the club finished Runners up in Division Two and also finished Runners Up in the Lamot Pils Trophy, they also the same season reached the Quarter Final of the League Cup and due to the Leagues re-organisation the club started the 1989 /90 season as a First Division Club. However, in the1994 /95 season Bacup Borough were relegated back to the Second Division & did struggle both on and off the field. In September of the 1997/98 season with no points on the board and following a humiliating 0-10 defeat by Tetley Walker this prompted the Committee to part company with their then Manager. This then made way for the appointment of the former Doncaster Rovers Assistant Manager, Bury F.C Youth Team Coach, Accrington Stanley Director of Football, & Rossendale Utd & Glossop North End Manager Brent Peters to take over as Manager, a position he has held ever since.
Brent’s early record of achievement saw the club finish the 1997/98 season in 14th position, climbing in 1998 /99 to 11th position before in 1999/00 they finished 5th in the league, the clubs highest league position in over ten years. In Season 2000/01 the club reached the Second Division Cup Final but lost 1-0 to Squires Gate. Brent’s greatest achievement came at the end of the 2002/03 season when he guided the club to the Championship of the North West Counties League First Division, the first major success for the club in 56 years. This brought Brent Three Manager of the Month Awards and The Manager of The Year Award. Season 2003/04, Bacup’s first season following the First Division Championship the club finished 14th in the Premier Division and did win the North West Counties League Challenge Cup at Southport’s Haig Avenue Ground by beating Newcastle Town 3-0. Other cup runs saw Borough as NWCFL Challenge Cup Quarter Finalists in 2004/05 and Lancashire FA Co-operative Trophy Quarter Finalists in 2007/08. They finished in 8th Position in the NWCFL Premier Division in the 2008/09 Season.
June 14th 2004 brought another land mark for the club when Bacup’s Secretary Frank Manning celebrated not only his 70th Birthday but also 50yrs in the game of which well over 40 years have been spent in administration at his beloved Bacup Borough F.C, This achievement was recognised by Frank being presented with a gold award on behalf of the Football Association by Mr Jim Kenyon the Secretary of the Lancashire Football Association. This achievement brought Frank the position of Chairman of the club, a post he held until accepting the position of President of Bacup & Rossendale Borough FC at the re-branding on June 17th 2013. It was a sad start to the 2011/2012 season with the sudden passing away of Kenneth Peters on the 15th June 2011 and he was also the club president and father of our manager. On the field of play further success was to come with more silverware, this following a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Maine Road in the NWCFL Challenge Cup Final which was played at the Tameside Stadium Ashton in front of a big crowd, the team was captained by Davey Luker. The 2012/2013 season proved to be another difficult time at the club following the sad deaths of people dearly close to the club. Four came in the month of October 12 from which the biggest shock was 27 year old player Bryan Herbert. On the pitch the team once again did well by getting to yet another cup final and this time it was the Lancashire FA Cooperative Trophy Final played at the Reebok Stadium at Bolton. Despite playing a team from two leagues above, Bacup gave a very good account of themselves against team from the Evo Stick Premier Division, AFC Fylde ran out 2-0 winners. June 17th 2013 Bacup Borough officially adopted the title of Rossendale; this came about following the sad demise of Rossendale United FC, thus leaving Bacup Borough as the Rossendale Valley’s most senior football club. They were now the sole flag bearers of the Rossendale Valley and, for the commercial side, it made sense to add ‘Rossendale’ to the club’s name making the club Bacup & Rossendale Borough FC. The new name also brings with it a newly designed crest to form its very own identity, with a plan for progression in place and the words, ‘Prosperity Through Endeavour’ prominently featured. The 2013/2014 season was a nail-biter right until the last game, but with BARB’s place in the Pemier Division secured the club is ready to progress with its ambitious plans as Rossendale’s number one football club. Sadly the 2014/2015 season did not turn out as we had wished. Injuries and other problems resulted in the team being relegated from the Premier Division. A decision was taken to relaunch Bacup Borough Football Club from the start of the 2015/2016 season. The historic crest has been brought back and there are exciting developments on and off the pitch. Among these is the creation of two junior teams – an U15 team and an U18 team – who will compete under the banner of Bacup Borough FC. We look forward confidently to the coming season.

Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this NWCFL First Division meeting with Bacup Borough. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own support are treated to an entertaining encounter. I’d like to thanks tonight’s match sponsors The Track King who join us again this season; many thanks to MD Alan Gibbons. Thanks also to sports journalist and broadcaster Stuart Pyke who is this evening’s match ball sponsors - we hope you enjoy the game and our hospitality. We are on the look for sponsors for next season - please contact me on 07713 339 682 for more information. The full details of next season’s sponsor packages ae now on our website. Following the disappointing loss to Ashton Town last midweek the lads put in a terrific performance last Saturday when Whitchurch Alport made a first visit to Brocstedes Park and were duly sent packing 10-0; a club record for Town. Andy Gillespie’s first goal and Town's fourth was the club's 2250th League goal, and his next goal and Town's fifth was their 1200th home League goal. Our run of home games continues this evening as we host Bacup Borough in what may be another pivotal game in the chase for a play-off place. The two clubs met a few weeks ago and a thrilling 3-3 draw was witnessed at the West View stadium. We travel to Barton on Saturday before our final game of the season when we host Hanley Town on Bank Holiday Monday (2nd May, kick off 3.00pm). There will no doubt be lots of twists and turns as the season enters its final week or so and all we can ask is for a maximum effort from the squad and a little bit of good fortune. Apologies, but tonight ’s programme was printed on Monday and does not include results from Monday and Tuesday evening. Don’t forget our Presentation Evening will take place on Friday 6th May 2016, 8pm in the Percival Rooms, Ruskin Drive, St Helens. Enjoy the game and let’s hope the lads can pick up three points . . . Town 10-0 Whitchurch Alport NWCFL Division One Saturday 23rd April 2016
Welcome to Brocstedes Park for this evening’s meeting with Bacup Borough It promises to be an exciting affair with both teams chasing hard for a play off place. The reverse fixture was a pulsating game with the visitors St. Helens racing into 3-0 lead within 15 minutes only to be pegged back after a controversial sending off and a resultant penalty. Town go into tonight’s fixture on a high note after a record 10-0 victory over bottom side Whitchurch at the weekend. It would be easy to dismiss the magnitude of the victory but that would ignore some scintillating football played in the 1st half probably as good as anything we have produced this season. Not so good news on the injury front with young goalkeeper Matty Hodge ruled out for the rest of the season after a freak training ground accident on Thursday. Congratulations to young centre back Sam Rawsthorne stepping up from our U18 North West Youth Alliance League side to make a very assured full debut last Saturday a game which also saw a debut for ’keeper Liam Bowyer. The game saw hat-tricks for midfielder Sam Sheen and captain Andy Gillespie and takes Andy to 32 goals for the season and to the top of the FNWCFL First Division goal-scoring charts. Congratulations also to young Ste Rigby who has been excellent all season on deservedly winning MOM against Ashton Town. A mention also for the great form from defenders Aaron Morris Ant Whelan and Andy Presho. Tonight's game is likely to be an extremely close affair and we will need the full support of all our supporters so get behind the lads and let's see if we can make the play offs Enjoy the game Alan Gillespie Joint 1st Team Manager
Town plan to honour stalwart The life of club Trustee Eric Bond is to be commemorated this season following the stalwart’s recent death.
Eric passed away at the end of March and testament to his overwhelming popularity was the numbers who attended his funeral at St James the Great Church on Friday 1st April. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘It was a packed church with mourners representing a huge number of organisations across St Helens and Merseyside including the St Helens Football Combination, Liverpool County Football Association and St Helens & District Sports Council along with family, friends and former club and playing colleagues. He added, ‘The committee met earlier this week and discussed an appropriate way to honour Eric’s time as a player and official with the club and we’ve have decided to purchase a new Youth Team Player of the Year trophy which will be named ‘The Eric Bond Memorial Trophy’ and which will be presented to the U18s Player of the Year for the first time at the club’s presentation evening on Friday 6th May 2016.
‘Eric had a great affinity with the development of young players and his work with the St Helens Comb Inter-League and Liverpool County FA U18s provided him with some of his proudest moments.’ Eric will join former players Bert Trautmann, Bill Foulkes and Tommy O’Neil whose time and association with Town are also commemorated at the club’s annual awards evening. Town U21s make Cup Final St Helens Town U21s reached the Final of the Cheshire FA U21s League Richie Bentley Catering Premier Cup. John McLaughlin’s side beat Bootle at Edge Hill University Sports complex in a game which proved to be a cracking cup tie and saw the lead exchange hands four times before the Town youngsters edged the game 5-4 after extra time.
The U21s will meet Rochdale U21s on Sunday 1st May, kick off 11.00am at Altrincham FC

Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club.
1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road.
Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs Combination Championship Trophy from Wesley Bridge in 1972
Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.
1992-93 Mick Holgate (left) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price took over the managerial reigns. The end of the 2014-15 season culminated in relegation for Town and Ian Price had already informed the club of his intention to step down. U21s boss Alan Gillespie and Ian Price’s long time assistant Nick Matthews were promoted to the joint managers Nick Matthews Alan Gillespie position. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

ST. HELENS TOWN AFC – A STATISTICAL HISTORY by Glyn Jones Part 69 - Town in the Lancashire Cup Back in 2007, Gordon Small put together a comprehensive history of the Lancashire Cup, which was published by Soccer Data on behalf of the Lancashire Football Association. The book lists, in great detail, the records of each competition from its inception in 1879 right up to 2007. The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and operated for 27 years before it folded and it entered the Lancashire Senior Cup, to give the competition its full title, on eight occasions between 1901/02 and 1913/14. Although the club never won the trophy, they progressed through the rounds on a number of occasions, full details of which appear above: Season 1901/02

The current club was re-formed in 1946 and began playing in the 1947/48 season. By that stage, the Senior Cup was restricted to Football League clubs only, with Town taking part in the Lancashire Junior Cup for a number of seasons. I will cover those games in a future article. Nevertheless, Town’s former players have played – and scored crucial goals in – Lancashire Senior Cup Finals on a number of occasions over the years, sometimes against glamorous opposition. Bill Foulkes played on the winning side against Liverpool in the 1968/69 Final before 4,299 at Old Trafford and the following season, Geoff Nulty was a scorer in Burnley’s 3-2 win over Barrow in front of 3,251 at Turf Moor. Bryan Griffiths came on as substitute for Wigan Athletic, who lost 1-0 to Bury at Gigg Lane before a crowd of 2,682 in the 1986 competition (by which stage, it had become a preseason tournament). Griffiths was on the winning side five years later in a 4-1 win over Preston at Springfield Park (crowd 3,315) and in the 1993 Final, he scored the only goal, from the penalty spot as his new club Blackpool beat a Manchester United side containing Dion Dublin, Lee Sharpe, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes (the last two who came on as substitutes) before 6,612 fans at Bloomfield Road. Former Town striker Dave Bamber played in the same match for the Seasiders. Griffiths went on to score the only goal again the following year – Bamber came on as a substitute - to beat Bury before a rather smaller gate of 3,150. Griffiths made his last appearance in a final in 1998, alongside current Everton manager Roberto Martinez, in a 3-1 win for Wigan over Rochdale at Springfield Park, the crowd numbering just 2,191.
Bacup Borough 3-3 Town NWCFL Division One Saturday 19th March 2016
The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7 th May 1949. Crowds averaged over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record attendance of 3102 against Burscough Tommy O’Neil in October 1948. Wembley,1987 The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An all-time club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further their ambitions, it moved to the former St. Helens Recs. ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and Karl Ledsham is now playing his football at Conference level, initially with Southport, then at Lincoln City. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the
St Helens Town 1948
proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. This season is a momentous one for St. Helens Town: not only do they have to fight to regain their Premier Division status, but also they are looking to return to a new base, back in the town at Ruskin Drive. The Hoghton Road facilities had fallen into disrepair and the site was sold for housing in 2002, Town having gone into partnership with Saints Rugby League club, groundsharing at the old Knowsley Road ground for 10 years, but the intended relocation to the new Langtree Park ground did not materialise and the club embarked on a nomadic existence, first at Ashton Town, now at Ashton Athletic. Construction work at the Council-owned multisports facility at Ruskin Drive has been delayed, but is now under way and Town are looking to move in at the start of the 2016-17 season, hopefully back in the Premier Division.

Play Off Dream Shattered? St Helens fall to costly defeat as Ashton grind out victory By Kieran Ford St Helens Town went into last night’s game at Brocstedes Park knowing that a win was paramount if they were to keep their promotion ambitions alive. After their 3-0 success against Northwich Manchester Villa on Saturday, the play offs were still in sight, but would have to rely on results from others, even if they were to gain 3 points in tonight’s battle. They were facing Ashton Town for the 2nd time in 10 days, but Ashton were enduring a run of only 1 win in 12 games prior to the contest, if the game was anything like the 8 goal contest last Saturday, we were sure to be in for a thriller! The home side made 3 changes from Saturday’s victory, as they knew they were in for a tough game against a side only 2 places below them in the league with 2 games in hand. Aaron Morris moved back into defence while Matty Davidson was dropped to the bench. Sam Sheen, Ed Pegler and Danny Greene came into the starting 11 as replacements for Adam Lawrence and the suspended George Lomax. Similar to St Helens’ past few games, the game started evenly as there was a lot of possession in the midfield for both sides as they looked to ease into the game. However, it was plain to see that St Helens were allowing Ashton the ball as they looked to counter attack through Pegler, Greene and top scorer Andy Gillespie. In a game of few chances, relinquishing the possession battle meant that the majority of chances were bound to fall to the away side. This was indeed the case as Ashton created the first major chance 10 minutes into the game as the Ashton captain Sean Robinson pulled the ball back to Phillip Williams however his effort hit Matt Hodge’s far post. The home team then arguably created their best effort of the game as Ed Pegler, who is prone to scoring long range efforts, sent a dipping effort from 25 yards crashing against the bar of Ashton goalkeeper Joe Clements’ goal. As the ball was in the air Sam Sheen was running into the area but could not control his header as it went wide of the post. Town looked promising in spells throughout the first half, but failed to muster shots on target. A speculative Andy Gillespie effort that forced a smart save from Clements was all they could show for in the first half.
Just after the half an hour mark, the away side took the lead, as a foul in the build-up of an Ashton move lead to advantage being played which caused confusion in the St Helens defence. When they eventually tried to clear their lines, the ball broke to former St Helens winger Neil Weaver who sent Hodge the wrong way to score his 4th goal in as many matches, his 3rd in 2 matches against his former club. The goal was accompanied by a Paul Pogba inspired “dab” celebration for good measure. This meant that Town went into the dressing room 1 goal down, which if the game was won on possession, was widely expected, however with Ashton also lacking chances, there was still every chance for St Helens to walk away with a result. An intelligent tactical change decided the game on Saturday, however the second half in this contest started in the worst possible fashion for the Reds as defender Aaron Morris conceded a penalty only 3 minutes after the restart. Up stepped Weaver looking to double his tally for the night, however skied his effort over the bar in what was a let off for the home side. It was expected that St Helens would look to press for an equaliser, however were stifled at every opportunity as Gillespie was often isolated up front as Town had no answer to Ashton’s pressing and solid defensive display. The game petered out as the home side were only able to create one more chance before the game’s conclusion with Andy Gillespie firing over. There were some positives from St Helens however, even if they were to be on the losing side, Ant Whelan continued his string of solid performances in defence, Hodge made a terrific save from an effort from range in the second half, and Sam Rawsthorne came off the bench for the second successive game as he looks to consolidate a place in and around the first time for next season. FT: St Helens Town 0 – 1 Ashton Town (Weaver, 31)

Double Digit Delight! by Kieran Ford St Helens Town hit Whitchurch Alport for 10 in a record breaking game at Brocstedes Park. Knowing that their quest for a playoff place was all but over, St Helens Town could head into today’s match against basement boys Whitchurch Alport knowing that they may as well throw caution to the wind in today’s match. Whitchurch had already conceded 110 goals before today, however what occurred would be a pleasant surprise for the fans of the home side. As expected, the hosts started the brighter, and dominated possession around the Whitchurch area, and the pressure duly delivered a goal as Town number 9 and captain Andy Gillespie slipped through Sam Sheen who slotted past Grant Hartley in the Whitchurch goal to make it 1-0, this was a sign of things to come as the hosts would continue to pepper to opposition net. Then came a period of 3 goals in 3 minutes for St Helens Town as Ed Pegler doubled their lead with a terrific curling effort into the top corner as a result of a short set piece. The Reds quickly made it 3 as Sheen added his second of the game which resulted in another assist for Andy Gillespie. The Town skipper floated in a cross for the midfielder to hit in the volley, his attempt was slightly scuffed by found its way into the net to put the home side further in front. Andy Gillespie finally got on the score sheet as Town were exploiting crosses and over the top through balls throughout the half. This again came to fruition when he ran onto a pass, while outmuscling a Whitchurch defender before finishing calmly into the near post, putting Town 4 goals to the good after 14 minutes. Their 5th goal of the game also came from the front man as Town could now smell blood and were queueing up to score, the ball eventually fell to the number 9 and he produced a smart finish to make the deficit 5 goals after 16 minutes. After this, St Helens slightly slowed down on the goal scoring front, however still dominated possession and were allowed to play the game at their pace. A 6th goal of the half was inevitable and it arrived after half an hour, handball claims from the Whitchurch defence were denied and an Ant Whelan cross found the head of Sam Sheen to complete a first half hattrick for him. Ste Rigby got in on the act as he arrived in the box to nod a goal bound shot into the net. This completed a 7 goal half for Town who looked on course to
achieve the biggest victory in their history.
HT: St Helens Town (Sheen, 8, 12, 30) (Pegler, 11) (Andy Gillespie, 14 17) (Rigby, 34) 7 - 0 Whitchurch Alport The second half continued in a similar vein as the home side continued to sit off the visitors as they knew the damage was already done. Town did continue to press however their luck seemed to be far less in the second period as the double digit figure could have been achieved far earlier if they had taken the chances that had come their way. The 8th goal did come after 52 minutes as a through ball found typical right back Aaron Morris, free on the left wing of all places. The number 2 bared down on goal and although his effort was deflected by a defender, it still found its way into the far corner. Goal number 9 came in due course as Danny Greene waltzed through the Whitchurch defence that at this point had hardly any fight left in them, and slotted past the goal keeper to put Town within 1 goal of the magic 10 goal target. They had to wait until the last minute of the game for this, with the double digit dream running out, Andy Gillespie popped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way in the final minute to seal his hat trick. FT: St Helens Town (Sheen, 8, 12, 30) (Pegler, 11) (Andy Gillespie, 14, 17, 90) (Rigby, 34) (Morris, 52) (Greene, 62) 10 - 0 Whitchurch Alport
Saturday 19th March 2016 Bacup Borough 3-3 St Helens Town TOWN’S PROMOTION PUSH CONTINUES by Glyn Jones Following on from their impressive 5-0 win at Holker Old Boys, St. Helens Town held out for a battling 3-3 draw against all the odds at Bacup on Saturday, to leave themselves on the very fringes of the promotion play-off places, still in eighth place, but hot on the heels on the three teams just above them, all of whom have played more games and who are now within striking distance with the Easter weekend fixtures on the horizon.
The fine form continued in the early stages at West View on Saturday, where St. Helens raced into a 3-0 lead, Rigby latching on to a Danny Greene cross in the fifth minute before Andy Gillespie scored twice in the 7th and 12th minutes to stretch the advantage. His first goal came as a result of a break when he took on two defenders and then hit a wonderfully placed shot from a tight angle past home keeper Peter Monteith which went in off the far post. His second came from a cross on the right which ricocheted off a defender’s hand on to Rigby and Gillespie was sharp enough to bury the rebound to notch up his quarter century of goals for the season. Bacup pulled a goal back after 26 minutes through Matthew Barlow who headed a cross just out of Hodge’s reach, over his head and into the net. With Town still in control at 3-1, the game turned on its head on the half hour, when the referee dismissed Town centre back Adam Lawrence for a clumsy challenge on Bacup’s Anthony Hall. Hall was actually moving away from goal at the time of the tackle, so the red card appeared unwarranted for a player who has given no trouble for Town since he made his debut back in September. It was the first of a series of controversial decisions from the referee, who upset both sides during the course of the match and which left Town a man short for 70 minutes. George Lomax had a glorious chance to restore Town’s three goal advantage shortly before the interval, but his shot went inches wide of the far post with Monteith beaten. Just after that, Bacup pulled another goal back, again through Barlow and the teams went in at half-time with Town leading 3-2. The second-half was, for the most part, a very tense affair, punctuated by a series of questionable refereeing decisions, four of which left St. Helens at a disadvantage. In one such incident Lomax, who had been a constant thorn in the Bacup side throughout the game, was elbowed in the face by an opponent, which drew no card, but the Town player had to leave the field soon afterwards. Then Andy Gillespie was bundled over at the edge of the penalty area, again no action taken against the offender and Town were denied a penalty shout when Rigby was clearly felled from behind, although on this occasion, the incident may not have been seen by any of the officials. With 22 minutes left, however, the home side were awarded a disputed penalty, which was dispatched by Barlow, to level the scores at 3-3, after which both sides still had chances to win the game. Matt Davidson cleared the ball off his line to save a certain Bacup goal and Hodge produced a number of important saves, including a double save in the closing minute whilst, at the other end, Todd Blayney, seizing on to a deflected shot, very nearly scored the winning goal for Town, which Monteith was very fortunate to get a hand to. It was one of those days when all the Town players fought to a man to rescue a point which, in the circumstances felt almost as good as a win and keeps the team very much on course for a rousing finish to the season.
The club are looking for a kit sponsor for the start of the 2016-17 season. With a St Helens homecoming (as part of the Ruskin development) and a return to our traditional blue and white next season when we will also celebrate our 70th anniversary we start the search for a new kit sponsor. EcigUK St Helens, recently relocated to Hall Street, St Helens have been our superb sponsors for the past two seasons but new EU regulations on the promotion and marketing of E-Cigarettes and associated products come into effect on May 20th and has meant that they are unable to continue into a third season. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘Our support from Eddie and all at EcigUk St Helens has been brilliant and I know they did want to continue with their kit sponsorship, especially having supported us during a difficult period when we have been playing out of town. ‘I am disappointed for the club and for EcigUk St Helens but the decision has been taken out of our hands. I’d like to thank them for their continued support and there’s still plenty to play for before the season ends. I’d like to think we have provided great coverage for EcigUK as part of their sponsorship, proving real value for money and a return on their investment in the club.’
We are looking for a 1st team kit sponsor for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons covering a period from June 2016 through to May 2018 but we would also consider a one-year deal. Each package would include the following offer:
Company name/logo on the front of the 1st team HOME and AWAY shirts (40+ games per season). Company name/logo on the back of the 1st team HOME and Away shirts. Press launch/photographs for the sponsorship deal (plus lots of website and social media coverage) Full page, full colour programme advert (we can produce the artwork) plus use of company logo/details throughout the editorial pages of the match programme. Adverts can be updated throughout the season. Programme editorial throughout the season
Company advert on multiple pages of our website linking to your website Use of company name/logo in press releases, match reports, etc Multiple match photos submitted to the local newspapers VIP tickets for our End of Season Presentation Evening and other nonmatchday activities 1 x Executive Match Sponsorship (up to six additional guests) 1 x Match Ball Sponsorship (up to two additional guests) 4 x VIP Match Passes (allowing entry and hospitality throughout the season) Tweets/Re-tweets, Facebook posts/re-posts - significant promotion of the shirt sponsor 1 x Ground Advertising Board

As the season nears its climax, there was once again plenty of drama and results that had an impact at the top and bottom of both divisions on Saturday. In the Premier Division, it's still as tight as ever at the top, with both Runcorn Linnets and Colne needing late goals to keep their respective title aspirations on track. Linnets remain top after a 2-1 win over 1874 Northwich in their last home game of the season at the Millbank Linnets Stadium. Neil Chappell gave the visitors a half time lead, before Antony Hickey levelled midway through the second half, and not for the first time this season Michael White struck the winner from the penalty spot, with ten minutes left. Meanwhile, news of that goal would no doubt have filtered through to the XLCR Stadium, where Colne were being held by Bootle, but with four minutes left Simon Nangle scored what could be a crucial goal for the Reds to earn a narrow 1-0 win. Linnets now lead Colne by two points, having played a game more.
Alsager Town and Silsden.
Atherton Collieries' hopes of still being in the title race were all but ended after being held to a 2-2 draw at home to AFC Blackpool, a result that also had a big impact at the other end of the table. Jordan Cover gave Colls an early lead, but Boubacar Kaba and a Jack Williams penalty put the visitors into a 2-1 lead that they held until a minute before the end, when a Mark Ayres penalty levelled for Colls. None the less, it was an important point for AFC Blackpool, in the light of results elsewhere, most notably at
Alsager Town lost 2-0 at home to Padiham, with second half goals from Thomas Fowler and Aaron Taylor for the Storks, and Silsden twice led at home to Congleton Town through goals from Kyle Hancock and Andrew Hill, but two goals from Declan Fletcher, the second just two minutes from time, meant the sides ended up tied at 2-2. It now looks grim for both Alsager and Silsden in the relegation battle, but AFC Blackpool are now just a point from safety and are five points behind Squires Gate with three games in hand, with the local rivals due to meet in the final week of the season. Squires Gate did their survival hopes a power of good with a 2-1 home win over Runcorn Town, thanks to goals in each half from Nathan Trout and Joe Noblet. Elsewhere, a hat trick from Nico Collins saw Abbey Hey through to a 3-0 win at home to Nelson, and a Ben Gorman penalty on the stroke of half time proved to be the matchwinner at Winsford United for Barnoldswick Town. Two first half goals from Isaac Kusaloska set Ashton Athletic on their way to a 4-1 win over AFC Liverpool, and on Friday evening, a Martin Hill goal just after half time was enough to earn Maine Road a 1-0 win at West Didsbury & Chorlton, in front of West's highest ever crowd in the NWCFL. In the First Division, there were full time celebrations both at Silver Street and the Abzorbed Arena, with both Irlam and Hanley Town both clinching automatic promotion with home wins. Irlam won 2-0 against Chadderton, thanks to second half goals from Matty Boland and Dean Burgess, and goals in the opening 25 minutes from Nathan Grice and Theo Stair set Hanley Town on the way to a 2-1 home win over Ashton Town. As well as the automatic promotion places being decided, Barnton and Stockport Town have now claimed play off places. Barnton are in third place after a 1-1 draw at Bacup Borough, while first half goals from Jake Pollard and Jamie Kay earned Stockport Town a 2-0 win at home to Daisy Hill. Holker Old Boys are in fifth place after a 6-0 win at home to Northwich Manchester Villa, Michael Rushton and Christopher Wraighte both scoring twice, and there were hat tricks from both Sam Sheen and Andy Gillespie in St Helens Town's 10-0 win over Whitchurch Alport at Brocstedes Park. It was a result that still keeps Town in the hunt for a play-off place, especially with Eccleshall inflicting a major blow on Litherland REMYCA, with Remy's play off hopes seriously damaged with a last minute winner from Angelo Errico clinching a 2-1 win for Eccleshall. In the other game, two goals from Luke Edwards helped Widnes to a 3-1 win over Rochdale Town.
Monday 18th April 2016 Colne recorded their 150th away League win with the 5-0 defeat of Winsford United.
Atherton LR's second goal in the 4-2 defeat at Daisy Hill, scored by Tommy Williams in the 76th minute, was LR's 800th away League goal. Saturday 23rd April 2016 As well as recording their record League win with a 10-0 victory over Whitchurch Alport, St Helens Town also achieved a double landmark in the game, thanks to striker Andy Gillespie.
His first goal and Town's fourth was the club's 2250th League goal, and his next goal and Town's fifth was their 1200th home League goal. Holker Old Boys passed 1100 League points with their 6-0 win over Northwich Manchester Villa (they are now on 1102). The opening goal for Atherton Collieries in the 2-2 home draw with AFC Blackpool, scored by Jordan Cover in the 6th minute, was their 1100th home League goal. The League is offering hospitality packages for the forthcoming Men United Cup Final between Atherton Collieries and Colne on 10th May. The Final is being hosted at Fleetwood Town's excellent Highbury Stadium. Pre match hospitality is available at £20 per person which includes a two course meal, complementary match programme and a seat on the balcony in the main stand.
The Match Sponsorship is available at £1500 which includes a private hospitality box for 12 persons, waitress service, two course meal, complementary match programme and seat on the balcony in the main stand. General admission prices for the final are adults £6 and concessions £4, and spectators can pay on the gate.
