Talk of the Town Good evening, and welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League, First Division contest against our friends from Ashton Town. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been just shy of a week since we were here at Volair Park hosting City of Liverpool in front of a large crowd of 539. The game started off slowly with both sides seemingly feeling each other and it took until the 17th minute for the deadlock to be broken when City of Liverpool got down the right wing and sent the ball hard and low into the danger area Liam Dodd was first to meet the ball but he appeared to try and clear the ball with the wrong foot and his contact corkscrewed the ball past Adam Fairchild and into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Fairchild was on fine form and he had to be alert to deny the visitors on several occasions in the first half and just as the clock ticked to the half hour mark the hosts drew level. Joel Douglas in typical style battled past his marker and latched onto a through ball before being felled and the resultant free kick centrally from the edge of the “D” was dispatched low into the bottom right hand corner of the net by Alex Gillespie. This was not the last action of the half and it was the visitors who were to end the half in front through a rather generously awarded spot kick. Eddie Pegler closed the ball down on the left edge of box and the ball hit him from close range with the referee deeming that this was intentional and John Connolly sent Fairchild the wrong way with the penalty. The second half saw a more disjointed game as the rain which had started midway through the first half started to take its toll on the playing surface making it slick and unpredictable. Chances were few and far between and as the game drew towards the final ten minutes of normal time it looked like the visitors had done enough to secure the spoils but as has happened so often at Volair Park this season there was to be late goal scoring action. Town’s battling qualities were evident again as City of Liverpool were harried into half clearances one of which was collected by Andy Presho he took a touch just inside the box and half volleyed an effort goalwards the visiting stopper was only able to parry the effort up into the air and Douglas was on hand to head the rebound home to level matters and take a share of the spoils. This evening is the penultimate home game of the season and we will be looking to finish the season off with as many wins as we can. After this evenings game we will visit Stockport Town on Saturday before the long trip to Barrow to take on Holker Old Boys the following Tuesday evening and finishing up the season here at Volair Park next Saturday by hosting current table toppers Charnock Richard in a game which could decide the destination of the First Division Championship as the final game of last season here against Hanley Town did. Ashton Town have their own reasons to be fighting hard at the end of the season as the visitors look to get off the foot of the table in an attempt avoid relegation and secure their continued membership of the Hallmark Security League for the 2017-18 season. Town will need to be up for the game this evening but if they are able to turn in a performance similar to those from the last two home games against promotion chasing Whitchurch and City of Liverpool then we should have a positive result come the end of the game. In Town Today Ashton Town Association Football Club apparently originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out. Ashton Town have played in the second tier of the NWCFL since the 1987/88 season when the Second and

Ashton Town Third Divisions were merged.

The 2015/16 season saw Ashton Town top the table for a spell early on in the season but after a spell of several months of inactivity due to the weather they slipped down the table and missed out on the play offs. This term has been one of struggle for Town as they have been at the wrong end of the table for the majority of the season and at the foot of the table for a while but have had a recent up turn in form and are looking to claw off the foot of the table and their way out of the relegation zone to preserve their North West Counties League membership. Chairman’s Notes Good evening and a very warm welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League First Division encounter with friends and neighbours Ashton Town. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with today’s match officials and our own following are treated to an entertaining encounter. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ashton’s Chairman Mark Heys and his committee for their support this season having provided us with a second home when fixture clashes have meant Volair Park has been unavailable. Our well documented delays at Ruskin Drive have also meant we required a back-up plan for next season and a few weeks ago Ashton provided further support by agreeing to sign a ground-share agreement for 2017-18. Of course, we all anticipate this will be a purely paper exercise but I cannot thank Mark and his colleagues enough for helping us out once again. It’s been a tough season for our visitors and they are desperate for points as they look to get off the bottom of the table. They are battling relegation with Eccleshall and there looks there could be a possible reprieve for ‘second bottom’ as the league have asked clubs to vote on the future membership of Atherton LR, following prolonged administrative difficulties. It’s a difficult situation for all involved and I am sure more details will become available in the next few weeks. Last Good Friday’s home fixture with City of Liverpool proved to be a really successful day with a crowd of 539 out highest since FC United of Manchester visited Knowsley Road 11 years ago. The atmosphere was superb and the CoLFC supporters were a credit to their club and the league. Bigger crowds and an improved atmosphere as a consequence are something that we need to make a reality when we get to Ruskin Drive - if you can help or want to get involved with the club please drop me an email (mckiernanj@live.com) or call me on 07713 339 682. We’ve got another quick turnaround as we travel to Stockport Town on Saturday afternoon before entering the final week of the season with a long trip to Holker Old Boys next Tuesday and a final day of the season home fixture with current league leaders Charnock Richard. Hopefully we can host anther decent crowd as the league newcomers attempt to gain automatic promotion as a minimum.

Ruskin Drive News Work on Ruskin Drive Sports Ground is now progressing well with the ground works completed and this week has seen the start of the dressing room structure. In addition the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hospitality room has also been delivered and put in position ready for utilities to be connected. Work on lowering the pitch side perimeter fencing (behind both goals and on the stand side) will commence week beginning Monday 24th April.

Match Report Town Haunted by Former Players as Widnes Hit Them For 8 by Kieran Ford

Red hot Widnes continue their promotion push in style This season has seen the departure of attackers the Lomax brothers (George and Chris) as well as midfield player Sam Sheen to Saturday’s hosts. Town’s loss has been Widnes’ gain as the home side have been on a remarkable run of form. This has included seven league wins in a row conceding only 1 goal in the process. The game started as expected with the hosts on top, with main striker George Lomax creating two chances in the opening 2 minutes, first driving forward unchallenged before a disappointing effort, before linking up well with captain Kevin Towey but his header was well saved by Fairchild. Town should have opened the scoring when Ste Rigby nipped in to steal the ball from Mike Burke before breaking into the box but his shot was beaten away by home stopper. The Town keeper was beaten for the first time on 21 minutes, a long ball over the top beat a seemingly tired Town defence from Thursday nights’ exploits against Whitchurch Alport. George Lomax nipped in between Andy Webster and Fairchild to score an easy finish. The ball over the Town defence was always a threat, and this worked yet again for Widnes, this time a weak header from returning Adam Donohue didn’t find Fairchild in time and Lomax was again on hand to be first to the ball and score. Another lofted ball over the top was St Helens’ downfall as Lomax bagged his hat-trick against his former side. He once again beat Fairchild to the ball, lobbing it beyond the keeper before rounding him and tucking it into the net. HT: Widnes (George Lomax, 21, 35, 43) 3 – 0 St Helens Town To make matters worse for St Helens Town, another of their former players, Chris Lomax, came on at half time. He took no time to make an impact, as he was given way too much time on the edge of the area to pick his spot and bent a terrific shot into the top corner leaving Fairchild with no chance. Chris Lomax was involved in Widnes’ 5th as Steven Akrigg was allowed to head in from his corner, for his first goal of the campaign. The centre half couldn’t believe his luck as he added his 2nd of the game 6 minutes later. It was a carbon copy of his first, heading in again from a corner as Town couldn’t wait to make the short trip back to St Helens. To perhaps rub salt in the wounds, another Town old boy Chad Whyte was substituted on. Much like the Lomax brothers, Whyte didn’t take long to influence the game. First, he stole the ball from Town substitute Daniel Lomax and burst down the left, he laid the ball off to Luke J Edwards who hit a crisp 1st time effort off the bar to give Widnes a 7th. Minutes later, it was Chris Lomax’s turn to attack down the left, he crossed for Whyte to hit a powerful volley past Fairchild and to compound a miserable day for St Helens Town. A Brief History The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged Tommy O’Neil over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record Wembley,1987 attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An alltime club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April

St Helens Town 1948 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent mid-season form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early -season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30 th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

Club News St Helens Town and Pilkington FC have teamed up with the Liverpool County FA to host a Sixes Football tournament as part of the St Helens Council Sports Festival in July. The first St Helens Town FC and Pilkington FC Sixes Festival will take place on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th July 2017. The tournament, organised in association with the Liverpool County FA, will be running Open Age, Youth (U16s - U18s for 2017/18 season) & Women’s six-a-side tournaments will be an integral part of the 2017 St Helens Sports Festival taking place on Ruskin Drive Sports Ground. Saturday 8th July 10.30am - Open Age and Women’s tournaments Sunday 9th July 10.30am - Youth tournament All games will take place at the brand new Ruskin Drive 3G stadium and all pitches will be marked out prior to the competitions to FA specifications. Experienced, qualified FA

referees will be provided for all matches & FA small sided rules will apply. All teams will progress from group stages into either the Cup or Plate quarter-finals. Toilets, bar, hot and cold food and drinks all available within the Sportsground and extensive parking is available on site. Match Report v Dale at The Double as Town Bounce Back by Kieran Ford The Blues show their metal with emphatic away performance. St Helens Town had a point to prove after Saturday’s hammering by Widnes, but they were to face another tough test at the ARK Fleetech Stadium at Chadderton who had only lost 1 of their previous 5. In their previous meeting 3 weeks before, Chadderton had come out 3-1 victors at Volair Park, so Town were looking for revenge and to gain momentum before the end of the season. Town started on the back foot, as they couldn’t get the ball out of defence for a prolonged period of time as “Chaddy” looked to build on their recent Macron Challenge Cup semifinal victory over City of Liverpool. An early free kick from Matthew Crothers found captain Dale Minor in space but his close-range header could only go over the bar. Town weren’t in the mood to sit back like Saturday, and created chances of their own. Joel Douglas provided a teasing cross that found Andy Gillespie, but his acrobatic effort was cleared by Minor who was helping at the other end of the field. It was then Gillespie’s brother Alex’s turn to try his luck from range after a Dale Korie-Butler shot was blocked into his path, but his shot went way over the bar. Town, looking a real danger on the counter attack, continued to create chances from set-pieces, Alex Gillespie crossed to his brother Andy from a corner but his glancing header went wide.

Chadderton Just after the half hour mark, the game really came to life. Alex Gillespie again threatened from a set piece, his terrific free kick from the right-hand side went in off Chadderton’s James Curley to give Town the lead In a tight contest so far. As I was still tweeting about the previous goal, Town made it 2 to sucker punch the home side. Dale Korie-Butler bared down on goal on the left, before slotting into the far corner, to shock the Chadderton faithful. Town’s 2 goal advantage didn’t last long, 2 minutes later the home team’s Jack Tuohy was given too much time at the edge of the box to curl an effort into the far corner and to complete an action-packed first half. HT: Chadderton (Tuohy, 36) 1-2 St Helens Town (Own Goal, 33) (Korie-Butler, 34) The second half began as the first ended, as Chadderton were the team to come quickest out the blocks. They equalised 5 minutes after the restart as a volleyed cross from James Curley, looking to make amends at the right end, was backheeled into the net from Michael Moss, giving Chadderton some momentum. However, Town took the lead again just before the hour mark. Another dangerous corner from Alex Gillespie was headed in by centre back for the night Ant Whelan for his 4th goal of the season to put Town in front again. It was Adam Fairchild’s time to stand up and be counted as Chadderton offered relentless pressure to try and equalise the game. Jack Tuohy looked to add his 2nd goal of the evening and was through on goal but produced a terrific save from Fairchild. Devon Matthews hit the bar with a header from a corner before Fairchild produced another strong save from a shot from Matthew Crothers, which added to his steady first half display. Fairchild producing a Peter Schmeichel esque performance in the presence of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, whose son Aaron was on the bench for Chadderton. Town caught Chaddy on the counter attack in injury time, and Dale Korie-Butler was through on goal but was brought down by substitute Nathan Quinllan for a penalty kick. DKB dispatched the spot kick to wrap the game up for the Blues. St Helens still had time to add a 5th, another pinpoint set piece from my man of the match Alex Gillespie found Ste Rigby down the left, he pulled the ball back for sub Andy Presho who fired home to secure Town an impressive victory. Match Report v Town come roaring back St. Helens Town 2, City of Liverpool FC 2 by Glyn Jones After their magnificent 5-2 win at Chadderton, St. Helens Town fought back against the elements and a strong City of Liverpool side to earn a creditable 2-2 draw against their promotionchasing neighbours at Volair Park on Good Friday.

The game at Prescot produced Town’s biggest home gate for 11 years, 539 turning out for the game with fourth-placed City of Liverpool. The visitors were hopeful of securing all three points to keep up the pressure on the top three teams Charnock Richard, Widnes and Litherland Remyca, with Whitchurch Alport breathing down their necks in what looks like being a very tight finish for the two automatic promotion berths, with one club to go up from the play-offs. The Purples, as the new club are known, had already beaten Town twice this season, 5-1 in the league game at Bootle FC and 3-0 at Prescot in the Reusch First Division Trophy Quarter-Final, so they were favourites to win this game. They went ahead in the 17th minute when a corner caused confusion in the Town defence and Liam Dodd, who has been faultless since breaking into the side over the last couple of months, put through his own net, under pressure from Elliott Nevitt. However, Town fought back and the lively Joel Douglas, a recent signing from Cammell Laird 1907, burst through the visitors’ defence directly on goal and was hacked down in the ‘D’. The Purples’ wall was well-organised, but Alex Gillespie had spotted a crucial gap and, taking careful aim, fired St. Helens level at 1-1 on the half-hour. Adam Fairchild, in the Town goal, is in superb form at the moment, and he pulled off the first of five cracking saves, this time from Nevitt, but shortly afterwards, referee Herzog awarded City of Liverpool a penalty for handball by Eddie Pegler after 40 minutes, which looked to be outside the penalty area and Fairchild had no chance of saving from John Connolly who scored off the inside of the right-hand post to send his team in at the break with a 2-1 advantage.

City of Liverpool The rain, which had begun 20 minutes into the first-half, took a serious hold in the second half and the playing surface became very slippery and the ball extremely difficult to control. As a result, both sides found passing very challenging and City of Liverpool’s lead looked to be insurmountable but, to Town’s credit, they kept plugging away. Both Gillespies, Andy and Alex, had given their all, but the introduction of fresh legs in Andy Presho and Michael Chojnicki by manager Alan Gillespie made a big difference and as has been the case in many games at Prescot since the beginning of March, Town were to stage a rousing finish when all seemed lost. Against all the odds and against the elements, St. Helens launched a series of attacks that took the Purples by surprise and with six minutes left, Ste Rigby crossed a ball from the left, the City defence failed to clear and Douglas rammed it home emphatically to earn Town a deserved draw, the final score 2-2. A draw was the result Town’s

battling deserved, but not really what the Liverpool side had been hoping for. Still, they might yet get promotion, since league leaders Charnock Richard are yet to visit Widnes, City of Liverpool and, on the last day of the season, St. Helens Town. St. Helens next play Ashton Town at home on Thursday night (20th April) at Prescot, kick-off 7.45pm, followed by away trips to Stockport Town on Saturday at 3pm, then Holker Old Boys next Tuesday at 7.45pm. Wins in all four remaining games would give them 65 points and a bestplaced ninth place in the final table. Even that would fail to make the play -offs or guarantee entry into next season’s FA Cup, unless the FA allocate extra places into their premier knock-out competition, but until shortly before the draw for the early rounds is released in July, nothing can be taken for granted. Come what may, next season promises to be just as exciting as this season, especially given that there is to be another reorganisation of the non-league system at steps 3 and 4, which will have a big knock-on effect at Town’s level. Manager’s Notes A warm welcome to everyone to this evenings clash with Ashton Town. Our visitors are fighting hard to retain their place in the NWCFL after a tough season but have recently found some good form despite injury setbacks including one to our former goalkeeper Matty Hodge who is recovering from a broken leg. I managed to get to see their recent clash with Saturday’s opponents Stockport Town on Easter Sunday in front of a large 300 plus ground hop crowd and I was impressed by Ashton's energy and their never say die attitude so I'm sure they will be right up for the game tonight. The Good Friday game with City of Liverpool FC didn't disappoint the best Town home crowd for 11 years ending in a pulsating 2-2 draw but perhaps Town in the circumstances more than happy to snatch a point with another late equaliser. Despite a very difficult pitch both teams turned on a great display. We battled for 90 minutes to stem the purple tide only succumbing to a very unfortunate own goal and an incredibly harsh penalty which meant we had to come from behind twice to force the draw with goals from an Alex free kick and a late header from Joel. I thought we were defensively very sound against the top scoring side in the league who beaten us twice already this season with ‘keeper Adam Fairchild deservedly earning the Man of the Match with a number of great stops. The draw was not earned without a cost with injuries to Ant Whelan and Andy Gillespie probably both ruled out tonight. Apart from the Widnes game I feel we have generally acquitted ourselves well against teams in the top six over the 4 games in 8 days so hopefully that is a good sign for the future. Right now we look forward to a demanding four game end to the season which will stretch a small squad to the limit. Let's hope we can get start the run in with three points tonight. Alan Gillespie

League News 1874 Northwich have announced that Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison have been appointed as Joint Managers of the Football Club. A club statement said: "They have held the reins since Ian Street’s resignation last month and have quickly set about their task with great enthusiasm and commitment. "Following a number of discussions, where Paul and Wayne have highlighted their ideas for the future, we would like to wish them well with their plans to move us forward in the future". League Landmarks Monday 10th April 2017 Abbey Hey reached 900 League points with their 1-1 draw at Abbey Hey. Tuesday 11th April 2017 1874 Northwich's 2-0 win over Maine Road was their 50th home League win. Wednesday 12th April 2017 Daisy Hill's 3-2 win over Atherton LR was their 200th home League win.

Prestwich Heys' opening goal in the 3-2 win at Bacup Borough, scored by Michael Itela in the 7th minute, was Heys' 300th League goal. Saturday 15th April 2017 Chadderton's 1-0 win at Carlisle City was their 200th away League win. Fans of Runcorn Linnets were asked to wear yellow last Saturday, when the first team entertained Maine Road in The Hallmark Security League Premier Division, in memory of former Runcorn Town junior footballer Charlie Lunt. In March 2015, Charlie (then aged nine) was diagnosed with two types of cancer; neuroblastoma (usually found in under 5s) and pheochromocytoma (normally found in over 40s). Charlie stayed true to his on the pitch nickname, 'Tank' and underwent months of chemotherapy battling against his illness. Unfortunately a new site developed and the cancer further spread to his lungs. Charlie 'Tank' Lunt sadly passed away on April 15th 2016 aged 10 after a year-long rollercoaster ride. Charlie was a gentle soul and in his memory funds are being raised to help the three children's cancer charities, which supported Charlie and his family throughout their journey - James Apter Friendship Fund, CHICS (Children's Cancer Support Group) and the Owen McVeigh Foundation. A small allocation of tickets for the general public are available for Reusch Challenge Cup Final between City of Liverpool and Sandbach United to be played on Monday 1st May 2017 at Runcorn Linnets FC , kick off 300pm. The final is all ticket event with the capacity being set at 1,200 and there will be no sales on the gate on the day. Why sponsor Town? When I told a friend that I’d sponsored town for £100, they looked at me askance and asked “why? You haven’t got a business, you don’t need the (excellent) publicity” and in a way that summed up one of the main reasons for actually doing it. I’m a St Helens lad through and through, born and bred and proud of it! The town has taken a few knocks over the years, with probably a few more to come in the current age of austerity, but the town has had its share of highlights especially in the sporting arena. Saints obviously take the limelight in terms press space but we’ve had plenty of other bright spots in many sports. One of these I was privileged enough to witness, at Wembley on the 25th of April 1987 when Town beat Warrington. £5 for a ticket sat just a couple of rows behind the Royal Box, best spec I’ve ever had at Wembley and I’ve been there a few times! A great game, some good goals and a fantastic result! However, as a young lad my first loves were really Saints and, because my dad and his dad were Reds, Liverpool FC. My interest in Town started after visiting my grandmother, who lived on Carnegie Crescent and, as a young lad in the mid 70s, whenever I had spare time on a Saturday, which wasn’t much with my own sporting activities, I’d jump on the 27A, visit “mother” and she’d feed me and give me a couple of bob and I’d make my way home. Until one day on leaving her flat, I heard a bit of noise from past the Boilermakers which drew me down Hoghton Road (and over the fence I have to say). Ever since then I catch the, very, occasional game but would always look out for the results and read match reports. As I grew older and gained responsibilities, work and family, my time became scarce and I stopped watching football as a live spectator and started to become a telepubby! But as my kids got older I started to take them to Anfield, first for the odd European game as a birthday treat and then more regularly. I’ve had some good memories of watching Liverpool with them especially with my son in Istanbul. However, after having a hip replaced earlier last summer during my time off from work recuperating I managed to catch three or four “home” games at Brocstedes Park, even dragging my son for the FA cup game against Atherton Collieries and I got a little bit of a flutter. However normality returned and time constraints and the lure of bright lights of Anfield brought this particular dalliance to a close. This close season as I was paying for my season ticket at Anfield, a mind blowing £834, I started to mull over the situation. How can I, in all sincerity, justify spending that amount of money on a club that, to be honest, doesn’t need to charge those prices in order to maintain its flawed business model. To sit in a stadium that, apart from three or four games a season, is frankly a library, and is increasingly filling with customers who are the cash cows for corporation and don’t really have a connection with the club.

My visits to Town have been to watch players who, whilst they may harbour ambitions of playing pro in the prem, are holding down jobs or getting an education and dealing with real life. Playing a game for love and enjoyment and watched by people who care, not just about their club, but about the game and also the communities that they live. A club like town is so much more than a football club. It provides focus for young and old, players and supporters alike and it provides hope and opportunity. So returning to the question asked in the first paragraph, no, I don’t get publicity from the money I’ve spent, but I do get a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that I’ve helped the club keep its head above water and bring it closer to a return home to St Helens. I could and should probably do more, as should a lot of other people, to be a part of securing the long term future, this is a start for me, hopefully others can do the same.
