Talk of the Town Good afternoon, and welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League, First Division contest against Atherton LR. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It’s been just over a week since we were last here hosting Chadderton who came into the game in great form having won four of their previous six contests and came into the on the back of a 7-0 victory on the previous Saturday against AFC Blackpool. It was always going to be a difficult contest against an outfit who had already secured a 5-3 success at Volair Park in the FA Vase back in September Town having been two goals to the good early in the contest that afternoon. A poor start to the game last week saw Town fall behind on 15 minutes when Samuel Gibson netted and with half an hour on the clock the visitors doubled their lead as Luke Heron somehow kept the ball in, the Town backline had stopped and the winger took advantage of their generosity firing home from an acute angle and the visitors went into the break in a comfortable position. Chadderton sat back at the start of the second half and allowed Town to have possession in the less dangerous before pressing quickly snuffing out dangerous attacks as they occurred making it a frustrating night for the hosts. The visitors put the game beyond doubt with 10 minutes remaining when Vincent Howell took advantage of some more poor defending to net a third. Town had a couple of good penalty shouts which were turned down before Joel Douglas poked a consolation home but the visitors were well worthy of their victory on the evening.

So we move on to this afternoons contest against Atherton LR, the visitors have been struggling of late having won just once in their last ten matches against Eccleshall back at the start of February scoring five and conceding eighteen times in these games. Their recent results have been more promising having just by just one goal against City of Liverpool, Whitchurch, AFC Blackpool & table toppers Litherland REMYCA last Saturday. Alan, Lee and the lads will be under no illusion that this afternoons contest will be a difficult one as we look to get the busy month of April off to the best possible start. Town will be looking to avenge a 4-2 reverse at Crilly Park at start of September. As mentioned April will be a busy month with nine games to fit in before the end of the season and with a push on the play off places almost mathematically beyond us and the relegation trap door off in the distance we will be looking to finish this the last season “away from home” with as many points as we can and as high up the league ladder as possible. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today Laburnum Rovers were founded in 1956 by Joe Riley as an under 14s side and after a difficult first season in the local Briarcroft Junior League, they went on to enjoy much success in League and Cup competitions. Joe was persuaded to carry on into Senior football and after a brief spell in the Leigh League the club joined the Bolton Combination. More success followed, but the ground at Hag Fold prevented further progress so a farmers field was found and despite footpath criss-crossing and duck ponds either side, hard work by everyone at the club turned this unpromising field into a football pitch. In 1966 the club moved into its new ground and were able to take their place in Division One of the Combination. Jack Crilly succeeded Joe as Chairman and worked tirelessly for the club, supervising the erection of new changing rooms (an improvement on the old air raid shelters they had been using) and a small social club. Jack died suddenly in 1980 and as a tribute to the work he did the ground was renamed from Greendale to Crilly Park. In the summer of 1980 the club joined the non-league pyramid when their application to join the Cheshire County League was successful. A stipulation of the League was that the towns name had to be in the clubs title, so links with the past were retained with the new name of Atherton Laburnum Rovers. In 1982 the club became founder members of the North West Counties League, being placed in division two until the league was reorganised in 1987 when ongoing ground improvements saw them placed in division one. 1989 saw floodlights erected and the club enter the FA Cup for the first time, while in 1991 the changing rooms and clubhouse were completely rebuilt. Towards the end of 1990/91 season Dave Morris took over as team manager and it was the start of the best period in the clubs history. In 1992/93 the club won the League title with 106 points from 42 games and also won the League Championship Trophy. Promotion to the Unibond League was denied them because of grading requirements, but undaunted the club repeated their double the following season as well as reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase. This time the club was promoted to the Unibond League. Two good seasons saw steady progress, but then financial troubles struck and the club was relegated for the first time in its history. Three seasons of struggle back in the North West Counties League culminated with the relegation to Division Two. However, the appointment of Alan Lord as manager saw a remarkable turnaround in form and nine successive victories helped the club win back promotion to Division One at the first attempt. In November 2002 Tom Foster and Dennis Haslem took over as managers after having to rebuild the team from scratch, they secured Division One football for another season. Dennis moved on in the summer and Ian Street joined the club. A period of stability and success followed but at the end of 2004/05 season Foster and Street left the club to be replaced by Mike Lester and Darren Ford, They set about building a new squad but, in February 2006, Lester and Ford resigned sparking a difficult time for the club on the pitch with no less than six managers at the helm over the next two years. The most successful period came in spring 2007 under Roy Sweeney when the club moved away from

Atherton LR the relegation zone after doubling its points total from 21 to 42 in the final two months of the season. Sweeney resigned in December 2007, with Malcolm Anderton taking temporary charge for four months until ex-LR player and Leigh RMI manager Stuart Humphreys was brought in to ensure the club retained its top division status and it was fortunate that 21st place was enough. With changes elsewhere in the pyramid system meaning LR avoided relegation at the end of 07/08 season, the club brought in Dave Hughes as the new manager with a brief to keep the team in the Premier Division while the club was reorganised behind the scenes. Hughes brought in a very experienced coaching team and set about building a squad which has proved very successful. The season ended with one of the highest league placings for several years, victory in the Goldline Trophy and another Reebok appearance in the Hospital Cup final. This season the side had a promising opening to the campaign recording another FA Cup giant-killing before injuries took a severe toll, with the team battling in the relegation dogfight. Victory once again in the Goldline Trophy Final gave the team enough belief to collect the points they needed to stay in the Premier Division. Dave Hughes resigned as manager at the beginning of September 2010 and the position was immediately offered to the Head Coach Glenn Moses to ensure stability within the team. Moses led the club to its third Goldline Final in three years and one of our highest league placings for several years but unfortunately further instability followed at the end of that season with the manager and most of the team moving on to pastures new. At short notice former player Phil Priestley took the reins and with barely two weeks to build a squad from scratch before the season began it always appeared an uphill struggle. Despite some battling performances LR succumbed to relegation, and the 2012/13 season in Division One was also a challenge, despite some outstanding performances which saw the team beat all the leading lights including West Didsbury, Formby and Darwen over the course of the campaign. 2013/14 opened under new management as Michael Clegg was appointed and the season brought real encouragement on the pitch as the side secured a top eight finish with some tremendous performances, although off the pitch the club was plunged into mourning following the sudden death of long-term supporter Eddie Taylor - the Man with the Rattle. At the end of the season Clegg departed for Atherton Collieries and the club appointed another former player Ross McNair, to be assisted by the hugely-experienced former Ashton Athletic and Colls supremo Steve Pilling. After an encouraging 2014/15 season where LR spent most of the season in the play off places only to fall away at the business end of the season. Ross had to step down due to work commitments at the end of the campaign and the club moved to appoint brothers Adam & Craig Jones from Stoneclough as joint managers but the club struggled and finished the campaign second bottom of the table. For the 2016/17 season Shaun Lynch has taken the role of manager while bringing in ex LR player James McMullen as his assistant manager. Chairman’s Notes Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League First Division game with visitors Atherton LR. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own followers have had a safe journey here and are treated to an entertaining encounter. Many thanks to today’s match sponsors Wilf Marshall who is raising awareness of a St Helens based animal charity North West Dog Rescue (www.findingfureverhomes.org.uk) and today’s match ball sponsors John Cahill - your continued support is much appreciated.

come back on a regular basis.

It’s our first Saturday afternoon home fixture for some time but we’ve been delighted with our Thursday night experience and a win, a draw and a defeat in the last three games have given great value to the supporters in attendance. Something I hope will encourage people to Work continues at Ruskin Drive and the arrival of the dressing room buildings is immanent now that all the extensive ground works have been completed. I attended the U18s game last Sunday and it was great to see a decent crowd making use of the 200seater stand - hopefully the start of the 2017-18 season will see some new faces support the club and a few old faces make a long awaited return.

I am on the look out for a match (£100) and ball (£50) sponsor for the City of Liverpool fixture on Good Friday 14th April, 3pm. It’s should be a bumper crowd and it coincides with the opening day of the Prescot Cables Beer Festival! If you’re interested give me a call on 07713 339 682 or see me at today’s game. Next Thursday evening we entertain promotion hopefuls Whithurch Alport (6th April) and then it’s a quick turnaround as we make the short trip to another team looking to make the automatic promotion places, Widnes FC (Sat 8th April). It’s going to be a busy April with nine fixtures to complete in four weeks! Tomorrow afternoon sees our U18s in North West Youth Alliance action as they host Vauxhall Motors U18s at Ruskin Drive, kick off 3pm. Our U21s have an early start (11am) over on the Wirral as they take on West Kirby in the Cheshire FA U21s League and our Liverpool & District Sunday League side travel to Oak Tree United looking for three league points. Enjoy this afternoon’s game and hopefully the lads can collect three points. John McKiernan Chairman St Helens Town AFC

Ruskin Drive News More disappointment as the wait continues for Town's return to St Helens. Club officials met with the Council last Friday (3rd February) and it has now been confirmed that the work required to meet the FA Ground Grading will not be completed until mid-May 2017. While the ground is currently being used by the club’s U18s, U21s and Sunday teams the prolonged delays to the completion of the new dressing room facilities and a problem with the height of the pitch perimeter fence have left the club frustrated that the first team will have an extended wait to make a return home. The delay will mean a number of issues for Town including the need to secure alternative playing facilities for next season to ensure they do not fall foul of the FA and NWCFL ground requirements. As the Ruskin Drive Sports ground will not be in a position to be inspected by the 31st March deadline the club needs to have a ground sharing agreement in place at a suitable alternative ground to maintain their membership of the league and guarantee entry to FA competitions. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘The news is very disappointing and a real blow to our plans. We’ve relied on the good will and support of a number of clubs over the past six years and are indebted to those clubs in ensuring the survival of the club – their assistance should not be underestimated.’

He added, ‘If we accept that the new ground will be ready in May the reality is that we will never need to utilise any ground sharing agreement but it still has to be in place or we could be in serious trouble.’ The club will also lose out on a lucrative fixture as part of the NWCFL Easter weekend Ground Hop. Town were due to host promotion chasing City of Liverpool at Ruskin Drive as the second of three Ground Hop fixtures in the area on Easter Sunday which would have seen up to 300 ‘hoppers’ part of a likely four-figure crowd. Mr McKiernan added, ‘We had expected to be on the new ground some time earlier this season but delays have shifted from weeks to months. The loss of the Ground Hop fixture is both hugely disappointing and financially disastrous, losing the club thousands of pounds. ‘Given our opposition the City of Liverpool FC, who are very well supported, hundreds of ground hoppers and a lot of local interest this was guaranteed to be bumper crowd and an ideal way to showcase the club and the new Ruskin Drive Sports Ground facility. ‘Unfortunately, we had no other option but to inform the league that we would not be able to participate in the Ground Hop programme.’

Match Report Quickfire Rigby double puts paid to Stockport Town

Two goals in three minutes early in the second half by Ste Rigby gave St. Helens Town a deserved 2-0 win over Stockport Town. by Glyn Jones Two goals in three minutes early in the second half by Ste Rigby gave St. Helens Town a deserved 2-0 win over Stockport Town in a feisty encounter at Volair Park on Thursday evening. To quote a muchused football phrase, it was a “game of two halves”, the first 45 minutes being as dull as dishwater, producing only one chance of note, Joel Douglas’s goal-bound header hitting two defenders at point-blank range after 20 minutes. The second half was totally different, mainly due to Stockport’s sense of injustice surrounding the award of a free-kick which led indirectly to Rigby’s opening goal. The players had barely emerged for the second half when a challenge on the half-way line saw a Stockport player go in hard for the ball with Alex Gillespie. The force of the challenge on the ball knocked Gillespie off his feet and the referee, some distance away, awarded the home side a freekick. The ball was moved quickly upfield and found Rigby (pictured below) unmarked. His superb chest down and shot with his right foot left the visiting ‘keeper Dan Whiting looking over his shoulder as the ball dropped into the net and Town were 1-0 up inside 52 minutes. The reaction on the Stockport bench was one of disbelief. Recently appointed manager Dave Wild, still smarting from the award of the free-kick, reacted angrily, but worse was to come. His side, unbeaten since January and with an outside chance of the promotion playoff places, suddenly found themselves two goals down, as Rigby again found the net, as he lobbed Whiting from just outside the box out three minutes later. Two goals up, St. Helens have a fine record of their own this year and though Stockport shut up shop at the back after the second goal went in, Town were in no mood to surrender their own clean sheet and the remaining 35 minutes turned into a pulsating 35 minutes of midfield battle, with neither side giving an inch. There was an unfortunate undercurrent of anger, at times, which resulted in a brief incident which involved a number of players from both sides running in, but order was quickly restored. However, Stockport player Aaron Dwyer did receive his marching orders near the end for a second yellow card after a reckless challenge. Some ugly scenes followed the final whistle as tempers flared among the Stockport players and coaching staff and the teams had to leave the field separately, with the officials sandwiched in the middle, so keenly had this contest been fought. In fact, St. Helens now find themselves three points behind Stockport with a game in hand and the two teams are yet to meet at Lambeth Grove on 22nd April. It promises to be quite a game! Celebrating 70 years, 1946-2016

FA Vase In this, the final installment, we look back to the build-up to the Final itself. Town had had no previous experience of a major cup final, especially not of a national competition, culminating in a Wembley appearance. The FA had been planning the last two stages since the quarter-finals had been completed early in March and a brochure was produced for the semi-finals, with full details of all four clubs involved, namely Emley, St. Helens Town, Collier Row and Warrington Town. Local television in the North West gave much publicity to both Town and Warrington on the build-up to the semi-finals, but in the weeks leading up to the Final, St. Helens Town cut their own record – “Town’s Triumph” - the Wembley kit was sponsored by St. Helens Glass and Pilkingtons cover the cost of the Wembley suits. Warrington Town produced a brochure to mark the occasion. St. Helens Town had never attracted huge crowds and, when the Saints also qualified for the RL Challenge Cup Final (eventually losing to Halifax by a single point), the hard-pressed fans, in the middle of a recession, had the choice of only one Wembley visit, either to follow Town on 25th April, or the Saints the following Saturday. St. Helens, like Warrington, has always been a rugby town, so the great majority chose to follow the Saints on 2nd May, to the detriment of Town. The crowd, 4254, was to be the smallest in FA Vase Final history. The squad assembled early on the day before the final, first visiting Pilkingtons’ head office, then on to the Town Hall, where the mayor gave them a civic blessing before the team coach departed at 10.30am for the journey to the team hotel at Watford. Those selected to play in the Final retired early to bed, whilst the unsuccessful players had a quiet night out. Come the day of the Final, the squad had a late breakfast and then set off for the Empire Stadium, where they arrived at 1.45pm. Whilst the St. Helens team had been settled for some time, there was uncertainty in the Warrington camp and one question to be decided was whether former Town player Jimmy Woodyer would be lining up against his former teammates. The St. Helens Town team was as follows: 1 Andy Johnston, Age 19, Goalkeeper, Civil Servant, Wigan Athletic 2 Paul Benson, Age 32, Full back, Electrician, Ellesmere Port 3 Paul Wilson, Age 25, Full back, Applications Engineer, Ashton Town 4 Barry Lowe, Age 34, Centre back, Factory Manager, Ashton United 5 John Bendon, Age 32, Centre back, Train Driver, South Liverpool, Witton Albion, Bangor 6 Marty Cummins, Age 21, Midfield, Bricklayer, Cearnarfon Town, Bootle, Rhyl 7 Tommy O’Neil, Age 35, Midfield, Captain, Concrete Batcher, Manchester Utd, Southport, Tranmere, Halifax T 8 Jimmy Collins, Age 22, Midfield, Assembly Worker, Derby County 9 Brian Rigby, Age 27, Striker, Bingo Manager, Bangor City, Sully, Barry Town 10 Jay McComb, Age 26, Midfield, Street Mason, Pavior S Liverpool, Witton Albion, Southport, Formby 11 Phil Layhe, Age 27, Striker, Electrician, Widnes League 12 Mark Gledhill, Age 27, Midfield, Sales Representative, Preston North End, South Liverpool 13 John Deakin, Age 20, Utility, Delivery Driver, Wigan Athletic, South Liverpool

1986-7 Revisited The day of the Final was very hot and sunny. The team coach left their Watford hotel for the old “Twin Towers” arriving, as planned, at 1.45pm. With just over an hour to kill, both sets of players stretched their legs on the Wembley turf and greeted their fans, St. Helens supporters at the tunnel end. Then, back to the dressing rooms and the final preparations could begin. The St. Helens Town team was Andy Johnston, Paul Benson, Paul Wilson, Barry Lowe, John Bendon, Marty Cummins, Tommy O’Neil, Jimmy Collins (sub. Mark Gledhill), Brian Rigby, Jay McComb and Phil Layhe. The manager was Alan Wellens. Warrington Town, managed by Dave Taylor, were represented by John O’Brien, Kevin Gratton, Ian Reid, Gordon Hunter, Peter Copeland, Neil Cook, Stephen Hughes, Ian Kinsey, Derek Brownbill (sub. Jimmy Woodyer), Damien Looker (sub. Tony Hill) and Neil Whalley. Kinsey and Woodyer were former St. Helens Town players. Warrington played in yellow shirts and blue shorts, whilst St. Helens appeared in blue shirts and white shorts. St. Helens Town’s usual colours were blue and white, right up to their move to Knowsley Road in 2000 when, in line with the formation of Sporting Club St. Helens Limited, the decision was taken to switch to red and white stripes. The referee was Mr. Trelford Mills of Barnsley.

The arrangements for the afternoon’s proceedings were set out to the minute by the FA. St. Helens had the North Dressing Room, Warrington the South. At 2.48pm precisely the players and managers were to leave the dressing rooms and assemble in the tunnel, followed by the referee and linesmen (as they were known then) and, on a given signal, all were to proceed across the field of play, St. Helens lining up behind a blue flag and Warrington behind a yellow flag. The teams then had to turn to face each other and stand ready for their presentation to the Chief Guest, Ted Drake. After the presentation, the National Anthem was played, the bandmaster having waited for a signal to begin and then the players could “kick about” until the referee called the captains together. The referee had to wait until Mr. Drake had taken his seat in the Royal Box. So much for protocol, the game kicked off two minutes late but began at a breathtaking pace. St. Helens’ captain Tommy O’Neil, ex-Manchester United and 35 years old, set up the first goal after only 4 minutes when, after chasing Barry Lowe’s through ball, he crossed from the left to enable Phil Layhe to head home. Layhe himself crossed from the right four minutes later for Brian Rigby to stretch the lead to 2-0. Warrington played much better after the interval and Ian Reid reduced the arrears after 54 minutes. Phil Layhe restored the two-goal advantage shortly afterwards – his ninth goal of the Vase campaign – before Neil Cook scored for Warrington a minute from time to set up a tense finish. However, St. Helens hung on at the end and it was a proud Tommy O’Neill who climbed the 39 steps to receive the Vase from the former Arsenal centre-forward and Chelsea manager, Ted Drake. Glyn Jones

A Brief History The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged Tommy O’Neil over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record Wembley,1987 attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An alltime club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April

of St Helens Town

St Helens Town 1948 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent mid-season form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early -season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30 th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

League News Those in attendance at West Didsbury and Chorlton’s home game with Abbey Hey on Sunday may have noticed several new faces in charge of the day’s proceedings, as young players from the club's junior section took over the match day hospitality. The juniors took on all elements of running a football club, welcoming spectators upon arrival at the gate, selling the match-day programme and half time draw tickets. The juniors even took over the tannoy, reading out the teams as others sold sweets and merchandise on a stall pitch-side. In addition, two players were honorary secretaries for the day as they exchanged team sheets with Manager Steve Settle, Abbey Hey Secretary Tony McAllister and Referee Richard Holmes. At kick off, 18 mascots ran out with the team, joined the respect handshake, taking part in the coin toss, led by club Captain Mark Rogers. During the game, the mascots then took over as ball boys, before entertaining the crowd at half time with a penalty shoot-out with some superb finishing and fine goalkeeping in equal abundance. After the game, the juniors were treated to a Q&A session in the Rob Turley Stand with West manager Steve Settle, grilling him on the finer details of management from diet to mid-match tactical changes. The Junior Takeover Day drew West’s second highest attendance of the season as 350 spectators turned up, with many parents and family members in attendance . Chairman Glyn Meacher said; “It was a terrific day for the juniors. “Aside from the tremendous effort they put in with such a big crowd, we’ve had numerous people get in touch about wishing to join West’s Junior section. In four years we’ve gone from four teams to 13, and having had so many positive headlines for our first team, I’m delighted that the Juniors are now enjoying the same.” Thurs, 27th July, 2017 11am at Haydock Library, Church Road, Haydock WA11 0LY A talk by Glyn Jones of St. Helens Town Football Club on The Old Football Grounds of St. Helens Town and Haydock C & B illustrated by resource materials and memorabilia. Vice-Chairman and Club Historian will deliver a talk on the former football grounds of the St. Helens Town clubs at Park Road (1901-1928) and Hoghton Road, Sutton (1947-2000), also the old Station Road ground used by the former Haydock Cricket & Bowls Football Club, using materials supplied by the St. Helens Council’s Libraries section, also the St. Helens Town Football Club and the family of the late Eric Bond. Match Report v Another excellent game at Volair Park as Town and Alsager battle out a thrilling 2-2 draw. by Glyn Jones Match report sponsored by Top Car Detailing It was always going to be an uphill battle, facing a strong Alsager team, pushing hard for promotion, without the benefit of a game for nearly three weeks and having to cover for the suspended trio of captain Andy Gillespie, Dale Korie-Butler and Eddie Pegler, but once again, Town turned in a spirited performance and just when it appeared they might slip to an unfortunate defeat, they snatched a draw in a rousing finish. The game was a physical battle from the outset, with bone-crunching tackles the order of the day. That no player was injured was surprising in itself, but there were few complaints as both sets of players got stuck into the battle, which warmed up both participants and crowd on a chill night at Volair Park. Without leading scorer Andy Gillespie, Town fielded debutant Joel Douglas, who acquitted himself very well and, once the rustiness of 19 days without a game had begun to wear off and wings Ste Rigby and Luke Edwards began to push forward, assisted by Paul Carney in midfield, the home side began to make up for lost ground and gain the ascendency. Their patience was rewarded after 35 minutes with a move begun by Edwards, which involved quick passes between several players, eventually finding full-back Dom Whelan one-on-one with Alsager keeper Chris Fletcher on the edge of his six-yard box and as Whelan shaped to shoot, Fletcher

Alsager Town upended him and a penalty was awarded, which Rigby confidently despatched to put Town 1-0 up heading into half-time. The goal transformed the complexion of the game as, suddenly, Alsager were on the back foot. They emerged from the dressing room after the break much more determined and took a firm grip of the proceedings, launching wave after wave of attack and Adam Fairchild pulled off two magnificent saves and saw another shot sail just past his right-hand post. His luck finally ran out, however, in the 72nd minute when, from a corner, veteran striker Micky Lennon blasted a shot which Mark Grice deflected in off the same post and past Fairchild to level the scores at 1-1. Alsager were in almost total control at this stage and looked set to take the lead shortly afterwards until Andy Presho cleared impressively off his line. Town manager freshened up his troops and sent on George Ukaegbu for Douglas, the speedy Anthony Dunleavy soon followed, together with Michael Chojnicki and the injection of fresh legs and pace breathed new life into the game. Almost immediately, Dunleavy sprinted through and combined with Ukaegbu to set up an opening for Rigby and he looked certain to score, but the ball curled just over the bar. Then it was Carney’s turn and he went through the defence on a mesmerising run, only for his shot to be blocked and Edwards hit the rebound over the bar.

The match entered its last minute and, as in the previous home game, a dramatic finale was to be played out. This time, against the run of play, Alsager broke from deep inside their own half and Dave McPherson finished off an 80-yard move by scoring what looked to be the winning goal. However, the visitors had not reckoned with the fighting spirit of this St. Helens team. Deep into the fourth minute of added time, a break down the right saw a ball played over the top of the defenders to Liam Dodd, who drew the advancing Fletcher and lobbed him from 20 yards, the ball nestling in the back of the net to secure another remarkable draw which, in the circumstances, felt almost like a victory. Town are looking to raise funds by opening a souvenir shop at forthcoming games. If anyone has old Town programmes and memorabilia, please contact Glyn Jones on 07504 231296 or call up to Volair Park (Hope Street) Prescot on match days, when your offerings will be thankfully received and faithfully applied to fit out the facilities at the new ground ready for next season. The shop will be in operation in the bar area before all remaining home games this season.

Match Report v SLICK CHADDERTON JUST TOO GOOD FOR TOWN St. Helens Town 1, Chadderton 3 by Glyn Jones St. Helens Town staged their now customary late Thursday night comeback against inform Chadderton at Volair Park, but this time they had given themselves far too much to do and the visitors from Oldham ran out comfortable 3 -1 winners. The sides had already met at Prescot back in September when Chadderton fought back from 2-0 down to dump Town out of the FA Vase by 5 goals to 3 in a game which was best remembered for a series of defensive blunders by the home side, but this Chadderton side arrived on the back of a run of 7 wins from the last 10 games and lost no time setting about showing their attacking prowess, establishing a two-goal lead with two great strikes in the first half hour, which caught Town cold. The first goal came after 15 minutes, Sam Gibson giving Adam Fairchild no chance in the Town goal after a quickfire move which left the St. Helens defence flat-footed. The second Chadderton strike was even better, Luke Heron finding back-spin on a ball which everyone appeared to think looked bound to cross the by-line for a harmless goal-kick, then blasting the spinning ball past Fairchild to double his side’s lead. Almost immediately from the re-start, Joel Douglas, who had toiled hard throughout the half without any success, was unfortunate to see his shot land on the top of the Chadderton net with keeper Michael Smith beaten. Town did regain some ground in the remaining 15 minutes of the first-half, but the visitors’ defence looked virtually impregnable until, right on the whistle, Luke Edwards unleashed a spectacular drive which rattled the left- hand post. The second period was a really good contest and, as time wore on, developed into an absorbing end-to-end game. There was an intriguing individual duel between Ste Rigby, who has been on fire recently and Chadderton full-back Gareth Hill, who was solid for the first hour or so. Rigby then began to get the better

Celebrating 70 years, 1946-2016

Chadderton of him up the left flank and launched a series of raids, one of which very nearly produced a goal, Smith acrobatically tipping over a wellplaced shot. Three substitutes were introduced by Alan Gillespie to try to inject some pace, just as Chadderton were seemingly beginning to exhibit a few cracks: Andy Webster, fresh from becoming a father replaced Dom Whelan, Anthony Dunleavy took over from Adam Donohue and Warren Twist came on for Edwards and the big push was on. Rigby and Douglas began to find gaps and surely it was just a matter of time… Then, calamity. A stray pass found Leon Iluobe, Town’s nemesis from last season – he who, single-handedly, put St. Helens out of the First Division Trophy in extra-time at Andrew Street. He slipped the ball to Vincent Howell who rounded Fairchild and netted easily to put the visitors home and dry with nine minutes left. Town did rally. After all, it was Thursday. Rigby went very close,

then Eddie Pegler was twice denied then, when all hope seemed lost, in the 90th minute, Douglas slammed the ball home to make it 1-3. There was still time for the same player to be held down by the shoulders in the penalty box, but the referee waved away the Town players’ claims and soon afterwards, the final whistle blew. It was just about the right result, but with a little more application in the first half and without that horrible mistake in the 81st minute, things might have turned out so differently. The teams meet again at Andrew Street on Tuesday, 11th April but, in between times, Town face Atherton L.R. a week on Saturday, 1st April at Prescot, then Whitchurch Alport, at home again, on Thursday, 6th April and Widnes away on Saturday, 8th April. Promotion may be a step (or three) too far for this season, but there are yet many enjoyable games to come and the higher up the table Town finish, the better are their chances of taking part in next season’s FA Cup Qualifying rounds, so there is still much to play for.

Manager’s Notes Hi Everybody welcome to Volair Park for this afternoon’s game against our friends and rivals Atherton LR . LR are currently battling very hard to put points on the board as they fight to stay out of the two relegation slots. They put up great resistance last week at home against league leaders Litherland REMYCA and were unlucky to go home empty handed after leading in the game for 60 minutes so I'm sure they will give us a tough battle today. .

Our last home game against Chadderton was a sobering experience after some great battling performances at home. From my point of view we weren't able to get into the game 1st half when we allowed the opposing talented midfield trio run the show. Not content with that we gifted them three goals and we couldn't complain if they had added a few more. You simply cannot win games at this level defending like that. The only real positives were some good individual performances from Dom Whelan and Liam Dodd and a spirited last 10 minutes rewarded with a late goal from Joel who worked hard all the game. Luke also showed in flashes what he is capable of with a good strike that that hit the upright and maybe if that had gone in right on half time it would have given us something to build in second half but that's just ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’. To be fair Chadderton are an excellent and will be a match for any side in this division. I am very pleased to have added five players to the squad before the transfer window closed and I was especially pleased to sign Danny Lomax from Premier Division outfit Laird's 1907. Danny has played in nearly 40 games this season and his experience and ability will be a big boost to the squad. April is going to be a massive test of our ability and resources with nine games starting today so it's good to have two of our strikers Andy and Dale back available following three game suspensions although today we are without regulars Webby, Luke, Alex and striker George who has a hamstring injury. I hope everybody enjoys the game the crowd have been amazing in all the recent home games so I hope they will get behind the lads again today. Enjoy the game. Alan

League News Linnets late late show - again Once again Runcorn Linnets staged a dramatic late recovery to collect all three points from their crunch game at Bootle on Saturday. A goal down with four minutes left, Michael Simpson and Daniel McKenna then struck to clinch victory at the death, and continue Linnets’ remarkable run of scoring goals late in games. That’s now four games in a row that they have scored in the last five minutes, proving that you have to focus for the full 90 minutes and more when facing Michael Ellison’s men. Widnes in the promotion frame For several weeks now, Widnes have been steadily moving up the Division One table, grinding out victories with monotonous regularity while other promotion contenders were dropping points. Although they have lost in cup ties recently, in the league it’s a different matter, with just one defeat since the end of October, and Saturday’s win over Cheadle Town moved them into the play off positions for the first time. The First Division promotion chase looks like going right to the wire, and Joey Dunn’s men look good to be in the shake-up. Seven up for Charnock Another team in the First Division promotion chase are Charnock Richard, who banished any suggestions of a mid-season blip with a 70 win at Daisy Hill on Saturday. It was their biggest win of the season, and by definition, their record win since joining our league last summer, and more significantly moved them up into third place, just four points behind City of Liverpool and with two games in hand. With games against fellow promotion contenders Prestwich Heys and Alsager Town next up for Andy Westwell’s men, it’s look like they have rediscovered their form at exactly the right time. Home is where the heart is for the Blues Winsford United’s 4-2 win over Squires Gate on Saturday was the latest win in a fine run of form that the Blues have produced before their home supporters. They last lost at home in early December, and since then have won four and drawn one of the five home games since then, as well as a 4-0 win over 1874 Northwich at the St Luke’s Barton Stadium on Boxing Day that was actually a home game for 1874. With home games against Atherton Collieries, Bootle, Runcorn Town and 1874 Northwich all coming up in the next few weeks, the Blues’ strength at home will be tested, but their supporters can look forward to some tasty games in the run in to the end of the season. Long away day proves fruitful at last for City A fortnight ago, Carlisle City made the 170 mile trip to FC Oswestry Town, and the long journey ended with a 2-1 defeat. Other long away trips to Stockport Town, Alsager Town and Cheadle Town have also proved fruitless for James Tose’s men this season, but on Saturday, City finally emerged victorious on a long away day, winning 4-2 at Eccleshall, 163 miles down the M6. City will continue to clock up the miles in the next couple of weeks with trips to promotion chasing City of Liverpool and Sandbach United coming up, but with four of their last five games at Gillford Park, they can look forward to seeing a bit more of home from mid-April onwards.

League News Atherton Collieries have launched their first ever competition run solely for school children in the local community. The club are inviting all local schools to participate in a ‘Design a Poster’ competition. The competition is open to any pupils currently at primary or secondary school, and all participants will receive a small gift for their entry, with a prize also available for the winner. To enter, the children are being invited to create a piece of artwork representing Atherton or Atherton Collieries FC. The design could represent the current team, the history or future of the club, or even the history of Atherton itself. All designs are to be submitted to the football club before 11am on Easter Monday, and all entrants will also be entered into a separate draw to be mascots for the match against Runcorn Town on 29th April. Joe Gibbons, a member of the Colls Media Team, explained: “At the open committee meeting shortly after Christmas, it was agreed that they would do more to involve local school children in the club, as well as aiming to set up a number of youth teams in preparation for next season. On Thursday morning, volunteers from the club travelled around every Primary School in the community, delivering a competition leaflet for each individual child. “The concept of the competition has been a collaboration between first team players, volunteers and supporters. It is hoped that next week, some of the first team players will be able to give up their spare time and talk about the football club in greater depth, raising awareness of the team amongst the community’s youngsters. The winning design will appear on the matchday magazine, around the football club and on all forms of our social media. It will be selected by first team manager Michael Clegg and Chairman Paul Gregory”. On Tuesday night West Didsbury & Chorlton hosted Barnoldswick Town at Brookburn Road, and were visited by the next generation of football’s business leaders. Undergraduate football business students from UCFB were in attendance for Tuesday’s game to carry out a fan engagement questionnaire amongst West supporters, to better understand the ever increasing appeal of non-league football. Based in the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, Turf Moor in Burnley and Wembley Stadium in London, The University College Football Business’s vision is: ‘To be the world’s leading neurological centre of excellence for football business education.’ Their mission is ‘to provide best-in-class graduates with football and business expertise.’ At the game on Tuesday, the students looked at the route people take to becoming supporters, which methods of communication from the club they find most useful and how they successfully communicate with the club themselves. Another group will look at the potential for future supporter engagement of online and e-ticketing, an emerging element of the matchday experience in the professional game, and if the technology required is cost effective enough. In addition, a third group, who are also supporters of nonleague football, are working in conjunction with the Non League Paper to develop an app for live score updates. The students are led by Simon Mitton, a senior lecturer in sports business at the UCFB’s Etihad Campus based at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.
