Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Ruskin Drive. May I open by welcoming our visitors from Cammell Laird 1907. I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game.
It has been a long three weeks since we last played here hosting New Mills and going down to a 2-0 reverse a replica of the scoreline from the opening game of the season when we visited the same opponents. It is fair to say that it wasn’t a good afternoon at the office and a bad way to go into a spell of four away games in 15 days with the trap door getting closer and Town looking more and more nervously over their metaphorical shoulder. The first trip on the St Helens Town roadshow took us to the seaside to take on AFC Blackpool the following Tuesday. The trip was daunting as the hosts came into the contest of the cusp of the play-off places but after a goalless first half it was the visitors who struck first when Michael Furlong netted his second goal for the club with the previous one coming the last time Town recorded a maximum return here at Ruskin Drive against Sandbach United on 23rd December. Shaun Brady extended the lead less than 10 minutes later when he fired home his 13th goal of the season but it was to be a nervy end to the game as Martin Baird pulled one back for the hosts 5 minutes from time but Town were able to see out time and secure their first win of 2018. We then had a 9 day spell of inactivity before we started a run of three games in 6 days with another ominous trip to Prestwich

Heys another team battling for promotion as we get to the business end of the season. We had already made a trip to Adie Moran Park way back in October in Macron Cup action and were dispatched from the competition after suffering a defeat by a 4-0 scoreline and we were to fall to the same score line last Thursday evening too. We then made the trip to Bacup Borough looking to bounce back from the resounding defeat less than 48 hours earlier. The game started off well with Andy Webster heading home from a corner in the opening quarter of an hour before the hosts netted to send the sides in level at the interval. Andy Presho restored the lead for the visitors on the hour before Bacup drew level converting a spot-kick less than two minutes later. The winner was to come some 15 minutes later when a home defender turned the ball into his own net with Liam Diggle waiting to side foot home behind him as Town made it two wins in three matches and leap-frogged over their defeated opponents (albeit Bacup have several games in hand). We then took the long midweek trip to Barrow-in-Furness to take on Holker Old Boys and it was always going to be a difficult task but when nasty challenges are left to go unpunished and lads who are in work the next day aren’t protected questions need to be asked of the match officials. As I write on Thursday evening Goalkeeper Carl Williams is a doubt for the game after being on the end of disgraceful challenge and having to be replaced. As it was a single goal was enough for the hosts to secure all three points on the evening. Attentions new turn to the afternoons match as we welcome Cammell Laird 1907 to Ruskin Drive for the first time. The two team have only recently met with Town crossing over the Mersey on 6th March and coming away after a 4-0 defeat. Town will be looking to avenge that loss this afternoon and secure their first win over high-flying Lairds at the seventh time of asking! Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to a much needed victory! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

From the Chair Welcome to our visitors Cammell Laird 1907 for this Easter Saturday fixture. Although it’s only three weeks since we last had a home game, it seems like ages ago, as we’ve played four away games since the New Mills match on 10th March (assuming Wednesday’s clash at Holker went ahead) and from a standpoint when it looked as though we did not know where our next goal – let alone our next win – was coming from, we’ve turned a corner and produced a couple of impressive performances, recorded two good victories and begun to climb the table.
Whether the catalyst has been the return of Danny Greene, or a general return of confidence to the side, I know not, but once more, fortunes are looking up and it’s a bit of a shame that the end of the season is in sight! Prospects were anything but rosy when we travelled to Kirklands on 6th March to face today’s opponents, Cammell Laird 1907. An
early goal surrendered and a flat performance gave our hosts an easy 4-0 win and this was followed by a 0-2 home loss to a New Mills side who looked nothing special apart from one or two smart individuals. We then travelled to promotion -chasing AFC Blackpool on a cold Tuesday night and stunned our hosts with a terrific performance that shocked the League so much that when the results came out, the win was credited to Stockport instead of St. Helens Town. Although the result could not be repeated at Prestwich Heys, where the 4 -0 scoreline did no justice to Town’s efforts, we turned in another great performance to claim the points at Bacup last Saturday to run out 3-2 winners and change places in the table with our hosts in 19th place. A win today over Lairds would be groundbreaking. We have never beaten the team from Birkenhead in 5 previous attempts. Although they were formed, as their formal title suggests, over 100 years ago, our clubs paths never crossed until the 2005/06 season when they completed a league double over us in the NW Counties First Division, a league they took by storm on their way to a first-time promotion to the Northern Premier League. We subsequently met them again in the FA Cup in 2009/10 season after beating Colwyn Bay, but turned in a disappointing display at Kirklands to go out 3-1 in the First Qualifying Round, then our paths crossed again a few years ago in the Liverpool Senior Cup when we were ground-sharing at Ashton Athletic when, once again, we were eliminated by the Wirral side, still members of the EvoStik League.
Since then, like New Mills, they have suffered successive relegations and now find themselves in the Hallmark Security First Division, albeit chasing a play-off spot. We are unlikely to meet again next season in league football for, even if Lairds fail to gain promotion, they are likely to be placed in the First Division South whereas Town will almost certainly be allocated a position in the First Division North. There is still the chance, of course, of a meeting or two in cup football before too long. Recent signings from Lairds include our current captain Danny Lomax, Paul Cliff and Liam Dodd. Joel Douglas also joined us last season from Lairds before leaving for Litherland Remyca. Glyn Jones

I'm writing these notes on the way home from Holker in a mini bus that is very quiet to say the least but will come to that later. It seems like ages since we have played at home and please forgive me if I miss any of our results in today’s notes. We have played Lairds away in a 4-0 victory for the home side in a game again where the score-line slightly flattered our hosts. That was followed by another mid-week game at AFC Blackpool and we game away with a very pleasing 2-1 win in a game against one of the form teams and we totally deserved the three points. This was followed with another trip to Prestwich Heys in our third meeting of the season and again the score-line did not reflect the performance as we came away on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat. Another away trip beckoned this time up to Bacup Borough on a pitch which was more suited for horse racing and not football a game which I believe was one of our best battling performances of the season and to win the game 3-2 was a credit to the lads. So onto Wednesday’s trip to Holker in a game I think was evenly matched and another one in which we had the better chances but we have come away with nothing in a 10 defeat. The result hurts more because it felt like we played against 12 men as the referee has had an absolute shocker and when he even admits it to you after the game it certainly is a bitter pill to swallow. I really don't like moaning at the officials because it's a job I would not like to do - but maybe if they had played the game a bit they may have a little bit of knowledge about this sport but this one clearly didn't. The decisions made certainly impacted the score line and may well have a say in our final league position. The transfer window is now closed and we have brought Danny Greene back from Irlam, Danny is a player with so much talent and we believe he can give us that bit of a spark we require to climb the league table. Also can I wish our hospitality and committee members Paul and Margaret a speedy return to the club. Paul is having treatment for cancer at the minute and we would like to wish him all the best and like to say to Margaret...... where are my cakes? Thanks for your continued support and enjoy the game. Lee Jenkinson

Programme Sponsor In 2016 St Helens Music Blogger and Jack Russell about town Ralph responded to the clarion call by Alan McGee and Musicians Against Homelessness, organising an all-day music event in Zoo Bar, St Helens with a stellar line-up of local talent. As most will be aware by now the redoubtable Jack Russell that was Ralph sadly developed cancer and passed away last year so there was no Ralph's Life event in 2017. Well young Brian has now joined the team as the face of Ralph's Life and he's stepping up to the plate to organise another Musicians Against Homelessness event as part of their Royal Bedding Day campaign. Former Oasis manager and Musicians Against Homelessness patron Alan McGee said: "In response to the recent news that the
streets of Windsor will be cleared of homeless people MAH announce THE ROYAL BEDDING DAY on the same day as the royal wedding. We ask all of our supporters and friends to join us in putting on as many music events as possible across England, Scotland and Wales to support homeless people and to make a lot of noise! This is a call to put the focus on the poorest in our society; the number of homeless people on our streets is rapidly escalating and it’s a national disgrace. Thousands and thousands of people are in desperate situations with a recent report stating that one in every 200 people are classed as homeless or living in unsuitable accommodation." 13 bands/artistes have committed to playing The Percival Suite, Ruskin Drive and tickets are available in advance from Momo's on Cotham Street and Pop In The Attic on Corporation Street at an early bird price of just £10. A portion of the funds raised will be going to the local homelessness charity Teardrops who do amazing and tireless work in St Helens to support homeless people.

Match Report TOWN STUN BLACKPOOL WITH MAGNIFICENT VICTORY AFC Blackpool 1 St. Helens Town 2 by Glyn Jones St. Helens Town won their first game since before Christmas with a great win at AFC Blackpool last Tuesday. It was a commanding and thoroughly-deserved performance, against a team lying on the edge of the promotion play-offs and came against all the odds. The key man was Danny Greene, who had recently returned to the club following twelve months away at Irlam and he laid on both goals. Town again started well against a strangely subdued Mechanics side and their confidence gradually built throughout the first half, during which they were unlucky not to score at least one goal. Liam Diggle had a good early chance, but his shot went high over the bar, but the striker soon combined with Shaun Brady, who was unfortunate not to score from close range as the home keeper somehow scrambled the ball to safety. As the one-sided first-half drew to a close, it appeared that the visitors would take the lead, but Brady’s shot was put out for a corner from which Andy Webster almost headed in and the same player blocked the home side’s only real chance on the line to preserve Town’s clean sheet.
Charity Partner 2017-18
St. Helens stepped up a gear in the second half, realising that Blackpool were there for the taking and Dom Whelan headed only just wide of the post minutes after the restart. Carl Williams saved comfortably to keep the game scoreless as the home side tried to get a foothold into the game but as three-quarter time approached, a good pass forward from skipper Danny Lomax found unmarked Greene down the right wing, he turned two defenders and fired in a perfect cross for Mick Furlong to rise high at the far post to head home and put Town 1-0 up. Full of confidence, Town surged forward again and Diggle was inches wide with a well-hit shot from 15 yards with the goal at his mercy. St. Helens stepped up the pressure with 15 minutes remaining and Greene again found Brady with a defencesplitting ball and the wingman passed the ball into the net for Town’s second goal. Blackpool did mount a fightback in the closing stages, Martin Baird nodding home from a free-kick in the 82nd minute and Town had to survive a late scare when the home side had a goal disallowed late on for deliberate handball but they held out for a famous victory.

Match Report TOWN CLIMB THE TABLE by Glyn Jones Prestwich Heys 4, St. Helens Town 0 Bacup Borough 2, St. Helens Town 3
Two wins from three games and, more importantly, St. Helens Town have begun their move away from danger at the bottom of the First Division table. Following on from
their 2-1 win at AFC Blackpool, they lost 4-0 at Prestwich Heys on Thursday night – a four goal margin which did Town no justice – but they roared back on Saturday with an accomplished performance at Bacup with a 3-2 victory, which enabled them to overtake their hosts and move up to 19th place in the league table.
Thursday’s game at Prestwich had barely begun when Town conceded a free kick out on the left. The defence looked totally disorganised as the high ball came across and the unmarked Dom Slaven rose high to head home to give the home side the lead in the second minute. Town then settled down and although they produced no chances of their own during the remaining 43 minutes of the half, they easily coped with all that Heys threw at them. The second-half began just as the first had done and the home side doubled their lead on 48 minutes, Lee Bruce finishing well with a low shot from out on the left. Town swept back into the game and were unlucky not to pull a goal back when Shaun Brady picked up the ball on the burst, but could only find keeper Mike Smith, who saved well. Within

minutes, Danny Greene had a great chance, but once again, Smith did well to foil the Town wingman.
From what could have been a 2-2 game, the match quickly moved away from St. Helens in dramatic circumstances. Free-kicks given away in apparently harmless positions were lashed home in spectacular style by substitute John Main in the 77th and Chris Baguley in the 81st minutes and Heys had their second 4-0 league win in two days to move themselves further into promotion contention and leave Town to lick their wounds. Less than 48 hours later, Town journeyed to West View to take on Bacup Borough on their notoriously heavy pitch, but this was a St. Helens team who had put their Prestwich disappointment well behind them and they seized the game right from the off.
Charity Partner 2017-18
They had all the early pressure playing down the slope and were rewarded with a corner in the 17th minute. Danny Greene delivered a wonderful kick which caused confusion in the home box, a defender shoved his own keeper off the ball and Andy Webster was on hand at the far post to head home. Greene himself should have scored a second soon afterwards, then a Brady cross set up Alex Ashby who was unlucky not to net past the troubled home keeper. Ragged Town defence did allow Bacup to equalise through Matty Bryan five minutes before half-time, but the second-half belonged almost exclusively to the visitors. A free kick from Ashby in the 64th minute found Brady, whose shot was deflected across goal and Andy Presho headed in at the far post to restore Town’s lead at 2-1. Almost immediately, St. Helens’ keeper Carl Williams gifted Bacup a penalty, which Bryan dispatched to level the scores again, but a Danny Greene cross looked to be on its way to substitute Liam Diggle before Bacup’s Kieran Turner intervened to turn it past Karl Price into his own net to tie up the spoils at 3-2 to St. Helens in the 75th minute.

On this day In history Town have played some nineteen times on the date over a period spanning 70 years with games in the Lancashire Combination League and Cup; Cheshire League, North West Counties League and Challenge Cup. Their first meeting on this date was 70 years ago today when Town travelled to English Electric recording a 0-2 win in the Lancashire Combination Division One courtesy of goals from Thompson and Littler. Three seasons later Town made the short trip to Hinsford where despite a Billy Twist goal Town went down 2-1 in the Combination Division Two. On this date in 1953 Netherfield Reserves were the visitors to Hoghton Road in the Lancashire Combination second tier and goals from Garner, Potter and Rigby secure a 3-1 win. Town travelled to Nelson in the same competition on this date in 1956, losing 1-0. Into the 1960s and 1961 saw Town play host to Horwich RMI Reserves. Maloney, Smith, Cooke and Barnes were on the scoresheet for Town as they recorded an impressive 4-1 at Hoghton Road in the Lancashire Combination Division Two. A double from Underdown secured Town the spoils in a 1-2 away at Crompton Recreation on this date in 1962 and four years later (1966) Horwich RMI were 3-1 winners in the Lancashire Combination
Cup 3rd Round – Town’s scorer is unknown. The 1970s saw Town play on this date in five successive seasons starting in 1973 when they suffered a 1-0 defeat away at Darwen. The following season (1974) Nelson were ousted from the Lancashire Combination Cup 4-0 as goals from Aspinwall, Kendrick, Merrill ad Bull saw Town through to the semi-finals. 1974 saw Town back at Darwen and despite two goals from Plumpton the home side ran out 4-2 winners in the Lancashire Combination top flight. By 1976 it was Cheshire League action for Town and Marine proved the opposition for the first of successive seasons – Marine ran out 1-0 winners in 1976 and a season later a goal from Culley earned Town a share of the points in a 1-1 at Hoghton Road. The run of games on this date during the 1970s finished with a home fixture against Radcliffe Borough (1979) when goals from Maguire and Robinson earned a win for Town in the Cheshire League Division One. On this date in 1984 it was Radcliffe Borough who was back at Hoghton Road this time exacting revenge with a 0-4 victory in the North West Counties League. Two seasons later (1986) and Clitheroe was the venue for another NWCFL game – Rigby was on target for Town but the Shawebridge outfit ran out 3-1 winners. The FA Vase winning year (1987) saw Town host neighbours Burscough in the NWCFL League Cup 4th Round and it was the visitors who progressed with a 3-5 win. Town’s goals came from Benson, Collins J, and Layhe. It would be a further decade before a fixture on this date as Town lost 2-1 to Maine Road at Brantingham Road in the NWCFL Division One. Ian Street hit Town’s reply from the penalty spot. It was back to NWCFL top flight action on this date in 2007 and goals from Ledsham and Dyson secured a 2-0 win over Silsden at Prescot Cables. The last time out on this date (2009) Town hosted Formby edging out their visitors 1-0 in a tight game – Jones hitting the only goal fifteen minutes from time in the NWCFL Premier Division.

St Helens Mind Tracy takes the plunge for St. Helens Mind St. Helens Mind is an independent local charity, supporting people in St. Helens Borough who are experiencing isolation or loneliness due to mental health difficulties. One local lady, Tracy Wilde, is keen to help us by raising much needed funds, enabling us to maintain and grow our services. Tracy is a busy mum of two grown up children ages 31 and 23. She works with young people ages 16-25 who are transitioning from full time care to independence. She will be jumping from an aeroplane on April 3 rd, her 50th birthday, and is seeking sponsorship. Can you help? Tracy tells us: “I love my job and thrive on the challenges it brings. Many years ago I was diagnosed by my GP with depression, which at times did have me in a bit of a mess. I worked through it to the best of my ability which some days was not easy, it’s a terrible thing to have and many, many people struggle unknown to others. I have always wanted to do a sky-dive but never quite could afford it or had the passion/confidence and now I do. I have tied this in with hopefully raising some money for St. Helens Mind. Charities like this are
Charity Partner 2017-18
essential in communities so that people feel they can get involved in local groups, befriending and other supportive activities I am now living without the dark cloud of depression but make a conscious choice to make the most of my life and the people around me. I truly believe that charities like St.H elens Mind play an important part in the people’s lives that gain support from them.” Can you help? If you would like to support Tracy by sponsoring her Skydive for St. Helens Mind, please visit her fundraising page by searching for ‘Tracy Wilde Skydive’ on the Virgin Money Giving website.

Town Archive The first-leg of the Semi-Final was at Hoghton Road on 21st March 1987. The first day of Spring produced a wonderful, sunny Sutton afternoon and the majority of the crowd of 2028 assembled in anticipation of a home win. Unfortunately, the Town players appeared to let the occasion get the better of them and it was Emley who seized the initiative: The Yorkshire-side’s left back, Willie Carpenter made a break and sent over a cross which eluded Barry Lowe and the unfortunate Paul Wilson could only help the ball into his own net. 0-1 was the score at 90 minutes, the only occasion in 12 games in the Vase that Town failed to score. Team: Andy Johnston Paul Benson, Paul Wilson, Barry Lowe, John Bendon; Marty Cummins, Tommy O’Neil, Jimmy Collins, Brian Rigby, Jay McComb and Phil Layhe. Subs: Mark Gledhill and John Deakin. Res: Bryan Griffiths. The second leg took place seven days later at the Welfare Ground in Emley, a village between Huddersfield and Wakefield. Following a week of deteriorating weather, the pitch was in a dreadful state, but the game passed an early morning inspection, thanks mainly to a strong, drying wind. John Bendon missed the game through injury and a reshuffling by manager Alan Wellens moved Paul Benson from left to centre back, with Tommy O’Neil reverting to the position he had held many years before in his Manchester United days. Mark Gledhill came into midfield. There was a crowd of well over 3000 packed into the tight ground but despite the home side having the majority of the support, it was Town
Charity Partner 2017-18
who took the initiative after the initial Emley onslaught. However, there was no score at the break. The second half began with Town still looking to level the tie and they did not have to wait long for Gledhill to score from 12 yards. Town exerted further pressure and Phil Layhe had a shot cleared in the list minute, but from the resulting corner, Paul Benson headed past the home keeper, only for the ball to be handled on the line by full-back Carpenter. Into injury time, Jimmy Collins took the resulting penalty, but the home ‘keeper easily gathered the mis-hit shot and the referee blew the final whistle. Extra-time again and all to play for. 8 minutes into the first period, Brian Rigby headed home Jimmy Collins’ cross and put Town ahead in the tie. All hands to the pumps, as St. Helens weathered the storm until the final 3 minutes when the referee awarded a home penalty following a foul from Paul Wilson which he clearly thought was outside the area. Nevertheless the award stood and up ran Steve Codd, who dispatched the ball with great force for the top corner. The crowd gasped but Andy Johnston jumped like a salmon to deflect the ball past the post and deny the home side the spoils of war. It was a majestic conclusion to an epic battle. Team: Johnston, O’Neil, Wilson, Lowe, Benson; Cummins, Gledhill, J. Collins, Rigby, McComb and Layhe. Subs: Deakin and Tony Williams. Scorers: Gledhill and Rigby. Town had done it, against all the odds! Ironically, following their exploits against opposition from up and down the country, it was near neighbours Warrington Town who would provide the opposition at Wembley for what must, to the uninitiated, have looked more like a Rugby League Challenge Cup Final. Glyn Jones
Brief History Of Town The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and,
although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus
of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An all-time club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April
Charity Partner 2017-18
1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample
Charity Partner 2017-18
compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. Current club captain Andy
Gillespie won the NW Counties’ golden boot with 34 goals in the 2015/16 season and netted another 24 times last season. This season sees Town in their third season in the Hallmark Securities League First Division, aiming to put behind themselves two seasons of inconsistent performances which have seen them finish some way short of the promotion places, despite some excellent results. New manager Lee Jenkinson, who served his time under the experienced Alan Gillespie, now has a settled first team squad and with the club having endured seven years of a nomadic existence, ground-sharing at Ashton Town, Ashton Athletic and Prescot Cables, the excellent 3G facilities at Ruskin Drive are now up and running and backed up by a strong development system, featuring Under-18s, Under-21s and Reserves managed by a top -class coaching team, St. Helens Town are looking forward once again to a great future. Glyn Jones
In Town Today Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers. The Club finished 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season of 1907/08. In the early years, the Club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy, the Shipley Cup, in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946.
The Club had their most successful period during the 1970s and 80s, winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/95 saw the Club reach the FA Vase quarter-finals before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the Club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first Club to win the championship of the Second and First Divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year as that First Division triumph, the Club reached the FA Vase semi-finals, losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town, and two years later, the Club gained
promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the Club finished bottom of the Evo-Stik Division One North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play-off final against Trafford. Season 2013/14 saw the Club finish 11th, but the decision was taken to resign from the EvoStik League due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new Club was formed on 28th May 2014 and entered the NWCFL Division One for their debut campaign in 2014/15. In October, the Club lost manager Tony Sullivan to Witton Albion, and appointed Paul McNally in the same month. He ably guided the team to promotion, which was achieved on Saturday 4th April with a 5-0 win at Oldham Boro. In the end, Lairds finished 21 points clear of 3rd placed AFC Darwen. 2015/16 saw the Club finish 15th in its first season in the NWCFL Premier Division. Early on, Lairds drew or even lost games that they largely dominated, but they soon found their feet in the Premier Division. Undoubtedly their best result was an emphatic 4-0 victory against eventual champions Colne in October. In February, Tony Sullivan replaced Paul McNally as manager, and Lairds eventually secured a solid mid-table finish. At the end of the season, Sullivan departed and was replaced by former Prescot Cables and AFC Darwen manager Neil Prince. The new manager made an excellent start, two fine performances seeing off the challenge of AFC Darwen in the FA Cup. Despite an opening day 4-3 defeat at New Mills, a match in which the visitors led 2-0 and 3-2, Prince’s new-look side appeared to be gelling together with a

for such a youthful side to develop. Lairds’ displays improved significantly after the turn of the year, and everything finally came together on Saturday 18th March 2017 as they beat AFC Darwen 4-1 to record their first league win of the season. This was followed up three days later with a 2-1 victory against in-form Hanley Town.
three game unbeaten run at the end of August. However, September saw a series of tough fixtures against some of the top sides in the division, and Prince resigned on good terms with the Club after a 3-1 reverse against Squires Gate.
Prince was replaced by former Lairds striker Mick McGraa, who had taken over the Reserve Team in the summer. McGraa worked tirelessly to assemble a very promising young side.
Ultimately, results elsewhere consigned Lairds to relegation by the end of March, but with a young, talented set of players and improvements off the pitch, the Club is now in a much stronger position ahead of the Division One campaign to follow in 2017/18.
Although Lairds struggled in terms of results, several performances perhaps deserved better and there was an acceptance that it was going to take time Season

Carrying the Baton The international break from Premier League football dealt us one surprise and one no surprise at all: England looked quite good and England fans looked very bad, respectively. I couldn't face a full dose of 'The Lions' [sic] against the Netherlands, but the 20 or so minutes I braved seemed pleasantly positive. The ball spent an impressive portion of time on the ground, the goalscorer took his chance efficiently and a mascot stuck her neck out with a robust pre-match prediction of a twoall draw, on camera. The footage of the travelling support spraying innocent bypassers with beer, regaling ladies with unsavoury mass appeals and throwing a bicycle into a canal was altogether less impressive. The first two are bad enough, but why travel all the way to Amsterdam to throw a bike into a canal when you can do it in Blackbrook? I despair.* Such antics have always deterred me from travelling abroad to watch England. I couldn't look my foreign friends in the face if I was associated with such crass, and sometimes criminal behaviour on their streets. It is a matter of national pride, in a good way. I tuned in for more of the home game against Italy. Again, England looked good in patches. I have always known that we Lingards are selfless quick-thinking creators as well as scorers, it just took me half a lifetime of football to see any convincing evidence of it. The lads fulfilled their task – generating false hope before a World Cup – magnificently, and we can all look forward to our elimination at
Charity Partner 2017-18
the group stage and the subsequent unsavoury carnage with heightened foreboding. (I’d book the 29th off work now, if I were you.) Of course, there is a lot to do between now and the World Cup. For a start, Town have to continue their run of good form and climb a few more inches from the bottom of the table. Victory over Cammell Laird today would be the third triumph on the bounce / second triumph in the last three games (delete as applicable – written before the trip to Holker on Wednesday.) It would be quite an achievement, given recent challenges. Whatever the result, Town are unlikely to receive a fraction of the attention that the Good Friday Saints v Wigan clash will attract. We are seeing signs, however, that the club’s profile is increasing, thanks to the move back into the Borough last summer and the ongoing hard work by the team of volunteers: attendance is amongst the highest in the division and growing; all-comers enjoy the matchday experience at Ruskin; and more sponsors are signing up. (I was particularly pleased to see that the partnership with St. Helens Mind is growing.) Town is involved in the ‘Beating the Bounds’ round-borough walk on 13 May on an equal basis with Saints: both will be providing a club ball to act as relay ‘batons’. Representatives of some of the many community groups in the borough will carry the batons around the 42-mile circuit, starting and finishing at Haydock Park. Fans of both forms of football, any other sport or no sport at all are welcome to join us. Blisters don’t discriminate. COYB Ste Lingard (@stelingard) *Note: as a Friend of the Canal & River Trust and keen admirer of swans (and other birds), I categorically do not condone the throwing of bikes into canals - or ponds.

League News A great show by 1874 OK, so 1874 Northwich won't be playing in the FA Vase final at Wembley on May 20th - but haven't they done well?
Over the course of their Vase campaign, they have turned in some fine performances and attracted consistently good comments from rival managers about their ability and style of play. As have their supporters, who have turned out in numbers to back the side superbly home and away, most notably on Saturday when a crowd of 1693 rolled up to Wincham Park. It's been a run that has done much to raise the profile of the club, and we all owe them a huge vote of thanks for the way in which they have represented our league. Paul Stockton would have been so proud of them all. A good week for the Blues There's something in the air down in MidCheshire at the moment, because 1874's landlords Winsford United aren't doing too badly either. Alongside news of a boardroom restructure, the Blues are on a good run of form with
Saturday's win at Padiham being their fourth in five games. That victory followed on from their fine midweek result when they won 1-0 at Altrincham to clinch a place in the semifinal of the Cheshire Senior Cup.
The Blues face a bust run in to the end of the season, but they head into April in fine fettle. Heys on a roll Another side shaping up well for a busy end of season run are Prestwich Heys, whose three games on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday produced three wins, with eleven goals scored and none conceded. With Heys being badly affected by postponements over the past few months, it's easy to forget that they are actually unbeaten in the league since midNovember, and have now chalked up four successive wins in eight days. They have plenty of games in hand on Silsden and REMYCA at the top of the table, so don't rule out a late charge from Heys. It ain't over until it's over.... Atherton LR's game against AFC Blackpool on Saturday will surely not be surpassed this season when it comes to late drama. With ten minutes to go, LR's Theodore Kidd scored his second goal of the afternoon to put LR two up, and at that point I'm sure many of us would have thought "game over". Oh no it wasn't.... Showing commendable fighting spirit, Conah Bishop (83 minutes), Ben Duffield
Charity Partner 2017-18
(86 minutes) and Kit Gregory (88 minutes) scored for AFC Blackpool, and as the game moved into stoppage time, it looked like the visitors had staged a remarkable turnaround. But stoppage time goals from Bradley Aspinall and Nathan Randall pinched a 4 -3 victory from the jaws of defeat for LR, and rounded off what was surely the most amazing ten minutes of play that will be witnessed anywhere in the league this season. Carl's back on track The familiar name of Carl Grimshaw returned to the goalscoring charts this week, after what had been - for him at least - something of a lean spell. The Charnock Richard talisman went into Monday night's game at Winsford in the unusual position of not having scored in three of his last five games, which by his standards was a bit of a drought.
But a hat trick at Winsford on Monday, followed by another in the defeat at Squires Gate, suggests that it's back to business for the league's most prolific striker who has now scored in 22 of the last 26 games he has played in for Charnock, and two of the four that he didn't score in were goalless draws. Saturday's goal moved him on to 41 for the season and you wouldn't bet against seeing a few more from Carl in the coming weeks. League Landmarks Wednesday 21st March 2018 City of Liverpool's second goal in the 4-3 win over Padham, scored by David Forbes, was City’s 100th home League goal. Thursday 22nd March 2018 Stockport Town's 4-2 win at Chadderton was their 50th League win. Prestwich Heys achieved a double landmark in their 4-0 win over St Helens Town. It was their 50th home League win, and the third goal of the night scored by John Main was their 200th home League
Charity Partner 2017-18
goal. Saturday 24th March 2018 Another landmark for Prestwich Heys their 3-0 win at home to Eccleshall took them past 250 League points (they are now on 251).
West Didsbury & Chorlton's Jack Sergeant played the full 90 minutes for Gibraltar in their 1-0 win over Latvia in a friendly international this afternoon. Playing at full back, Jack was part of a Gibraltar team that achieved only their second win at full international level since becoming full members of UEFA in 2013, thanks to a goal from Notts County's Liam Walker two minutes from time. It was a game of few clear cut chances, played on a blustery afternoon at Gibraltar's Victoria Stadium, which was hosting the home side in an international game for the first time in two years. On that occasion Latvia were also the visitors, running out 5-0 winners. Jack had a steady game at the back for his national side, although he needed treatment for an injury after a robust challenge early in second half, leading to a stretcher being produced, but after a couple of minutes he returned to the action. He was also yellow carded for a tackle inside the Latvian half with 20 minutes to go. The winning goal arrived two minutes from time, direct from a free kick 30 yards out, and Liam Walker's shot took a deflection off the Latvian defensive wall before ending up in the back of the bet to seal victory for the home side. Gibraltar's only other international victory was a 1-0 win over Malta in 2014, and this afternoon's result is only the fourth time they have kept a clean sheet in a full international.
