Talk of the Town Good evening, and welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League, First Division contest against Chadderton. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It’s been just a week since we were last here hosting a Stockport Town outfit who were unbeaten in their previous nine outings. The game was very stop, start in the opening period with neither goalkeeper being troubled too much in the opening 45 minutes of the contest.

The second half was to prove to be a different matter as it began with an action packed first ten minutes which saw the host take the lead through Ste Rigby. Alex Gillespie sent a free kick from just inside the visitors half towards the left edge of the box and with his back to goal he trapped the ball on his chest turned and lofted a shot right footed into the top right hand corner of the net for what must be up there in the goal of the season contenders! Three minutes later and it was 2-0 to the hosts another free kick just inside the visitors half was sent towards the box and a defender baulked what seemed a routine punch for the visiting stopper the ball broke to the edge of the box and another defender fluffed his clearance with Rigby again on hand this time to power a left footed finish past the stranded shop stopper. This proved to be enough for St Helens to get back to winning ways as a solid defensive display along with a decent if not spectacular all around performance on a night when Adam Fairchild was rarely employed saw Town earn a clean sheet. Attentions turn to this evenings contest against another of the leagues in forma sides Chadderton. Another blank Saturday for the first team saw a trip to Chadderton for a scouting mission which saw them demolish AFC Blackpool 7-0. Town will be looking to avenge an early season reverse here at Volair Park in September at the hands Chadderton in the FA Vase with the hosts going down 5-3 after having been 2-0 up early in proceedings. Chaddy have won their last three contests scoring 12 and conceding just once in these outings including advancing to the Macron Cup Semi Finals after defeating Premier Division Nelson 3-1 at Little Wembley. Town will need to be performing at the top of their game if they are to complete March’s fixtures well and extend the unbeaten run as we look to amass as many points as we can and finish in the highest possible position in the league table. In Town Today Chadderton Football Club was formed in 1947, under the name Millbrow Football Club, later changing to North Chadderton Amateurs, before adopting its present name in 1957. The Club started life in the Oldham Amateur League, winning the Challenge Cup in 1954/55. The following season the Club joined the Manchester Amateur League and won the League Championship in their first season. After winning the League Championship again in 1962/63, Chadderton then joined the Manchester League winning the Second Division title in their first season and gaining promotion to the First Division. The Club won the League`s Murray Shield in their first season in Division One, and then the League title in 1966/67. During the 1970`s the Clubs only honours came in the form of the Manchester Challenge Trophy which they won in 1971/72, but failed to retain it in the following season, finishing runners-up. Chadderton made the step into a higher grade of football in 1980 when they joined the Lancashire Combination. The Club made a good start in this league, finishing runners-up in 1981/82.

In 1982, Chadderton became one of the founder members of the North West Counties Football League, following the merger of the Lancashire Combination and the Cheshire County League. The Club gained promotion to Division One in 1989/90 after finishing third in the league, but were relegated the following season. Promotion came once again in 1992/93 but, after failing to meet ground grading requirements, were relegated in 1998/99. Chadderton`s proudest moments have come in seeing the progression of its former players, such as former England captain David Platt, Former Leeds United and Crystal Palace player, John Pemberton and Northern Ireland International, Steve Jones. Former player Mike Ford forged a successful career in both codes of Rugby and Mark Owen of Take That also once pulled on the red shirt of Chadderton FC! Paul Buckley, with his assistant Derek Ogden, joined Chadderton FC as manager in December 2005. Since then the Clubs fortunes have taken a turn for the better on the field. Chadderton finished in 5th position in 2006/2007 - the highest position for over a decade and in 2007/2008 Chadderton again acheived 5th place and reached the semi finals of both the League and Division Cup. In the 2008-2009 season Chadderton finished in mid-table. A quarter-final appearance against League newcomers and favourites AFC Liverpool ended in a tight 3-2 defeat. That came after beating League

Chadderton Winners Bootle 2-1 in the previous round. Off the field in 2007, the Club was the subject of a take-over by local businessmen Craig Halliwell and Tony Bhatti, the joint owners of The HB Property Group Limited (previously The Halliwell Bhatti Group) which is the parent company of the local property development company Hillstone Developments Limited. The members of Chadderton voted overwhelmingly in October 2006 for the take-over to go ahead and after 10 long months the legalities were finally completed in August 2007. In August 2009 Chadderton`s association with The HB Property Group Limited was terminated and Chadderton Football Club reverted to a members club run by the people for the people. At the end of Season 2012/13 manager Paul Buckley was forced to stand down through ill health, with Derek Ogden going coaching in America the vacant managers position was offered to Steve Patterson, Steve was Paul’s assistant and also played for Chadderton in the nineties, Steve brought in another ex player Mark Cook as is assistant and Matty McNeil, Steve Mark and Matty hope to better last Season’s position in the League. Season 2014-15 saw Chadderton reach the last 32 in the FA Vase only to be knocked out by AFC Mansfield, they also reached the NWCFL First Division play offs only to be beaten at the Semi–Final stage by AFC Darwen the eventual winners. Last season saw Chadderton have a hit and miss season as they failed to build on their good form the previous term as they exited both the FA Cup and FA Vase at the first hurdles and finished the season in 14th position in the league. A new management team of Mark Howard and Ian Hulme are in place and Chadderton will be looking to kick on and improve on last seasons inconsistent performances.

Tonight’s visitors are on a decent run of form and will provide a tough test - I went on a ‘spying mission’ last Saturday as they entertained AFC Blackpool and ‘Chaddy’ looked impressive winning 7-0 while the sea-siders were a shadow the side we played a few weeks ago! Last Thursday’s encounter was another pulsating affair (well the second half was) and two great goals from Ste Rigby provided the highlight of the night - both goals were captured on video and proved to be extremely popular on social media. Don’t forget updates are available on the club’s twitter and Facebook accounts as well as the club website. Once again we have no Saturday fixture this week but our next game sees us host Atherton LR on Saturday 1st April (our 4th successive home game) and two week’s tonight we are at home to promotion favourites Whitchurch Alport. We’re keeping an eye on progress at Ruskin Drive Sports Ground and is looks like the dressing room building structure is about to make an appearance after extensive ground works have been completed. Our U21s have made it to the final of the Cheshire FA U21s League Challenge Cup which will tale place on Thursday 4th May at Chester FC. Ruskin Drive News More disappointment as the wait continues for Town's return to St Helens. Club officials met with the Council last Friday (3rd February) and it has now been confirmed that the work required to meet the FA Ground Grading will not be completed until mid-May 2017. While the ground is currently being used by the club’s U18s, U21s and Sunday teams the prolonged delays to the completion of the new dressing room facilities and a problem with the height of the pitch perimeter fence have left the club frustrated that the first team will have an extended wait to make a return home. The delay will mean a number of issues for Town including the need to secure alternative playing facilities for next season to ensure they do not fall foul of the FA and NWCFL ground requirements. As the Ruskin Drive Sports ground will not be in a position to be inspected by the 31st March deadline the club needs to have a ground sharing agreement in place at a suitable alternative ground to maintain their membership of the league and guarantee entry to FA competitions. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘The news is very disappointing and a real blow to our plans. We’ve relied on the good will and support of a number of clubs over the past six years and are indebted to those clubs in ensuring the survival of the club – their assistance should not be underestimated.’

He added, ‘If we accept that the new ground will be ready in May the reality is that we will never need to utilise any ground sharing agreement but it still has to be in place or we could be in serious trouble.’ The club will also lose out on a lucrative fixture as part of the NWCFL Easter weekend Ground Hop. Town were due to host promotion chasing City of Liverpool at Ruskin Drive as the second of three Ground Hop fixtures in the area on Easter Sunday which would have seen up to 300 ‘hoppers’ part of a likely four-figure crowd. Mr McKiernan added, ‘We had expected to be on the new ground some time earlier this season but delays have shifted from weeks to months. The loss of the Ground Hop fixture is both hugely disappointing and financially disastrous, losing the club thousands of pounds. ‘Given our opposition the City of Liverpool FC, who are very well supported, hundreds of ground hoppers and a lot of local interest this was guaranteed to be bumper crowd and an ideal way to showcase the club and the new Ruskin Drive Sports Ground facility. ‘Unfortunately, we had no other option but to inform the league that we would not be able to participate in the Ground Hop programme.’

Match Report Quickfire Rigby double puts paid to Stockport Town

Two goals in three minutes early in the second half by Ste Rigby gave St. Helens Town a deserved 2-0 win over Stockport Town. by Glyn Jones Two goals in three minutes early in the second half by Ste Rigby gave St. Helens Town a deserved 2-0 win over Stockport Town in a feisty encounter at Volair Park on Thursday evening. To quote a muchused football phrase, it was a “game of two halves”, the first 45 minutes being as dull as dishwater, producing only one chance of note, Joel Douglas’s goal-bound header hitting two defenders at point-blank range after 20 minutes. The second half was totally different, mainly due to Stockport’s sense of injustice surrounding the award of a free-kick which led indirectly to Rigby’s opening goal. The players had barely emerged for the second half when a challenge on the half-way line saw a Stockport player go in hard for the ball with Alex Gillespie. The force of the challenge on the ball knocked Gillespie off his feet and the referee, some distance away, awarded the home side a freekick. The ball was moved quickly upfield and found Rigby (pictured below) unmarked. His superb chest down and shot with his right foot left the visiting ‘keeper Dan Whiting looking over his shoulder as the ball dropped into the net and Town were 1-0 up inside 52 minutes. The reaction on the Stockport bench was one of disbelief. Recently appointed manager Dave Wild, still smarting from the award of the free-kick, reacted angrily, but worse was to come. His side, unbeaten since January and with an outside chance of the promotion playoff places, suddenly found themselves two goals down, as Rigby again found the net, as he lobbed Whiting from just outside the box out three minutes later. Two goals up, St. Helens have a fine record of their own this year and though Stockport shut up shop at the back after the second goal went in, Town were in no mood to surrender their own clean sheet and the remaining 35 minutes turned into a pulsating 35 minutes of midfield battle, with neither side giving an inch. There was an unfortunate undercurrent of anger, at times, which resulted in a brief incident which involved a number of players from both sides running in, but order was quickly restored. However, Stockport player Aaron Dwyer did receive his marching orders near the end for a second yellow card after a reckless challenge. Some ugly scenes followed the final whistle as tempers flared among the Stockport players and coaching staff and the teams had to leave the field separately, with the officials sandwiched in the middle, so keenly had this contest been fought. In fact, St. Helens now find themselves three points behind Stockport with a game in hand and the two teams are yet to meet at Lambeth Grove on 22nd April. It promises to be quite a game! FA Vase St Helens Town: FA Vase Winners - 1987

Rounds 5 and 6 Following their East Anglian sojourn in Round 4, normality was restored with another home draw, this time hosting Rainworth Miners’ Welfare, from the Nottinghamshire Football Alliance, beaten finalists five years earlier. Town’s team was: Andy Johnston; Paul Benson, Paul Wilson, Barry Lowe, John Bendon; Marty Cummins, Tommy O’Neil, Jimmy Collins, Brian Rigby, Jay McComb and Phil Layhe. Subs: John Deakin and Bryan Griffiths with Dave Collins named as reserve. Proceedings began with a minute’s silence to mark the passing of Town stalwart, George Fryer, who had been the prime mover in the re-birth of the club in 1946. Town began in great style and, following a foul on Brian Rigby in the penalty area after only 4 minutes, Jimmy Collins scored from the spot. Phil Layhe scored the second on the half hour and it was 2-0 to St. Helens at half-time. Further goals in the last 15 minutes from Layhe and Tommy O’Neil put the result beyond doubt, before the Miners scored a consolation goal to make the final score 4-1. Scorers: Collins (J), Layhe 2 and O’Neil.

Lady Luck smiled on Town once again in the quarter-finals when Falmouth Town made the long journey to Hoghton Road on 28th February. However, it was far from an easy ride for Town and the unchanged team, with Mark Gledhill deputising for Dave Collins as the reserve, could only draw 1-1 with their Cornish visitors, the tie going to extra time once again. Chris Long headed in for Falmouth after 25 minutes and, after that it was all St. Helens. Coming out for the second half 0-1 down, it took Town less than a minute to level the tie, Phil Layhe scoring again, but despite another 44 minutes of seemingly constant pressure on the visitors’ goal, the home team missed a whole host of chances and extra time was completed in much the same vein. The Town team was: Johnston, Benson, Wilson, Lowe, Bendon; Cummins, O’Neil, Collins (J), Rigby, McComb and Layhe. Subs: Deakin and Griffiths. Reserve: Gledhill. Scorer: Layhe. An unwanted 700-mile round trip to Cornwall was undertaken the following week for the Bickland Park replay. The team was, once again, unchanged, with Deakin and Gledhill named on the bench, Bryan Griffiths and Gary Laird travelling as reserves. An overnight stay in Torquay either side of the game broke the journey (the longest made by St. Helens Town in their entire history) and the team were relieved that the Falmouth pitch had passed a referee’s inspection only just before their arrival. Town began in encouraging style and had three chances before Phil Layhe netted from Paul Wilson’s wayward free kick after 30 minutes. The score remained 1-0 until half-time and the second half passed without further scoring, thanks to inspired performances from both goalkeepers. It was a sweet, but long, trek home for Town, with the mouth-watering prospect of a two-legged semi-final with Emley. The team was: Johnston; Benson, Wilson, Lowe Bendon; Cummins, O’Neil, Collins (J), Rigby, McComb and Layhe. Subs: Deakin and Gledhill. Reserves: Griffiths and Laird. Scorer: Layhe.

1986-7 Revisited The Semi-Finals Town always have to do things the hard way! Following a drawn game against Falmouth Town and a 700-mile round trip to win after a replay in the previous round, it was a similar tale in the Semi-Final against Emley. The first-leg of the Semi-Final was at Hoghton Road on 21st March. The first day of Spring produced a wonderful, sunny Sutton afternoon and the majority of the crowd of 2028 assembled in anticipation of a home win. Unfortunately, the Town players appeared to let the occasion get the better of them and it was Emley who seized the initiative: The Yorkshire-side’s left back, Willie Carpenter made a break and sent over a cross which eluded Barry Lowe and the unfortunate Paul Wilson could only help the ball into his own net. 0-1 was the score at 90 minutes, the only occasion in 12 games in the Vase that Town failed to score. The team was: Andy Johnston Paul Benson, Paul Wilson, Barry Lowe, John Bendon; Marty Cummins, Tommy O’Neil, Jimmy Collins, Brian Rigby, Jay McComb and Phil Layhe. Subs: Mark Gledhill and John Deakin. Res: Bryan Griffiths. The second leg took place seven days later at the Welfare Ground in Emley, a village between Huddersfield and Wakefield. Following a week of deteriorating weather, the pitch was in a dreadful state, but the game passed an early morning inspection, thanks mainly to a strong, drying wind. John Bendon missed the game through injury and a re-shuffling by manager Alan Wellens moved Paul Benson from left to centre back, with Tommy O’Neil reverting to the position he had held many years before in his Manchester United days. Mark Gledhill came into midfield. There was a crowd of well over 3000 packed into the tight ground but despite the home side having the majority of the support, it was Town who took the initiative after the initial Emley onslaught. However, there was no score at the break. The second half began with Town still looking to level the tie and they did not have to wait long for Gledhill to score from 12 yards. Town exerted further pressure and Phil Layhe had a shot cleared in the list minute, but from the resulting corner, Paul Benson headed past the home keeper, only for the ball to be handled on the line by full-back Carpenter. Into injury time, Jimmy Collins took the resulting penalty, but the home ‘keeper easily gathered the mis-hit shot and the referee blew the final whistle. Extra-time again and all to play for. 8 minutes into the first period, Brian Rigby headed home Jimmy Collins’ cross and put Town ahead in the tie. All hands to the pumps, as St. Helens weathered the storm until the final 3 minutes when the referee awarded a home penalty following a foul from Paul Wilson which he clearly thought was outside the area. Nevertheless the award stood and up ran Steve Codd, who dispatched the ball with great force for the top corner. The crowd gasped but Andy Johnston jumped like a salmon to deflect the ball past the post and deny the home side the spoils of war. It was a majestic conclusion to an epic battle. Team: Johnston, O’Neil, Wilson, Lowe, Benson; Cummins, Gledhill, J. Collins, Rigby, McComb and Layhe. Subs: Deakin and Tony Williams. Scorers: Gledhill and Rigby.

Town had done it, against all the odds! Ironically, following their exploits against opposition from up and down the country, it was near neighbours Warrington Town who would provide the opposition at Wembley for what must, to the uninitiated, have looked more like a Rugby League Challenge Cup Final. A Brief History The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged Tommy O’Neil over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record Wembley,1987 attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An alltime club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April

St Helens Town 1948 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent mid-season form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early -season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30 th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

League News The Hallmark Security League’s Management Committee met with representatives from The Football Association to discuss its proposals to restructure parts of the National League system, which will have an impact on both our Premier and First Divisions. On the back of the recent restructure announcement, which has already been given the green light by the FA Council, the League invited Laurence Jones, Head of League Services at the FA, and Ray Lewis, Chairman of the National League’s Committee to attend its Management Committee meeting held in Haydock. The FA presented its proposals for the restructure of the National League System, which will include the creation of new Step 3 and 4 divisions in the Central Region (Midlands). The restructure also proposes to reduce the number of teams at Step’s 4, 5 & 6 to 20 clubs per division and create a new Step 6 division in the North West. The League responded to the proposals presenting its own proposals for the restructure, which it believes would better serve the whole National League System, including tackling some of the geographical issues the current structure presents; the lack of promotion and relegation from some leagues, and the need for Step 7 (feeder to the Hallmark Security League First Division) to address some of the structural issues faced at that level. While the League stated that its clubs didn’t support the reduction to 20 teams within each division, due to the potential loss of revenue, it did state the case for the creation of a second promotion position from Step 5 to Step 4. In our opinion, an additional promotion place is a key requirement of the restructure, either through direct promotion, internal playoffs, or inter league playoffs, in order to address the current bottleneck caused by having only one automatic promotional spot from our Premier Division. The League also shared its concerns about the financial implications of the reduction in numbers at Steps 5 & 6. Paul Lawler, Chairman of The Hallmark Security League, said: “The League welcomed the opportunity to listen to the FA’s proposals and share our own proposals. We fully support the need for the restructure of the National League System, but we do believe that these proposals don’t go far enough to benefit the game as a whole. While we disagree with the reduction of clubs in each division, we want to take the opportunity to push for an additional promotional place from our Premier Division, as having only one team promoted creates a bottleneck which penalises our ambitious clubs who want to progress up the system. As we have seen from the introduction of play-offs in our First Division, this creates a competitive League, and we believe additional promotion places from Step 5 would work as well. “The proposals to create an additional division at Step 6 in the North West is a positive move, and will reduce the travelling distance for our clubs and provide further opportunities for clubs to progress from Step 7. The intention is to create two divisions at Step 6 with a minimum of 16 clubs, with a view to increasing to 20 clubs per division in due course. We thank the FA for coming to our meeting and listening to our proposals and we look forward to further dialogue as the restructure proposals develop.”

Match Report v Another excellent game at Volair Park as Town and Alsager battle out a thrilling 2-2 draw. by Glyn Jones Match report sponsored by Top Car Detailing It was always going to be an uphill battle, facing a strong Alsager team, pushing hard for promotion, without the benefit of a game for nearly three weeks and having to cover for the suspended trio of captain Andy Gillespie, Dale Korie-Butler and Eddie Pegler, but once again, Town turned in a spirited performance and just when it appeared they might slip to an unfortunate defeat, they snatched a draw in a rousing finish. The game was a physical battle from the outset, with bone-crunching tackles the order of the day. That no player was injured was surprising in itself, but there were few complaints as both sets of players got stuck into the battle, which warmed up both participants and crowd on a chill night at Volair Park. Without leading scorer Andy Gillespie, Town fielded debutant Joel Douglas, who acquitted himself very well and, once the rustiness of 19 days without a game had begun to wear off and wings Ste Rigby and Luke Edwards began to push forward, assisted by Paul Carney in midfield, the home side began to make up for lost ground and gain the ascendency. Their patience was rewarded after 35 minutes with a move begun by Edwards, which involved quick passes between several players, eventually finding full-back Dom Whelan one-on-one with Alsager keeper Chris Fletcher on the edge of his six-yard box and as Whelan shaped to shoot, Fletcher

Alsager Town upended him and a penalty was awarded, which Rigby confidently despatched to put Town 1-0 up heading into half-time. The goal transformed the complexion of the game as, suddenly, Alsager were on the back foot. They emerged from the dressing room after the break much more determined and took a firm grip of the proceedings, launching wave after wave of attack and Adam Fairchild pulled off two magnificent saves and saw another shot sail just past his right-hand post. His luck finally ran out, however, in the 72nd minute when, from a corner, veteran striker Micky Lennon blasted a shot which Mark Grice deflected in off the same post and past Fairchild to level the scores at 1-1. Alsager were in almost total control at this stage and looked set to take the lead shortly afterwards until Andy Presho cleared impressively off his line. Town manager freshened up his troops and sent on George Ukaegbu for Douglas, the speedy Anthony Dunleavy soon followed, together with Michael Chojnicki and the injection of fresh legs and pace breathed new life into the game. Almost immediately, Dunleavy sprinted through and combined with Ukaegbu to set up an opening for Rigby and he looked certain to score, but the ball curled just over the bar. Then it was Carneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turn and he went through the defence on a mesmerising run, only for his shot to be blocked and Edwards hit the rebound over the bar.

The match entered its last minute and, as in the previous home game, a dramatic finale was to be played out. This time, against the run of play, Alsager broke from deep inside their own half and Dave McPherson finished off an 80-yard move by scoring what looked to be the winning goal. However, the visitors had not reckoned with the fighting spirit of this St. Helens team. Deep into the fourth minute of added time, a break down the right saw a ball played over the top of the defenders to Liam Dodd, who drew the advancing Fletcher and lobbed him from 20 yards, the ball nestling in the back of the net to secure another remarkable draw which, in the circumstances, felt almost like a victory. Town are looking to raise funds by opening a souvenir shop at forthcoming games. Match Report v St Helens Town let another lead slip as Chadderton progress in the FA Vase. A match in the FA Vase was a welcome break for St Helens Town, who had endured a 3 game winless run and two successive defeats against Atherton LR and City of Liverpool. They had endured good recent success at this stage, progressing in the past 2 years against Irlam and Winterton Rangers respectively. However, it would be a tough ask to keep up this record, as they faced a Chadderton side who sat just outside the playoffs in this all First Division tie, and had come off the back of a 5-1 victory against Ashton Town. The form book suggested a victory for the away side; but the first half was anything but… The departure of both George and Chris Lomax from the club in midweek meant that the burden was back on Andy Gillespie to spearhead the St Helens Town attack on his own, as he looked to recapture last season’s form that had saw him do this with aplomb. Gillespie seemed to have no problem in doing this as he collected Sam Sheens pass to fire past the goalkeeper and give Town the lead after only 12 seconds!

The blues looked confident, and played with the freedom and fluidity that we have saw many times already this season, which if stretched over the full 90 minutes should see Town much further up the table. Gillespie added his second on 12 minutes as he broke through the Chadderton back line, and had time to look for a pass, none was forthcoming so drilled the ball into the far corner, doubling Town’s lead. Town had further chances to extend their lead through 2 efforts in quick succession from Ste Rigby, but he could not capitalise. Neither could any Town forward on a superb Danny Greene cross, as killing the game off was necessary. Ryan Taylor came into the team as goalkeeper, making his first appearance in just over 3 years, incidentally in this stage of the Vase against Pontefract Collieries. He was rarely tested in the opening half, but saw a deep free kick late as it bounced off his body into the path of Devante Jacobs to tap home and give the visitors a life line heading into the second half.

Chadderton HT: St Helens Town (Andy Gillespie, 1, 12) 2–1 Chadderton (Jacobs, 41) Town started the second half somewhat flat compared to that of the first, as Chadderton started to have the upper hand in the game. They came close through James Curley as an effort well described by his surname went wide of the far post. Alan Gillespie and Nick Matthews realised the drop in tempo and brought Phil Williams off the bench to inject some pace into the game. Town started to create meaningful chances, first through an Andy Presho driving run that saw his shot wide, and then a Sam Sheen volley that evaded the goal. However, the same frailties lie for Town as they let another lead slip, just after the hour mark. A chest down from Scott Foster was struck sweetly as his effort from 25 yards went in off the post to level the tie. Town were then disallowed a goal for a push on the goalkeeper before the chance of the match went begging. A poor clearance from Chadderton goalkeeper Dane Smith found Danny Greene with acres of space and time to slot into an open net, instead the right midfielder put his shot wide of the post, to the disbelief of Volair Park.

Chadderton completed their comeback through a mix up from Ryan Taylor and debutant Adam Donohue allowed Curley to walk the ball into the net. They then added a fourth after a sweeping counter attack found Foster to grab his brace. Town pulled one back through a deflected Phil Williams shot that went in off the post but Chadderton restored their two goal advantage moments later as a pullback found Jack Tuohy to complete the scoring. Manager’s Notes Hi Everybody welcome again to Volair Park for tonight’s fixture against Chadderton. Our visitors are currently on a good run on form having won seven of their last nine games including a 7-0 beating of AFC Blackpool which I managed to get to see last Saturday so I know 1st hand how well they are playing . This will be our first league meeting of the season but our visitors did knock us out of the FA Vase back in September triumphing 3-5 after we led 2-1 at half time. Our last home game against Stockport Town was yet another hard fought Thursday night affair at Cables. That’s three crackers in a row! The first half saw the visitors dominating possession but not managing to convert any of the half chances that fell their way. We looked very ordinary despite fielding an unchanged side from the Alsager game not managing to string more than three passes together. The second half was a total contrast with Ste Rigby scoring early in the half with two excellent strikes following two Alex Gillespie free kicks. The game then took on a much different atmosphere as Stockport bitterly contested the free kick award. The main thing from my point of view was the great restraint and discipline our players showed in what became a very hostile game. It was a shame that the events of the evening detracted from a fine team performance as we secured three valuable points from a team top of the form table. To be fair Stockport have built an excellent side in a short space of time and will be a match for most sides in this division. Man of the Match Ste Rigby is revelling in the freedom his new role offers and Andy Presho turned in a great performance at left back probably his best game of the season.

Overall again I was very pleased with s clean sheet and our overall performance on what was once again a very tricky Cables surface. I will be looking to strengthen the squad particularly after the departure of GK Gage Walsh just before the transfer closes. We must look to further strengthen our squad for a very testing run in during April with games against a number of the leading teams. Enjoy the game and hopefully the three points.

League News County Cup final for 1874 1874 Northwich have the chance to lift the Mid-Cheshire Cup for the second year in a row, after their fine 4-1 win over Witton Albion in Thursday's semi final at the St Luke's Barton Stadium. It's the second year in a row that the Greens have beaten their Evo-Stik League rivals in the competition, after last year's win in the final, and their victory sets up an even tastier clash in this year's final when they face Northwich Victoria. The Greens' promotion hopes have been dented in recent weeks, but the prospect of lifting a trophy at the expense of their local rivals is a tasty prospect for supporters and players alike. A good week for Sandbach Sandbach United rounded off a good few days work by clinching a place in the final of the Reusch First Division Trophy against City Of Liverpool with a 5-4 aggregate win over Holker Old Boys. Earlier in the week, a new stand was installed at the Sandbach Community Football Centre, and it got its first airing on Saturday as United made history by earning a place in the final in their first season in our league. A new stand, a cup final place, crowds increasing week by week and still in with a chance of promotion - it's all looking pretty good at the moment for United

Purple defensive power Speaking of Sandbach United's opponents in the Reusch First Division Trophy final, City of Liverpool's 3-0 win over Widnes in Tuesday's second leg was followed by a 4-0 win at FC Oswestry Town on Saturday, two results that continued the Purples' remarkable defensive record of late Simon Burton's men have now kept six successive clean sheets, and have conceded just one goal in the last nine games impressive form by any standards. When they are in that sort of form, it will take some impressive attacking play to penetrate what is currently a water tight Purple defence. Seven up for Chaddy again At the end of January, Chadderton recorded a 7-1 win at Eccleshall, a result notable as it was the first time since 1st December 2007 that they had scored seven goals in a game. But within two months, they have repeated the feat again, this time hitting seven without reply at home to AFC Blackpool on Saturday. It's now 12 goals and three wins in three games for Chaddy, and it's particularly interesting that they are hitting form just as they move into a sequence of games that begins at the weekend at Sandbach United, followed by games in succession against Alsager Town, City of Liverpool FC in the Macron Cup, Charnock Richard and Prestwich Heys. Chaddy may be mid-table in Division One, but they could have a big say in the destiny of both league and cup success for a number of clubs over the coming weeks.

A win at last for Lairds At around five o'clock on Saturday, there was jubilation down Rock Ferry way in Birkenhead as a long awaited first was celebrated - Cammell Laird1907 won their first league game of the season, beating AFC Darwen 4-1 at the North West Construction Stadium. Granted, it is probably only a matter of a week or so before Lairds' relegation from the Premier Division is confirmed, as the result did little to stave off the increasingly inevitable, but no one could begrudge them a moment of cheer in what has been an otherwise gloomy season. Their last league win was last season on the 10th April away at Silsden when they won 2-1, and their last home league win was 51 weeks ago when they beat Squires Gate 2-0 on 26th March 2016. The hope now is that they can build on Saturday's victory, and enjoy a few brighter days between now and the end of April.

League News Sandbach United have now installed a 50 seater stand at the Sandbach Community Football Centre to meet the required FA ground grading criteria. The stand has been installed behind the goal on the clubhouse side of the ground next to the turnstiles, and was in use for the first time on Saturday, for the Reusch First Division Cup semi-final against Holker Old Boys. United Secretary John Clayton said: "We had the concrete base for the stand put down a few weeks ago, and the stand itself was delivered last week. It only took an hour or so for the stand to be lifted into place and bolted down. We are obviously pleased that the work has now been completed and that we now meet the required ground grading standards to remain in the league". There were no shortage of willing volunteers to test out the new stand on Saturday, with many members of the club's junior sections immediately taking residence and christening it in noisy fashion throughout the game, with the accompaniment of a drum to add to the atmosphere. Work is underway at Daisy Hill to resurface the club car park and create new parking spaces in the entrance area outside the club house. The car park at New Sirs has been targeted for development for some time, and Secretary Bob Naylor says that the current project has been worked on for almost two years, before finally coming to fruition. “We first began looking at this a number of years ago, and identified the possible sources of funding”, said Bob. “From there it has taken over 18 months to get the funding approved and in place, in order that the work can begin. “The total cost of the work is approximately £40,000, and we are very grateful to Viridor Environment Credit and to the Football Foundation Stadium Improvement Fund for their financial support. “The preparation work has now been done to level the existing surface, and remove some grass banking at the turnstile end of the car park. Tarmac will be laid in the next couple of weeks, and then parking bays will be marked out, including four disabled spaces. “As well as the car park itself, the work will also cover the surface on the driveway up to the ground, and on the pathway around the back of the covered enclosure at the side of the ground. “With the removal of the grass areas that were at the top end of the car park, the car park already looks much bigger, and we believe that will create an extra 15 -20 spaces. The marking out of the parking bays will ensure that parking is more controlled and better organised than it was before. “We like to think that once the work is done, the whole area will look more attractive, and people will find parking easier when they visit the ground. “It will be certainly be good to know that when people park up, they won’t have to worry about then having to walk through puddles to get from their cars into the ground. “We are hoping that the work will be completed within the next two weeks, and that the car park will be in use for our last few games of the current season.
