Talk of the Town Good afternoon, and welcome to Volair Park for this our final Hallmark Security League, First Division contest of the season as we host league “new boys” Charnock Richard. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. We were last here just over a week ago taking on basement side Ashton Town and secured a 2-0 win in a scrappy game where the visitors battled for their Division One lives, an early Ste Rigby goal added to by Paul Carney in the second half was enough to secure the points and send Ashton mathematically down. We then travelled to Stockport Town and started off well with Luke Edwards intercepting a back pass and slotting home but were pegged back before the break and ultimately ended up going down 3-1. We then took the long trip to Barrow on Tuesday to take on Holker Old Boys a quiet first half saw no goals but Town took the lead through Danny Lomax just after the hour mark but the host quickly levelled and netted a winner five minutes from time to secure a comeback victory. This afternoons visitors are all but mathematically promoted as they are three points in front of third placed Litherland REMYCA and twenty goals better off in the goal difference department so barring a massive defeat this afternoon for Charnock and a massive win for Litherland at home to Holker, The Villagers will be playing Hallmark Securities League, Premier Division football next season along with Widnes who were crowned Champions on Tuesday evening after they defeated AFC Blackpool and Charnock played out a 1-1 draw at City of Liverpool. The play off picture is almost settled as well with the four clubs who will contest the post season know, Litherland currently sit in third place with COL sitting on their shoulder in fourth, one point behind and these two teams appear to have secured home advantage in the Semi Finals with Whitchurch and Sandbach completing the field in fifth and sixth respectively. At the other end of the table Eccleshall and Ashton Town cannot escape the relegation zone but their fates will be decided by the FA dependant on what happens higher up the pyramid as the end of the term normally brings with it the silly season! Joining up next season from the Premier Division will be three clubs we have crossed swords with on numerous occasions as New Mills, Nelson and Cammell Lairds drop down a level after finishing 20th, 21st & 22nd in the leagues top flight. At the other end of the Premier Division table congratulations are in order for Atherton Collieries who secured the title with a 1-0 home win over Abbey Hey on Monday evening.

It would be nice to sign off a difficult season with a victory against a club who will in all likelihood be elevating themselves to the Premier Division and whom we secured an away victory over way back in the mists of time in August. The delayed move to Ruskin and the uncertainty of this has precipitated into what has felt like playing 42 away league games and the effort put in by Alan, Lee all the coaching staff and the players against this background has been exceptional and it will be nice to have a true “home” for the first time since August 2010! Finally as always many thanks for all the volunteers who make the club what it is from making the tea, to producing the programme to coaching the various teams throughout the season, the effort always seems worth it when we see 11 players pull on the Town shirt on a matchday! In Town Today In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C. The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947-48 season, losing only two games, and scoring 107 goals. This success prompted them to try and run two teams, but they ran into difficulties and the club closed at the end of the 1948-49 season. In 1955, under the leadership of Ron Wilcox, the present club was reformed, and once again played in the Chorley Alliance League. In 1957 they moved to the Preston & District League, where they have spent most of their time, apart from a brief flirtation with the Bolton Combination. In the Preston & District League they were soon amongst the honours, beating English Electric in 1957-58 to take the Guildhall Cup. Success also came in this competition in seasons 1963-64, 1968-69, and more recently in 1992-93. A number of league championships have also come their way, including winning the Premier Division in 1988-89. The 1967-68 season saw the village team take the Lancashire Amateur Shield, beating Vickers Sports Club from Barrow after a replay. Further success came in the Shield in seasons 2001-2, 2006-07, 201011 and 2011-12. In 1993 the club moved to the West Lancashire League, and since then both the First and Second teams have gained promotion to the top division of their respective sections. They have also been successful in the West Lancashire League, winning the Premier Division Championship on seven occasions, in seasons 1997-98, 2003-04, 2008-09, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. They also won the Richardson Cup in 2001-02, 2003-04, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16. Numerous other honours have also come their way over the years including two recent Goldline Trophy victories at Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium ,the Wilf Carr Memorial Trophy in 2009, and the Northern Counties Senior Cup in 2012-13. The Reserve team have also been amongst the honours in the West Lancashire League. Following winning the Reserve Division championship in seasons 1996-97 and 199798, they completed a league and Houston Cup double in 2013-14, losing only one game in the entire season. The 2013-14 season was therefore one of the best ever seasons for the club in the West Lancashire League with both the 1st Team and Reserves completing league and cup doubles. The club has however kept its links with the Preston & District League (now renamed The Mid Lancashire League), they have an Academy team and Veterans team playing in that league. The Academy team caters for younger players making the step up into adult

The three senior teams are now referred to as the First team, Reserve team, and Academy team. A large number of junior teams also play in the Mid Lancs Colts Junior Football League and the Central Lancashire Junior Football League, with a youth team also playing in the Lancashire Sunday Football League. The club moved to Mossie Close in Charter Lane in 1968, after playing elsewhere in the village, and the adjoining club house was opened in 1988. A new ground has recently been developed on the opposite side of Charter Lane, known as Mossie Park, which now stages West Lancashire League games, with the new changing rooms having been opened in July 2011. The club progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016-17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season. Chairman’s Notes Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Volair Park for our final Hallmark Security League First Division game of the season. We welcome Charnock Richard for the first time; let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with today’s match officials and our own following are treated to an entertaining encounter. Many thanks to today’s match sponsors Stillia (Jack Bennett, Connor Moran, Johnny Waring and Matty Bennett) who are a local band whose popularity in the last couple of years has seen them signed by Republic Music Management and they have recently launch their debut single ‘Let Me In’ - we are delighted to have you with us this afternoon. We also welcome our match ball sponsors Beechley Stables RDA who have been supported by regular sponsor Anthony Hall - your continued support is greatly appreciated. I’d like to offer my congratulations to everyone to Charnock Richard on a fine debut season in the Hallmark Security League which today will see them presented with the runners-up trophy after the game. They will righty take their place in the league’s top flight next season.

As this is our final programme of the campaign I’d also like to thank our friends at Prescot Cables for their support and assistance in hosting us this season - in particular Ken and Lynda Derbyshire who have been delightful hosts on match day. I also congratulate Cables on their historic Liverpool Senior Cup victory this week which saw them defeat Southport 2-0 here at Volair Park in front of over 900 supporters. Without the players, managers, coaches, committee, volunteers and supporters there would be no club - my sincerest thanks to everyone who has contributed to helping St Helens Town function this season and I look forward to seeing you all at Ruskin Drive Sportsground over the summer. We look to have a bright future back in St Helens and we will be working hard to increase support and bring in new investment which will allow Alan, Lee and Nick to make progress on the field. Ruskin Drive News Work on Ruskin Drive Sports Ground is now progressing well with the ground works completed and this week has seen the start of the dressing room structure. In addition the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hospitality room has also been delivered and put in position ready for utilities to be connected. Glyn Jones’ THERE ARE NO LIMITS FOR AMBITIOUS CLUBS IN THE “COUNTIES” by Glyn Jones As the current season draws to its close, the Hallmark Security League can look back with great satisfaction on a very successful and exciting campaign for all its clubs involved in the chase for championship and promotion honours, in particular those in the First Division of the NW Counties League. Six new clubs were admitted at the start of the season, from Carlisle City in the North to FC Oswestry in the South, a brand new club in City of Liverpool FC and other new members in Prestwich Heys, Sandbach United and, today’s opponents, Charnock Richard. Four of the new clubs, plus Widnes, Litherland Remyca and the totally reinvigorated Whitchurch Alport have been pushing for the leadership for most of the season and this has resulted in the most exciting title chase for many, many years. Added to this, the battle at the top of the Premier Division has been hardly less intriguing, with Atherton Collieries battling it out with Bootle, 1874 Northwich and the two Runcorn clubs for the sole promotion place, with Colls only making sure of the title in the final week of the season. Widnes are now Champions of the First Division and Charnock Richard need only avoid defeat by a massive margin to secure automatic promotion, with the play-off places confirmed with home ties for Litherland and City of Liverpool against either Whitchurch or Sandbach on 6th May, with the winners going head to head a week later on 13th May on the ground of the higher placed finalist for the third promotion spot to replace New Mills, Nelson and Cammell Laird 1907. Now, stand back a few paces and look at the Football League tables. Whilst Sheffield United have secured promotion to the Championship from League 1, Bolton Wanderers will tomorrow go head to head for the second automatic promotion place with Fleetwood Town. Only 12 years ago, the Cod Army were playing in the same NW Counties Division 1 as St. Helens Town and, what’s more, Nathan Pond, still playing in the third tier, made his debut against Town at Knowsley Road. Not far behind Fleetwood are Accrington Stanley, who came with a late surge to try to claim a second successive play-off berth in League 2 and it wasn’t that long ago that they too were battling it out in the North West Counties League. It just goes to show what

NWCFL Review can be achieved with the right sort of drive, enthusiasm and luck plus, of course, a good measure of financial backing. Kirkham & Wesham FC were briefly members of NW Counties Division Two in 2007/08 season, at the end of which, they won the FA Vase at Wembley. They started the 2008/09 season under a new name – AFC Fylde – and swept all before them to go through the newly-named Premier Division at the first attempt and now stand proud Champions of Vanarama National League North, looking forward to taking their place in the National League next season, one step away from the Football League. With the 2022 logo embroidered on their shirts, they appear well on target for EFL membership with a brand-new stadium and fan-base to boot, no doubt boosted to some extent by disaffected Blackpool FC supporters. The progress made by FC United of Manchester in their early days in the NW Counties has been well documented and they too have a new stadium and play at Step 2 of the pyramid, along with former Counties members Bradford Park Avenue and Stalybridge Celtic, who left our league many years ago, but Curzon Ashton and Salford City have departed along the same route in more recent times and, one level lower, Workington and Nantwich Town made the play-off semi-finals (albeit unsuccessfully) in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, with Warrington Town and Ashton United not too far behind.

Spare a thought for former Counties clubs Skelmersdale United and Burscough, who have both finished bottom of their respective Evo-Stik divisions. In all probability, Burscough will be re-joining the Hallmark Security League next season, although Northwich Victoria have also been relegated from the Evo-Stik First Division (South) and will have to be accommodated in a Step 5 league. As the Hallmark Security League looks forward to the challenges of next season and the opportunities opening up for those clubs who will be successful, let us not forget those clubs who have slipped out of the league over the years, some of whom were long-established clubs whose demise came as quite a shock: Rossendale United, Great Harwood Town, Norton United, Stone Dominoes, Flixton, Oldham Town (later Oldham Boro’), Rochdale Town, Formby, Leek CSOB and Wigan Robin Park. St. Helens Town are the only club to have been in membership for all 35 years of the league’s existence and stand top of the league’s table with 1779 points from 1356 games played up to the end of last season. Newcastle Town and Glossop North End come next, followed by our nearest current challengers, Maine Road with 1618 points from 1166 matches. Fifth placed are Bootle and sixth Atherton Collieries. As Town’s first 33 years in membership were all spent in the league’s top flight, their place at the head of any top-flight table will be secure for some years as no current member of the Premier Division is within striking distance as they have all spent several seasons in the lower division.

A Brief History The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged Tommy O’Neil over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record Wembley,1987 attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An alltime club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April

St Helens Town 1948 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent mid-season form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early -season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30 th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

Club News St Helens Town and Pilkington FC have teamed up with the Liverpool County FA to host a Sixes Football tournament as part of the St Helens Council Sports Festival in July. The first St Helens Town FC and Pilkington FC Sixes Festival will take place on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th July 2017. The tournament, organised in association with the Liverpool County FA, will be running Open Age, Youth (U16s - U18s for 2017/18 season) & Women’s six-a-side tournaments will be an integral part of the 2017 St Helens Sports Festival taking place on Ruskin Drive Sports Ground. Saturday 8th July 10.30am - Open Age and Women’s tournaments Sunday 9th July 10.30am - Youth tournament All games will take place at the brand new Ruskin Drive 3G stadium and all pitches will be marked out prior to the competitions to FA specifications. Experienced, qualified FA

referees will be provided for all matches & FA small sided rules will apply. All teams will progress from group stages into either the Cup or Plate quarter-finals. Toilets, bar, hot and cold food and drinks all available within the Sportsground and extensive parking is available on site. The cost of entry is £45 per team (max 9 players - players may only play for one team throughout the tournament). A discount to £80 is offered for two entries from the same club in any one tournament.

Match Report v Have Some of Pat! by Kieran Ford Jamie Pattinson double sinks Town at Holker. St Helens Town made the “dreaded” long journey to Rakesmoor Park to face Holker Old Boys away from home, as both teams approached the climaxes of their respective campaigns. After Tuesday’s match, St Helens host already promoted Charnock Richard on Saturday, as their progression to the Premier Division was confirmed simultaneously to this fixture on Tuesday night. Holker face FC Oswestry Town before travelling to Litherland REMYCA on the last day who have guaranteed a play-off spot. Both teams are stranded in mid table and this was evident at the start of the game, with not many chances created as they struggled to keep the ball in the midfield. It had a typical end of season feel with both Holker and St Helens attempting to get to grips with the hard pitch at Rakesmoor. Unlike their terrific 5-0 victory in this fixture last season, Town couldn’t start as quickly as they liked, yet still created the first meaningful chances of the game. Joel Douglas looked impressive from the start as he continued to start in place of the injured Andy Gillespie. Holker Old Boys tried to follow up his goal on Saturday with the rebound but this was blocked. A series of ping pong in the area left both Town captain Ste Rigby, who flourished on his left-wing swansong last season, and the Holker goalkeeper worse for wear, but both could manage to continue. Douglas, drifting to the right-hand side, managed to cut in and create an opportunity for an effort but this could only hit the side netting. Andy Presho, filling in at left back as he has so many times this season, was guilty of giving the ball away just inside his own half, Michael Rushton capitalised playing in Jamie Molen but his shot went wide. Danny Lomax, recently signed from Cammel Lairds, is starting to show performances to rival another set of Lomax’s playing in blue at the start of the season. He showed this by playing a superb ball to release Douglas who attempted to take the ball round the goalkeeper when in the area, he was clattered down but the referee turn away any penalty appeals as a drab first half ended goalless. HT: Holker Old Boys 0-0 St Helens Town The 2nd half started off in much the same vein as the 1st as this contest looked to have a scoreless draw written all over it. However, Holker did start to create some chances that tested Adam Fairchild in the Town goal. The 1st was a powerful effort from range that forced him into a good save before Rushton was played in for his 3rd 1 on 1 attempt of the evening but still couldn’t find the net as Fairchild saved again.

The Holker keeper Ben Morsby couldn’t shake off his injury in the first half so was subbed off, leaving outfielder Guy Heffernan to go between the sticks. Town immediely started to test him and this was evident in the amount of men upfield for a blues corner. The set piece, taken by Alex Gillespie resulted in a goalmouth scramble that was eventually turned in by Danny Lomax to claim his first goal for the blues. The game kicked into life after this, and Holker responded 5 minutes later, left winger John-Paul Stanway supplied a through ball that found Jamie Pattinson in space who lobbed over Fairchild to put the hosts level. Pattinson was soon on the hunt for his 2nd and was found in space one again but his low drive produced a fine save from Fairchild once again. However, Fairchild had no stopping Holker’s eventual winner with 6 minutes left. A succession of fouls in dangerous areas had left Town risking the point, and this proved costly as Pattinson stepped up to put the dead ball into the top left hand corner leaving Fairchild motionless, and Town empty handed. Match Report v Brave Blues Battle Hard but Come Up Short by Kieran Ford

As the Hallmark Security League Division 1 comes to its conclusion, the warm and sunny weather is starting to blossom for the year, which was the case at Lambeth Grove as St Helens Town were foreshadowing next season by playing on an artificial pitch. This is something that the Blues will be doing from next season as they move into their new Ruskin Drive Stadium. These sides last met just over a month ago, with St Helens running out 2-0 victors at Volair Park. Since then, Stockport have had an inconsistent run of form with 3 victories but losing twice. St Helens have placed twice more in this period, with 3 wins but 3 defeats and a draw to City of Liverpool. A St Helens side that had made 5 changes from Thursdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s win over Ashton Town started well as the fresh players such as Luke Edwards, who came in for Dale Korie- Butler pressed the Stockport back line. 6 minutes in, Edwards forced a poor header from Conor Downes, he capitalised on this and half volleyed past the goalkeeper Lewis Fielding to give the visitors a score line that reflected their bright start. This early setback seemed to trigger a change for Stockport as they started to control the game themselves, causing havoc down the right-hand side that saw Ste Rigby at left wing back with Alan Gillespie resorting from a 4-2-3-1 to a 35-2. Jamie Hinchcliffe released Ezequiel Miranda who was in space but his longrange effort was caught by Fairchild. However, St Helens almost doubled their lead as a counter attack saw Luke Edwards lay off to Daniel Lomax in the centre circle, his audacious lob left Fielding scrambling but he recovered to tip the ball over. After this, Stockport continued to go forward, Ben Halfacre got on the end of a Hinchcliffe cross but his volley was well saved by Adam Fairchild. Ben Connolly then headed off the post, the ball landed at the feet of Hinchliffe but his poor touch meant he couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the shot away.

Stockport did equalise on 20 minutes as Connolly made up for his previous miss. The impressive Hinchliffe managed to skip past 2 St Helens defenders from the

The returning Blues centre back Liam Dodd had a chance to give St Helens the lead again right on half time but his header from an Edwards corner went just over the bar. HT: Stockport Town (Connolly, 20) 1 – 1 St Helens Town (Edwards, 6) St Helens started the 2nd half in the same way they started the 1st, with Luke Edwards again creating an early chance. He was played through by Andy Presho and just Stockport keeper Fielding was between him and the goal, but his attempt was tame and was saved. This even game was open and saw chances created at both ends, Stockport centre midfielder Lee Constantine went past Dom Whelan, who was playing at centre back today due to his impressive defensive display’s at right back, but the home team player could only drag his shot wide. Stockport took the lead for the first time just before the hour mark with Hinchliffe again the architect. His threaded through ball found Ben Halfacre who slotted into the corner to grab his 10th goal of the season. Stockport added a 3rd just less than 15 minutes before the end, putting daylight in between the two sides in an even contest. The game had come full circle for Conor Downes, as it was his mistake that lead to St Helens’ goal, however for this he supplied a terrific through pass for substitute Edward Driver who beat Fairchild from close range. St Helens were still pushing for a way back into the match, with a triple substitution made earlier on in the half. This saw the Gillespie brothers, Andy and Alex, along with Ed Pegler come on. Both brothers had more of an influence as the match came to its conclusion. An Alex Gillespie corner found Ste Rigby at the near post but his flick on could only hit the far, the rebound fell to Dom Whelan who could only fire over. It was then Andy’s turn to create, he broke down the right and squared the ball to Paul “Pablo” Carney, but he could only hit the post and not follow his goal from Thursday night. Managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Notes Good afternoon everybody and welcome to our final game of the 2016/17 season and our last game at Volair Park home of Prescot Cables before we head back to St. Helens next season to our new home at Ruskin Drive. Many congratulations to our visitors today Charnock Richard who have already secured promotion to the NWCFL Premier in the their first season in the league. That is a tremendous achievement so very well done to all concerned In our previous meeting way back in August we emerged victorious 3-1 so let's hope we can repeat the feat today! Interestingly, only three players from our 16 man squad on that day remain with us from that game Webby, Ste Rigby and Andy Presho a statistic which gives an insight into the tremendous turnover of players we have experienced this season. Our recent two games away at Stockport and Holker Old Boys both resulting in defeats which have really exposed the lack of depth in our squad. We have generally been quite fortunate this season and avoided having too many players being injured at once but with 4 or 5 key players missing we have really struggled to maintain the momentum of our previous three games which had resulted wins against Chadderton and Ashton Town along with a draw against City of Liverpool. Ant Whelan, George and Webby are all out for the season plus Andrew, Ant Dunleavey and Adam Donohue all very doubtful again for today leaves us pretty much bare bones once again. In fact for the long trip up to Holker we travelled with only 12 fit players not a great situation We started our run of 4 games in eight days with a home win against Ashton Town a game which saw the visitors relegated and in which we never really ever got going but goals from Ste and Pablo saw us home for the three points. Last Saturday saw us make the trip to Stockport a game which despite a depleted squad we made enough clear chances to win the game but in fairness they kept the ball very well after we took an early lead but then failed to convert our other chances. In fairness we had to work very hard to keep them out and on balance they finished the second half the stronger and deserved the 3-1 win in the end. A number of positives can taken be taken from the game in terms of a number of the individual performance but overall very disappointing to lose. A similar story at Holker where we took the lead through Liam or was it Danny from an Alex Gillespie corner after failing to take anything from 3 or 4 first half opportunities only to then fall to a sucker punch equaliser that started with our free kick. To complete a miserable night Holker scored a decent late free kick to take the spoils. The season has had plenty of talking points on the non playing side my enforced 3 month USA absence followed by the departure of Joint manager Nick plus the delays in getting Ruskin Drive ready for NWCFL football to name a few. Despite all the change I feel we have a now strong settled management team with Lee and Nick and an excellent Physio in Lisa . On the playing side we have almost finished the season with a completely different squad to the one that started the season. As a manager you always have mixed feelings when losing good players on one hand you are happy for the player if he is moving up or earning money but you also feel disappointed that you are losing a valuable player. On the other hand been extremely fortunate to have replaced the players we have lost with some great acquisitions Adam in goal, Webby, Dono, Pablo, Luke, Dale, Danny, Liam, George, Dunny and Joel and it would be nice to think we can hang onto all these players in the close season. A special mention for young â&#x20AC;&#x2122;keeper Adam who has been absolutely superb after securing a starting place in December he has never looked back. Overall I think the thing that has probably surprised me the most is the strength of the 1st Division this season starting with the revamped Widnes (1st) and Whitchurch (5th) outfits, four new teams Charnock (2nd), CoLFC (3rd), Sandbach (6th), Prestwich (7th) have all proved to be excellent teams Only REMYCA of the leading teams from last year have kept the pace with the new challenge and we will have to work extremely hard in the summer to improve our position given 3 of these sides will still be here next season.

That just leaves me to thank everybody for their great support over season I know we have disappointed on a few occasions and I'm sure the players will have learnt from their experiences but generally they have provided some great effort a number of epic comebacks and shown great character. League News Atherton Collieries players and officials will be special guests of Super League side Leigh Centurions when they host Wakefield Trinity next Saturday evening. The Colls team and officials will parade the Premier Division championship trophy around the Leigh Sports Village pitch at half-time, and will be guests in the Premier Club afterwards, for a presentation from the Leigh Centurions club. Colls manager Michael Clegg said: “The squad are well up for coming to the game. It’s a great gesture from Leigh Centurions and something the lads will absolutely love. Colls has become a little Leigh Centurions hub lately, a meeting point for a few of the Atherton fans before they come to the Leigh game, so there is definitely a link between the two clubs. This season we showed that with ability, determination and desire you can go anywhere.” Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont said: “I am really pleased for everyone at Atherton Colls and in particular Michael Clegg. Whilst this is massive in the club’s history and a surprise to some it is no surprise to me the success Michael has achieved with his group of players. “He is a really motivated and well liked lad which is vital for a coach that is going to bring not only the best in people, but a belief they are better than they are and can achieve more than they ever thought possible. He used to work in my business and from talking to him and even witnessing it myself I know he would die for that group of people. He is a really calm lad, a real genuine, likeable lad but he has a fire in his belly when it comes to his team and standing up for them. “We often spoke about rugby and also his successes and it doesn’t surprise me that he has absorbed some of those chats and applied them to his football team because that is the person he is. Driven, articulate and ambitious, a born achiever, but measured and respectful. He came through the professional junior ranks so understands the game and the players and he respects them. I genuinely believe he will continue to grow in the game as he has those attributes. It makes it even more sweet when it is his home town team. “You could see they had something special when you watch the fantastic video they did for Ben’s Wish, a great gesture in itself but it had an underlying message I could sense. I am really looking forward to applauding their fantastic achievement when they parade their trophy on their lap of honour and I know our fans will pay them a vocal appreciation of support. I am also looking forward to meeting them after the game and buying Michael a pint as he certainly deserves one!”

At last Saturday’s game v Stockport Town club Vice President Jimmy Barrett brought along a number of old programmes from his personal collection along with an original 1987 FA Vase poster. The poster will be framed and placed on display in the club’s new hospitality room at Ruskin Drive - a timely find in a week which has seen the cub celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the epic 3-2 win over Warrington Town.

Why sponsor Town? When I told a friend that I’d sponsored town for £100, they looked at me askance and asked “why? You haven’t got a business, you don’t need the (excellent) publicity” and in a way that summed up one of the main reasons for actually doing it. I’m a St Helens lad through and through, born and bred and proud of it! The town has taken a few knocks over the years, with probably a few more to come in the current age of austerity, but the town has had its share of highlights especially in the sporting arena. Saints obviously take the limelight in terms press space but we’ve had plenty of other bright spots in many sports. One of these I was privileged enough to witness, at Wembley on the 25th of April 1987 when Town beat Warrington. £5 for a ticket sat just a couple of rows behind the Royal Box, best spec I’ve ever had at Wembley and I’ve been there a few times! A great game, some good goals and a fantastic result! However, as a young lad my first loves were really Saints and, because my dad and his dad were Reds, Liverpool FC. My interest in Town started after visiting my grandmother, who lived on Carnegie Crescent and, as a young lad in the mid 70s, whenever I had spare time on a Saturday, which wasn’t much with my own sporting activities, I’d jump on the 27A, visit “mother” and she’d feed me and give me a couple of bob and I’d make my way home. Until one day on leaving her flat, I heard a bit of noise from past the Boilermakers which drew me down Hoghton Road (and over the fence I have to say). Ever since then I catch the, very, occasional game but would always look out for the results and read match reports. As I grew older and gained responsibilities, work and family, my time became scarce and I stopped watching football as a live spectator and started to become a telepubby! But as my kids got older I started to take them to Anfield, first for the odd European game as a birthday treat and then more regularly. I’ve had some good memories of watching Liverpool with them especially with my son in Istanbul. However, after having a hip replaced earlier last summer during my time off from work recuperating I managed to catch three or four “home” games at Brocstedes Park, even dragging my son for the FA cup game against Atherton Collieries and I got a little bit of a flutter. However normality returned and time constraints and the lure of bright lights of Anfield brought this particular dalliance to a close. This close season as I was paying for my season ticket at Anfield, a mind blowing £834, I started to mull over the situation. How can I, in all sincerity, justify spending that amount of money on a club that, to be honest, doesn’t need to charge those prices in order to maintain its flawed business model. To sit in a stadium that, apart from three or four games a season, is frankly a library, and is increasingly filling with customers who are the cash cows for corporation and don’t really have a connection with the club.

My visits to Town have been to watch players who, whilst they may harbour ambitions of playing pro in the prem, are holding down jobs or getting an education and dealing with real life. Playing a game for love and enjoyment and watched by people who care, not just about their club, but about the game and also the communities that they live. A club like town is so much more than a football club. It provides focus for young and old, players and supporters alike and it provides hope and opportunity. So returning to the question asked in the first paragraph, no, I don’t get publicity from the money I’ve spent, but I do get a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that I’ve helped the club keep its head above water and bring it closer to a return home to St Helens. I could and should probably do more, as should a lot of other people, to be a part of securing the long term future, this is a start for me, hopefully others can do the same.
