Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League, First Division encounter against City of Liverpool. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It been a weird 8 days since we were last here a Volair Park hosting promotion chasing Whitchurch Alport in front of a decent and vociferous crowd a large element of whom were backing the visitors. Before I get into the details of the game a huge vote of thanks must go to Whitchurch as a club as prior to kick off they generously donated £200 to Melissa’s Smile Fund. On to the game and the hosts got off to an ominous start when they took the lead after 8 minute through Luke Walley but Town responded well and Ste Rigby levelled matters after 23 minutes with a fine finish from an acute angle his seventh goal since February and soon afterwards skipper Andy Gillespie put the hosts in front 6 minutes later a shanked clearance was collected by Gillespie and he slalomed through the Whitchurch defence before firing home for his 24th goal of the season. Town were unlucky not to have gone into the break two goals up when Luke Edwards hit a powerful drive which beat the visiting stopper but struck the crossbar and went behind harmlessly for a goal kick. The hosts were again unlucky not to have extended their lead moments after the restart when an Edwards cross was met by Gillespie and his flick hit Whitchurch’s left hand upright before being collected by a grateful Daniel Read in the visitors goal. The remainder of the half remained to the visitors who pushed Town further and further back Carl Everall levelled matters in the 50th minute. The visitors in need of a maximum return in their promotion push probed the Town backline for the remainder of the half with Town looking dangerous on the break. The destination of the point were decided in the 86th minute when a centre from the left wing caused problems in the Town box and was turned home by defender Adam Donohue who hadn’t put a foot wrong prior to that point. There was to be late drama when a corner saw Donohue almost make amended for putting through his own goal heading just wide and with almost the final action of the contest Ant Whelan released Rigby who was one on one with the keeper Read who made an excellent save to seal the points for the visitors. We then took the short trip to take on neighbours Widnes and after putting in a great performance against high flying Whitchurch we turned in a less than impressive one against another of the sides with hopes of taking the title come the end of April. The 8-0 scoreline was hard to take on the day especially when five of the goals were scored by ex-Town players but at present there is a large gap between the haves and the have nots in our division. We looked to bounce back quickly as we took the tricky trip to take on a Chadderton outfit who had left Volair Park 3-1 winners a couple of weeks previously. The first half an hour was scoreless before Town broke the deadlock profiting from an own goal before Dale Korie-Butler doubled the lead. Chaddy quickly halved the deficit before the break and levelled shortly after the restart concerned furrowed brows were seen in the Town contingent but they needn't have worried as Ant Whelan restored the lead and injury time goals from Korie-Butler and Andy Presho made the points safe. Town will be looking to avenge two defeats at the hands of today’s visitors a 5-1 reverse in the league a 3-0 First Division Cup Quarter Final exit and will know they will have to turn in a good performance to take anything from this afternoons contest. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today The genesis of this club goes all the way back to 2008 and can be traced through lots of small meetings, chats, encounters, and talk. The club that has now become City of Liverpool FC had hovered just beneath the surface for 6 years before an angry “call to arms” email was sent out to 10 likeminded people in October of 2014. A meeting was hastily arranged and a 4 hour discussion ensued between 6 people, although it could rightly be called “putting the world to rights” as much as it could be called a meeting. Not much came out of that first meeting other than a general consensus that we would all meet again soon and keep talking. The next meeting got cancelled at very late notice when two people couldn’t attend and by the time we met again in November, our numbers were down to 3 people only; Paul Manning, Peter Furmedge & Martin Jones but that meeting in November 2014 was a crucial milestone in the history of the club. At that meeting the question was asked “When is this Football Club going to play football” and the process began that concluded with our successful appeal at Wembley on June 8th 2016. We all agreed that August 2016 was when we should be playing football, giving ourselves a generous 21 months to achieve our dream. Once we agreed the target date, we worked backwards trying to work out the milestones and hurdles we would have to get over to be playing in what is now the Hallmark Security Football League Division One. The notes taken that night, scribbled on a whiteboard formed the basis of the Timeline document which we placed on our website and became a quasi-business plan for us. It’s important to note that throughout this period we had reason to believe that we would start life with our own ground in the City Boundaries and a lot of time was spent nurturing relationships with councillors and executives to this end. The prospect of a ground share was not on the agenda at all, otherwise we could easily have targeted August 2015 as a start date and life would have been a lot simpler – but hindsight is a wonderful thing! Wavertree Athletics Centre had been identified as our #1 target with the small Council owned stadium at Walton Hall Park #2. It was felt that with all councils divesting themselves of parks and leisure centres by 2017, we could possibly “Asset Transfer” either of these facilities and take ownership of them. By early 2015, the executive committee grew to 4 with the addition of Stuart Fitzgerald but nothing much was happening generally – we had given ourselves too much time, so we gently nudged and prodded away at politicians and people who we felt could help. In May 2015, work began in earnest as we decided the various roles that we would each undertake voluntarily on behalf of the club. Paul Manning was to be Operations Director, Peter Furmedge was Finance Director, Stuart Fitzgerald was Commercial Director and Martin Jones was to be Sporting Director when the football actually started. The website and social media were launched in May 2015, and interest began to build. In addition to being the Finance Director, Peter Furmedge was also the resident expert on the legalities of a supporter owned football club and as such he called our very first public meeting for 21st September 2015, in order to legally form the club as a Community Benefit Society, owned by its members. Around 50 people attended that first meeting at the Quakers meetings rooms, we gained the support of the crowd to form the club. Peter worked with Supporters Direct and confirmation duly arrived – We were a supporter owned football club! After that meeting

City of Liverpool we had some great media coverage from The Liverpool Echo, Radio City and also the Guardian and a buzz was really starting to grow about the new club. October 14th saw us receive a massive blow as Liverpool City Council confirmed that they could not allow us a lease on either targeted facility as Wavertree was too small to host a football pitch and various organisations objected to us playing at Walton Hall Park. As a new club, our application to join the NWCFL had to be in by 31st December 2015, so given the Christmas period we had roughly 8 weeks to secure a ground share or shelve our plans for another 12 months, which bearing in mind we had already been working for a year and had built a decent following and groundswell of opinion, was not an option. So the search began for a ground share. We emailed literally every club or facility that could host Step 6 football within a 35 mile radius and got few replies. None of the other local non-league clubs seemed to want to help us play football! Then a breakthrough came towards the end of November when Neil Prince put us in touch with Bootle FC. Calls were made and emails flew and literally within a matter of 10 days we had our ground share agreement to play at the Delta Taxis Stadium – what a relief. On we went into 2016 full of hope and endeavour. We had an interview with the management committee of the Hallmark Security League in February at Bootle, which seemed to go well and soon enough they had confirmed that they were supporting our bid for a place in the league. Our 1st members meeting took place at Jack Jones House and was well supported. We made the manager’s role available for application and got a good response from varied parts of the football spectrum. We wanted actual, nailed on, NWCFL experience, preferably experience of being promoted out of the 1st Division. We whittled 23 applications down to 5 candidates and interviews took place. Everyone was good in their own right, but 1 man stood out like a sore thumb; Simon Burton. We now had a Hallmark Security League Premier League ground and a Hallmark Security League Premier League manager. In order for a new club to join the National League Pyramid at Step 6, the club had to show exceptional circumstances and so on April 20th 2016 our 3 man delegation travelled down to Wembley to make our case. We were confident and after maybe an hour and a half, we came out of a meeting with a 4 man committee from the FA, satisfied that we had made our case and given ourselves the best opportunity to succeed, if indeed there was a space in the league – which was by no means certain at this point. The FA leagues committee could not just make a dry decision of “shall we let COLFC in or not?” it was a complex nationwide jigsaw puzzle involving promotions, relegations, clubs folding and other considerations too. We were told to expect a decision towards the end of May. May 21st, 4pm and an email arrives – We had not been placed in the Hallmark Security League but instead been placed in the Liverpool County Premier League – Phone calls fly, emails too, the phone is red hot, no-one can believe it, but we are not in. But a Hallmark Security League press release gives us hope, Northwich Manchester Villa have resigned from the league at the last minute, there is still a space and the FA confirm we have leave to appeal. June 8th . Wembley again. 3 man FA appeal panel, Paul Manning and Peter Furmedge arguing against the decision of the FA leagues committee, who are also present to defend their original decision to place us at Step 7. An hour of legal-esque arguing later and we head back to Liverpool with the promise of a decision later that day. Our heads are spinning. We got attacked for 45 minutes, but the tide did seem to turn our way in the last 15. It’s been 3 and a half hours now and nothing; this looks and feels bad. We’ve got 45 minutes to kill, so “let’s go for a pint”. Just as we walk into All Bar One the email arrives. Peter begins reading through the Appeal decision.......”Appeal board at Wembley” “3 Man Committee”....“decision of the Appeal board”......yes, yes come on......... ”The appeal is upheld”.......”Appeal fee to be refunded” “COLFC will play at Step 6 in season 2016” “This decision is final and binding and cannot be appealed by any party” cue jubilation, with a lot of Birmingham office workers staring at two middle aged scousers jumping up and down, hugging each other and shouting “YES!” very loudly.
We had the decision that we had worked so long and hard for and the relief was palpable. We had achieved our dream and that jubilant moment is the end of the Story So Far. The rest of the story should rightly belong to Simon Burton, his coaching staff and players which began on July 9th at Prestatyn Town.

Chairman’s Notes Good afternoon and a very warm Good Friday welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League First Division encounter with high flying City of Liverpool. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with today’s match officials and our own following are treated to an entertaining encounter. Many thanks to today’s match sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool and our match ball sponsors Beer Engine your continued support is greatly appreciated. The ‘Purps’ arrive as the end to an amazing season draws to an end for the league newcomers – Simon Burton’s charges have been in the title and promotion race for the whole season and having reached the Reusch First Division Cup final they will also be looking to overturn a 02 deficit against Chadderton next week in the Macron Challenge Cup semi-final second leg. Our visitors have continued to pull in impressive crowds at the Delta Taxi Stadium and have provided a financial boost to many clubs they’ve visited throughout 2016-17. I am sure one or two First Division club treasurers are secretly hoping they are edged out of the promotion race and we see them again next season. As the number of games played by the top six teams level out it is clear that with little over two weeks of the season remaining it could go any way with just three points separating Charnock Richard at the top (82 points) and Litherland REMYCA in fifth placed on 79 points! Sandwiched in between are Widnes, CoLFC and Whitchurch Alport who all have title aspirations. The last week has provided a number of talking points at the club with our thumping at Widnes last Saturday being a real low point. Either side of our visit to the Select Security Stadium we hosted Whitchurch Alport, losing 2-3 in a very tight affair with an excellent effort for the team and then on Tuesday evening the lads bounced back to complete an impressive 25 win at in-form Chadderton who had won 7 and drawn 2 of their last 10 games! As some of you will know we’ve been supporting a local girl Melissa (Melissa’s Smile Fund) who suffers from Angelman’s Syndrome – her charity logo has appeared on our U18s playing kit this season and our 2017 calendar sales have help her fundraising. At last Thursday’s game v Whitchurch I was stunned by generosity of our visitors who kindly donated £200 towards the fund. There is a full article elsewhere in today’s programme. There’s plenty of progress at Ruskin Drive as the dressing rooms complex has started to rise out of the ground (photos later in the programme)! The club’s hospitality room has also been delivered and the work on the pitch-side perimeter fence will start week commencing 24th April. We’re back in action next Thursday evening when relegation threatened neighbours Ashton Town are the visitors to Volair Park. Enjoy the game . . . John McKiernan, Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

Match Report Red army march on as Town are defeated by Kieran Ford
A 7-3 battering of Daisy Hill last time out had given Whitchurch Alport hope of maintaining a promotion push, but after St Helens Town’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Atherton LR on the weekend, it was going to be a difficult test for the team from Shropshire. Before the kick off, a presentation was made on the pitch of a donation made from Whitchurch Alport for the Melissa’s Smile Fund. Melissa is a young girl that is well known to St Helens Town as the club have worked closely with her fund, this season in particular. She was unfortunately born with a rare condition called Angelman Syndrome which has ultimately taken away her ability to speak. What she lacks in words, Melissa makes up for in her smile, which is infectious and makes anyone around her instantly warm to her presence. You can donate to Mellissa’s fund here. The club would like to thank Whitchurch Alport for their very generous donation. Onto the action, and the away side started the brighter, as they looked to do the double over St Helens Town, after a 3-0 victory at Yockings Park in December. Whitchurch number 7 Luke Walley cut inside but his shot was well saved by Town keeper Adam Fairchild, with Alport captain Simon Everall putting the rebound wide. Walley made up for this miss in the 8th minute by sticking in a rebound of his own from a Whitchurch attempt to put the visitors a goal to the good. Things got from bad to worse for Town, as in form centre back Liam Dodd had to go off with an injury, with Adam Donohue replacing him. This change seemed to have the adverse effect on Town as they started to play with more confidence. A driving run from Andy Presho split the Alport shape, he then played a terrific pass to Andy Gillespie, who’s 1 vs 1 was saved. The ball fell to Luke Edwards who was looking to net his 1st goal since February, but he dragged his shot wide. Town’s positivity paid off on 23 minutes, as Ste Rigby charged down Alport defender Luke Goddard, forcing him to give the ball away. Rigby charged down on goal, slotting in a calm finish past the goalkeeper to give St Helens a deserved equaliser. 6 minutes later the Blues turned the game on its head, as a poor clearance from Whitchurch keeper Daniel Read found Andy Gillespie. The club captain wiggled through 3 defenders before firing past the keeper, to get his 24th goal of the season. Town were unlucky not to take a two goal advantage into the break when a thunderous strike from Luke Edwards rattled Read's crossbar and went out for a goal kick. HT: St Helens Town (Rigby, 23) (Andy Gillespie, 29) 2–1 Whitchurch Alport (Walley, 8) Although Alport looked rattled at the end of the first half, they came out in the second looking stronger, as St Helens looked to preserve their lead. However, they had a scare less than a minute into the 2nd half, as Luke Edwards crossed for Gillespie who looked to add his 2nd, but his header was saved, almost the perfect start for Town . Whitchurch managed to equalise early on in the 2nd period, as a shot from Michael Blundell was turned in by an unmarked Simon Everall to get his 27th goal of the campaign. Now that the visitors had the vocal support of their fans once again, this made it hard for Town to push up the pitch as positively as when they silenced Alport’s fans in the 1st half. Blundell, who looked to add one himself after his effort was turned in for Whitchurch’s equaliser, controlled a high ball well outside the area but his shot went wide as the away side looked to grab a much needed 3rd goal. Town always have an attacking threat, even when they are under the cosh, and they managed to create some opportunities themselves. Gillespie laid the ball off to Dale Korie-Butler, but surprisingly his shot floated over the bar. Rigby was next to have a chance to give Town the lead again, as a good cross from Ant Whelan found his head but it was straight at the keeper. After a period of pressure, Whitchurch managed to snatch the lead late on, as a whipped cross from the left went in off the head of an unfortunate Adam Donohue, as the Red Army went into ecstasy. Town had chances to equalise late on, with keeper Adam Fairchild up for the corner at the death, the ball fell to Donohue who could have made amends for his own goal, but his header went wide. Ant Whelan played through Ste Rigby with the final kick of the match, but his shot was well saved past the post by the goalkeeper. FT: St Helens Town (Rigby, 23) (Andy Gillespie, 29) 2–3 Whitchurch Alport (Walley, 8) (Carl Everall, 50) (Adam Donohue OG, 86)

A Tribute to ERIC BOND – A GIANT OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL by Glyn Jones PART 2 Eric Bond’s career with St. Helens Town began in 1951 and ended, as a player, in 1971. It covered 20 years, 108 games and eight goals. With two appearances right at the beginning, his third outing came over 12 years later and his final two games required another five years to complete, but that hardly begins to tell the full story. He played 34 games (3 goals) in 1964/65 and 40 games without scoring in 1965/66, then another 15 games in 1966/67, netting twice, before taking on a player/ manager role in the Reserves for a number of seasons and he was still in charge in 1977/78, featuring on a team photograph with his charges at McDonald Avenue, Blackbrook. Eric’s final two first team games came in the 1970/71 season. In between times, he had helped out local rivals Wigan Rovers, obtaining an FA permit to turn out for that club as a player in October 1973 whilst under contract as a Town player. Among Eric’s papers are his contract for the 1965/66 season, which saw St. Helens Town pay him £1.50 per week basic wages during the season, together with £1 appearance money, £1 win bonus and 50p for a draw in the first team, with half those rates in the reserves. He had earlier signed a contract with Pwllheli for £4 per match for the duration of the 1963/64 season. Whilst playing under permit at Wigan Rovers, he was considered an amateur and could not be paid. Eric’s family has put at this club’s disposal a good deal of his collection of memorabilia, including programmes, photographs and original correspondence, many of which are used to illustrate these articles. The letters and postcards he received, notifying him of his selection for Liverpool County FA teams, Liverpool FC games and training make fascinating reading, particularly the arrangements to meet up at the Landing Stage for the Seacombe Boat to catch the ferry to New Brighton for the match are a relic of times gone by. Among Eric Bond’s contemporaries in the Liverpool County FA side back in 1951/52 were three teammates who went on to play for Everton first team, namely Ken Rea (46 games), George Kirby (26 games, 9 goals) and John Tomlinson, who played two games. Steve Burtenshaw played against him for Sussex: he had a long career for Brighton & Hove Albion, playing over 200 games for the Seagulls, going on to serve on the coaching staff at both Arsenal and Everton, including spells as caretaker manager at both clubs. At Everton, he was

Eric Bond in charge for 4 games between Billy Bingham and Gordon Lee in January 1977. Although he did not win a game from the dugout at Goodison, he safely negotiated the First Leg of the League Cup Semi-Final against Bolton Wanderers, which ended in a 1-1 home draw. Eric was a good friend of Rainhill’s finest son, Alan A’Court, who was slightly younger than Eric, and they were both on the books at Anfield together. He had been reserve to Eric in the County FA Final against Sussex. A’Court served the Liverpool club with great distinction throughout their eight-year spell in the old Second Division, playing 381 games for the Reds. Eric went to watch him play for Young England on the eve of the cup final at Highbury in 1957 and A’Court went on to star for England in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. Away from football, Eric Bond found work as an electrician for the National Coal Board, initially at Wood Pit, Haydock. He enjoyed a testimonial for 10 years’ service with Earlestown at Vista Park and whilst there, he played in every position, including goalkeeper. He went on to serve the club as player, player/manager, manager of the reserve team and trustee and he was well into his 40s when he finally hung up his boots. Even after that, he went on to serve with dignity and pride, the St. Helens Combination and the Liverpool County FA for many years. Eric sadly passed away in March 2016 and a few months later, so did the St. Helens Combination in what would have been its one hundredth year. Eric’s legacy lives on, not just in his memories, but in the form of a trophy, donated by his family, given to the Youth team Player of the Year at the Annual Presentation Evening.

A Brief History The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged Tommy O’Neil over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record Wembley,1987 attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An alltime club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April

Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent mid-season form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early -season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30 th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

League News Cheadle Town will be jetting off to China in May to take part in four matches and, in turn, notch up their 100th overseas match since the club’s inception in 1961.
The trip came about in collaboration with Steve Bellis - former Commercial Director of Stockport County - who is now Director of a company called Kickworldwide, whose aim is to build, support and service grassroots football in countries without a sophisticated football development structure. Cheadle Town Chairman Chris Davies has experienced every single trip abroad but is no less excited by the prospect of travelling to China:
“Ever since 1963 - when the trips began - the club has continued to fulfil a tradition of playing football across the world because we understand that there is a lot to learn from playing teams of different nationalities who appreciate the beautiful game. “Over the years we have been honoured to meet some wonderful people including Brazilian star Jairzinho and the former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Ghandi. We have also played in the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City and are the only UK-based club to play in Cuba” The China trip will add another unique element in that Cheadle Town will be the first UK-based club to play in the Shaanxi province - considered to be one of the cradles of Chinese civilisation - as they will be playing in its capital Xian, one of the four great ancient capitals of China. In between matches they will be conducting activities in accordance to Kickworldwide’s ethos, such as providing training and coaching to local schools. The squad depart Manchester on Saturday 20th May for Beijing making use of Hainan Airlines’ brandnew direct service - before moving on by high-speed train to Xian. The four matches will pit Cheadle Town against teams from China’s third and fourth tiers and the club expect to have the list of their opponents confirmed within the next couple of weeks. The squad have already met Peter Gao - the China Consultant for Kickworldwide - who will be acting as host and translator for the trip to sort out the necessary visa documents, as well as trying to pick up some key Mandarin phrases! There are various sponsorship opportunities available for individuals and businesses alike. Anyone interested should get in touch with the Cheadle Town Chairman Chris Davies on (0161) 428 2510 or 07711 670782 or you can email cheadletownfc@icloud.com

Match Report v Dale at The Double as Town Bounce Back by Kieran Ford The Blues show their metal with emphatic away performance. St Helens Town had a point to prove after Saturday’s hammering by Widnes, but they were to face another tough test at the ARK Fleetech Stadium at Chadderton who had only lost 1 of their previous 5. In their previous meeting 3 weeks before, Chadderton had come out 3-1 victors at Volair Park, so Town were looking for revenge and to gain momentum before the end of the season. Town started on the back foot, as they couldn’t get the ball out of defence for a prolonged period of time as “Chaddy” looked to build on their recent Macron Challenge Cup semifinal victory over City of Liverpool. An early free kick from Matthew Crothers found captain Dale Minor in space but his close-range header could only go over the bar. Town weren’t in the mood to sit back like Saturday, and created chances of their own. Joel Douglas provided a teasing cross that found Andy Gillespie, but his acrobatic effort was cleared by Minor who was helping at the other end of the field. It was then Gillespie’s brother Alex’s turn to try his luck from range after a Dale Korie-Butler shot was blocked into his path, but his shot went way over the bar. Town, looking a real danger on the counter attack, continued to create chances from set-pieces, Alex Gillespie crossed to his brother Andy from a corner but his glancing header went wide.

Chadderton Just after the half hour mark, the game really came to life. Alex Gillespie again threatened from a set piece, his terrific free kick from the right-hand side went in off Chadderton’s James Curley to give Town the lead In a tight contest so far. As I was still tweeting about the previous goal, Town made it 2 to sucker punch the home side. Dale Korie-Butler bared down on goal on the left, before slotting into the far corner, to shock the Chadderton faithful. Town’s 2 goal advantage didn’t last long, 2 minutes later the home team’s Jack Tuohy was given too much time at the edge of the box to curl an effort into the far corner and to complete an action-packed first half. HT: Chadderton (Tuohy, 36) 1-2 St Helens Town (Own Goal, 33) (Korie-Butler, 34) The second half began as the first ended, as Chadderton were the team to come quickest out the blocks. They equalised 5 minutes after the restart as a volleyed cross from James Curley, looking to make amends at the right end, was backheeled into the net from Michael Moss, giving Chadderton some momentum. However, Town took the lead again just before the hour mark. Another dangerous corner from Alex Gillespie was headed in by centre back for the night Ant Whelan for his 4th goal of the season to put Town in front again. It was Adam Fairchild’s time to stand up and be counted as Chadderton offered relentless pressure to try and equalise the game. Jack Tuohy looked to add his 2nd goal of the evening and was through on goal but produced a terrific save from Fairchild. Devon Matthews hit the bar with a header from a corner before Fairchild produced another strong save from a shot from Matthew Crothers, which added to his steady first half display. Fairchild producing a Peter Schmeichel esque performance in the presence of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, whose son Aaron was on the bench for Chadderton. Town caught Chaddy on the counter attack in injury time, and Dale Korie-Butler was through on goal but was brought down by substitute Nathan Quinllan for a penalty kick. DKB dispatched the spot kick to wrap the game up for the Blues. St Helens still had time to add a 5th, another pinpoint set piece from my man of the match Alex Gillespie found Ste Rigby down the left, he pulled the ball back for sub Andy Presho who fired home to secure Town an impressive victory. FT: Chadderton (Tuohy, 36) (Moss, 50) 2 – 5 St Helens Town (Own Goal, 33) (Korie-Butler, 34, 90+1) (Whelan, 57) (Presho, 90+3)

Match Report v Town Haunted by Former Players as Widnes Hit Them For 8 By Kieran Ford Red hot Widnes continue their promotion push in style This season has seen the departure of attackers the Lomax brothers (George and Chris) as well as midfield player Sam Sheen to Saturday’s hosts. Town’s loss has been Widnes’ gain as the home side have been on a remarkable run of form. This has included seven league wins in a row conceding only 1 goal in the process.
The game started as expected with the hosts on top, with main striker George Lomax creating two chances in the opening 2 minutes, first driving forward unchallenged before a disappointing effort, before linking up well with captain Kevin Towey but his header was well saved by Fairchild. Town should have opened the scoring when Ste Rigby nipped in to steal the ball from Mike Burke before breaking into the box but his shot was beaten away by home stopper. The Town keeper was beaten for the first time on 21 minutes, a long ball over the top beat a seemingly tired Town defence from Thursday nights’ exploits against Whitchurch Alport. George Lomax nipped in between Andy Webster and Fairchild to score an easy finish. The ball over the Town defence was always a threat, and this worked yet again for Widnes, this time a weak header from returning Adam Donohue didn’t find Fairchild in time and Lomax was again on hand to be first to the ball and score. Another lofted ball over the top was St Helens’ downfall as Lomax bagged his hat-trick against his former side. He once again beat Fairchild to the ball, lobbing it beyond the keeper before rounding him and tucking it into the net. HT: Widnes (George Lomax, 21, 35, 43) 3 – 0 St Helens Town

Widnes FC To make matters worse for St Helens Town, another of their former players, Chris Lomax, came on at half time. He took no time to make an impact, as he was given way too much time on the edge of the area to pick his spot and bent a terrific shot into the top corner leaving Fairchild with no chance. Chris Lomax was involved in Widnes’ 5th as Steven Akrigg was allowed to head in from his corner, for his first goal of the campaign. The centre half couldn’t believe his luck as he added his 2nd of the game 6 minutes later. It was a carbon copy of his first, heading in again from a corner as Town couldn’t wait to make the short trip back to St Helens. To perhaps rub salt in the wounds, another Town old boy Chad Whyte was substituted on. Much like the Lomax brothers, Whyte didn’t take long to influence the game. First, he stole the ball from Town substitute Daniel Lomax and burst down the left, he laid the ball off to Luke J Edwards who hit a crisp 1st time effort off the bar to give Widnes a 7th. Minutes later, it was Chris Lomax’s turn to attack down the left, he crossed for Whyte to hit a powerful volley past Fairchild and to compound a miserable day for St Helens Town. FT: Wides (George Lomax, 21, 35, 43) (Chris Lomax, 52) (Akrigg, 72, 79) (Luke J Edwards, 86) (Whyte, 88) 8 – 0 St Helens Town

Manager’s Notes A warm welcome to everyone to this afternoons very special Good Friday game against City of Liverpool FC. Now officially named the 10A Derby. Our opposition are right in the mix at the top of the table and will be going full out for 3 points so I'm expecting another great game at Cables. We have crossed swords twice previously this season with the Purples running out easy winners in the league game 5-1 in the league in September and a closer 3-0 affair in the Cup in November. We should be under no illusions how difficult this game will be and we will have to be at our very best to get anything out of it .
The Whitchurch game last Thursday was another pulsating affair We were the better side for most of the first half carving out some good chances and going in at half time 2-1 ahead with good finishes from Ste Rigby and Andy. The 2nd half saw Alport roaring back in the game to equalise and it stayed that way until the dying minutes when we conceded a very unfortunate own goal to hand Whitchurch the points . The general consensus was that the minimum we deserved was a point and probably overall the three points but opinions don't deliver points and we ended up with none which was very disappointing. This was followed by another tough game on Saturday at the Widnes astro which was without doubt our worst performance of the season shipping 8 goals. We never got to grips with the opposition or the pitch and were run ragged for 90 minutes. Defensively we were awful getting outmuscled on the ground and in the air where we were 2nd best on countless occasions. Our 4-2-3-1 format never managed to get into 1st gear as we turned over the ball as Widnes applied consistent pressure on us. One thing we should have learnt is that if you don't turn up in this league you will pay the price and we did. A shocking performance and a shocking result. Our third game in this 8 day spell saw us travel over to an in form Chadderton on Tuesday evening and with a depleted squad it was pleasing to say the least to come away with a thumping 5-2 win. The lads were fantastic with a 100% improvement compared to Saturday. I thought our change of formation together with a revamped back 4 led by Ant Whelan gave us a much better defensive platform. The midfield trio of new signing Danny Lomax Alex and Dale worked very hard to contain the very talented Chadderton midfield trio.
Our wide players Joel and Stevie led the counterattacking and put a big shift in defensively. A special mention to Alex with some more deadly set piece delivery leading to three of our goals. Dale also showed how effective he can be in the advanced midfield roles with a couple of goals. Let's hope the big crowd that is expected today provides a great atmosphere for what should be a great game. Alan Gillespie

Squires Gate have announced that current Chairman Stuart Hopwood is to step down at the end of the current season. A club statement said: Stuart is in his 11th season at the helm of the club having taken the role on and thrived in the position. Under his leadership Gate have become a well-respected NWCFL Premier Division side, one of the longest reigning in the league. Stuart leaves the club with a much-improved ground, two new stands and a functional clubhouse, in a stable financial position with no outstanding debt and a bright future. A big highlight under Stuart's tenure would have been Gate’s progression in the FA Vase which saw them come narrowly close to reaching the semi finals in season 2005-06. Only Hillingdon Borough stood in Gate’s way, winning that game on the day 2-0. The club would like to put on record its eternal gratitude for the efforts Stuart has gone to for the benefit of the club over the years and wish him well in his retirement. We would also like to thank his daughter Emma, who helped run the bar and kitchen on match days. We hope that both will not be strangers in the coming seasons, and welcome both to return to a game in the near future. At this moment in time the club are assessing several options, but would welcome anybody interested in becoming chairman of the club or joining the committee to get in contact with Secretary John Maguire on 07881 767443. Prestwich Heys striker Paul Tierney is planning to run the Manchester 10k in May to raise money for Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Charity. The Heys striker is taking part in the event to raise money for the charity, which offers support for young and old undergoing treatment at six hospitals in Manchester, after seeing their work when his daughter was seriously ill. Paul said: "In January 2015 my daughter Elle was diagnosed with Stage 4 mature B Cell Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. For a large part of that year we lived on Ward 84 at Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital whilst Elle received her treatment. It was the worst time of all of our lives. We want to show our appreciation to the charities who have helped us along the way and thought it was best if we begin with the people who saved her life. This is why I will be running the 10km on the 28th May 2017. I will not just turn up on the day and hope for the best. I will be training hard for this from now so if any wants to join me competing, please feel free. “Finally, please if you have anything spare to donate then any small amount would be greatly appreciated. The money goes directly to Ward 84 to help the other children like Elle going through similar courses of gruelling treatment.”

League News Whitchurch Alport made two sizeable charitable donations last week, one in their home town and one further afield. Before Thursday night’s game away to St. Helens Town, Alport’s committee had decided to donate £200 towards Melissa’s Smile Fund, an appeal which Town have been supporting and has been set up to support Melissa Grace, a 13 year old girl who suffers from a rare genetic condition called Angelman syndrome. Then on Saturday, Alport handed over another donation to Zac's Miracle appeal fund, which is raising money for a young local supporter Zac Harris, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy.
Melissa’s Smile Fund has been supported by St Helens Town since last summer, and after becoming aware of the support Town were providing, Alport decided to help too. The club’s press officer, Martin Wild, takes up the story. “We knew of Melissa’s plight because like us, Town have very active social media platforms. They are trying hard to raise awareness towards the little girl’s plight, and we picked up on it from there. "Melissa needs 24 hour care and will do so for the rest of her life as she has poor balance and movement and also suffers from epilepsy. "One of the characteristics of AS is that Melissa has a permanent smile despite the problems she encounters on a day to day basis – hence the Melissa’s Smile Fund. It was set up to raise £15,000 towards a sensory room which will enable Melissa – who sometimes sleeps just 3 hours a night and has the additional disability of being unable to speak – to spend time relaxing when frustrations become too much for her. Her condition is only likely to worsen as she gets older. “We should have played St Helens back in January, and were going to hand the money over to them then, but the game was postponed. We remained committed to donating when the game was rearranged, and we’re pleased that it was really well received both by St Helens and Kat, who is Melissa’s mum. Martin continued: “We have twice supported the foodbanks initiative backed by City of Liverpool during both games with them this season, and there’s a very healthy respect between both clubs because of it. "I sense the same thing will happen now with Town and although there has been some wonderful feedback after Thursday night’s game, it really is all about Melissa and her family, and not us. We’re a friendly, hospitable club and we like to do things the right way – off the pitch as well as on it.”
St. Helens Chairman, John McKiernan said: “St Helens Town’s support of Melissa’s fundraising started last summer, when the charity logo was chosen to appear on the front of the new playing kit of the club’s Under 18s team, who play in the North West Youth Alliance League. Town also nominated Melissa’s Smile Fund to benefit from the sales of our 2017 calendar which raised £300. “We wanted to help Melissa by promoting her fundraising activities and raising awareness of her condition. We received sponsorship support from, amongst others, Barnoldswick Town with Melissa’s calendar project, and our main sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have also been very generous in donating a number of superb raffle prizes to assist with a couple of fundraising events we’ve held. “When Whitchurch arrived at last Thursday’s match and told me about their own contribution, I was bowled over by their generosity. It wasn’t just the donation, but the fact that they had decided to support another club and our specific cause. It’s a real measure of their club and it’s something that’s unique about non-league football.”
