Talk of the Town Good evening, and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Hallmark Security League, First Division contest against Whitchurch Alport. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. We are back here at Volair Park swiftly after hosting Atherton LR here on Saturday. It turned out to be a good afternoon for the hosts as we avenged the 4-2 reverse at Crilly Park way back in September recording a comfortable 3- 0 victory. The starting line up saw the return from suspension of both Andy Gillespie and Dale Korie-Butler and both were to get back to action by getting on the scoresheet. Town had a good start to the contest as Liam Dodd opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour, heading home from a free kick and skipper Gillespie doubled the advantage just before the interval with a thunderbolt from 25 yards which a couple of keepers would have struggled to keep out! LR came at Town after the restart but the hosts withstood their attempts to get back in the contest and Korie-Butler made the destination of the points secure with a third goal ten minutes from time with a curling effort from just outside the box which gave the visiting stopper no chance. Taking Town to within striking distance of both Oswestry & Stockport Town in the two places above us in the league table and with a visit to Stockport to come in a couple of weeks a finish in the top half of the table is not beyond us. This evening we take on a much changed Whitchurch Alport outfit from the one against whom we recorded a club record 10-0 victory last April as they have turned last seasons bottom placed finish into a promotion push and currently sit in the play off places of the NWCFL Division One table. It will be a difficult afternoon for Town as we look record back to back home victories for the first since the turn of the year when we recorded three successes in a row defeating Holker, Eccleshall & Daisy Hill in the first three home games of 2017. Whitchurch Alport will be looking to do a double over Town after recording a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture in December and will be looking to solidify their place in the top six as they look to extend their season beyond 29th April. Whilst it is still mathematically possible for us to crash the play off party it would take us running the board through to the end of the season winning all of our games and hope that several of the teams above us in the table suffer losses of form and whilst this is probably not going to happen we have to concentrate on our own performances and amass as many points as we can in the final eight contests of the season starting this afternoon against Whitchurch. Let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them on to victory! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today Whitchurch Alport Football Club was formed in 1946, being named after Alport Farm, the home of local footballer Coley Maddox, who was killed in action during World War 2. The Club initially joined the Shrewsbury & District League, winning the League in 1947/48. In the search for a higher standard of football, the Club were elected to the Birmingham League for the 1948/49 season, however during the close season, news of a proposed Mid-Cheshire League reached the ears of a committee member and this led them to become founder members.
The Club had a very successful period during the 1950’s and 60’s, reaching numerous prestigious cup finals, including a first appearance in the Welsh Amateur Cup final, against Chirk AAA at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground in front of over 5,000 spectators, eventually losing in a replay. Alport were the first club to take the Mid-Cheshire championship out of the county in 1969/70. This was Alport's finest season as they reached the final of the League Cup losing 4-2 to Kidsgrove Athletic and also won the Shropshire County Cup. The Town Council accorded Alport a civic reception in acknowledgement of their achievements. In the past, the Club had strong links with Crewe Alexandra FC, with a number of players having worn the colours of both clubs including; Peter Gowans, Billy McGinley, Willy Mailey, Richard Wainwright, Kevin Rafferty & Nick Longley. Local lad Stuart Mason subsequently played for Wrexham, Liverpool, Crewe and Chester. Jimmy Quinn went on to play for numerous League clubs and became a Northern Ireland international. Alport have always been able to call on dedicated committee members, the best known probably being Bernard Painter, who served the Club in many capacities and was instrumental in the Club’s formation, remaining highly interested until his death when he was in his mid 90's. Season 1973/74 saw Alport defeat Cardiff College 2-1 to become the last English club to win the Welsh Amateur Cup. This is the highest honour achieved by the Club to date. For season 1983/84 & 1984/85 Alport’s committee took the decision to play local players only; a decision that was to have disastrous consequences, when they finished rock bottom of the League on both occasions. At the end of season 1984/85, the committee approached Peter Wainwright, then manager of Kidsgrove Athletic, to see if he would consider joining Alport. He agreed, on the condition that the local player policy was rescinded. Peter brought in ex Everton & Crewe Alex goalkeeper Willy Mailey as assistant and revived the fortunes of the Club. Since joining, Peter has served as a manager, player, groundsman, Secretary, Chairman and is the current President, in addition to serving on the Cheshire League Committee. In the 2012/13 season the Club’s committee took the decision to drop into the Shropshire based Mercian League, which brought about mixed fortunes, initially struggling for players, management and results. However, with a succession of die-hard senior players taking the reins; Gavin Brocklehurst,

Whitchurch Alport Phil Denson and Richard O’Keefe, things moved forward with better performances and improved results, elevating the Club to the higher reaches of the league. The Club saw an opportunity to apply to join the North West Counties Football League and set about improving their facilities, ground and playing staff, in order to meet the step 6 league requirements. With much appreciated guidance from the NWCFL, with much hard work, the Club achieved the requirements and were proposed by the NWCFL to the English FA League’s committee to be new members of their League. Originally, their application to join NWCFL was declined but an appeal was successfully heard at Wembley Stadium - with the FA’s appeals committee overturning the original decision. There was much hard work ahead to make the dreams become reality though. The ground had to be brought up to NWCFL regulations, not to mention being able to field a team to be able to compete at Step 6. But in August 2015, Whitchurch finally stepped onto the field to compete at the highest level in their history, earning a 1-1 home draw with Rochdale Town in front of a crowd of 83, with Luke Woollam becoming the first player to score for the club as a NWCFL outfit. Initially, the Reds began brightly, losing only five of their first 15 league games. But a harsh winter saw interest wane and many of the better players decided they’d had enough. Alport limped over the line simply to complete their league fixtures, but a miserly 16 points from 34 league matches told its own story. Despite the sterling work of stand-in boss Tony Ennion, who presided over the last few months of the season, the committee felt fresh blood was needed, and on May 27th 2016, they unveiled a joint management team of Luke Goddard and Carl Everall. They set about assembling a brand new youthful and energetic team, whilst appointing experienced coaching staff in order to help turn around the club’s fortunes after the harshest inaugural season imaginable. On September 10th, the club competed in the FA Vase for the first time - losing narrowly after extra time at home to Wellington FC - and then, on November 15th 2016, the club record attendance at Yockings Park was smashed when an incredible 634 spectators watched a midweek league clash against City of Liverpool. Chairman’s Notes Good evening and a very warm welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League First Division game with visitors Whitchurch Alport. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own followers have had a safe journey here and are treated to an entertaining encounter. Many thanks to tonight’s match sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who are also our main club sponsors and this evening’s match ball sponsors The Track King - your continued support is much appreciated. We welcome promotion chasing Whitchurch Alport this evening and I am sure they will be desperate to claim the three points as they bid to match the midweek results of their rivals. It is becoming increasingly difficult to pick out both the automatic and play-off clubs with any of the current top 8 clubs in the hunt! The schedule of games over the next three weeks or so as well as the numerous clashes between the top teams will see a number of twists and turns before the dust settles on the campaign.
The return fixture took place at Yockings Park just before Christmas and the Reds ran out convincing 3-0 winners on an afternoon when the fog looked as if it had come to Town’s rescue during the second half and despite a 10 minute break the game finished with poor visibility (to say the least)! I reported last week that the work as Ruskin Drive Sport Ground is progressing well and some of the dressing room structure is now appearing after a long period of ground works! This week has also seen the delivery of the new hospitality room. There’s till quite a bit of work to complete including a reduction (in height) of the pitch perimeter fence at a number of places around the stadium. I am on the look out for a match (£100) and ball (£50) sponsor for the City of Liverpool fixture on Good Friday 14th April, 3pm. It’s should be a bumper crowd and it coincides with the opening day of the Prescot Cables Beer Festival! If you’re interested give me a call on 07713 339 682 or see me at today’s game. Saturday afternoon sees us travel to neighbours Widnes who continued their fine form which has seen them ensconced in the chase for on of the two automatic promotion places. The run of fixtures continues next Tuesday when we travel to Chadderton before hosting City of Liverpool on Good Friday. Enjoy this evening’s game and hopefully the lads can collect three points. Ruskin Drive News More disappointment as the wait continues for Town's return to St Helens. Club officials met with the Council last Friday (3rd February) and it has now been confirmed that the work required to meet the FA Ground Grading will not be completed until mid-May 2017. While the ground is currently being used by the club’s U18s, U21s and Sunday teams the prolonged delays to the completion of the new dressing room facilities and a problem with the height of the pitch perimeter fence have left the club frustrated that the first team will have an extended wait to make a return home. The delay will mean a number of issues for Town including the need to secure alternative playing facilities for next season to ensure they do not fall foul of the FA and NWCFL ground requirements. As the Ruskin Drive Sports ground will not be in a position to be inspected by the 31st March deadline the club needs to have a ground sharing agreement in place at a suitable alternative ground to maintain their membership of the league and guarantee entry to FA competitions. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘The news is very disappointing and a real blow to our plans. We’ve relied on the good will and support of a number of clubs over the past six years and are indebted to those clubs in ensuring the survival of the club – their assistance should not be underestimated.’
He added, ‘If we accept that the new ground will be ready in May the reality is that we will never need to utilise any ground sharing agreement but it still has to be in place or we could be in serious trouble.’ The club will also lose out on a lucrative fixture as part of the NWCFL Easter weekend Ground Hop. Town were due to host promotion chasing City of Liverpool at Ruskin Drive as the second of three Ground Hop fixtures in the area on Easter Sunday which would have seen up to 300 ‘hoppers’ part of a likely four-figure crowd. Mr McKiernan added, ‘We had expected to be on the new ground some time earlier this season but delays have shifted from weeks to months. The loss of the Ground Hop fixture is both hugely disappointing and financially disastrous, losing the club thousands of pounds. ‘Given our opposition the City of Liverpool FC, who are very well supported, hundreds of ground hoppers and a lot of local interest this was guaranteed to be bumper crowd and an ideal way to showcase the club and the new Ruskin Drive Sports Ground facility. ‘Unfortunately, we had no other option but to inform the league that we would not be able to participate in the Ground Hop programme.’

Match Report Quickfire Rigby double puts paid to Stockport Town
Two goals in three minutes early in the second half by Ste Rigby gave St. Helens Town a deserved 2-0 win over Stockport Town. by Glyn Jones Two goals in three minutes early in the second half by Ste Rigby gave St. Helens Town a deserved 2-0 win over Stockport Town in a feisty encounter at Volair Park on Thursday evening. To quote a muchused football phrase, it was a “game of two halves”, the first 45 minutes being as dull as dishwater, producing only one chance of note, Joel Douglas’s goal-bound header hitting two defenders at point-blank range after 20 minutes. The second half was totally different, mainly due to Stockport’s sense of injustice surrounding the award of a free-kick which led indirectly to Rigby’s opening goal. The players had barely emerged for the second half when a challenge on the half-way line saw a Stockport player go in hard for the ball with Alex Gillespie. The force of the challenge on the ball knocked Gillespie off his feet and the referee, some distance away, awarded the home side a freekick. The ball was moved quickly upfield and found Rigby (pictured below) unmarked. His superb chest down and shot with his right foot left the visiting ‘keeper Dan Whiting looking over his shoulder as the ball dropped into the net and Town were 1-0 up inside 52 minutes. The reaction on the Stockport bench was one of disbelief. Recently appointed manager Dave Wild, still smarting from the award of the free-kick, reacted angrily, but worse was to come. His side, unbeaten since January and with an outside chance of the promotion playoff places, suddenly found themselves two goals down, as Rigby again found the net, as he lobbed Whiting from just outside the box out three minutes later. Two goals up, St. Helens have a fine record of their own this year and though Stockport shut up shop at the back after the second goal went in, Town were in no mood to surrender their own clean sheet and the remaining 35 minutes turned into a pulsating 35 minutes of midfield battle, with neither side giving an inch. There was an unfortunate undercurrent of anger, at times, which resulted in a brief incident which involved a number of players from both sides running in, but order was quickly restored. However, Stockport player Aaron Dwyer did receive his marching orders near the end for a second yellow card after a reckless challenge. Some ugly scenes followed the final whistle as tempers flared among the Stockport players and coaching staff and the teams had to leave the field separately, with the officials sandwiched in the middle, so keenly had this contest been fought. In fact, St. Helens now find themselves three points behind Stockport with a game in hand and the two teams are yet to meet at Lambeth Grove on 22nd April. It promises to be quite a game! A Tribute to ERIC BOND – A GIANT OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL by Glyn Jones PART 1 Eric Bond was not a big man in a physical sense, but he was a giant in nonleague football in Haydock, St. Helens, Liverpool and Merseyside football for over 60 years. As a player, he turned out for Prescot Grammar School (although not a pupil there) and was selected at outside left for the Liverpool County FA Youth side which went all the way to the Final of the FA Youth Competition, only to lose out to Sussex over two legs in 1952, in games played at Goodison Park and the Goldstone Ground, Brighton.
The same season, he played in home and away games against Eire (Republic of Ireland) at Everton and at Dalymount Park, Dublin and was a member of the Liverpool Colts team which took on the successful LBA Continental Touring XI team at Anfield on 23rd April. Eric was born in 1934 and it could be said he was born into football, being brought up in the “C & B” House in Haydock, the house attached to the Haydock Cricket and Bowls Club, the football section of which he proudly joined as mascot as a 9-year-old in the 1943-44 season. As soon as he could play, he had a ball at his feet, spending his weekends and school holidays and any other spare time running up and down on the pitches outside his home. He also played football at school, even changing schools to get a game in the team. He began as a 13-year-old at St. Mark’s, playing in the 16-18 age group league. When he was 14, he moved to Haydock C & B, playing in the 14-16 age group. At the age of 15, he was playing Open Age football for C & B, in the Liverpool County Combination. He came to Everton’s notice in 1948/49 season and signed amateur forms whilst a schoolboy at Ashton Grammar School, playing with Everton Colts, but on returning to Haydock, he switched

Eric Bond allegiance and signed for Liverpool, turning out for their “A” team and Reserves. However, a serious ankle injury dented his confidence and he began playing for Crompton’s Recs. in the Lancashire Combination, where he stayed between March and October 1953, when he signed for Earlestown. Tragedy struck in his early Earlestown career, however, after Eric had scored his side’s fifth goal in a game against Prescot Cables Reserves, his father Harry, who had gone along to watch his son, collapsed whilst waiting outside the dressing rooms and died later in hospital at Warrington. Eric later had trials with Doncaster Rovers, playing for the first time under floodlights for their reserve side in a Midland League game against Peterborough United in their pre-Football League days.
Eric had a trial for St. Helens Town in September 1951, playing a couple of games as a young lad, making his debut as a 17year-old, stepping on for Albert Leadbetter, on the left wing. It obviously made a lasting impression on him as, despite serving Earlestown for over 10 years, he made an emotional return to Hoghton Road in 1963, prompting the local newspaper headline: “Town get their man at last!” He fitted in well alongside some of Town’s best forwards of the time, including Johnny Diggle, Ray Fairweather and record goal scorer Phil Stainton, who netted 47 goals in the 1963/64 season. Bond himself played 15 times in what remained of that season, scoring three goals, all three coming in a 4-3 Lancashire Junior Cup Replay defeat to Lancaster City, in which he played the match of his life for St. Helens Town.

A Brief History The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged Tommy O’Neil over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record Wembley,1987 attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An alltime club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April

of St Helens Town
St Helens Town 1948 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent mid-season form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early -season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30 th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

League News A good day in the end for Bacup Borough Although it got off to a bad start, Saturday eventually turned out well for everyone at Bacup Borough, who celebrated their first home win since September with a 2-1 victory over Stockport Town. The omens were not good when a faulty oven deprived the home supporters of the opportunity to enjoy Debra's potato pie at the tea bar - a must for anyone who visits the Brian Boys West View Stadium - but the absence of the usual pre-match warm up meal was forgotten when second half goals from James Constantine and Adrian Bellamy secured the points for Brent Peters' men.
With seven home games to play during April, and a new oven in place, there will be plenty to enjoy on and off the pitch for those who make the trip up the hill to Cowtoot Lane in the coming weeks. Thurs, 27th July, 2017 11am at Haydock Library, Church Road, Haydock WA11 0LY A talk by Glyn Jones of St. Helens Town Football Club on The Old Football Grounds of St. Helens Town and Haydock C & B illustrated by resource materials and memorabilia. Vice-Chairman and Club Historian will deliver a talk on the former football grounds of the St. Helens Town clubs at Park Road (19011928) and Hoghton Road, Sutton (19472000), also the old Station Road ground used by the former Haydock Cricket & Bowls Football Club, using materials supplied by the St. Helens Council’s Libraries section, also the St. Helens Town Football Club and the family of the late Eric Bond. Match Report v Town Not Fooling Around as LR Comfortably Beaten By Kieran Ford After a 3-1 home defeat by in form Chadderton, St Helens Town were looking to get back to winning ways to gain some momentum for their end of season run in. With a mid table position secured already, Alan Gillespie, Lee Jenkinson and Nick Robinson will be looking to develop the squad ready for the challenge of next season.
Against an LR side that were still not safe from relegation and had lost their previous 4, although these were all by a one goal margin, Town started strong. The hosts immediately looked like a threat from out wide and an Andy Presho cross was meant with a glancing header from Ste Rigby but he was unable to net his 7th goal in 9 games. Presho was again involved, this time the opening goal a quarter of an hour in. His deep free kick from the left was met by Liam Dodd who towered above LR captain Kieran Halliwell and nodded in his 3rd of the season to put the hosts into the lead. Dodd impressed throughout the first half, using his physicality in order to brush off Atherton attackers whilst being competent to drive forward with the ball. Presho also drove forward from the back, but his long-range shot was comfortably saved by the goalkeeper.

Atherton LR Atherton also had chances in the first half, a neat exchange between Theodore Kidd and Adam Owens resulted in an Owens attempt was blocked by Liam Dodd but the resulting corner came to nothing. A long range free-kick from St Helens captain Andy Gillespie was easily met by Atherton keeper Daniel Haven. However, minutes later, a call of “Go on Andy have a crack!” from the stands was duly obliged by Gillespie who hit a sweet strike into the net from fully 30 yards, as he got his first goal after a 6-week absence. HT: St Helens Town (Dodd, 15) (Andy Gillespie, 40) 2-0 Atherton LR
The visitors started brightly after the restart as they looked to find a way back into the game. Right midfielder Edmund Walker supplied a teasing cross but Theodore Kidd couldn’t get on the end of it. The Atherton substitute Beck Murray looked lively as he came on at half time, he plucked a high ball out of the air and was left with space outside the area but hit a tame half volley at Adam Fairchild in the St Helens Town net. After riding this period of pressure, Town came back into the match and again started to create chances, probing the LR defence. These included an attempt from Anthony Dunleavy who dragged his shot wide, and several from goalscorer Gillespie who could not find the target. Gillespie had an effort that was to play a big part in Town securing the 3 points with an attempt on goal that was blocked into the path of Dale Korie -Butler. The Town number 10 steadied himself, before hitting a powerful effort into the left-hand corner to secure the Blues a comfortable win. FT: St Helens Town (Dodd, 15) (Andy Gillespie, 40) (Korie-Butler, 81) 3-0 Atherton LR That win put’s Town in 12th place, as their season is now over in terms of promotion or relegation, they can start building for next season. However, they can still have a big say in who goes up from the division, starting on Thursday night at Volair Park as they host title chasing Whitchurch Alport before travelling to the Select Security Stadium to play Widnes who are in the play offs on Saturday.

Match Report v SLICK CHADDERTON JUST TOO GOOD FOR TOWN St. Helens Town 1, Chadderton 3 by Glyn Jones St. Helens Town staged their now customary late Thursday night comeback against inform Chadderton at Volair Park, but this time they had given themselves far too much to do and the visitors from Oldham ran out comfortable 3 -1 winners. The sides had already met at Prescot back in September when Chadderton fought back from 2-0 down to dump Town out of the FA Vase by 5 goals to 3 in a game which was best remembered for a series of defensive blunders by the home side, but this Chadderton side arrived on the back of a run of 7 wins from the last 10 games and lost no time setting about showing their attacking prowess, establishing a two-goal lead with two great strikes in the first half hour, which caught Town cold. The first goal came after 15 minutes, Sam Gibson giving Adam Fairchild no chance in the Town goal after a quickfire move which left the St. Helens defence flat-footed. The second Chadderton strike was even better, Luke Heron finding back-spin on a ball which everyone appeared to think looked bound to cross the by-line for a harmless goal-kick, then blasting the spinning ball past Fairchild to double his side’s lead. Almost immediately from the re-start, Joel Douglas, who had toiled hard throughout the half without any success, was unfortunate to see his shot land on the top of the Chadderton net with keeper Michael Smith beaten. Town did regain some ground in the remaining 15 minutes of the first-half, but the visitors’ defence looked virtually impregnable until, right on the whistle, Luke Edwards unleashed a spectacular drive which rattled the left- hand post. The second period was a really good contest and, as time wore on, developed into an absorbing end-to-end game. There was an intriguing individual duel between Ste Rigby, who has been on fire recently and Chadderton full-back Gareth Hill, who was solid for the first hour or so. Rigby then began to get the better
Celebrating 70 years, 1946-2016

Chadderton of him up the left flank and launched a series of raids, one of which very nearly produced a goal, Smith acrobatically tipping over a wellplaced shot. Three substitutes were introduced by Alan Gillespie to try to inject some pace, just as Chadderton were seemingly beginning to exhibit a few cracks: Andy Webster, fresh from becoming a father replaced Dom Whelan, Anthony Dunleavy took over from Adam Donohue and Warren Twist came on for Edwards and the big push was on. Rigby and Douglas began to find gaps and surely it was just a matter of time… Then, calamity. A stray pass found Leon Iluobe, Town’s nemesis from last season – he who, single-handedly, put St. Helens out of the First Division Trophy in extra-time at Andrew Street. He slipped the ball to Vincent Howell who rounded Fairchild and netted easily to put the visitors home and dry with nine minutes left. Town did rally. After all, it was Thursday. Rigby went very close,
then Eddie Pegler was twice denied then, when all hope seemed lost, in the 90th minute, Douglas slammed the ball home to make it 1-3. There was still time for the same player to be held down by the shoulders in the penalty box, but the referee waved away the Town players’ claims and soon afterwards, the final whistle blew. It was just about the right result, but with a little more application in the first half and without that horrible mistake in the 81st minute, things might have turned out so differently. The teams meet again at Andrew Street on Tuesday, 11th April but, in between times, Town face Atherton L.R. a week on Saturday, 1st April at Prescot, then Whitchurch Alport, at home again, on Thursday, 6th April and Widnes away on Saturday, 8th April. Promotion may be a step (or three) too far for this season, but there are yet many enjoyable games to come and the higher up the table Town finish, the better are their chances of taking part in next season’s FA Cup Qualifying rounds, so there is still much to play for.

Manager’s Notes Good evening and welcome everybody to tonight's game v Whitchurch Alport. Our opposition are right in the mix at the top of the table and will be going full out for three points tonight so I'm expecting another great Thursday night game. Whitchurch have come a long way since their 10-0 defeat last season at the hands of Town and easily brushed a weakened pre-Xmas Town aside 3-0 in our previous meeting this season. We didn't really turn up that day and were never in the game with a looming fog offering our best hope as Whitchurch went top of the table. It goes without saying we will be aiming to give a better account of ourselves this evening. I thought we played reasonably well in our last game against Atherton LR without really ever getting out of 2nd gear. The goals were pleasing. The first a great free kick delivery and a close range header from one of our outstanding players of the game and recent weeks Liam Dodd. Liam has settled in at centre back and looks the real deal. The second was a great strike from Andy back in the side after a 3 game ban which kept him out for 6 weeks. Similarly, Dale was back from suspension and he completed the scoring with our third goal with ten minutes remaining. A clean sheet was another positive after conceding three in our previous game against Chadderton. I think we have the beginnings of a good squad here now and if we can keep it together during the close season keep working hard in training and improve in a few areas then just maybe we can push and compete with the big money outfits in this division. Make no mistake this will be difficult as this division has transformed itself since last season and I think it will be even stronger next season. For me next season started last Saturday and with a very difficult April which will test our character and resources to the limit and give us a clue as to how close this squad actually is to the top sides. We must continue to aim for improvement in all areas of our game Fitness Technical Commitment Attitude Discipline if we hope to achieve our aspirations. Enjoy the game Alan

League News High five for Sebastian There's little doubt about the individual performance of the week - Sebastian Julien's five goals for Nelson in the 5-1 win at AFC Liverpool on Wednesday. It's also fair to say that it's a performance that no one saw coming, given that Sebastian had played five games previously for the Admirals and not scored in any of them, but he certainly made up lost ground on his goals per game ratio with his incredible goalscoring display. Five goals in a game from one player is not a common occurrence - the last time it happened was a year ago last weekend, when Matty Beadle scored five for 1874 Northwich at Padiham in a 7-0 win - so well done to Sebastian for a memorable night's work that will live long in the memory for those who witnessed it. Linnets keep up the pressure When you are in the promotion pack and looking to keep up with the teams at the top, all you can ask for is that you win your games, and take points off the teams around you when the opportunity arises.
So you can't fault the fighting spirit of Runcorn Linnets, whose win at Atherton Collieries on Saturday was their sixth in succession, and completed a remarkable hat trick of away wins in the space of three weeks against three of their fellow promotion contenders - 1874 Northwich, Bootle and now Colls. It might prove to be that Linnets' run of form has arrived just a little too late, but you certainly can't fault their determination and will to win. Seven up for Alport One of the most remarkable games of the week took place at New Sirs, where it looked like Whitchurch Alport's promotion hopes were going to take a serious blow after they fell three goals behind to Daisy Hill after just 18 minutes. But by half time a comeback had already been completed, with two goals apiece from Mike Blundell and Simon Everall in an 11 minute period before half time giving Alport a 4-3 lead, and victory was completed late on with two goals from Matthew Ashbrook and one from Elliot Edwards rounding off a 7-3 win - the 11th time in league history that a team has won by that score in an away game. The ability to overcome adversity is a vital ingredient for any team going for promotion, and no one can doubt the quality of Alport's bouncebackability after that display. Late late show from Barlick Another team who showed during the week that they can't be written off until the final whistle blows are Barnoldswick Town, who staged two impressive comebacks in both of their games. Barlick were three goals down after 28 minutes in the game at West Didsbury & Chorlton, a score that remained in place until after the hour mark when the Barlick revival began. A penalty from Andrew Hill, a second goal from Gareth Hargreaves 15 minutes from time and then an 85th minute equaliser from Aaron Hollindrake rescued a point for Barlick, and then on Saturday they staged another late comeback, with goals from Mark Threlfall and Andrew Hill in the final nine minutes securing a 2-1 win over Hanley Town. Advice for anyone going to a Barlick game - don't leave early, you might miss something.

League News Padiham manager Steve Wilkes celebrated his 900th competitive game as a manager on Saturday, when he took charge of the Storks for the game against New Mills at the YESSS Electrical Arena. It turned out to be a good day for Steve, who was presented with a glass plaque by the club before the game to commemorate the milestone, and then watched on as his son Zack scored his first goal for Padiham since joining the club, the third goal in the Storks’ 4-2 win. It was the latest highlight in a managerial career that has now spanned 20 years for Steve, but if it hadn't been for some words of encouragement from former England manager Sam Allardyce, he might never have taken his first steps into management. As a player, Steve began his career as a professional at Wigan Athletic before moving to Preston North End, and he then dropped into nonleague football after suffering a series of injuries. The opportunity to take his first step into management came at the age of 29, when he was playing at Darwen. "I joined Darwen in 1997 and was captain, and then manager Ian McGarry was sacked at the end of the season", said Steve. “The Chairman at the time, Kath Marah, asked me if I wanted the job and at first I said ‘no’ because I was only 29 and wasn't sure if it was for me. I had never contemplated going into management, it was never on my radar at all, so I spoke to Sam Allardyce, who I was friendly with as we had played together at Preston, and also to Roy Tunks who was the goalkeeper when I was there, and later became assistant manager at Wigan Athletic. "They were the first people that I rang for advice and they both said the same - give it a try, if you don't like it and aren't cut out for it, you will know within about 6 weeks. When I was offered the job at Darwen, the reason I wasn't sure about it was because - and people who read this might not believe it I was a very shy lad. I couldn't speak in public, I couldn't stand in front of people and talk. For the first twelve months or so I was at Darwen, I used to have a script. I used to sit at work on a Saturday morning writing down what I would say to the players in the dressing room that afternoon. But you eventually get experience and confidence, and now here I am 20 years later". From those early days, Steve spent seven years as Darwen player/manager, before moving to Padiham, then had spells at Runcorn Linnets and Ashton Athletic before moving back to Padiham in 2013. "When I moved to Padiham the first time, Secretary Alan Smith said that they had brought me in as a manager not as a player. I was 36 at the time so it was probably time to finish anyway, I was beginning to creak a bit when I got up in the morning after games. I should probably never have left Padiham in the first place, but the chance to manage at Runcorn Linnets, who were in a higher division at the time, was a lure for me. Then I had a fantastic 12 months at Ashton Athletic, which is a brilliant club with brilliant people. "But when the Padiham job came up again, I felt I had a job to do there, and I brought in Steve Cunningham and Danny Craig as my management team and we all clicked. We won the league in my first season back, and that has definitely been the highlight of my career". The milestone of 900 games was something that Steve has had his eye on for some time, but since the news broke in the run up to Saturday's game, he admits he has been greatly touched by the messages of support he has received.
"It all started when someone asked me last season how many games I'd managed, and to be honest I had never thought about it. So I spoke to Paul Cowburn, the League Statistician, and he helped me work out how many North West Counties games I had been involved in up to then."
