Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Squires Gate. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been just under a week since we were here taking on Northern Counties East League, Premier Division side Nostell Miners Welfare in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Challenge Vase. After an early scare when Jamie Allsop drew a fine close range reflex save from Rory Crowther in the Town goal the rest of the first half was fully of dominance for the hosts and a flurry of chances were created by St Helens. Karl Bergqvist beat the visiting stopper to a ball but his lobbed effort landed on the roof of the net and soon afterwards Paul Cook-Hannah has an effort saved by Ben Saynor in the Nostell goal and likewise Bergqvist who was released by a well -weighted through ball but he shot at the keeper when he should have done better. The real surprise of the first half was that it took the hosts as long as it did for them to open the scoring, the breakthrough came in the 45th minute of the contest when skipper Andy Gillespie found some space in the Nostell box and showed his killer instinct to power the ball home past the helpless Saynor. The second half was a much more even affair but the visitors in all reality served very little notice of intent on the Town goal and Crowther will not have many quieter afternoon’s this season. The result of the contest was put beyond doubt in the 76th minute when a Town foray forward culminated in an effort from Chad Whyte being blocked and the rebound was volleyed home by Bergqvist to send Town into the hat for the first round draw for the first time since 2012. Monday mornings draw saw us given a home tie against NCEL, Division One outfit Yorkshire Amateur. Non_League Yorkshire’s James Grayson who came to the game with Nostell obviously didn’t think much of our performance on the day as he commented on the draw that our opponents “...have an excellent chance of progression when they head to St Helens Town.” This afternoon’s visitors have had a great start to the season and look to have put the last couple of seasons relegation form behind them as they had an excellent run in the FA Cup and come into the contest with 16 points on the board in the league. They have been somewhat a surprise package in the early stages and have recorded league wins over Nelson, Maine Road, Alsager & in a humdinger at Bacup a fortnight ago when they came back from 2-0 & 3-1 behind to record a 4-3 win. I would suggest there may be a few goals in this afternoons contest! Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory you support is vital to the cause! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today The club was originally formed as Squires Gate British Legion F.C. in 1948 and played in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. In Coronation year, 1953 the club changed its name to Squires Gate F.C. and won its first honour in the leagues Rawling Sheild. In the years that followed, the ‘Gate’ added to their silverware by securing the Division One title twice in 1956/56 and 1957/58 and also the Blackwell Cup in 1958/59 and 1959/60. The club joined the Flyde District League for one season only in 1960/61, winning the Flyde Cup and reaching the final of the Bannister Cup. In 1961 they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they played for 30 years. They were promoted from The West Lancashire League Division 2 as the Champions in 1981, but apart from that title win the Division 1 Richardson Cup win in 1986/87 was the clubs only major honour of that period. The club won the Division Two title again in 1987/88 and gained promotion back to the Leagues top flight. Squires Gate’s home ground School Lane adjoins former North West Counties outfit Blackpool Wren Rovers home Bruce Park. The two grounds were fashioned out of a corporate waste tip in the late 1950’s. Leased to the clubs in 1961, originally the clubs played on two adjacent pitches with nothing more than a rope separating them. Over the years the two grounds were segregated and developed into two North West Counties League standard grounds.

The club have made steady progress since being elected to they North West Counties League Division Two for the 1991/92 season. The club ended that first season in 14th place after struggling to adapt to the step up in standard. The club won the NWCFL Fair Play award for the 1993/94 season and were losing finalists in the Division Two Trophy in 1997/98. Gate struggled at the wrong end of the second division for some years before a they just missed out on promotion with a third placed finish in the 1998-99 season. The club now boasts a licensed clubhouse and three seated stands. The millennium was celebrated with the erection of floodlights and the completion of the largest stand. They won the Division Two Trophy in 2001/2 beating Bacup Borough in an exciting final and won promotion to the First Division the season after finishing 3rd in the table and accepting the promotion place left vacant by Stand Athletic who withdrew from the league. Their first season in the top flight saw them finish in a very respectable12th position. 2005/6 saw the club finish in 14th position but it was their FA Vase exploits that the Gate fans will remind you of as they advanced from the 1st qualifying round al the way to the Quarter Finals where they went down 2-0 to Hillingdon Borough who were eventual beaten finalists. 2006/7 saw Gate have a mixed for start and manager Stuart Parker was sacked after an 8-0 defeat by FC United and former manager Jed Starkey has returned to take up the reigns. The club finished the season in 18th position.

Andy Clarkson took up the reigns for the start of 2007/8 season and Gate reaping the rewards of his stewardship as they finished in 6th position their highest ever league position in his first term in charge of the club. In recent years, Gate's real achievements have been in developing the Club itself. Some of the former players who moved to School Road in 1960 are still around, working in various capacities, most notably Brian Addison, who has progressed from player to Linesman, to Secretary, to Chairman, and

Squires Gate eventually to the most important job of all: groundsman. Once the pitch had been relaid some ten years ago, Brian has gradually turned the pitch into one of the best in the League, and with the opening of the new changing rooms a couple of years later (named after one of the Club's great stalwarts, Wilf Carr,) the ground has become unrecognisable since those early days. The complete refurbishment of the Clubhouse in 2006, with air-conditioning added the following year, and now the upgrading of the floodlights, means that Squires Gate can be rightly proud of what they have created since those far-off days playing on "the tip". 2008/9 saw the coast outfit finish in a very respectable 10th position but Clarkson left the club at the end of the season to take up a position in the AFC Fylde coaching staff. Gate appointed Russ McKenna to the hot-seat with Mark Moretti as his assistant for the 2009/10 season. The new duo did a good job of consolidating the clubs position within the Premier Division as they steered the club to a 13th placed finish. 2010/11 saw the club build on that finish as Gate were one of the surprise packages in the Premier Division finishing in 9th. The 2011/12 season saw Squires Gate win almost as many league games including 6-1 & 5-3 victories over Town and completed a treble with a 1-0 FA Vase win too but fell down the table and finished the season in a disappointing 17th position their lowest position since 2006/07. Dave McCann was appointed manager towards the end of the 2012/13 season and has ensured Premier Division survival since taking charge. He is assisted by Richard Thomas and Mark Shaw. The 2012-13 season saw Gate finish in 21st position but survive due to the league not receiving a club from above and last term a final day victory at Abbey Hey saw them rise out of the relegation zone at the 11th hour to provide a 13th consecutive season in the top flight of the North West Counties League.

From the Chair Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Squire Gate FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. With no midweek fixture for either team the teams arrive off the back of mixed results last weekend with today’s visitors going down 32 at Glossop North End having taken a 0-2 first half lead. For Town it was the novelty of a Sunday afternoon game which saw us make FA Vase progress at the expense of our visitors Nostell Miners Welfare. Our reward for the win, as well as the £800 prize money, is another home tie which sees Leeds based Yorkshire Amateur FC visit Brocstedes Park on Saturday 1st November, kick off 3pm. Congratulations to Jack McKay who was chosen by last Sunday’s match sponsor Rylance Family Fishmongers as the Man of the Match. Jack and Colin Rylance are pictured below. There’s plenty of league business between now and then with today’s visit by Gate the third successive home game and I am sure Ian Price and the players will be hoping to build upon last weekend’s performance. Next Saturday we travel to Congleton Town before a midweek away trip to AFC Blackpool (Tuesday 21st October). We are then in League Challenge Cup action when we take on Widnes FC in the 2nd Round at the Select Security Stadium on Saturday 25th October, kick off 3.00pm. Hopefully, a ‘first time’ local derby will encourage a few more supporters to make the short trip to Widnes. On the sponsorship front we welcome two new player sponsors with Evolution Recruitment Solutions and Forster Dean Solicitors who will be sponsoring Ryan Duffy and Jack McKay respectively many thanks. We still have player sponsorship available, as well as match and match ball packages - sponsorship starts from just £50 all season. I can be contacted in 07713 339 682 for more details. Congratulations to our U21s side who made progress in the Cheshire FA U21s League Cup last weekend, winning 2-3 at Silverdale Athletic. The U17s, U18s and U21s are all in action tomorrow (Sun 12th) - fixture details are elsewhere in today’s match programme. Please try to give them your support. Enjoy the game and hopefully I will see a few of you at Congleton Town next Saturday. John McKiernan Chairman St Helens Town AFC

NWCFL News A selection of quotes from the winning camps after the weekend's FA Vase ties.

Buckley.

Daisy Hill 5 Albion Sports 4 Daisy Hill manager Craig Thomas: “It was a bizarre day. Our goalie got stretchered off and with no spare keeper on the bench our centre back had to go in. At 2-1 to us, our other centre back got sent off for a last man challenge, but we got to 4-2 ahead with two great goals, a Craig Naylor 40 yard chip and a 30 yarder from Andrew

“We tired with just having 10 men and they got it back to 4-4, but this team is never dead and with the last kick of the game Scott Winstanley sent a diving header into the net on 95 minutes, just as a rainbow appeared above the net”. Hallam 1 Ashton Town 3 Ashton Town Chairman Mark Hayes: "We were unlucky to be losing at half time, and not one of us could envisage going home on the coach after a defeat. The lads dug in hard and got a well deserved victory. We are now in the hat for the First Round Proper for the first time in the club’s history, which means a hell of a lot. West Didsbury & Chorlton 2 Rossington Main 1 West Didsbury & Chorlton manager Andy Nelson: “We’re delighted to be through to the next round. It was one of those games where we didn’t play as well as we can but won, in contrast to several home games this season when we’ve played very well but not got the result. “However, we’ve recovered from a difficult time in August to put together a good series of results in recent weeks, and we now need to maintain that momentum”.

won it in 90 minutes with the chances we had.

Atherton Colls 4 AFC Liverpool 1 (aet)) Colls manager Michael Clegg: "We struggled with Liverpool early doors and took the lead against the run of play. They deservedly equalised and it was an even first half then. After half time we were dominant, some fantastic football played and we should have

“In extra time we were dominant again and our fitness shone through. We’re delighted to go through and we wish Liverpool all the best. They play the right way”. Chadderton 3 Abbey Hey 1 Chadderton manager Steve Patterson : “It was a great win for the club and I am very proud of my players. They were excellent from start to finish and played very well against a good Abbey Hey side. “We have had a tough few weeks but the players have stayed positive and worked hard to put it right. We hope to use this as a springboard to improve our league form now. It was great to see big smiles on the faces of all the people who work so hard behind the scenes, and this win was for them”.

NWCFL News Runcorn Town will look to achieve another milestone in the club's history when they host Norton United in the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round at the Pavilions on Saturday.

the last round.

Already in uncharted territory as far as their FA Cup history is concerned, Simon Burton's side will aim to take another step closer to a tie with a big name club, after capturing the national headlines with their eye-catching 1-0 win at Barrow in

As the only NWCFL side left in the competition, the draw could hardly have provided more familiar opponents for Town, with last season's Premier Division champions Norton United making the trip up from the Potteries for the first time since they grabbed an important win at the Pavilions in March, as the promotion race began to hot up. On that occasion Paul Shanley gave Town a half time lead, but two goals in seven second half minutes from Leigh Skellern and Jon Beaumont earned an important win for Norton, and one which ensured they were one of the few clubs to complete a league double over Runcorn Town last season. In August, Norton won 4-1 thanks to goals from Tom Fogg, Lee Talbot, Lee Cropper and Dan Brown against a solitary strike from Jason Carey, and the afore mentioned six players who all found the back of the net against Town last season are all still very much involved in Scott Dundas's squad for this campaign. Norton have warmed up for the game with two league wins, achieved while scoring eight goals in the process. They followed up a convincing 5-1 win over Coalville Town at home last Saturday with a 3-2 win at Romulus on Monday night. The wins moved Norton to a respectable 10th place in the EvoStik Division One South, with five wins and five defeats from ten games, and with the majority of the squad from recent NWCFL campaigns still at the club, there will be no shortage of familiar faces, both on and off the field, among the visitors on Saturday. Runcorn Town manager Simon Burton believes that the scene is set for a memorable afternoon at the Pavilions. "Saturday represents a historic day for the club as it's the first time we have ever made it this far in the FA Cup", he said. "Although we will be going in to the game as underdogs, which we have all the way through the competition, we have a fantastic opportunity to progress. "We have quite a good insight into what Norton are about, having played them twice last season. But they also have the same luxury, so there's no real advantage for either side. "The lads are chomping at the bit and I know motivation won't be an issue going in to the game, but you always need that bit of luck. "I'm hoping that the FA Cup works it's magic again on Saturday, and sees another underdog progress to the next round".

Town Managers Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987Combination Championship Trophy 92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the from Wesley Bridge in 1972 mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

Match Report Town slip to Liverpool Senior Cup exit Tuesday 30th September 2014 Burscough 4-1 St Helens Town St. Helens Town faced a tough draw in the First Round of the Liverpool Senior Cup when they were paired with Evo Stik North 1 side Burscough at Victoria Park and they duly crashed out 4-1 in the game on Tuesday. Burscough are a well-organised, efficient side, who give nothing away, yet Town started well and appeared to have most of the attacking play in the opening quarter, Paul Cook-Hannah having the only early chance, but his header sailed over the home bar after 18 minutes. Karl Bergqvist was a real livewire and caused the Burscough defence plenty of problems, as did James Rushton-Woods, but the home side took the lead on 28 minutes when, following a short corner, captain Paul Williams launched a curving shot from a tight, wide position and the ball fizzed past Rory Crowther for the opening goal. Dominic Whelan came in at right back for his full debut and the youngster showed good promise. Jamil Saleh made his seasonal full debut, but was out of luck on 39 minutes when Anthony Brown cleaned him out with a brutal challenge which escaped punishment and, from the resulting long ball, Will Jones scored with a header, albeit seemingly from an offside position. Neither the referee nor the linesman was up with play and, despite a reasoned protest from Hamish Falconer, referee Ben Speedie took time out to explain his decision and the goal was allowed to stand. 2-0 down at half-time, Town looked distinctly second best in the second half and the only efforts of note were a strong header from the returning Nathan Ogden and three free kicks, struck sweetly by Rushton-Woods, all of which went straight into keeper Dean Pye’s hands. Will Jones scored his second goal on 59 minutes, following a break from the other end of the field and Mark Beesley netted a fourth for Burscough with ten minutes remaining. The introduction of substitutes Andy Gillespie, Chad Whyte and Tom Lightbody, who was returning to the side following a painful toe injury, gave some renewed impetus and Whyte had the satisfaction of scoring with a penalty in the last move of the game, following a double foul on the same player. Consolation it might have been, but this was Town’s first goal for 563 minutes and, hopefully, it will instil some much-needed confidence in the team in the run-up to the FA Vase Second Qualifying Round clash with Nostell Miners Welfare this coming Sunday at Brocstedes Park, kickoff 3pm.

A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

of St Helens Town AFC

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop.

Who scored England’s only successful penalty in the shoot-out loss against Portugal at Germany 2006? Q15. What was the World Cup 2010 fad/annoyance, a long horn which was blown almost non-stop during the games called?

1) Gerd Muller, Miroslav Klose & Ronaldo 2) Victor Moses 3) Steven Naismith 4) David Weir 5) Nigeria 6) Ashley Cole 7) USA 1994 8) Dwight Gayle of Crystal Palace 9) David Seaman 10) South Africa 11) Crawley Town & Fleetwood Town 12) Aston Villa 13) 1-0 14) Owen Hargreaves 15) Vuvuzelas News from St Helens Schoolboys The St Helens Schoolboys (U15s) have played three games so far defeating Knowsley Schoolboys in a great friendly 2-1 - goals from Jay Cawley and Leon Morris. The youngsters then played Liverpool Schoolboys in the national cup and was soundly beaten 6-0, the impressive Liverpool side had the captain of the U15s England team among its starting line-up. St Helens played Bury Schoolboys last week and earned a creditable 5-5 draw with the team twice coming from 2 goals down; eventually hitting an equaliser with the last kick of the game, but thoroughly deserving their share of the spoils! Goals came from Leon Morris, Adam Stanley and Joe Westerside; with Adam Stanley putting in a Man of Match performance. Next up for St Helens is league fixture against Knowsley Schoolboys. This is the first St. Helens Schools representative side for two seasons and St. Helens Town have played some of the lads from former schoolboy rep sides in the First team (Dom Whelan and Alex Gillespie) and also have some of the lads in the U21s and U18s (including Tabern, Pye, Brownbill) which is good to see and hopefully will offer that pathway to higher level football.

FA Cup Memories It’s almost thirty years since St Helens Town made the draw for the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup. When the club made the trip to Colwyn Bay for their 1st Qualifying Round fixture on the 7th September 1985 goals from Shaw, Bendon and Davies ensured a comfortable 0-3 win and secured a home tie against Eastwood Hanley at Hoghton Road two weeks later. Collins (Jimmy) and Farnsworth were on target on Saturday 28th September as fellow NWCFL side were dispatched in some style. Leek Town (another NWCFL side) were the opposition in the 3rd Qualifying Round (Saturday 12th October) and Phil Layhe hit the only goal of a tight game at Harrison Park to see Town reach the final qualifying round for the first time. Northern Premier League outfit Morecambe were Town’s opponents in the 4th Qualifying Round on Saturday 26th October) and a trip Christie Park ensured the task of making progress was made even harder. Town put in a tremendous performance and a goal from Mark Gledhill earned a deserved 1-1 draw and a midweek replay back at Hoghton Road. The 1st Round Proper draw was made following the weekend’s game and the winner of the replay would be on their way to York City in November! In 1985 Town had yet to install floodlights which meant a 2pm kick on a Tuesday (29th October) afternoon which in itself would impact on a potential ‘bumper’ gate. What also conspired against St Helens was a regional bus strike by MPTE (Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive) on match day which made travel to the ground extremely difficult. The game, in front of a crowd of over 1100 including York City boss Denis Smith, proved to be another tight affair but the Shrimps edged past Town with a solitary strike – a second half scrappy goal from the Shrimps Jim Thornton settled the game. Town Vice-President Jim Barrett, ‘The replay was a scrappy game but we should have won; both Mark Shaw and Tommy O’Neil missed sitters in the second half. In reality we gave them a bit too much respect and paid the price.’ Morecambe went on to take York to a replay before bowing out 0-2 at Maine Road, home of Manchester City. The St Helens Town team v Morecambe (both games): Johnston (GK), Collins D, Wilson, McComb, Bendon, Shaw, Gledhill, O’Neil, Layhe, Davies, Farnsworth and Woodyer (Sub) Six of the Town team would go on to be part of the FA Vase Wembley success the following season: Andy Johnston, Paul Wilson, John Bendon, Tommy O’Neil, Jay McComb and Phil Layhe all playing in the April 1987 final.

Match Report Town through in Vase St Helens Town 2-0 Nostell Miners Welfare Sunday 5th October 2014 A week of mixed fortunes for St. Helens Town who went out of the Liverpool Senior cup at the first round stage at Evo Stik North side Burscough on Tuesday, but made good progress in the financially lucrative FA Challenge Vase, by virtue of a 2-0 win over Northern Counties East side Nostell Miners Welfare at Broctedes Park on Sunday.

Sunday’s game was a different kettle of fish, against a team who have yet to win this season, but Town had an early scare inside the opening minutes, when Rory Crowther did well to save a diving header from centre-half Tom Brook. St. Helens seized the initiative, but could only muster a number of half chances in the first half hour. Karl Bergqvist did well under pressure but could only steer his shot on to the top of the bar after 7 minutes. The same player had another chance after 10 minutes, but had to hit his shot early, only managing to find keeper Ben Saynor and soon afterwards, Saynor did well to prevent Andy Gillespie netting. Gareth Grant, moved into a midfield role, enjoyed a more influential role and was unlucky to fire just wide of the post on 26 minutes, then Gillespie beat the goalkeeper, but could not net from a tight angle a few moments later. With the interval approaching, Town’s forward pressure eventually paid off, when Gillespie scored from a forced error in defence and Town went in 1-0 up. The second half began in the same pattern and Crowther was called upon to save a fierce shot from Jamie Moxon. That the was best chance the visitors had and Town were able to develop their attacking play, especially after substitutes Chad Whyte, Lee Harrison and Tom Lightbody entered the fray. A second goal from Karl Bergqvist half way through the second period secured St. Helens’ passage into the First Round Proper. The pressure had been building on the Nostell defence and Whyte’s shot rebounded off a defender to find Bergqvist unmarked and he lashed in the loose ball, giving Saynor no chance from 15 yards. Town’s reward for the victory is another home draw where they will host Yorkshire Amateur of the Toolstation Northern Counties East Division One (Step 6) on Saturday 1st November, 3pm.
