Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Volair Park for this our first home game of the 2016-17 season and on our new home midweek night of Thursday! We welcome Sandbach United newcomers to league and playing just their fourth game this evening. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game after becoming our newest friends! It has been a while since our last home competitive fixture which was here at Prescot Cables as pitch problems saw us host Hanley Town on Thursday 5th May (we liked Thursday’s so much we decided to pick them as our midweek night this season!) We knew that nothing other than a victory would do and Hanley knew that if they won they would take the league title. The sides both played like their seasons depended on it, which of course they did. After a fine first half performance from St Helens the experience of the visitors told in the second half against their younger, greener hosts and a brace from Theo Stair was enough to end our season and secure the title for Hanley. Cheadle piped up to 6th place by a point and took the final play-off place and as we found out last month we also missed out on qualification for the FA Cup by that same one point margin. This season is the first time we have not competed in FA Cup since the 1973/4 season. We started this season off with a long trip north to Carlisle City on the opening Saturday of the season and a poor start saw Town 2-0 down with less than 10 minutes on the clock. The visitors bounced back well and Eddie Pegler opened the clubs account for the season just before the half hour mark and George Lomax levelled matters on 34 minutes Town were pushing before the break to take the lead and struck the woodwork and had a goalmouth melee with several City men putting their bodies on the line with last ditch blocks and challenges. After the interval Town dominated and struck the woodwork again before they were caught with a sucker-punch on the counter attack the hosts going back into the lead just after the hour mark. We bounced back again, resuming the almost constant pressure and levelled for a second time when skipper Andy Gillespie netted from a free kick which the home stopper will have thought he could have done better with and again pressed looking to take the lead and start the season will a maximum return the woodwork was again struck and chance after chance was repelled with all of the action in the Carlisle final third it was not to be as Town were again caught on the counter with less than five minutes remaining and despite further pressure in the closing stages the league new boys secured their first victory. We then moved on to Saturday as we visited Cheadle Town this time we got off to an outstanding start as Danny Greene scored a worldie before Chris Lomax gave Andy Gillespie a close range tap in and the excellent first half was rounded off when a Chris Lomax effort was parried by the keeper and brother George was on hand to turn the rebound home to send the visitors into the interval comfortably in the ascendancy. As the second half drew on Town looked to have the spoils and when Cheadle netted in the 90th minute it looked to be a consolation but two further strikes in added on time saw the hosts share the spoils and the return trip to Merseyside saw some inquests on the crazy closing stages. We move onto today’s contest as we take on another of the league new boys Sandbach who secured their first win on Saturday winning 3-1 at Atherton LR after having lost at home against Holker and away at Widnes in their first two outings. Both sides will be looking to secure a maximum return this evening after mixed starts to the season so far. Let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them onto their first victory of the season. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

Sandbach United History Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed in 1920 and played in the Cheshire County League before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s. In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education suite. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base, which is just 3 miles from junction 17 of the M6. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

Chairman’s Notes Good evening and welcome to Volair Park, home of Prescot Cables, for our first ‘home’ game of the new season. We extend a warm welcome to first time opponents Sandbach United FC; we hope along with our own support and tonight’s match officials, we are treated to an entertaining encounter. It’s been a disappointing start to the campaign for Town as an opening day loss at Carlisle City by the odd goal in seven was followed last Saturday by a stoppage time capitulation which saw the lads throw away a 3-0 lead. Like all games we must now learn from the experience and hope we can maintain last Saturday’s fine first half effort over a full 90 minutes (and beyond).

Tonight’s visitors were promoted to the newly named Hallmark Security League this summer and have had a mixed start with two defeats before picking up their first three points last weekend with a 1-3 away victory at Atherton LR. I am not quite sure where the summer has gone – so much for a break from football. The club continues to work hard on and off the field and we wait in anticipation of a return to St Helens at the Ruskin Drive development. In the meantime we thank our hosts Cables who will act as our ‘landlords’ for a few games. We expect more updates on the development progress and tonight’s programme has a few images taken earlier this week which includes the new artificial pitch and stand. There’s still plenty to do but there’s light at the end of the tunnel and our thanks go to St Helens Council and The Liverpool County FA for their continued support. I’d like to welcome tonight’s Match Sponsors Beer EnGin (Micropub) who will be opening in Whiston on Friday 26th August – our best wishes for a successful launch and a bright future. Tonight’s Match Ball sponsors are Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, who are also our main club sponsors and community partner for 2016-17 – many thanks for your continued support. There’s lots of other sponsorship news elsewhere in tonight’s programme and we will feature more news in future editions. Of course this season sees the team take to the pitch in a blue and white home kit for the first time in over 15 years – this coincides with our return to St Helens in what will be our 70th anniversary year and one which sees the club commemorate 30 years since our FA Vase final win at Wembley. Don’t forget we have new pin badges and club mugs for sale and the new replica home and away shirts are also available from £30. Enjoy the game and I will hopefully see some of you at Litherland REMYCA on Saturday. We’re back at ‘home’ on Thursday 1st September when Prestwich Heys are our visitors. From The Dugout A big welcome to everyone tonight for our 1st home league fixture in which we welcome league newcomers Sandbach Town. With the new ground at Ruskin Drive not yet ready we are looking forward to playing again at our new temporary home Volair Park home of Evostick neighbours Prescot Cables. It seems an age ago since we played our final league game against Hanley Town here. With a seasons work hanging on the line for both teams we turned in a fantastic performance only to go down 2-0 to the eventual Champions a result which saw us miss out on a play off place and end our 2015/16 season. The close season has seen a number of players depart Adam Lawrence Jack Marshall have left and Aaron Morris has opted to sign for Runcorn Linnets in the Premier Division. We wish the 3 of them the best of luck for the future. In stark contrast to last season which saw almost all the playing squad leave the club after relegation from the Premier Div we have retained all the other players and managed to secure some excellent new signings. Goalkeeper Lee Novak, Phil Williams, Cole Ashton and Chris Lomax have all joined up after previous spells with the club together with new signing Will Threlkeld. After a very positive pre season we approached the new season with a great deal of confidence. Our first league game at Carlisle was a proper see-saw affair. We were very flat for first 25 minutes conceding 2 goals from set pieces then we rip them apart for the next 20 minutes with goals from George Lomax and a ‘worldy’ from Eddie Pegler 2-2 at half time. We then concede another sloppy one before reasserting ourselves with an Andy Gillespie free kick 3-3 with only 1 team in it but then we manage to throw it away in final 3 minutes. I definitely considered it to be three points lost. Our 2nd game last Saturday saw us make the shorter trip to Cheadle where a scintillating 1st half performance saw us race into a 3 goal half time lead with goals from Danny Greene, Andy and George after missing chances to extend our lead we succumbed to a late aerial onslaught from Cheadle conceding 3 goals in the longest three minutes of injury time ever played.

All credit to Cheadle for not giving up a lost cause but once again defensive failings as a team have seen us throw away points. It is something we have to improve upon as you can't achieve anything conceding 3 goals a game. Hopefully today's game will be just as exciting but with a better result from our point of view Alan Gillespie

Celebrating 70 years, 1946-2016

Town Managers Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road.

Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs Combination Championship Trophy

Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons

Past & Present in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (left) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price took over the managerial reigns. The end of the 2014-15 season culminated in relegation for Town and Ian Price had already informed the club of his intention to step down. U21s boss Alan Gillespie and Ian Price’s long time assistant Nick Matthews were promoted to the joint managers position. Nick Matthews

My time at Town I enter my 8th season watching my local football team, and I’ve loved every minute of it. by Kieran Ford There have been many matches during my involvement of St Helens Town that have filled me with agony and ecstasy, a 10-0 victory, a 9-0 defeat, a last minute relegation and play off dream, accompanied by a few boring 0-0 draws along the way, and at 17 years old, I can expect plenty more to come! Don’t get me wrong, there are many people much older than myself who have a more weighted opinion on what the draw of non-league football is, but I think that the unknown element of anything makes it more appealing, and non-league football is no different. Right from my first tentative steps into supporting St Helens Town as a young boy in 2009 to entering manhood this season, every experience has been one that you can’t predict, and has helped me away from the stadium as well as in it. In my first years of being involved at St Helens Town, I got to grasp the fact that football at this level is far different to that of the upper echelons of the game. The levels of responsibility and involvement even just by being a fan in those early years got me hooked on the club. Moving from the Town didn’t stop us either, as my dad, grandad and I made it a weekly routine to watch our team play. 6 years, countless amounts of players, managers, matches and a relegation later, the nucleus of the clubs committee still remained. John and Jeff’s cries from the touchline, Jim’s fascinating stories about Town’s yesteryear, John Cole chasing every ball at every home match, and car journeys with my dad and grandad made the whole experience a joy to behold, and added to the cliché that football is more than just a game.

Last year I started college which meant that important decisions about my future had to be made, still unsure what I wanted to be, I took subjects that I enjoyed with the hope that a goal would click in my head. A family member suggested I started writing match reports for our games, as my football knowledge at this level grew. In January I wrote my first report and haven’t looked back since, it was at that moment I knew journalism was for me, and what better place to gain some experience than at the club I now felt more and more a part of. I finally found something I enjoyed doing, and by getting experience at the age of 17 will only aid me in the future. This has allowed me to write for my local newspaper and to contribute to an upcoming school newsletter, something I wouldn’t dream about this time last year. I can now combine my two loves, football and writing, whilst doing both at the same time. As I look to study journalism at university next year, I’m sure that my football experience will aid me in my future endeavours. Recently I joined the committee here at St Helens Town, which was the ultimate sign that my involvement at the club has helped me grow as a person. This is the pinnacle of my time here so far, and my progression from fan to committee member has inspired me to take the same attitude of passion and dedication into other parts of life away from football. Throughout my time at the club, I’ve noticed a worrying trend that not many people that are my age are not taking a similar journey to myself, and that not many youngsters are pulling their family members arm off, dragging them down the road to watch their local side play football like I was at the beginning of my tenure at the club. I hope the return back to St Helens in the coming months encourages more football fanatics in the town and surrounding areas to take a trip to Ruskin and to try out a match and immerse themselves into that rewarding experience that I still feel every week. I’ve spent over half of my life at this club, from playing for the junior side to now being on the club’s committee, the past 9 years have produced many amazing memories, and I’m sure there will be many more to come...

Celebrating 70 years, 1946-2016

A Brief History The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged Tommy O’Neil over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record Wembley,1987 attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An alltime club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April

of St Helens Town

St Helens Town 1948 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent mid-season form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early -season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

Match Report What Just Happened? St Helens squander a 3 goal lead in stoppage time as Cheadle grab a point. By Kieran Ford After late drama against Carlisle City last week, St Helens Town travelled to the Park Road stadium looking to gain their first points of the season. Cheadle were also looking to do the same, after a 3-0 defeat to an impressive Litherland REMYCA outfit in midweek, who appear to be the early pacesetters so far. St Helens made 4 changes from their previous game, welcoming back Ant Whelan, Ste Rigby and Sam Sheen as they were unavailable last week. Danny Greene also started on the right hand side in place of Phil Williams who dropped to the bench. It was Greene, looking to prove a point, who started brightly, with several displays of neat footwork to get the better of the Cheadle left back which included a fantastic scoop through his legs to leave the Cheadle man red faced. Greene gave St Helens the lead just before the 10 minute mark, with a strike largely similar to that of Ed Pegler last week. A poor clearance found Greene who’s first time effort arrowed into the top corner to give the away side the lead.

In a role reversal of last weekend, St Helens started the brighter and hardly allowed Cheadle out of their own half due to the persistent pressing of Chris and George Lomax along with Andy Gillespie. When Cheadle did venture into the blues’ half, they were able to win the ball back and counter attack quickly, this was seen as Greene’s cross field ball found George Lomax who beat his man and crossed for Andy Gillespie, but his acrobatic effort could only find the hands of Jupp in the Cheadle goal. The visitors added a second as Chris Lomax beat his man on the left hand side, before passing the ball through the goal keeper’s legs for Andy Gillespie to tap in to score his second goal in 2 games. Cheadle did have a golden chance to get back into the game however, as a St Helens offside trap went wrong which left Samuel Noar through on goal but he could only put his shot wide. St Helens got a third just after the half hour mark, as Andy Presho played in Chris Lomax, whose shot was smartly saved by the goalkeeper, however the ball dropped to George who tapped into an empty net to give the away side a seemingly unassailable lead going into half time. HT: Cheadle Town 0 – 3 St Helens Town (Greene, 9) (Gillespie, 21) (George Lomax, 32)

v Cheadle Town St Helens could have made it 4 straight after half time, after a Gillespie effort hit the post and the rebound found George Lomax, however he snatched at the effort and missed the target. However, the visitors seemed to fall foul of the three goal cushion as Cheadle started to gain territorial advantage. Noar was Cheadle’s main attacking threat in the first half and carried this on into the second, as he had two efforts that were fired wide and saved by Lee Novak respectively. St Helens also had chances to put the game to bed but Andy Gillespie fired over before sub Will Threlkeld could only fire at Jupp who made a good save before Gillespie hit a Cheadle defender on the line. Heading into stoppage time at the end of the game, St Helens looked on course for a 3-0 victory to give them their first win of the season; however this wasn’t to be the case. Cheadle got a presumed “consolation” as Noar outmuscled Ant Whelan before firing past Novak, before they added a second a minute later through a Liam Tongue free header at the back post to ensure “squeaky bum time” for the last few minutes. Lo and behold, Cheadle equalised in the 3rd minute of stoppage time after a long Jupp free kick was missed by Novak to allow Joseph Shaw to head in and leave both sets of fans bewildered as the full time whistle blew. FT: Cheadle Town (Noar, 90) (Tongue, 90+1) (Shaw, 90+3) 3 – 3 St Helens Town (Greene, 9) (Gillespie, 21) (George Lomax, 32) That late collapse means that St Helens Town now have 1 point from their opening 2 games, but have the opportunity to collect their first victory of the season at home to Sandbach United on Thursday night, who themselves beat Atherton LR 3-1 on Saturday. This is before visiting league leaders Litherland REMYCA on Saturday afternoon.

Match Report Birch Caps off a Seven Goal Treet By Kieran Ford (Twitter:@KieranFord99) St Helens lose a 7 goal thriller to league newcomers Carlisle City on the opening day of the Hallmark Security League Division 1. St Helens Town made the 228 mile round trip to Gillford Park Stadium with a fear of the unknown due to the fact this was Carlisle City’s first ever game in the division and could be seen as an unknown quality. What Town did know however, was that they could go into the game after an encouraging pre season which saw them include most of last season’s squad, however there were 6 new signings on show including the returning Cole Ashton and Chris Lomax. Town lined up with a 3-5-2 formation that had been tested during pre season and had been seldom used in last campaign. With Ant Whelan and Ste Rigby missing, Sam Rawsthorne and Danny Brady filled in at centre back and left wing back respectively. This defence was immediately tested as Carlisle started the brighter, encouraged by an optimistic home crowd. They made a dream start to their first campaign in this division as Town failed to deal with a Mark Boyd free kick into the area, the ball eventually found Carlisle City number 9 Jordan Atkinson fired home from close range. The hosts doubled their advantage minutes later as another set piece was put into the box, this time a corner, which broke to Carlisle’s Mark Boyd who’s first time effort nestled into the bottom corner from 25 yards, leaving Town keeper Lee Novak with no chance. Carlisle had their tails up at this point and smelled blood, however Town held their nerve and started to gain territorial advantage, largely down to Phil Williams’ marauding advances down the right hand side helped his team push up the pitch. St Helens found their way back into the game through a man who knows how to score a wonder goal. A header from a Town cross could only find Ed Pegler, who hit the ball on the half volley from 25 yards which flew into the top corner. Game on. Just after the half hour mark, this entertaining first half had a fourth goal as the visitors equalised. The Lomax brothers George and Chris have linked up so well in pre season, and did so again here as a Chris Lomax cross found George whose bullet header put Town on level terms going into half time.

v Carlisle City HT: Carlisle City (Atkinson, 9) (Boyd, 13) 2 – 2 St Helens Town (Pegler, 24) (George Lomax, 32) Town started the second half the stronger, as they looked to capitalise on the momentum generated at the end of the first period. Phil Williams had a shot blocked before a Rory Delap esc long throw from Sam Rawsthorne broke to last season’s league top goalscorer Andy Gillespie who fired over. However, this pressure counted for little as a Carlisle counter attack found Mark Worrall at the back post that beat Brady to the ball to restore the host’s advantage. Town continued to press after this and a George Lomax header forced a decent save from Carlisle keeper Greenall. St Helens levelled in bizarre circumstances as a 30 yard Gillespie free kick seemed to be a simple catch for the Carlisle City goalkeeper but he let the ball squirm through his legs to put Town level for the second time. The visitors continued this spell of dominance with a George Lomax effort that was deflected wide. Town then surged up the field with a sweeping counter attack, a cross from substitute Danny Greene found the head of Andy Gillespie but his effort could only hit the bar. Similarly to last season, Town’s attacking threat was strong but they conceded a 4th goal late on. Carlisle grabbed a winner through Mark Birch as his first time effort was too powerful for Lee Novak, sending the visitors on the 114 mile journey back to St Helens empty handed.

FT: Carlisle City (Atkinson, 9) (Boyd, 13) (Worrall, 62) (Birch, 86) 4 – 3 St Helens Town (Pegler, 24) (George Lomax, 32) (Gillespie, 70)

League News Litherland REMYCA have announced plans to give the local community ownership of the club. The move comes following the club’s successful application to The Hive business support programme, which offers assistance to people wanting to start or grow co-operative or community enterprises, and provides a national business support programme for new and existing co-operatively run organisations. The club has always focused not just on the game but also on the social good football can bring to people, from health and well-being to education and employment, and now plans to embed this by giving local people – not just the players, families and fans but the wider community too – a stake in the organisation by becoming a co-operative that is owned and run by them together. The approach has been successfully used by a range or organisations, from sports clubs to shops and historic buildings, to give local people a say and an opportunity to invest in important assets in their area. Their application to The Hive will match the club with an adviser who can help them make community ownership a reality. Don Rimmer, Chairman of Litherland REMYCA FC, said: "The support by The Hive will provide the professional expertise and guidance to manage the transition of our club to become a community owned grassroots football club."

"We have a clear vision to extend our role, broaden our activities and add social value to what we do. The concept of wider open membership provides a democratic model through which people have a stake in how the club is organised and develops. “It also has the potential to increase membership offers the prospect of financial sustainability, giving real security for the long term future of the club." Ed Mayo, Secretary General of Co-operatives UK, said: “Litherland is an inspiring example of a community based football club. Already a successful club, it has a clear vision of how it can give local people a stake in the club’s activities and future. The Hive – which offers support to the UK’s 7,000 cooperatives – will give Litherland expert advice to help make this a reality.” Congleton Town - the Bears have announced that Fairerpower, the energy scheme launched by Cheshire East Council last year with great success, have renewed their sponsorship of the club for a second season. Nigel Moorhouse, Director of Congleton Town FC added: “We are delighted to be partnering with Fairerpower in such a great initiative and scheme that will help our supporters, their friends, families and the wider community save money on their energy expenses and we look forward to developing this partnership further over the coming seasons”.

League News Millers get the winning feeling at last One of the most welcomed victories of the weekend will have been at Church Lane, where New Mills beat Cammell Laird 1907 by 4-3. While a hat trick by the Millers' Haydn Foulds was the obvious highlight of the game, from a club point of view it was their first league victory for 489 days, after going through the whole of last season's Evo-Stik League campaign without a win. Now they have one under their belts, the challenge now for the Millers is to keep the winning run going.

Tangerine dream strikes AFC Blackpool twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw down at FC Oswestry Town, but the main talking point to emerge from the game was the quality of both of their goals. A 30 yarder into the top left hand corner of the net from Matthew Richardson in the first half was fit to grace any game, but even that was topped by Matthew Muscroft in the second half, who picked up the ball in the centre circle, took a step forward and unleashed a worldie from 40 yards that was heading for the net from the moment it left his boot. With shooting power like that in the ranks, opposing goalkeepers will need to be alert when facing the Tangerines this season. Never a dull moment watching St Helens Town If it's entertainment you're after, St Helens Town are the team to watch at the moment. Their opening day game at Carlisle City was a ding-dong affair, with the Cumbrians eventually winning 4-3 with a late goal, and anyone leaving their game at Cheadle Town a few minutes early would certainly have had cause for regret. St Helens were three goals up heading into stoppage time, but incredibly Cheadle struck three times in the added minutes to salvage a draw. Maybe not the outcomes Saints would have wanted, but great entertainment for the neutrals who turned up to watch. Bullets firing in goals One team that has definitely hit the ground running is Alsager Town, who recorded their third straight win with a 4-1 success at Charnock Richard, in which Michael Lennon scored a hat trick. It's also the third game in a row that Wayne Brotherton's men have scored four goals, with two of the games away from home, and it looks already like the Bullets will be among the promotion chasers come the end of the season and that their return to Division One could be a brief one. Cobbydalers start with a bang Another club competing in the First Division for the first time in many years are Silsden, and they certainly signalled their intentions to step back up again quickly with a 6-0 win over Ashton Town in their opening league game of the season. With six different players scoring the goals, there's clearly no lack of firepower in the ranks, and the Cobbydalers have certainly put a marker down for others in the division to note.
