Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this FA Cup with Busweiser, Extra Preliminary Round Tie against our friends from Abbey Hey. The start to the season has been an excellent one for the club as we have recorded two 2-1 victories in our first two league matches. After our opening victory at Colne we followed this up with another 2-1 success here over AFC Liverpool on Tuesday. It was an interesting contest as we dominated the early stages and netted another early goal with Lee Crompton firing a corner home from close range. Further pressure did not result in a goal and AFC Liverpool came back into the game levelling through Francis Barry as the teams went into the break at 1-1. A quick start to the second half saw Ste Edwards net his second goal of the campaign and the striker also missed a penalty late in the contest as Town held off the pressure from the visitors to secure the victory. This afternoon sees us open our FA Cup campaign with a difficult assignment against an Abbey Hey side who put seven past Holker Old Boys last Saturday and backed this up by putting five past Leek CSOB on Tuesday to stay at the top of the First Division table. The winners of this afternoon’s tie will visit Evo-Stick, Division One South outfit Sheffield the worlds oldest club in the next round a fortnight today. Ian and the lads will know that they will need to be at their best as we look to advance to the next round against a Abbey Hey outfit who will be brimming with confidence after their free scoring start to the season. Whilst Town will be favourites given the fact that we play a division higher that our visitors we will not be underestimating them. If this afternoon’s tie ends level the replay will take place at Abbey Hey’s Abbey Stadium on Tuesday with a 7.45pm. Should there be a win for either side then Town will host Norton United in league action here on Tuesday as long as they don’t draw in their FA Cup tie this afternoon! Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory and the Preliminary Round! Enjoy the game . . . In Town Today . . . Abbey Hey FC were formed in 1902 in the Abbey Hey district of Gorton, some three miles away from the centre of Manchester. During their formative years and through the two World Wars, the club was disbanded and reformed on a number of occasions. Starting in the Church Sunday Leagues, they progressed through the Manchester Amateur Leagues during the intervening years but the club really came into its own in the 1960s after it took in the players of the Admiralty Gunning Engineering Department (AGED) following its closure. Alf Gentry, the manager of Abbey Hey at this point, decided that with the influx of new players he would step down in favour of the aged Manager, Danny Danson. However, Gentry did stay on in a senior position. The new players made up the backbone of the club during the decade with some staying on after their playing careers had ended. Most notable of these was Allan Vaughn, who occupied the positions of treasurer and secretary. Ken Brown also stayed on, becoming manager after Danny Danson had retired, and won numerous honours culminating in 1978 with the club deciding to apply for a position in the Manchester League. The application was successful and the following year the club began playing in the 2nd Division of the Manchester League, achieving promotion in their first season. Reaching this position meant that the club had to find an enclosed ground suitable for playing their home games. The nearest ground available at the time was in Chorlton at Werburghs Road. The ground was owned by a car dealership, Lookers, but was being used by a local school. It was agreed that if Abbey Hey FC carried out some improvements, such as installing showers in the dressing rooms, they could rent the ground. After two years, Lookers reneged on the deal and the club was forced out, this time to a ground at Godfreys, an area named after a prominent local councillor, Godfrey Erman, who donated the ground to the local populace of Abbey Hey for their use as a recreational area. The next eighteen years were fairly successful with the club winning the Gilchrist Cup (under managers Jim Whittaker and Dave Denby) and a League title, but this ended when Abbey Hey FC were told that as from the start of the new season[when?] they would not be allowed to use Godfreys. This was despite the large amounts of money that the club had spent on drainage and despite assurances when they had taken over the derelict ground that as long as Abbey Hey had a football team this would be their ground. The club were not asked to pay an increased rent nor were they involved in any discussion about the future of the ground. It became apparent that a local company had offered ÂŁ10,000 to use the ground which the administrators, on behalf of the local residents, accepted. The club was forced to move away or fold. A temporary home, at the old English Steel ground, was arranged on a season to season basis but after only 2 years, the ground was sold. During the two years the club were based at the ground, negotiations with Crossley Motors Ltd had been taking place to buy a disused ground in Goredale Avenue, Gorton. Unfortunately, the land was not in good order and was becoming an eyesore with fences falling down and people using it for fly-tipping. Contractors working for the council had tipped 1,000 tons of hardcore onto the car park to prevent access to the ground. Matters had reached an impasse between Abbey Hey FC and Crossleys when Manchester City Council stepped in, They informed Crossleys that if an agreement was not made with the people that they were dealing with, the ground would be the subject of a compulsory purchase order. This tipped the scales in favour of the football club who were asked to make an offer for the ground which was promptly accepted. Legal representation and a bank loan were quickly arranged and in 1984 the club had their own home. The bank loan was paid off and the ground was improved including having the fly tipped hardcore removed from the ground. NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12

. . . Abbey Hey Football Club Jim Clark was to join during these turbulent times as manager, a position he was to occupy for the next 18 years. The club went on to gain success in the Manchester League during the late eighties and early nineties, winning the Premier Division Championship on five occasions during this period. In 1997, after finishing 2nd in the Manchester League Premier Division, the club applied for membership of the North West Counties Football League. Following a ground grading visit by League Officials, the club was accepted into the 2nd Division for the 1998 season. In the clubs first season, Jim Clark managed to clinch the runners-up spot after a fantastic last day of the season when Abbey Hey had to win to gain promotion. This they did and were promoted to the 1st Division, as runner-up to Fleetwood Freeport, at their first attempt. Promotion to the 1st Division meant that the club had to install floodlights. True to form, they designed, ordered, erected and wired them within a couple of months. The biggest job during the ground improvements was the building of the new clubhouse and dressing rooms. Planning permission was given with the majority of work once again being carried out by the clubs own members. To finance this project, low interest loans were taken out from the FA with the remainder of the money achieved through fund raising schemes. The club has played in the FA Cup for the first time since the turn of the millennium, but have only won one tie, a victory over Bamber Bridge on penalties in 2002– 03, to reach the first qualifying round for the only time. They have had more success in the FA Vase, their best campaign being again in 2002–03 when they made the third round (last 64). In 2002–03 the club celebrated their centenary year with their highest placed 1st Division position at the time (13th). In 2004 ten members of the committee were given long service awards for their 25 years of service in grass roots football by the Manchester FA. In 2009–10 Abbey Hey were struggling half way through the season with only 4 points to their name and bottom of the league after 25 games. However, following the appointments of Barrie Walker as Manager and Andrew Harris as Assistant Manager in November 2009, Abbey Hey made several new signings signalling a turn in fortune for the club as they picked up 30 points in the 2nd half of the season but it was not enough and they were relegated from the Premier Division. The improved form in the second of the season saw Abbey Hey going all the way to the final of the North West Counties League Challenge Cup beating Winsford United 3–0 in the final. Hey had a difficult first season in Division One as they struggled to come to terms with losing some of their players and finished in a disappointing 15th place. Last term saw much improvement and the club were amongst the front runners for the majority of the season but could not displace either Wigan Robin Park or Norton United and ended up finishing in 3rd place. A Word from the Dugout . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street I would firstly like to welcome today’s opponents Abbey Hey I hope they will enjoy the game and have a safe journey home. The magic of the FA cup arrives at Edge Green Street today and it’s my first time managing any team in the FA Cup. I have to be honest and say I have always been a bit jealous when at previous clubs when the FA Cup games came around as I would not be involved in the day or the game as I would always have my own duties of looking after the reserve teams so today for me personally will be a special day to say I have been involved in this seasons FA Cup competition. Today’s opponents Abbey Hey will be no push over and they were mightily unlucky not too achieved promotion last season finishing third after being top of the league for 75% of the season. They have started this season with two fantastic results 7-0 away win at Holker Old Boys and a 5-2 home win against Leek CSOB so as you can see from their results they are not a team who struggle to score goals. Martin Pilkington and Wes Harney will be two players we will need to keep our eyes on both quality players who know where the goal is. Martin was last season’s North West Counties Football League Division One ‘Player of the Year’ which is a fantastic accolade to collect and shows his quality. As for ourselves we continued our good start to the season with an excellent 2-1 win against AFC Liverpool on Tuesday night our performance again was good, we worked hard but we know we can still improve. AFC Liverpool probably edged the possession but I didn’t feel they hurt us or caused us to many problems. Our goals came from Lee Crompton and Stephen Edwards who both again put in excellent performances. I hope everyone enjoys the game today and let’s hope we can continue our good start to the season. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round encounter with our friends from Abbey Hey FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and that we are all treated to an entertaining encounter. Both teams have a good start to their respective North West Counties Football League seasons with Abbey Hey recording a 7-0 win at Holker Old Boys last weekend while in mid-week they ran out 5-2 winners in a home game against Leek CSOB. For Town their 2-1 hard fought victory over AFC Liverpool on Tuesday night built on last weekend’s win at Colne. Tuesday evening saw Lee Crompton hit a goal just before the quarter hour mark to give Town a deserved lead. AFC Liverpool came back into the game and a goal five minutes before the break levelled the scores. Within a minute of the restart Town regained the lead when Stephen Edwards rifled home at the back post. Town could also afford to miss a penalty, although credit to Carl Williams in the Liverpool goal who made a great save. Stephen Edwards also had a couple of good opportunities to put the beyond doubt and the visitors also had their captain Steven Williams dismissed for foul and abusive language apparently aimed at the referee! Despite the ten-men Liverpool poured forward late on and Town did well to keep them at bay with relative comfort. Our best wishes go to Darren Torpey who was injured early in the second half and was taken to hospital with an ankle injury. Today’s visitors will be hoping to regain their place in the NWCFL Premier Division having gone very close last season. The Gorton based outfit headed the table for much of the campaign but eventually fell outside the top two promotion spots. The winners of today’s game will make the journey to world’s oldest football club Sheffield FC in two weeks time and in doing so collect the £1000 prize money on offer today. Should there be a need for a replay it will take place on Tuesday evening at Abbey Hey. If there’s a positive result here today we will hopefully entertain Premier Division newcomers Norton United on Tuesday evening (14th August), kick off 7.45pm - as long as there’s a positive result in Norton’s FA Cup encounter against Alvechurch. A further reminder that this season has seen a slight revamp of our 100 Club which last season cost £5 per entry each month. This season we NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

have rebranded the monthly draw as a 500 Club with entries costing just £1 each. If you’d like to enter please see any member of the committee for details - we aim to have a prize fund of £250 each month which will see a 1st prize of £150, 2nd prize £75 and 3rd prize £25. The draw is open to anyone so please ask your friends, family and work colleagues and our first draw will take place on Saturday 28th August. Many thanks to the players sponsors who have come on board so far this season - I am sure there will be more to follow. If you’d like to sponsor a player it costs just £50 for the whole season and you receive a quarter page advert in each edition of our match day programme. We’re still on the look out for a main sponsor following the departure of Johnsons Toyota Liverpool - if your interested or know a company who might be please contact me on 07713 339 682 for more details. Congratulations to Steve Leather and everyone in our Junior Section who have recently been awarded The FA Chartered Standard Club Community Club Award by the Lancashire County FA. Not only has the club been successful in winning the County Award but their nomination has also been successful in winning the North West Regional Award. As a regional winner the club’s nomination will now go forward to see if the club is successful as one of The FA Community Award National winners. The club received a framed certificate, commemorative plaque and an FA equipment pack as well as tickets for tomorrow’s Charity Shield Final between Chelsea and Manchester City at Villa Park. Steve was presented with the awards at last Wednesday evening’s Lancashire County FA Senior Cup Final between Accrington Stanley and Manchester United (pictured above). Steve also picked up the accolade of Club Secretary of the Year 2011-12 for the Warrington Junior Football League. Finally, let’s hope for an entertaining encounter and please join us in the clubhouse after the game for the usual post-match debate and the presentation of the St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ awards for both today’s game and Tuesday’s encounter with AFC Liverpool which went to stalwart Brian Hatton. Town in the Combination . . . The original St. Helens Town were members of the Liverpool County Combination as far back as 1914/15 season, alongside Burscough Rangers, Borough of Wallasey, Skelmersdale United, Widnes County, South Liverpool, Southport Park Villa, Clock Face, Earlestown Rovers and North Engineers. Records from that season, however, together with the other First World War years, are incomplete. A team referred to as St. Helens Association competed in a five-team league in 1917/18. Emerging from the Great War, records are again hard to find, but a team called St. Helens Junction appear in the final table for 1921/22, finishing next to bottom in a 13-team competition, having played 24, won 6, drawn 2 and lost 16 games. Town's history points to the club ceasing to function after 1923, but Liverpool County Combination official tables show a St. Helens Town team nearing the end of the 1926/27 season two off the bottom of the league, having played 23, won 6, drawn 5 and lost 12 games. The table is said to be incomplete. The following season, 1927/28, saw St. Helens Town 7th of 11 clubs in the final table, having played 20, won 9, drawn 1 and lost 10 games. No other mention is found after that season, so more research is called for to confirm the history of the club. The present club was re-formed in 1946 and having played friendly games at various venues in a truncated 1945/46 season, the club secured the Hoghton Road ground and entered the Liverpool County Combination ready for the 1946/47 campaign. The only official table for that season shows only the top three placings, namely Liverpool A, Skelmersdale United and Burscough in that order. The First Division table for 1947/48 shows Town in 9th place, having played 34 games, won 13, drawn 8 and lost 13, goals for 83, against 80. The table is rather curious, as there are only 17 teams listed, whereas the number of games played by all clubs suggests there were 18 teams competing that season. The following season, 1948/49 was Towns last as members of the Liverpool County Combination, as they moved to the Lancashire Combination in 1949. Town ended the 1948/49 season in 7th place, having played 34 games, won 19, drawn 4 and lost 11, goals for 72, against 60. That season, the club won its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup (pictured), defeating Runcorn in the final at Hope Street, Prescot. St Helens Town Reserves were members of the Liverpool County Combination between 1962/63 and 1973/74. Their record (where tables are available) is as follows: 1962/63 2nd Division P30 W16 D3 L11 F86 A63 Pts35 Position 5/16 1963/64 2nd Division P32 W12 D10 L10 F86 A81 Pts34 Position 8/17 1964/65 1st Division P30 W10 D6 L145 F76 A82 Pts61 Position 2/16 1965/66 no table available 1966/67 no table available 1967/68 1st Division P30 W14 D4 L12 F52 A42 Pts32 Position 7/16

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.
Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Photographs: Above Tommy O’Neil holding aloft the FA Vase in 1987. Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue. St Helens Town AFC Managers . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in midterm. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs Combination Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured left) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Having previously been the manager of highly successful local league side ’Furnacemen’s Arms FC’ Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006 -7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However, the club decided it could not wait for a repeat and an upsurge in results as the final few weeks of the 2008-09 season unfolded and Town remained rooted in a relegation spot. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games of the season. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley (pictured left) steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 200910. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season sees Jimmy McBride makes a return to Town following a brief spell in the Cheshire League with Billinge FC but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - present Ian Granite is appointed following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. St Helens Town . . . Today’s Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup – sponsored again this season by Budweiser - brings Town together with Abbey Hey for the first time in the competition. The clubs have met in North West Counties League matches on 22 previous occasions, most recently on 28th November 2009, a game won by Town at Knowsley Road by 2-0, Mike Scully scoring both goals. Town have won 15 of the league meetings, Abbey Hey 5 and two games have been drawn. The clubs have met previously in the FA Vase, Abbey Hey winning 4-3 in 2006. If today’s game is drawn, there will be a replay at Gorton next Tuesday. Prize money of £1000 awaits today’s winners, as well as a Preliminary Round tie away to Sheffield, who are the oldest football club in the world, on 25th August. Abbey Hey have spent the last three seasons in the First Division, having been relegated in May 2010. However, just after their relegation was confirmed, they won the Vodkat League Cup, beating St. Helens Town’s semi-final conquerors, Winsford United, in the Final. Town have featured regularly in the First Qualifying Round since the club was re-formed in 1946. Their reformation actually resulted in a false start as they were unable to raise a side against Prescot Cables that season and forfeited the tie but their debut in the competition came the following season in 1947/48 which resulted in a loss again to Cables but in 1948/49, they won through three rounds, including a 1-0 win at Formby, but Bangor City (a frequent stumbling block over the next few years) won 3-0 at Hoghton Road in the Second Qualifying Round. The following year, in Bert Trautmann’s final match for Town, Bangor City again won 3-0 at Hoghton Road, in the First Qualifying Round. In 1952/53, a trip to Bangor resulted in a 2-0 defeat and the following year the clubs met again in the Preliminary Round at City Road: the game ended 2-2, but Town lost the replay 5-1. The next occasion Town reached the First Qualifying Round was in 1957/58, when they lost 3-5 at home to Llandudno and the same team put Town out the following season at the Council Field, this time by 3-0. Between 1961/62 and 1970/71, Town had the good fortune to avoid the Preliminary Round altogether, but only three times did they progress to the Second Qualifying Round, where they lost at Altrincham (4-1 in 1964/65) and at home twice to Skelmersdale United, 0-3 in 1965/66 and 0-1 in 1968/69. Prescot Cables (twice), Ashton United (twice), Earlestown, Rhyl, Chorley, Droylsden and Rossendale United were our conquerors in between. Skelmersdale again, Rhyl once more, New Brighton, Oswestry (after two replays) and Macclesfield accounted for Town at the First Qualifying stage in the remaining years of the 1970s. The 1980s was undoubtedly the best decade for Town in the FA Cup. In NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

. . . in the FA Cup 1980/81, wins at Southport (3-1) and Leyland Motors (4-0) set up a Third Qualifying Round clash against Fleetwood Town at Hoghton Road, but Town went out 0-1. Although a 4-0 defeat at home to Bootle in 1982/83 was a disappointing result, two years later a 2-0 win over Congleton led to a Second Qualifying Round game at Formby, where another 1-0 defeat was the order of the day. 1985/86 saw Town get within touching distance of the First Round Proper when wins at Colwyn Bay by 3-0, at home to Eastwood Hanley (2-0) and at Leek Town (1-0) took Town to the Fourth Qualifying Round for the first and only time in their history. Morecambe were the opponents and a 1-1 draw was achieved at Christie Park. York City awaited the winners in the First Round but, sadly, Town slipped to a 1-0 home defeat in the replay. The Second Qualifying Round was reached again the following year (Town’s FA Vase winning season) when, having thumped Heanor Town 6-0, Armthorpe Welfare were the winners in another Hoghton Road replay. 1987/88 saw another memorable campaign as Town reached the Third Qualifying Round, going out 2-3 at Northwich Victoria, having seen off Ilkeston after two replays and Horwich RMI after another drawn game. The last two decades have seen only modest progress by Town in the premier knock-out competition. On only 4 occasions since 1987 have St. Helens reached the Second Qualifying Round and every time the club has been beaten. In 1993/94, there was a 2-1 defeat at Knowsley United, Ryhope CA won 2-1 in 1997/98, Droylsden 6-0 in 1998/99 and, most recently, in 2005/06, having defeated Crook Town 3-0 in the Preliminary Round and Northallerton Town 3-2 away after a 3-3 home draw, Alfreton Town were 2-0 winners at Knowsley Road. Town are pictured opposite as part of the BBCs Road to Wembley when Everton’s Dave Watson came to Hoghton Road with the famous trophy prior to Town’s tie with Bootle. Last season, Town slipped to a disappointing 0-2 home defeat to bottom club Atherton LR in the Extra Preliminary Round at Edge Green Street. The previous season, they went out after extra time in a Preliminary Round replay at Glossop, the drawn game proving to be Town’s last ever at Knowsley Road (pictured right), having overcome Nostell Miners Welfare in a penalty shoot out after extra time could not split the teams in the home replay. Two seasons ago, Town made the First Qualifying Round, beating Parkgate 3-1 and then Colwyn Bay 4-2 in a famous victory at Llanelian Road, before falling 1-3 to Cammell Laird. GLYN JONES

30 Years Ago - Where Were You in ‘82?
On the eve of the League's 30th anniversary season, we are launching a search to compile a list of everyone who was involved in the NWCFL in some capacity both in 1982-83 and this coming season. There are many people around the league who can claim "I was there" in 1982 - but who are these people? What were they doing then and what are they doing now? Today we begin the hunt to try and find out. With everyone's help, the aim is to get a list together of every person holding an official position at a club or with the NWCFL this season, who was also involved in some way with the league when it all began in 1982. It's obviously a job that relies on contributions from all around the league, especially from anyone at those clubs who were founder members. The criteria is simple - if you were involved in the league as a player, manager or an official in some capacity in 1982-83 and are still involved in 2012-13, or you know someone who fits the bill, we want to know about it. We want to highlight the many unsung long serving heroes around the league, and hear their memories of the early days. As a start point, we show below those individuals who are listed in positions of office in the new league handbook for 2012-13, who are also named in the handbook for the 1982-83 season. If you know of anyone who should be mentioned, e-mail the details to ian.templeman@nwcfl.com NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

St Helens Town v AFC Liverpool . . . Tuesday 7th August 2012 - NWCFL Premier Division St Helens Town 2-1 AFC Liverpool St Helens Town recorded back to back league victories for the first time since August last year with another battling performance against local rivals AFC Liverpool. The hosts got off to an excellent start as they pinned their visitors back with wave after wave of attack. Ash Rimmer beat his full back on the left wing and centred towards Ste Edwards but the cross just evaded the striker before looking to fall kindly to Carl Osman on the far post but the ball slithered through his legs and the chance was lost. Further pressure culminated in the hosts taking the lead after 13 minutes. A corner from the left was sent into the box by Rimmer and turned back into the danger area by Chris Burke the visiting stopper got a touch but could only claw the ball out to Lee Crompton and he fired the ball home from 10 yards out. Town were flying and looking to add to their lead Osman released Edwards with a fine through ball and his effort was stopped by a fine sliding challenge from Darren Torpey. Midway through the half right back Andy Mawdsley went on a foray forward that nearly ended with the hosts doubling their lead, he got to the edge of the box but his effort was turned around the post by Carl Williams. Around the half hour mark the visitors came more into the contest as an attacking threat Lee Madin linked with John Lawless on the edge of the area but the attack was halted by a fine challenge from Burke. A short corner saw Daniel Wilkinson link with Lawless and his dangerous cross was turned behind by Town custodian Dale Newbrook. Moments later Lawless again threatened this time his volley on the turn from the edge of the box sailed harmlessly over the bar. The period of pressure end with AFC levelling as Wilkinson’s long diagonal ball picked out Francis Barry on the left wing and his effort from the corner of the box stuck the inside of the left hand upright before finding the net to send the sides in level at the interval. The hosts came out of the blocks quickly at the start of the second half and seconds after the restart the visiting stopper had to make a close range save from Edwards and from the resultant corner Rimmer delivered and Edwards slotted home on the far post to put Town back in the lead. Just before the hour mark Madin found space on the left flank before getting into the Town box and squaring to Muktar Mahama on the right NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

. . . Match Report and Photos of the area but his effort was tipped over by Newbrook. Liverpool were reduced to ten men when skipper Steven Williams was dismissed for foul and abusive language to the referee but this did not appear to deter them as they continued to press for the equaliser. As the visitors poured forward in numbers the game became stretched and Town were always likely to catch AFC on the counter. This happened with ten minutes of normal time remaining as Rimmer looked to be clear of Adam Waterhouse but was crudely scythed down and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Edwards stepped up but his effort was saved by Williams away to his right and the loose ball was cleared. Edwards almost made amends for his miss straight away as Scott McNair won the ball in midfield before threading the ball through to the striker whose effort beat the keeper but went just wide of the left hand post. The last chance of normal time fell to the visitors as Stephen Groves got down the right and he played in Lawless whose effort went wide of the right hand upright. As we ventured into added on time Rimmer threatened again his effort flashing just wide of the left hand post before he was again crudely taken down this time just outside the box and Andy Newcombe’s resulting free kick went just over the bar. In the eighth and final minute of added on time Town almost added a third when a free kick was sent in from the left by Rimmer and Sykes-Wright’s header was finding the bottom corner but was cleared off the line by Jack Sinnott. North West Counties Club News . . . New Sponsorship Deal for Road
Maine Road FC have agreed a sponsorship deal with sports kit suppliers SKkits. As part of the deal the firm will be supplying the club's tracksuits and rain jackets, meaning that Maine Road will be turned out in SKkits own range, advertising the local brand throughout the league and continuing their links with the NWCFL. SKkits will also appear in the club's match day programme ensuring maximum visibility of the SKkits brand. Road's Joint Manager Chris Thomas said: "After a number of deals had fallen through for the Tracksuit and Jacket sponsorship, Ian Senior of SKkits stepped in to the breach. "The deal with SKkits is extremely important to the club, and this coming season we hope to be as impressive on the pitch as we will now be off it. The support of SKkits has taken us a big step along that journey".
A good start for West
A three year plan to reach the NWCFL came to fruition for West Didsbury and Chorlton on Saturday, when they hosted Formby in their opening Division One fixture. Playing in sunny weather and in front of a crowd of just over 100, including ground hoppers from London, Nottingham, Birmingham, Blackpool, Stafford and closer to home, Stockport, the home club were looking to impress, and after Formby took a two goal lead West staged an impressive figtback. Liam Beckford, returning to the club after some years at Maine Road, opened the club's account in the NWCFL on 52 minutes and then on 85 minutes, long serving target man Tommy Walsh brought the score back to 2-2. Sadly for West, in the 5th minute of added time, Formby snatched a late winner when centre back MichaelWhite was on hand to turn home a free kick from 6 yards. None the less, club Press Officer Simon O'Neill said everyone at the club felt they had made a promising start to their inaugural season in the NWCFL. "The West management team started with the backbone of the squad of players who have been with the club during their Manchester League days, strengthened with some recent signings with NWCFL experience. “The game overall highlighted what West need to compete at this level in taking chances, clinically and eliminating the mistakes that will be harshly punished. Despite the score, we won several new friends during the day with the many ground hoppers and fans in an encouraging crowd of 108 commenting favourably on the quality of the hospitality, clubhouse fare and match day programme". Wests were one of Town’s pre-season friendly opposition with Joe Jennings pictured above in action. NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

North West Counties Club News . . . New sponsors for The Blues
Winsford United have announced that Winsford Town Council will be the club’s main sponsors for this season. Under the deal – which was supported by the local Cheshire West and Chester Councillors - the Town Council will sponsor the club’s shirts for the coming season. In presenting the sponsorship cheque the Town Mayor, Councillor Steve Smith, said: ‘The Town Council is delighted to be supporting Winsford United. The team represents our town over a wide radius and the players act as local ambassadors every time they play away matches. "The Council and the club look forward to developing a close working relationship in the future". Echoing these sentiments, Winsford United Club Secretary Bob Astles added: "The news of the sponsorship offer by Winsford Town Council has come as a tremendous boost to the small band of people who keep Winsford United running. "These are difficult times for Non-League football so it is most encouraging to find our local politicians have confidence in us and what we are trying to achieve. “Hopefully this will be the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship for both sides and the football club will do their very best to spread the name of Winsford far and wide". Pictured above left to right on completion of the deal are Alan Warburton (Winsford Town Councillor), Mark Loveless (Winsford United Chairman), Councillor Steve Smith (Mayor of Winsford), Kevin Bircumshaw (Winsford United Assistant Manager in the new sponsored shirt), and Bob Astles (Winsford United Club Secretary).
