Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Abbey Hey. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been a eleven weeks since we were last in action here at Brocstedes Park as we fell to a disappointing 2-0 reserve as the hands of a resurgent Winsford United side, who became the first side to record two victories over Town this term. The year of 2013 ended with a postponement as the Boxing Day game against landlords Ashton Athletic fell foul of the weather and this rescheduled game will take place here on Tuesday weather permitting! The first game of 2014 was called off after a break into the clubhouse here at Brocstedes Park and we finally got back into action the following week after a three week lay off with the challenging trip to title contenders Norton United. Despite the heavy pitch we got off to an excellent start as a fine following move culminated in Ed Richardson firing home from the left of the box to open his account for the club. Andy Mawdsley then header just over the bar from a set piece and somewhat against the run of play the hosts levelled. The teams went in level at the break and in the second half Norton pressed forward to try and take all three points in their pursuit of Runcorn Linnets at the top of the table. A combination of some solid defending and a slice of luck or two saw Town hold out until the 80th minute when the hosts took the lead for the first time in the contest and the magnitude of their celebrations showed their relief at finally break the stubborn Town resistance. The visitors had a couple of chances to level matters in the remaining minutes as leading marksman Andy Gillespie shot just over the bar from the edge of the box and debutant Jamil Saleh forced the home stopper to tip over but the hosts held on and whilst the result wasn’t what Town wanted the performance was very encouraging. After another enforced break we finally got back into midweek action with the trip to Congleton and a contest which the weather was to have a large hand in. A strong wind coupled with a difficult pitch gave the feeling was that one goal was probably going to settle the contest and indeed it proved to be the case as the hosts netted just before the interval and despite plenty of second half pressure from the visitors it was not to be. On 15th February we had a game thanks to the 4G surface at Stockport Sports and the pitch suited our play with early pressure culminating in Nathan Parish netting after a good move from the visitors. The second half saw Stockport get back in the game and net from a set piece as the sides shared the spoils. We then had another fortnight break after the game at Bacup saw a waterlogged surface and the less said about last Saturday’s 7-0 reserve at the hands of Colne the better. We must look to quickly put the previous encounter behind us as we look to secure our first win of the year. Abbey Hey have had a mixed bag of recent results drawing at Robin Park Arena with Wigan last Saturday having knocked high flying Bootle out of the League Cup the previous weekend with a fine 1-0 victory at the Delta Taxi Stadium. Prior to this they hadn’t won for eight matches. We need to improve all over the park from last weekend if we hope to gain a return from this afternoon’s contest with a side who would leap frog us with a victory. In Town Today . . . Abbey Hey FC were formed in 1902 in the Abbey Hey district of Gorton, some three miles away from the centre of Manchester. During their formative years and through the two World Wars, the club was disbanded and reformed on a number of occasions. Starting in the Church Sunday Leagues, they progressed through the Manchester Amateur Leagues during the intervening years but the club really came into it's own in the 1960s after it took in the players of the Admiralty Gunning Engineering Department (AGED) following it's closure. The club won numerous honours culminating in 1978 with the club deciding to apply for a position in the Manchester League. The application was successful and the following year the club began playing in the 2nd Division of the Manchester League, achieving promotion in their first season. Reaching this position meant that the club had to find an enclosed ground suitable for playing their home games. The nearest ground available at the time was in Chorlton at Werburghs Road. The ground was owned by a car dealership (Lookers) but was being used by a local school. It was agreed that if Abbey Hey FC carried out some improvements, such as installing showers in the dressing rooms, they could rent the ground. After two years, Lookers reneged on the deal and the club was forced out, this time to a ground nearer home at Godfreys. The next eighteen years were fairly successful with the club winning the Gilchrist Cup under Managers Jim Whittaker and Dave Denby and a League title but this ended when Abbey Hey FC were told that as from the start of the new season they would not be allowed to use Godfreys. A temporary home, at the old English Steel ground, was arranged on a season to season basis with the owners at theme, Clayton Analine but after only 2 years, the ground was sold to a local builder who required the land to build houses on. During the two years the club were based at the ground, negotiations with Crossley Motors Ltd had been taking place to buy a disused ground they owned in Goredale Avenue, Gorton. Unfortunately, the land was not in good order and was becoming an eyesore with fences falling down and people using it for flytipping. Contractors working for the council had tipped 1,000 tons of hardcore onto the car park to prevent access to the ground. Matters had reached an impasse between Abbey Hey FC and Crossleys when Manchester City Council stepped in, They informed Crossleys that if an agreement was not made with the people that they were dealing with, the ground would be the subject of a compulsory purchase order. This tipped the scales in favour of the football club who were asked to make an offer for the ground which was promptly accepted. Legal representation and a bank loan were quickly arranged and in 1984 the club at last had their own home. Jim Clark was to join during these turbulent times as manager, a position he was to occupy for the next 18 years. The club went on to gain success in the Manchester League during the late eighties and early nineties, winning the Premier Division Championship on five occasions during this period. In 1997, after finishing 2nd in the Manchester Premier Division, the club applied for membership of The North West Counties League. Following a ground grading visit by League Officials, the club was accepted into the 2nd Division for the 1998 season. Abbey Hey's first season in the North West Counties League couldn't have been more exciting. Although Fleetwood Freeport had taken the Division Two title, the runners-up place was still to be decided. On the last Saturday of the season any one of three clubs could have taken second

. . . Abbey Hey Football Club place, but it was Abbey's 3-2 win at Darwen that clinched promotion to Division One in their first season in the league. Promotion to the 1st Division meant that the club had to install floodlights. True to form, they designed, ordered, erected and wired them within a couple of months. The biggest job during the ground improvements was the building of the new clubhouse and dressing rooms. Planning permission was given with the majority of work once again being carried out by the clubs own members. To finance this project, low interest loans were taken out from The FA with the remainder of the money achieved through fund raising schemes. In more recent years the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth policy started to pay quick dividends as the team made an excellent start to the 2011-12 league season, remaining in the top four of Division One from day one. Though a run of poor results saw them exit the NWCFL Challenge Cup, FA Vase and 1st Division Trophy they did take the notable scalp of Evo Stik North team Radcliffe Borough in the first round of the Manchester Cup. The season really stepped up a gear as they moved into 2012 with Abbey at one point pushing Wigan Robin Park and Norton United for one of the two promotion places. Though they were to ultimately finish in 3rd place, the season had been an undoubted success as Walker had built a promotion challenging team in just 2 seasons. Last seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaign started better than anyone at the club could have imagined as the team went unbeaten in the league for the first 3 months. Although unsuccessful in the FA vase, they would eventually reach the latter stages of the FA Cup qualifiers and a plum tie at FC Halifax via fantastic wins at St Helens Town and Sheffield. Rarely stepping out of the top two in Division One, Abbey continued to rack up league wins whilst also moving thru the Challenge Cup, Div One Trophy and Manchester Premier Cup rounds. The first team success was also matched by the newly introduced youth team set up. Both Under 17s and 18s topped their respective Youth Alliance Divisions during the year and impressed many with their style of play and application. As the months progressed a few of the older youth players started to appear in the first team, boding well for the future. Come April and a win at Northwich Villa eventually sealed promotion back into the top flight of the NWCFL ladder.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Abbey Hey FC. First of all may I thank and welcome today’s Executive Match Sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool and especially General Manager Gareth Shone who continues been extremely supportive of the club this season. We also thank today’s Match Ball sponsors Scuffs N Scratches for their support. Today is our first home game for 11 weeks since then we’ve continued our erratic form which culminated in last Saturday’s 7-0 defeat at Colne. While our hosts played well we did conspire towards our own downfall and if we are going to get something from today’s encounter we will need to be much better across the park. Abbey Hey are unbeaten in the last three games with a win at Bootle (0-1) sandwiched between draws against Barnoldswick Town and Wigan Robin Park. We ‘ve used today’s programme to catch up on a few Town news items from recent weeks so apologies if one or two pieces are a little dated. Congratulations to Lee Crompton who picked up the Player of the Month award for Nov/Dec. Our congratulations also go to the Town Youth team who defeated Rainhill Town U18s 1-3 recently to reach the final of the Liverpool County FA Youth Cup. Goals from Ben McKenna (2) and Tyler Kilbride saw the youngsters through to meet Skelmersdale United Youth in the final on the 1st May 2014. Colne v Town Report . . . Saturday 1st March 2014 Colne 7-0 St Helens Town North West Counties League Premier Division St. Helens Town were beaten 7-0 at Colne last Saturday, in their heaviest defeat of the season and they could, in reality, have no complaints. Back on 7th December, it was Colne who had ended Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unbeaten run of 14 league games and since then, five matches had been played, producing one draw and four defeats, three by the odd goal, so nobody really foresaw this heavy reverse coming. Indeed, in recent years, but for a 6-1 end of season reverse three years ago, Town had left the Holt House ground winners four times in the last five seasons. Despite having the benefit of the slope in the first half, Town began badly and were two goals down after 11 minutes, Tom Berwick netting easily through poor defence. Thereafter, however, St. Helens fought back well and had chances of their own in the remaining 34 minutes, Andy Gillespie looked a real handful for the home defenders, well supported by Tom Lightbody. Lightbody had the first chance for the visitors on 18 minutes. He broke through several tackles only for his looping shot to hit the top of the bar with goalkeeper Chris Thompson beaten. Two minutes later, from a free kick, Town went close again and the ball was scrambled gratefully over his own bar by Marc Young and, from the resulting corner, captain Lee Crompton had a goal-bound shot blocked at the far post. On 28 minutes, Ciaran Gibson saved well from the advancing Berwick, seeking his hat-trick for the home side and after that both sides cancelled each other out as the interval approached. Then, right on half-time, came the move which effectively ended the match as a contest. The Town back line, moving up as one, carelessly let centre-forward Jason Hart through on goal from a well-placed pass and, although Gibson came out of his goal to try to smother the ball, Hart was just too quick and calmly poked the ball into the empty net. The second half was always going to be difficult for Town. Nathan Parish blasted over the bar when, with his usual composure, he might have scored and shortly afterwards, Lightbody hit narrowly wide, on 56 minutes. Colne, however, soon established complete control. Twice in quick succession, substitute Mark Coyne went through the paperthin Town defence down the right channel and fired home past Gibson for carbon-copy goals in the 60th and 73rd minutes, either side of Berwickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third and it was Coyne who sealed his own hat-trick with an easy finish five minutes from time.

NWCF League News . . . Player of the Month Awards Premier Division Michael Burke of Runcorn Linnets In a month when the weather got the better of many fixtures, Runcorn Linnets managed to play just four games and defender Mike Burke not only started in all of these, but also continued to play a significant part in the Linnets’ success. First up in February was a 3-0 defeat of Squires Gate at The Millbank Linnets Stadium. Although the ball must have proved difficult for defenders to judge particularly in the air - in such a high wind, Burke was as always a towering presence in Runcorn’s rearguard, showing the all-round qualities which have made him such a reliable ever-present in Joey Dunn’s team this season. A tough Cheshire Senior Cup tie against Conference side Hyde FC came next. Although four leagues separated the teams, Burke did not look out of place in such company and while the visitors ran out 1-0 winners they were given a fright by their hosts with Burke outstanding on the night. The Linnets had to wait 18 days before their next game at Alsager in the League Challenge Cup. A tight game again saw Burke dominant at the heart of the defence, ensuring that the Cup holders only needed a solitary goal to move into the quarter-finals. Only the second league game of the month saw the Linnets off-colour against a lively Congleton team at the Millbank Linnets Stadium, but despite not performing at their best, Burke remained steadfast alongside skipper Mike Tomlinson in the middle of defence. Congleton needed a penalty to finally break Runcorn down and earn a point. In a season which has been stop-start since the turn of the year, Burke’s presence and dominant form on the field have been instrumental in ensuring that the team are right in the mix at the business end of the season in both the League and Cup. Goalkeeper of the Month Awards Premier Division Martin Pearson of Congleton Town With the Bears unbeaten in their three February matches, much was relied on their defences as their forwards struggled to score more than one goal per game. So with only two goals conceded in five hours of play, the Bears were grateful to 'keeper Martin Pearson whenever the opposition did get through. In the win against St Helens Town, he brought of a couple of fine saves and showed a command of his area from set pieces that was to be a constant throughout the month. Against Ashton Athletic in the League Challenge Cup, he was beaten from a counter attack with an accurate shot inside the post, but all other tests were dealt with during the two hour game with an assurance that built confidence in his defensive colleagues. The final test was against a free scoring Runcorn Linnets side, and he was beaten just the once, strangely by a shot that was a bit mis-hit, whereas shots struck firmly were saved.

Town welcome back a hero . . Town welcome back a hero St. Helens Town renewed acquaintances with a player from the club’s distant past when 87-year old Ray Welding paid a visit to Brocstedes Park for the Colne game on 7th December. “Rammy”, as he was known locally, was a former team mate of Town and Manchester City legend Bert Trautmann, and he played the second half of the 1948/49 season at the club’s former ground, Hoghton Road. Ray told club historian Glyn Jones that he remembers the day Bert Trautmann was sent off in the local derby at U.G.B. Former German prisoner of war Bert was subjected to terrible taunts by sections of the home crowd and one U.G.B. player in particular and the normally mild-mannered German lost his temper, retaliated and was dismissed for the only time in his career. Rammy himself deputised in goal, but it was not a happy event, as Town went down 7-1 to the Bobby’s Lane side. He also remembers well how heavy the ball would get on the heavy, wet pitches in those days. The laces on the ball had to be tied together and, in one match, he managed to head the knot in the laces and he was so badly concussed that during the second half, he had forgotten the score and found himself playing in the wrong direction. A former player with Newton YMCA, Ray turned out against his former club in back to back games for Town in March 1949, having made a goal-scoring debut in the match against Haydock C & B on 12th March that year. He was the hero of the George Mahon Cup semifinal, scoring both Town goals against Burscough, which took St. Helens through to the Final, where they beat Runcorn Reserves at Hope Street, Prescot before a crowd of 9000 on 7th May 1949, the club’s first trophy success in only their second season. Later on the same day, Town travelled to face Orrell in their final league game and nine of the team who had played in the final earlier that day turned out again. However, there is a twist in the tale, as although the records show R. Welding played in both games, it was actually his brother Ron, who was not officially signed on with Town, who played in the Orrell fixture. The only other team change saw club secretary George Fryer take over from Jackie Hughes. Rammy played 16 games for St. Helens, netting 19 goals. In back-to-back rough-house derby matches against Prescot BI in April 1949, he came in for some heavy treatment and had to come off injured in both games, the last time having to go to hospital for attention. After leaving Town at the end of that season, Ray was signed by Matt Busby to play for Manchester United. He was an apprentice on the railways at the time, working 44 hours a week, including Saturday mornings and it was difficult to get to Manchester for matches. He appeared in a number of “A” team games at The Cliff, but faced with the choice of permanent full-time work, or the possibility of a career in football, heart had to bow to head and he drifted out of the game, despite a number of offers from a variety of club scouts. Ray (pictured) enjoyed the Colne game, despite the result and returned for our last home match against Winsford United.

A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place publicaccess AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. Sunday 16th February 2014 Liverpool County FA Sunday Youth Cup Semi-finals Rainhill Town U18s 1-3 Town Youth A much changed Town Youth side lined up to face Rainhill Town in the Liverpool County u18 Sunday Youth Cup semi final on a very impressive 4G facility at Rainhill High School for an early 11.45 kick off with numerous players missing through being cup tied, injured and holidays. The game however saw welcome returns to action for James Bradbury after a three month lay off following injury and also Tyler Kilbride back after a two month lay off. Town settled very quickly into a new line up and started off very brightly with a couple of early half chances falling to Matty Maddox down the left and with Ben McKenna always looking dangerous exploiting space down the centre and Connor Sanderson always threatening down left it seemed only a matter of time before Town went ahead. A long range Jack Dougherty strike flew just over the bar, Connor Sanderson struck a blistering half volley just wide and crashed another effort against the bar with Ben just failing to convert the follow up a goal seemed inevitable. The opening goal finally came on 28 minutes after a mazy Ben McKenna dribble through the centre of the Rainhill defence - a great goal. The second goal followed 9 minutes later with Tyler climbing above the Rainhill defence at the far post to head home and give Town a 2-0 lead at half time. Town had generally looked very assured defensively throughout first half with goalkeeper Rory looking in top class form. Mark McBain slotting in alongside Tyler in the centre of defence and full backs Henry Shaw and Jack Dougherty doing solid jobs out wide. Second half saw Rainhill switch formation and they quickly got very much on top with Town pinned back for long periods as they repulsed attack after attack. Defensive midfield players James and Kieron were now working full out to protect the back four and Town were restricted to occasional counter attacks but with goalkeeper Rory looking in unbeatable form you felt it would take something very special for Rainhill to break through despite their domination. However, Town went three ahead after 67 minutes after another amazing Ben McKenna run when he slotted home after running half the length of the pitch beating player after player - an unbelievable goal fit to win any game.

LCFA U18s Semi Final To Rainhill's great credit they never gave up and continued to press forward and were rewarded with a consolation goal with six minutes to go after a free kick from the right was headed in. The final score of 3-1 was probably a little harsh on Rainhill who raised their game second half but Town to be fair should have made more of their first half superiority. Man of the Match for Town: Ben McKenna for 2 great goals Town Youth will now contest the final with our old friends Skelmersdale United Youth, who triumphed over Marine 6-5 in the other semi final, at the County FA ground on 1st May which should be a great occasion for everybody concerned. St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought Combination Championship Trophy pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured from Wesley Bridge in 1972 below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Managers 1946-Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 200607 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 201213 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Town Club News . . . Town's 1st team squad has recently had the benefits of training in 34 degrees heat at altitude! No, Andy Mawdsley wasn't packing his collection of bad taste vests for a warm weather training camp; instead the lads have been training at Liverpool John Moores University, which has included some gruelling bike sessions in a state of the art Altitude chamber! The workouts are supervised by Town's right back Sam Pullinger, who is a Sport and Exercise Physiologist currently completing his PhD at the University. Sam, having completed his BSc and Masters Degrees at LMJU, has also worked with a number of clubs including Blackburn Rovers FC and St Helens Rugby League club. Supporting Sam throughout the sessions was Raj Firhad, a Strength and Conditioning specialist who coached the Laos national team in 2009, and is currently completing his PhD whilst also working with players from Liverpool FC as they recover from injury. Manager Ian Price explained, ‘We wanted to do some extra fitness work and keep the lads in shape over Christmas, but as the bad weather has taken over we've been able to maintain fitness levels thanks to the football specific programme put together by Sam and Raj. ‘The boys have worked really hard, but the biggest achievement was Jonesy [Assistant Manager Paul Jones] doing three back to back sessions in the chamber. It was only when Judgey told him his lips were going blue he realised he'd been in there for 45 minutes! ‘The lads are really grateful to Sam and Raj for the time they have given up, for sharing their expert knowledge and giving us access to top class facilities that ordinarily we wouldn't be able to dream of using.’ As well as the sessions in the Altitude Chamber, the team has undertaken core and strength circuits, football-specific repeated sprints and cardiovascular work. Each of these elements are vital for players, whatever level they play at. The coaching from two top Sport and Exercise Physiologists will help our players compete with the ever increasing demands of the game . . . as well as ensuring players stay fit when games are postponed due to bad weather!!

St Helens Town News . . . St Helens Town is delighted to announce the appointment of Alan Wellens a s Club P resident. Following the loss of Bert Trautmann and Bill Foulkes this year club officials had no hesitation in inviting Alan to take up the honorary position with immediate effect. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, “We lost two club legends with the passing of Bert and Bill this year. Bill had been club President since 2001 while Bert had rekindled his association with Town more recently, joining Bill as President in 2007. “The club felt it was an opportunity to recognise the important role Alan has played in the history of the club as a player and manager.” He added, “I wrote to Alan following our last committee meeting and I was delighted when he rang me to confirm his acceptance of the position and we are planning to meet up in the New Year.” Alan (pictured above in 1979, back row 3rd left) has a unique place in the club’s history - he holds the record for the most appearances in Town colours; was captain of the 1971-72 Lancashire Combination winning team and masterminded the club’s FA Vase success in 1987. Alan was honoured by St Helens Town as one seven ‘Elite’ players of the decades (1970s) since the club’s reformation in 1946. As a local boy in his mid-teens Alan made his St Helens Town debut at Great Harwood in 1966 alongside Jackie Atherton who as skipper made sure that the youngster ‘came to no harm’. Little did anyone realise that Alan would eventually succeed his mentor and become the first Town skipper to lift a trophy for over twenty years when he collected the Lancashire Football Combination Championship cup off Wesley Bridge in 1972 (pictured). Though he featured intermittently at first under boss Jimmy McKiernan, his Town playing career spanned the years 1966 to 1981 with just a brief season and a half at Darwen intervening in the 1970’s. Though records for the early part of this period are sketchy there is no doubt that Alan holds the record for St Helens Town appearances estimated at five hundred plus and he never gave less than one hundred per cent in any of them. Under his leadership Town also won the Watson Trophy and the Bass Charrington Cup in 1974, although he missed the final of the latter due to injury as his team-mates beat Darwen 4-3 thriller played at Burscough. That particular side was prolific indeed that year scoring 107 goals with Jackie Kendrick setting a club record of 46 goals which still stands to this day and though Alan Wellens’ job at right back was to defend, he did manage to get forward enough to bag a couple himself. In season 1975-76 Alan skippered Town in their new challenge in the Cheshire County League where he completed his playing career including the brief spell at Darwen. Sadly his playing days ended when back with Town he broke his leg in a league fixture against Hyde United at Hoghton in 1981 but having recovered, he took over the management of the team and took us to our most glorious day when winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987.

Stockport Sports . . . St Helens Town picked up their first point of 2014 with a battling 1-1 draw at Lambeth Grove home of Stockport Sports. Town dominated the opening half and were unlucky to only be one goal to the good at the interval. The visitors front line came to life after a quarter of an hour when top scorer Andy Gillespie did well on the left wing where he beat a defender before cutting inside and squaring his centre was half cleared and broke to Jamil Saleh but he was crowded out. The next chance saw a quick throw on the right find Gillespie just inside the area and he turned his defender before firing into the side netting with options in the middle. The deadlock was broken on 23 minutes when Tom Lightbody linked with Nathan Parish who outmuscled his defender Jamie Street and directed the ball home into the top corner on the stretch. Moments later Gillespie could have doubled the visitors advantage when a blocked effort broke to him but his well executed volley was well blocked by a defender and from the resultant corner Dan Wright headed over the bar. Stockport had a couple of chances prior to the break Paul Walley had an effort which was blocked by Jake Kenny and the loose ball was collected by Ciaran Gibson in the Town goal. Gibson had the crossbar to thank just before the break as Ben Halfacre unleashed an effort from 30 yards that beat the keeper but thundered off the frame of the goal and cleared away from danger to send the visitors in a goal to the good. If Town had dominated the first half Stockport took the advantage in the second period. Less than a minute after the restart Halfacre had an effort from the edge of the box tipped over by Gibson. Just prior to the hour mark a swift counter attack saw Lightbody, Connor Sanderson and Jake Kenny link up on the right with the latter playing in Gillespie whose shot across the face of goal went just wide of the left hand post. Sports levelled on 67 minutes when a free kick from the right wing inside their own half was well delivered by Tom Bane and a free header centrally which found the bottom right hand corner of the net. Another dangerous attack saw Julian Wareing's shot deflected and Gibson was able to collect the effort. Next up Walley sent a ball into the box from the right wing and it was caught by the wind almost taking it into the next but a well placed Kenny was able to clear the ball off the line.

. . . Match report & photos The final ten minutes of the contest saw Town come back into the game with Gillespie being released by Connor Naughton and his effort was parried by the home stopper. Gillespie was having a mini battle with Liam Higginbottom in the home goal as he was beaten to a through ball by the home stopper who pumped the ball away from danger. With time running out Parish advanced centrally and played the ball out to Ed Richardson on the left and his cross was diverted over the bar by a defender on the front post and the spoils were shared.
