Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Alsager Town. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at Edge Green Street, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. We are in the middle of a run of four matches here at Edge Green Street three at “home” and one away on Tuesday when we “visit” landlords Ashton Town in a Liverpool Senior Cup, First Round tie. Before we welcome AFC Blackpool in a League Challenge Cup 2nd Round Tie. Last Saturday saw us exit the FA Vase in dramatic and disappointing style as we went down 4-2 to our NCEL, Premier Division visitors after extra time. We took the lead much against the run of play on 36 minutes after a touch of pinball in the visitors box the ball deflected home off Kieran Hoult. The visitors got themselves level five minutes later when top scorer Nathan Forbes-Swindells fired a free kick home and soon after the restart Town again took the lead after another corner saw Lee Crompton adjudged to have pulled back and from the resultant spot kick with Andy Newcombe confidently slotting home from 12 yards and that looked to be enough for the hosts to book their place in the hat for the Second Round. This was not going to be the case however as deep in added on time, the fifth minute to be exact Parkgate won a corner and from the set piece all eleven visiting players filled the box and a half clearance broke to Daniel Patterson who arrowed an effort home to take to tie into an extra half hour. In the extra two periods Town looked deflated after the smash and grab and conceded soon after the restart with Forbes-Swindells netting a fine solo effort and in the second period Keir Hannity blocked a clearance home seal the victory for the Yorkshire outfit. This afternoons visitors have been in decent form recently having won three of their last five matches including victories over local rivals Norton and Stone. Ian and the lads will be keen to get back on the park this afternoon and hopefully make amends for Saturday’s disappointment. Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller NWCFL Premier Division Season 20112011-12 Programme of the Year

In Town Today - Alsager Town . . . The merger of Alsager Institute and Alsager United formed Alsager AFC in 1965. The merger came about due to the lack of pitches in the village. They acquired the Wood Park facility in 1967,that was then seeded ready for the following season, where it was first played on in 1968/69. Alsager AFC was playing in the Crewe league at this stage. In the early ‘70’s the club decided they would like to try for the Mid Cheshire League which they were successful in doing by bringing the ground up to a higher standard. They remained in this league until 1985/86 when they were runners-up. Alsager AFC then closed for a season due to lack of funds and support. They then re-opened with a youth side, remaining in the Crewe Premier League for two seasons. In 1991/92 they managed to regain entry into the Mid Cheshire League Division Two, where they remained until 1998/99 when the committee decided to try for the Springbank Vending League, as most of the team were potteries based. Steve Booth who built a strong squad, which was able to challenge for the title in the first season, managed the team at this stage. Unfortunately Alsager were pipped at the post, when Norton FC needing to win their last five games, did so and took the title with Alsager AFC finishing runners-up. Before all this had unfolded in the league, the team were doing well enough by the Christmas of 1998 that the committee decided that they would apply for the North West Counties League. After a lot of hard work by the committee, Alsager AFC successfully passed the criteria necessary to gain entry and a second place in the league was enough to gain promotion. Alsager’s first season in the football pyramid system got off to a great start as early form took them to the top of the league well into September. Good cup runs also followed with Alsager reaching the semi-final of the NWCFL Second Division Trophy, where they were beaten over two legs by Tetley Walker and they also reached the quarter-finals of the NWCFL Cup, where they forced first division title contenders Mossley to a replay. Bad form after Christmas 1999 and the decision by manager Steve Booth to leave the club saw a new management team step into the fold. Greg Clowes and Dorrian Garner – who was already a player at the club – joined from Norton FC. last years conquerors. They were in charge for the last 10 games of the season and managed to steady the ship and gain Alsager a creditable 12th spot in their first season. Greg and Dorrian’s first full season in charge got off to a shaky start, as results didn’t go their way. After a few changes to the playing staff things started to turn around and a good run of results from the start of December until the end of the season saw Alsager finish 7th. For the final six months of the season Alsager were always in the top three form teams and along with Warrington Town kept the most clean sheets. Progress to the grounds facilities with the addition of floodlights in August 2001, a new stand planned for the far side and with the majority of the team resigned, Greg and Dorrian were hoping to make a better start and promotion was a real prospect. During the summer 2001 it was decided that the team name would change back to its original name of Alsager Town FC whilst also running a team under the name of Alsager AFC in the Staffordshire Springbank Vending League. A great season in 2001/02 and with Stand unable to gain promotion due to their ground grading results, Alsager got promotion and enjoyed a good first season in the first division. Season 2002/2003 saw Alsager finish 11th, followed by 2003/2004 when the restructuring of the pyramid system was introduced and a chance to get promotion to Unibond. These hopes were dashed however with a “misunderstanding” of the rules of the grading criteria and a finishing place of 9th with the best defensive record in the division. The 2004/5 season saw Alsager finish in their highest league position ever with a 7th place finish in Division One. Alsager finished on 68 points in 3rd place. Alsager made that extra step the following season and finished in 3rd position which was enough to secure promotion as the UniBond League expanded again. The club had a creditable start to life at the next level and finished 14th in the 24 team league. The UniBond League expanded to introduce two division one’s (North & South) and the Bullets were placed in the Southern division for the 2007/8 season On the field they had another mid-table finish but were relegated because they failed to meet NWCFL Premier Division Season 20112011-12 Programme of the Year

grading requirements. The owners Ansell and Mitchell consequently departed from the club, leaving it with an uncertain future. Former chairman Peter Clegg returned to the club to re-take the helm. His intention was to run the club for the community. Before the start of the 2008/9 season Alsager Town appointed former Witton Albion reserves coach, Neil Gill as manager of the First Team. The Bullets had a difficult start to the season but recovered to finish in an excellent seventh position despite much turmoil both on and off the pitch. The 2009/10 season saw the Bullets find life difficult again and they spent much of the season at the wrong end of the table fighting to stay in the Premier Division eventually finishing in 18th position. Another season of turmoil was to befall the club as they started off with an opening day home victory over this evenings hosts but this was a false dawn as they spent a lot of time at in the bottom half of the table. Early in 2011 off the field issues raised their heads again as with finances tight the players expenses budget had to be cut and then stopped completely. This lead to the squad, manager and his backroom staff leaving the club as it also became apparent that there would be major changes at the club at the end of the 2010/11 season. Acting Chairman Mike Cross had to Act quickly and Alsager’s remaining committee voted for change. Terry Greer the former Chairman of Biddulph Victoria was elected to be the new Chairman. A new management team and playing staff had to be found. Stepping into the fray were Damian Grocott and Andy O’Connor they began the job of keeping Alsager Town in the N.W.C.F.L. Premier Divison. They worked hard to keep the status of the club secure which they did with three games in hand. For the 2011/12 season the club is looking to move forward with a new committee which was installed at the AGM in May their aim being to improve the club in all aspects on and off the pitch. With things going well off the pitch, new showers had been installed, the dressing rooms and some of the club house re-decorated. The ground in general had been given a face lift when on the night of the Monday 11th July a catastrophic fire destroyed the office and part of the dressing rooms and club house, the whole building had to be demolished due the asbestos it was constructed with and the electricity was cut off due to the damage caused with the switch boxes etc. Since then the committee have worked tirelessly to get things in to place so that football can return to The Town ground. The committee of the N.W.C.F.L. have been superb in the way they have switched fixtures for The Bullets due to their massive problems. The season ended with the Bullets finishing in 13th place with 57 points at end of the season poor run, but it was their best tally of points for some time. After the season ended manager John Brown stepped down and Chairman Terry Greer quickly set on former Kidsgrove Athletic Coach Andy Turner on as manager. Andy retained the previous season backroom staff but added another coach. Most of the 2011/12 season players stayed and Andy added a number of new faces, looking to improve on last seasons position.

A Word from the Dugout . . . Good Afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for today's North West Counties League fixture against Alsager Town. Today's game will be another tough one as we are finding out that there are no easy games in this league so we will have to be at our best to take 3 points today. Last week’s FA Vase game was a game we have learnt a lot from being 2-1 up with literally 12 seconds remaining in the game to lose 42 in extra time was a bitter blow to take. But the lads deserve some credit for the hard work they put into the game Parkgate were a very big physical side and I thought we dealt with there route-one style of football quite well. As I said in last weeks programme notes we are a work in progress and I can see we are improving week by week. The squad is getting stronger and if we keep working hard on the training field and in games I am positive results will start going our way. Don’t forget the club are holding a Sportsman’s Evening in two weeks time (Saturday 3rd November). What should be a great evening at St Helens Cricket Club we have guest speaker Howard Kendall and comedian Frankie Allen. Some tickets are still available at £20 please see any committee member. I hope you all enjoy today's game and have a safe journey home. Ian Granite

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties League Premier Division game against our visitors from Alsager Town. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. I have yet to get over the disappointment of last Saturday’s FA Vase exit! We can have no real complaints of our opponents Parkgate who showed their quality throughout the game and I am sure would have felt hard done to had they not fired home the last gasp equaliser which took the game into extra time. As often happens the team who has battled hard to maintain their lead is so deflated by the late equaliser it was always likely we would find extra time difficult both physically and mentally, and so it proved! I am still surprised with added on time with the match referee saying he stopped his watch every time the ball went out play in the second half there wasn’t any obvious time wasting on our behalf and no injuries to talk of. We have to put last week’s game behind us and continue to learn as the team develops. Today we entertain Alsager Town who have had a solid start to the 2012-13 season and they currently lie in mid-table with 17 points from their 15 league games. Last Saturday saw the ‘Bullets’ record a 2-0 home victory over Stone Dominoes with goals from Sam Aspinall and Legh Skellern. Congratulations must also go to our visitors who have been the recipients of a Football Foundation grant which will see them replace their clubhouse which was gutted by fie last year as well as add new parking at Wood Park. We are back at Edge Green Street on Tuesday evening but this time as visitors! We take on our landlords Ashton Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup in what should be an entertaining affair. Next Saturday sees AFC Blackpool our visitors in the League Challenge Cup 2nd Round. Don’t forget our forthcoming fundraiser is a Sportsman’s Evening at St Helens Cricket Club on Saturday 3rd November. Tickets are £20 with guest speaker Howard Kendall and comedian Frankie Allen, plus a hot pot supper, raffles, auctions, etc. It’s sure to be a great night so don’t miss out contact any club officials for further details Enjoy the game and don’t forget to join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate as well as the presentation of the St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ award. League Challenge Cup Double Football fans will have the opportunity to take in a double dose of NWCFL Challenge Cup action on Saturday 27th October. The tie between AFC Liverpool and Wigan Robin Park will now be played at the Robin Park Arena, as Valerie Park is unavailable. The game will kick off at 1 pm, the reason being that Wigan Athletic are at home to West Ham United next door at the DW Stadium with a 3 pm kick off. Robins’ Secretary Taffy Roberts said: “Bringing the kick off forward will benefit both clubs twofold. Firstly it will help to avoid traffic congestion which will build up before 3 pm, and there is a greater possibility of us having an increased gate, with some spectators deciding to go to both matches”. Once the action at Robin Park is over, supporters can then choose between two further cup ties in Ashton-inMakerfield, both of which are little more than 10 minutes away by car. The first option is at Brocstedes Park, home of Ashton Athletic, who host Bacup Borough or alternatively another couple of minutes further away is Ashton Town’s AM Property Group Stadium in Edge Green Street, where ground tenants St Helens Town take on AFC Blackpool. And of course, with all three games being in the League Challenge Cup there is the possibility of extra time being played at any of the venues, so it could turn out to be a bumper afternoon of cup tie action in the Wigan Borough. The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.
Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Photographs: Above Tommy O’Neil holding aloft the FA Vase in 1987. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue. St Helens Town v Parkgate . . . St. Helens Town’s inexperienced team let victory slip from their grasp in the closing seconds of their FA Vase First Round clash with Yorkshire visitors Parkgate on Saturday. Leading 2-1 against their Northern Counties East rivals from Rotherham, they only had to run the clock down, but were caught deep into injury time when Parkgate equalised with virtually the last kick of the 90 minutes and then went on to lose 4-2 in extra-time. Parkgate were much the better team throughout, physically taller and stronger than the Town side which has been completely re-built this season by incoming manager Ian Granite. They are largely inexperienced, apart from Ste Edwards and Carl Osman, who are both part of the new coaching set-up. Week on week, they are making slow but noticeable progress, learning valuable lessons as they go and, despite this latest defeat, the mood is much more positive than it was last term. Edwards did not start Saturday’s game, his place being taken by Andy Newcombe. Early pressure brought two home corners, but Parkgate responded with a break from Keir Hannity who, capitalising on a mistake from Chris Williams, went on a surging run forward which was ultimately thwarted by a good save from Town keeper Lee Novak, who was outstanding throughout. Further pressure from the visitors saw them entrenched in Town’s half, producing three corners in quick succession before a break from Osman after 25 minutes led to a frantic clearing header from the Parkgate defence, which might have resulted in an own goal. Parkgate’s response was another sustained run of possession which threatened the home goal. The initiative was then taken up by Town in what was becoming an end-to-end thriller and, after 36 minutes, the home team went ahead. Osman latched on to an inswinging corner which caused havoc in the visitors’ box and, despite a block from goalkeeper Jamie Bailey, Kieran Hoult put in the rebound for his first goal for the club. Parkgate fought back to dominate the remainder of the half and, with centre forward Nathan Forbes-Swindells dominant, it was no surprise when he blasted a free kick through a hole in the Town wall on the edge of the home box four minutes before the break to put the visitors level.

. . . Match Report and Photos Shaun Judge, having one of his quieter games of late, was substituted at the start of the second half by Cole Ashton. Parkgate started the half as they had finished the first with early pressure, Hannity again bringing out the best in Novak in the home goal. Town then roared back and Newcombe blasted over the bar, the goal seemingly at his mercy, after good work from Osman. Newcombe was to go close again immediately afterwards when keeper Bailey fumbled and it was from Newcombe’s corner on 52 minutes that a free-for-all in the visitors’ box led to a foul on Hoult and Newcombe buried the penalty to put Town ahead again. Town had most of the game in the remaining period and Ste Edwards, brought on for Newcombe, had a number of chances, the best of which was probably a shot, after a cross from Adam Howard, which brought a fine save from Bailey. At 3-1, Town would have been home and hosed and the temptation for this young side was to press forward and make the tie safe rather than running down the clock which, in retrospect, would have been the better option. In truth, there were several more chances to increase the lead, Carl Osman being the architect for two chances which fell to Michael Sykes-Wright, one of which was saved by Bailey after 79 minutes, the other going wide. Kieran Hoult then had a free kick cleared off the line with only minutes remaining, after Osman was fouled after another typical touchline break. Deep into injury time, however, Parkgate turned on the pressure for one final chance to take the tie into extra-time. A break from one end of the pitch to the other resulted in another excellent save by Lee Novak. The corner drew his opposite number Bailey to run the full length of the pitch to join his other 10 colleagues in Town’s box and the ball was scrambled over the line by Daniel Patterson for the inevitable leveller. Extra-time was, unfortunately, one-way traffic. Town had given everything and, physically and psychologically, they were drained when after only four minutes of the re-start, Forbes-Swindells scored to put Parkgate ahead for the first time. Town rarely threatened after that and the tie was already lost when Lee Crompton, under pressure from the advancing Hannity to clear his box, only succeeded in hitting the Parkgate player and the ball looped over the hapless Novak into the open goal. Unearthing Town’s History . . . Over the summer St Helens Town was contacted by John Owens regarding a previously unknown item of club history relating to the original Town club which operated between 1901 and the late 1920’s. John made available a photograph of the St Helens Town team from around 1901 which contained his grandfather William Owens. (pictured below) John said, “My grandfather was born in Garston, Liverpool on 28 December 1880 and played for St Helens around 1901. He is pictured on the back row, fourth from the left and appears to be looking away to the right. Although I don’t know the exact date of the photograph I’d say he was around 20 years old which seems right. He was 6’3” tall and played right back. His playing position was corroborated by my father and it was the position he played for Raith Rovers during the 1903-04 season. “At 17 (1897-8) he was reportedly the youngest professional player in Lancashire earning 2s 6d per a game which was more than he was paid working a Saturday afternoon as a saw doctor at Grayson’s Bobbin works in Window Lane, Garston. I believe he had previously played for Garston Gasworks and subsequently for Tranmere Rovers” Club Chairman John McKiernan added, “We were delighted to hear from John and his photograph is only one we have of the original club. There is some thought that the distinctive backdrop could be the Primrose ground in Park Road but at this moment we are unable to say for certain.”

Silsden v St Helens Town . . . North West Counties Football League Premier Division Saturday 6th October 2012 Silsden 7-1 St Helens Town Town hit for seven at Silsden Last Saturday’s clash at Silsden looked to offer an opportunity to pick up a vital win. However, not for the first time this season, a goal was conceded inside three minutes of the kick-off and, despite playing attractive, attacking football, a further three goals against the run of play left Town trailing 4-0 with little more than a quarter of the match gone. A cross from Gary Pye after two minutes was met with a good header from Carl Osman, which just cleared the home crossbar but the early initiative was lost when Silsden took play to the opposite end, where Andy Lee’s pass found Joe Gaughan who angled a tight shot over keeper Lee Novak’s head from 20 yards to put the Cobbydalers 1-0 up. Town then exerted their own pressure and first Adam Howard then Ste Edwards had chances before Shaun Judge’s header from a free kick was tipped over by home goalie Edward Hall. Against the run of play, Silsden again broke clear and a towering header from Danny Husband was saved at full stretch by Novak, only for Michael Garrod to bury the rebound after 14 minutes. Almost immediately, Silsden launched another attack and sloppy defence gifted Lee a crossing chance, which was once again rammed home by Garrod. Town tried to hit back and Judge hit a piledriver from 25 yards from Carl Osman’s pass on 24 minutes, but Silsden broke again and despite several attempts by Town defenders to clear the ball, Elliott Holmes found Gaughan for his second goal after 25 minutes. The game was effectively over as a contest by this stage but, to their credit, Town steadied the ship and had a number of chances to open their account, most notably from the promising Osman, but another blunder on the half-way line saw two Town defenders set Danny McNulty on the run to feed Andy Lee who made no mistake to fire Silsden 5-0 ahead with six minutes to go to the break. . . . Match Report and Photos Five shots and five goals gave the game a lop-sided look and, just to show they were only human, the home side actually missed their first chance just before the interval. Eight minutes into the second half, manager Ian Granite made three substitutions. Gary Pye, Cole Ashton and Greg Harrison were replaced by Michael Sykes-Wright, Lee Harrison and Phil Williams and the changes immediately injected more of a credible attacking threat. Town came more into the game and it was no surprise when Shaun Judge headed home after 58 minutes, following a pin-point corner from Adam Howard. Further attacks followed and Edwards went close twice more, his second saved well by Hall before Phil Williams’ fierce shot went narrowly wide. However, once again, a longdistance break from their own half saw Joe Jalil set up Garrod for his third goal after 66 minutes and, in much the same fashion, eight minutes later, Gaughan secured his own hat-trick with a beautifully lobbed effort from around 30 yards which caught Novak off his line. In summary, it was one of those days when virtually everything Silsden hit went in and, whilst Town deserved to be beaten, the final score of 7-1 was more than a little harsh in retrospect, against a team which promised much in attack but defensive frailties and a little rub of the green contributed to a hefty setback. Ian Granite and his team have much to work on ahead of this weekend’s FA Vase encounter with Parkgate at Edge Green Street. Glyn Jones

North West Counties Club News . . . AFC Darwen’s Anthony Hodges scored a late winner to clinch a 3-2 win for his side against Ashton Town on Saturday, but as well as being a dramatic end to the game, it was a goal that had added significance for the midfielder. Saturday’s game was Anthony last for the club for at least six months as he heads off on Thursday morning to serve in Afghanistan for the second time, as a front line soldier in the Duke of Lancaster's Infantry Regiment of the North West of England. As Anthony explained, it was a special way for him to sign off as he heads out with his regiment to serve his country. “I joined up in April 2010 and did six months training at Catterick garrison, and since then I’ve been to Canada, Afghanistan, Kenya and also been on courses down south as well. Hopefully when I get out there in Afghanistan I’ll get promoted to Lance-Corporal. I’ve been quite lucky to be able to play so much this season as I’ve been on a course for the last six weeks but each weekend I’ve been allowed to come home, so I’ve been available for games. I head off early on Thursday morning so unfortunately I won’t be available for the game on Wednesday (against Leek CSOB) as I need to keep myself fit and ready to go, so Saturday was always going to be my last game. “I’ve never scored a goal in my life and to get the winner was great, it’s as if it was written in the script. When it was 2-2, it was in my mind that I needed to get forward and see if I could get myself on the scoresheet for once, and I can’t believe it’s happened. To get my first ever goal in my last game for seven months was great, and I’ve got to be happy with that”. FA Vase 2nd Round Draw - Ties involving NWCFL clubs are as follows: Bedlington Terriers v Wigan Robin Park Barnoldswick Town or Maine Road v Armthorpe Welfare Winsford United v Morpeth Town
Bootle v Thackley Deeping Rangers v Norton United Runcorn Town v Formby
Ties will be played on Saturday 17th November 2012.

NWCFL FA Vase Highlights . . . Formby were the only side to win in six ties against outside opposition with a 2-1 win at Nostell Miners Welfare, with three other sides joining them in the Second Round after wins in allNWCFL ties. The hosts, playing their third NWCFL opponent this season, fell behind after just six minutes with Jason Carey scoring his 20th goal of the season. In the 21st minute the home side drew level with a good passing move resulting in James Eyles firing home, but the goal that proved to be the winner came seven minutes into the second half. Franny Smith released Emini Adegbenro who got to the by-line and crossed for Joe Walker to curl in the winner. There were four all NWCFL ties, with the much anticipated clash at Barnoldswick Town and Maine Road abandoned early on following an compound fracture of the left leg to Maine Road's Eddie Moran. They will try again on Tuesday evening, and I would like to join the many wishing Eddie a speedy recovery. Another anticipated clash came at the Delta Taxis Stadium where a last gasp winner saw Bootle overcame Stockport Sports 3-2. The opening goal arrived after 26 minutes when Daniel O'Connor put Neil Prince clear with the Player Manager firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner from the edge of the box. Eight minutes later the scores were level with Liam Irwin's cross turned in from close range by Gomez Dali. Five minutes before the break Bootle were awarded a penalty when Neil McQueen was fouled in the box. Prince ensured he would be delivering a different half time team talk by despatching the penalty. Stockport hit back again though after 67 minutes when Aaron Best's corner was turned in six yards out by Melford Knight. Deep into stoppage time and with a replay looking likely, Bootle broke the Saxon's hearts with a classic "route one" goal. A kick by the keeper was flicked on by Jamie Hay with Dan O'Connor racing clear and calmly side footing home. The biggest crowd of the day came at Runcorn Linnets, with visitors Winsford United travelling the short distance back home with a place in the next round following a 3-1 win. Philip Drummond opened the scoring for the visitors after 10 minutes when he curled a free kick into the top corner. The home side equalised midway through the second half with Michael Simpson busting forward and crossing for leading scorer Matty Jones to head home. Winsford went back in front with nine minutes remaining when Kyle McGonigle fired in an unstoppable shot from fully 25-yards. The result was sealed with a minute remaining when Andrew Hurst dispossessed a defender and slotted past the goalkeeper. Wigan Robin Park were the other winners on Saturday after a 3-1 win at Cheadle Town. Phil Howard put the visitors ahead after 32 minutes from the penalty spot, with Ian Rowlands doubling the advantage two minutes before the break. Andrew Lindon pulled one back just after the hour mark but Ryan Small's goal with nine minutes remaining put Wigan through to the Second Round for the first time in their history. Premier Division leaders Congleton Town bowed out of the competition after a 1-0 loss at Northern Counties East League (NCEL) side AFC Emley. Ashley Flynn's goal five minutes into the second half was all that separated the teams, the striker turning in Doran Jordan's low cross for his 11th goal of the season. A healthy crowd was on show at Valerie Park although the day didn’t go to plan for AFC Liverpool with Armthorpe Welfare won 3-1. Ben Muirhead put the NCEL side ahead after ten minutes with his corner floating directly into the top corner. Joe Lumsden's quickfire double midway through the second half made it 3-0, his first coming from the spot after Steffan Cairns was fouled in the box and his second a header from Callum Smith's cross. AFC Liverpool's goal arrived with ten minutes left when debutant Peter Doran’s low strike from the edge of the box took a deflection and nestled in the bottom corner of the net.
