Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division encounter against our friends from Ashton Athletic. I am sure that Ian and the lads will be grateful for the quick turnaround for the weekends disappointing performance and result against Stockport Sports here on Saturday. At the moment when we are good were are a match for anyone in this league as we proved at Bootle a fortnight ago becoming the first and to date only team to take any league points off the leaders. When we are not performing to that standard we are a mixed bag and anything can happen, which I suppose will made for a season which is not dull! We need to make sure that we get back on track starting this evening against an Ashton Athletic outfit that will have quite a few familiar names to the Town faithful in their squad tonight and a couple of even more familiar faces on the bench with former Town player and assistant manager Ian Street at the helm assisted by Town’s gaffer from last season Jimmy McBride, I hope they enjoy their visit to see us at Edge Green Street but not the result! On Saturday we found the destination of our FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round visit on 15th September as Daisy Hill netted the only goal of the game at Northwich Villa to secure their passage and will now host us with the winners of that tie being at home in the First Round proper to the winners of the Ashton Town v Parkgate tie on the 13th October. In other cup news we were drawn “away” to our landlords Ashton Town for the second year in a row in the First Round of the Liverpool Senior Cup with a date yet to be arranged for this tie. At time of going to press we are unsure if we will have a fixture this coming Saturday so please keep an eye on the usual social media outlets and the club and league websites for further up to date information in this regard. Finally, let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and has competed in a variety of leagues including the Lancashire Combination, and was a founder member of the North West Counties League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire league. Unfortunately financial constraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the Club was relegated into the Manchester league Division One. The drop of two leagues resulted in the majority of the playing staff moving to other club's and for numerous years the club endeavoured to re-build. Players came and went, lacking the Club loyalty that had brought success to the Club in the 1970's and early 80's until the Committee embraced an ambitious youth development policy in 1999. The Club is now more than half way through a ten-year development plan to enhance its recreational facilities and expand the Club, in particular its junior section. seven years ago the Club had two teams, 50 members, one mediocre pitch with dilapidated clubhouse and changing rooms. Since then the Club members have worked tirelessly to progress the Club within its means, and with some help from external grant sources. Assistance from the Football foundation, Awards for All programme, and Wigan Council enabled a series of improvements to be completed. The main pitch was re-drained, a second pitch acquired/improved, new changing rooms and Clubhouse built, disabled access provided and other improvements made to the grounds. More recently the ground was brought up to the necessary Ground Grading for re-entry into the NWCFL, in time for the start of the 2006/7 season. The work paid off and the application for rejoining the league was accepted. The 2007/2008 season also saw a further progression of the Club, onto the national stage, having been accepted in the FA Vase competition. The plan was then to follow this up with an application to the FA for admission to the FA Cup in the 2008/2009 season and this term the club played their first FA Cup tie sadly ending in a 2-0 defeat. Other plans include improvements to the access road, new junior changing rooms, and additional playing fields for the junior section and a proposed girls/Ladies section. The main ground is also scheduled for enhancement works with additional covered spectator areas The Club is a voluntary organisation run by a Committee of 15 alongside approximately 25 coaches and managers. Any money raised by the club has been ploughed back into improving the facilities and developing the youth section. The Club now has a total membership of more than 400. We have 10 junior teams consisting of approximately 170 children who take advantage of the improvement of our now excellent facilities, whilst hundreds of children and adults from opposition teams also benefit from the continually improving facilities. The Club is keen to maintain the pace of development of the club and future plans will enable increased activity at the Club, additional Junior teams and a much safer and secure environment in particular for the Children. The Club is also committed and positively working towards an application to the FA for Charter Standard, and an intensive Coach Education Programme is well under way. . . . Ashton Athletic Football Club 2007/8 saw the club finish a creditable third in the Second Division and secure promotion it also saw the clubs debut in the FA Vase which proved very lucrative for the Club, progressing through 3 stages and beating 2 teams from higher leagues in the process. The 2008/2009 season was one of further progression for the Club, having been promoted to the Premier Division of the Vodkat North West Counties League. Athletic took a step up onto the national stage, having been accepted in the FA Cup competition. They had a great first season in the top flight finishing in 6th position exceeding many seasoned commentators expectations. The season also saw cup success as they retained the Atherton Charity Cup at the end of the season. The 2009/10 season was one of problems for the club as they battled at the wrong end of the table for the majority of the season and they did not manage to get out of the relegation zone finishing 21st just above Challenge Cup winners Abbey Hey. A late reprieve was gratefully accepted by the club as following the demise and withdrawal of Nelson FC at the 11th hour the club were reinstated to the Premier Division. It was a bitter sweet experience for the club as after setting up for a season in Division One they struggled to adapt to the higher level and after battling at the wrong end of the table finished bottom and in the relegation places for the second consecutive season. The club was again reprieved at the AGM in June with Rossendale United folding and Formby being relegated despite finishing in mid-table. It was all change on the managerial side for the 2011/2 season as Steve Wilkes took up the reigns with former Town player Steve Cunningham as his assistant. The move has proved to be a good one for Athletic as they finished in 15th position but Wilkes moved back to Padiham at the end of the season and Winsford United manager Ian Street took up the reins with Jimmy McBride being installed as his assistant for the 2012/13 season.

A Word from the Dugout . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for tonight's game against Ashton Athletic . Results at the moment are not going our way and after Saturday’s defeat at the hands of promotion favourites Stockport Sports I'll be looking for a response from the lads. Saturday's first half performance was not acceptable and the lads have been told this in no uncertain terms the minimum requirement in this team is hard work. On Saturday some players thought otherwise; some players will find themselves out of the squad if attitude, commitment and performances don't improve . Tonight’s opponents have had a similar start to the season as us and they will come here tonight looking for three points. Ashton bowed out of the FA Vase on Saturday losing out 0-2 at home to Runcorn Linnets. If we have the same desire and commitment that we have shown in some games this season we will be hard to beat but the attitude has to be right from the first whistle. I have confidence in the lads at the club and when on top form I know we will be a challenge for any team in the league and hopefully the players will show this tonight. I hope everyone enjoys the game and has a safe journey home. We are back at home at the end of the month (29th September) when Runcorn Town will make the trip to Ashton. Ian Granite

REMINDER The club are holding a Sportsman’s Evening on Saturday 3rd November. Howard Kendall is the main speaker along with comedian Frankie Allen. Tickets are priced £20 and are available from any Town committee members. See the full advert in today’s programme.

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with Ashton Athletic FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. I missed last Saturday’s 0-5 thumping by Stockport Sports and by all accounts we were poor with the league’s new boys taking their chances, something they had previously been threatening to do against others. We played Stockport Sports as a re-arranged league fixture as our planned FA Vase opponents Westella and Willerby had withdrawn from the competition. We will now meet Daisy Hill, who ousted Northwich Villa on Saturday, on Saturday 15th September. Tonight’s opponents Ashton Athletic bowed out of the Vase on Saturday, going down 0-2 at home to Runcorn Linnets. No doubt they will be hoping to bounce back, something I am sure Town will also be hoping for. The Ashton Athletic team and staff will have a familiar look for Town fans with a number of players from recent seasons now at Brocstedes Park under former Town player Ian Street and his assistant, former Town boss Jimmy McBride. The management pair have recently been joined by another Town player, Terry Hoey who has joined as coach. There were a couple of excellent Vase wins on Saturday for ’local’ sides with Formby thrashing previously unbeaten Padiham 5-1 while our ‘landlords’ Ashton Town recorded an impressive 2-4 win at Atherton Collieries; bringing closer a possible Town v Ashton Town FA Vase meeting (if we both win in the next r round!) At the time of writing I am unaware of our fixture situation this coming Saturday - at present we are again without a Saturday fixture as we await the results from midweek FA Cup replays. Our next confirmed fixture is the FA Vase game at Daisy Hill a week on Saturday. Don’t forget our 500+ Club started well in August and we are always on the look-out for new members. Entries cost £1 per number - please see any committee member for details. Enjoy the game and don’t forget to join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and the St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ Presentation. Unearthing Town’s History . . . Over the summer St Helens Town was contacted by John Owens regarding a previously unknown item of club history relating to the original Town club which operated between 1901 and the late 1920’s. John made available a photograph of the St Helens Town team from around 1901 which contained his grandfather William Owens. (pictured below) John said, “My grandfather was born in Garston, Liverpool on 28 December 1880 and played for St Helens around 1901. He is pictured on the back row, fourth from the left and appears to be looking away to the right. Although I don’t know the exact date of the photograph I’d say he was around 20 years old which seems right. He was 6’3” tall and played right back. His playing position was corroborated by my father and it was the position he played for Raith Rovers during the 1903-04 season. “At 17 (1897-8) he was reportedly the youngest professional player in Lancashire earning 2s 6d per a game which was more than he was paid working a Saturday afternoon as a saw doctor at Grayson’s Bobbin works in Window Lane, Garston. I believe he had previously played for Garston Gasworks and subsequently for Tranmere Rovers” Club Chairman John McKiernan added, “We were delighted to hear from John and his photograph is only one we have of the original club. There is some thought that the distinctive backdrop could be the Primrose ground in Park Road but at this moment we are unable to say for certain.”

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Photographs: Above Tommy O’Neil holding aloft the FA Vase in 1987. Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue. St Helens Town AFC Managers . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in midterm. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs Combination Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured left) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Having previously been the manager of highly successful local league side ’Furnacemen’s Arms FC’ Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006 -7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However, the club decided it could not wait for a repeat and an upsurge in results as the final few weeks of the 2008-09 season unfolded and Town remained rooted in a relegation spot. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games of the season. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley (pictured left) steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 200910. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season sees Jimmy McBride makes a return to Town following a brief spell in the Cheshire League with Billinge FC but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - present Ian Granite is appointed following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information. NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

St Helens Town . . . The present St. Helens Town club has just embarked on its 66th league season. The first two 1947-49 were spent in the Liverpool County Combination, the period 1949-75 in membership of the Lancashire Combination, followed by 7 years in the Cheshire League and the last 30 in the North West Counties League, where they are the only club in permanent membership of the top division. During the early years, the newly reformed club had lofty ambitions, just as the original club had harboured in the early years of the last century. Success in the Liverpool County Combination culminated in the club’s first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was won in a thrilling final against Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. The following season, 1949/50, Town joined the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination, gaining promotion at the second attempt. Back in 1951, long before the establishment of the football pyramid, the Lancashire Combination and the Cheshire League were widely regarded as the Football League’s Fifth Division. Leading clubs from both competitions vied for membership of the Football League. New Brighton had just failed to be re-elected to the Third Division (North) and dropped into the Lancashire Combination, where they came up against Town on 20th October at the Tower Grounds, Garner and Sumner each scoring in a creditable 2-2 draw. Wigan Athletic were prominent members of the Combination (and, later on, the Cheshire League) and many St. Helens Town supporters were of the opinion that, whatever Wigan could do, Town could also do. There was a great deal of ambition around the Town club, built on the back of early successes, that a Football League place could be an achievable aim. After all, despite the competition from the Saints at Knowsley Road, several thousand men travelled from St. Helens every week to watch Everton and Liverpool. Success on the football field might well persuade a good number of those people to watch their football on their St. Helens doorsteps. Town’s first season in the First Division of the Lancashire Combination was an uphill struggle. Nevertheless, three wins from the last five games almost secured their status and they finished just two points adrift of Rossendale United in 20th place. 1952/53 began well enough and there were 6 wins and a draw from the first 7 games. However, there was unrest at Hoghton Road, where crowds were not as good as many thought they should be. It was generally thought that a move to a ground nearer the town centre would result in bigger support and with the bigger gates, the club would be able to attract better players and further its ambitions for Football League status. St. Helens Recs. Rugby League club had played professional rugby at City Road between the wars, but the Pilkingtons company had withdrawn their financial support in April 1939 and the ground had stood empty until 1949, when Pilkington Recs. were re-born as an amateur rugby league club. Pilkingtons were approached and the company’s board agreed to make City Road available to St. Helens Town. The Town Chairman, W. P. NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

. . . The Early Years Smith, told the local press that the club had come to the cross-roads and a drastic solution to the club’s financial problems had to be found. It was a question of raising income or disband. Not enough people were willing to pay their shilling at the gate. It was announced that a meeting would be held in the refreshment hut following the Droylsden game on 22nd November to discuss the proposed move. The momentous decision was taken to re-locate to City Road and the first game, a Liverpool Non-League Cup game against Stoneycroft, resulted in an 8-1 victory. The following week, 6th December, Morecambe Reserves were dispatched 8-0. Ronnie Rigby scored 4 goals in each match. Crowds were encouraging at first, although they were a little disappointing if Saints were at home the same day. The season was quite successful, but Town ran out of steam towards the end, finishing in fourth place and just missing out on promotion. 1953/54 season began at City Road but, by the end of October, Town were back at Hoghton Road and the ground was taken off the market. A renewed appeal was made for more volunteers to assist the club and for supporters to be militant, rather than passive and to back the club’s ten shilling shares scheme to secure the club’s financial future. Part-way through the season, First Division Bootle folded and Town made application to take over their fixtures. However, their application was rejected and the season ended with some poor results. The following campaign, 1954/55, was worse and the club finished in eighteenth position yet, curiously, were promoted back to the First Division. Predictably, 1955/56, in the First Division, was a bridge too far. Three wins and three draws from 38 games (conceding 110 goals) resulted in a last place finish and, more importantly, the bitter realisation that ambitions for higher status were further away than ever before.

Congleton v St Helens Town . . . Tuesday 28th August 2012 North West Counties League, Premier Division Congleton Town 2-0 St Helens Town 1-0; Chris Smith 53 Minutes, 2-0; Chris Smith 65 Minutes(Penalty). St Helens Town failed to register for the first time this season as they went down to their second league defeat of the season at Booth Street this evening. The early signs were promising as the visitors enjoyed plenty of possession and an early move saw skipper Carl Osman find Stephen Edwards in the penalty area where he turned and found his goal bound effort locked by a defender. The hosts looked dangerous on the counter attack and after a St Helens attack Chris Smith was released by a ball from the right before firing an effort diagonally across goal which went wide of the left hand upright. Another counter saw Smith thwarted by a fine challenge from Lee Crompton when he looked certain to score as the tide started to turn and the hosts began to dominate proceedings. Midway through the half St Helens carved out a great opening when Osman was found by Ashley Rimmer and he drove into the area beating a couple of defenders before he was crowed out and the chance was lost. The Achilles heel for the hosts and the visitors in the opening period was neither side gave the opposition keepers any work to do and the sides went into the interval goalless. The start of the second period looked encouraging as after 17 seconds Matt Conkie in the Congleton goal was called into action as he had to be alert to stop an effort from Edwards from 20 yards out. Conkie was beaten all ends up a couple of the minutes later when Andy Mawdsley finished off a flowing move by curling an effort past the keeper from the right hand edge of the area but his effort thumped the left hand upright and was cleared from danger. Ironically at the end of the visitors best period of dominance it was the hosts who took the lead a counter attack saw Daniel Doherty released on the right wing by a long ball and he NWCFL Premier Division Season 2011-12 Programme of the Year

. . . Match Report and Photos advanced into the box drawing the keeper before playing the ball forward to Smith who tapped home from close range there was a strong suspicion that both Doherty and Smith were offside in the move but there was no flag and the goal was allowed to stand. St Helens spurned a glorious chance to level when a Rimmer cross found Edwards on the far post and his header back across the face of the goal was collected by Osman who found his effort deflected over the bar for a corner which came to nothing. Again the visitors were caught on the counter by Congleton as when another foray forward broke down the hosts moved the ball quickly forward and an effort from close range struck Mawdsley on the hand and the referee awarded a penalty which Smith stepped up to convert. In the closing stages Osman released Edwards with a fine ball from the right and he was one on one with the keeper but under pressure from a defender and his heavy first touch made the chance more difficult and when he got his shot off Conkie was well placed to stop the effort. Deep in added on time Rimmer almost snatched a consolation for the visitors when he had a powerful effort from the edge of the box tipped over the bar by the home stopper. North West Counties Club News . . . Oldham Boro have used the brief respite in their fixture list this weekend to officially launch a new home shirt. Secretary Billy O’Neill said: “With the re-location to Alder Street completed and the first few ‘home games’ under our belt, we are now pushing forward with promoting the club. Though playing our football 20 miles from home makes it that much harder, it’s important to ensure the area of Oldham, its council and our supporters don’t forget where we are. “As we’ve just changed our home strip, we thought that rather than do the traditional manager/player/sponsor style photo to launch it, the club could produce something a little different to attract attention. So Tim Abram, 15 year old son of Boro webmaster Paul Cullen, drafted some initial ideas and then enlisted Boro’s Rick Winstanley as a male model. Once Tim saw Rick’s tattoo artwork, the rest apparently just fell into place. He used two of the photos from his session with Rick and then set about manipulating the images to create the finished photo-build. “Our home shirt sponsors for the last 2 years ‘The Famous King George’ have kindly agreed to extend their sponsorship for a further season, so we will be presenting them with a framed poster of the original as a thank you“ Angels Alternative Assets have also come on board as club partners, providing tracksuits for all the players and staff. We were especially pleased with this particular agreement as Angels confirmed that they were initially drawn to Oldham Boro by the quality of our official website”, explained Billy. “We’ve also added several associate sponsors pre season who have helped ensure that we can continue at this level. Hopefully our 3-2-1 pricing policy (adults £3, concessions £2 and children £1) will help us retain our own supporters interest with their increased travel costs, and also appeal to local match-goers and ground hoppers”. Recent League Landmarks Tuesday 21st August 2012 Matthew Warburton's goal for Maine Road in their 4-1 win at Stone Dominoes, Road's final goal of the evening, was their 1700th League goal. Saturday 1st September 2012 Paul Socha's 84th minute winner for Chadderton in their 3-2 at Eccleshall was the club's 750th away League goal.

North West Counties Club News . . . Togo International joins The Saxons Stockport Sports have announced that they have clinched the signing of Togo international Donaldson Sackey. 23 year old striker Sackey has experience in a number of leagues around Europe and has chosen The Saxons as the next step on his career path. Sackey, who counts Emmanuel Adebayor among the players he has played alongside, outlined his extensive CV to Chris Culkin of The Saxons media team. “I was in the youth team academy at Hamburger SV and then joined Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga, where I played in their reserves. I had two seasons there before joining Borussia Berlin in 3 Bundesliga. Then I went to SD Compostela in Spain in the Spanish second division where I had one season and a half. Finally I had a time at FC Oss in Netherlands. Peter Withe was a big factor to come to the club, as he is a manager with a lot of experience. He is great, a very good manager with good training methods. We can go very far here, we have a good young squad with hungry players. The club is very good, it's a well organised club with a bright future. I had offers from other clubs but decided to sign here. “Of course I'm looking forward to helping the team and going as far as possible. The league will be a tough league, every game will be a final. Interest in Stockport Sports is growing throughout the world, following the publication of an article regarding the signing of Donaldson Sackey on the StarAfrica website. StarAfrica is a website dedicated to providing African news and sport to readers all over the globe, and this week they chose to report on Donaldson's decision to join The Saxons. The article explains how Donaldson signed for The Saxons, and how the Togo international had a trial last year at Tottenham Hotspur, the club of his countryman and friend Emmanuel Adebayor. Main Sponsor Back Bacup Bacup Borough have announced that main sponsor B & E Boys have extended their existing agreement for a further season. After the Rossendale construction and property development company confirmed the deal, Bacup Borough manager Brent Peters said: “Boys have given us excellent support over the past few years, and as part of the deal, our ground will continue to be known as the Brian Boys West View Stadium “The firm’s motto is ‘Boys – Only Happy When They Are Building Something’, and they are certainly helping to build a bright future for this football club with their continued valuable sponsorship.
