Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Bacup Borough. Let me open by welcoming the players, management, committee and Sspporters of Bacup to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this afternoon. It has been a frustrating week for St Helens Town as a waterlogged pitch put paid to the midweek match at Bootle, thus ensuring that Town could not bounce back from the disappointing defeat here against Padiham last Saturday. A poor first half performance similar to the FA Vase Tie in September effectively put paid to Town’s chances of winning the match. A poor goal to concede and then the sending off of Kevin Woods on his return to the starting line-up would have seen most teams fold and indeed a season ago we probably would have lost the match heavily. However the ten men regrouped after the interval and out manoeuvred the visitors 11 men levelling through Marc Stephens and creating chance after chance without being able to convert and in the cruel way only football can Padiham netted on a counter attack to steal all three points. This afternoon sees the visit of our Lancastrian friends from West View for our first meeting of the season. These two sides met three times last term with Bacup taking the spoils in all three contests including knocking Town out to of the FA Cup. Bacup have had a recent resurgence with impressive victories over Silsden and Runcorn Linnets. The visitors were thwarted by Snow in Bacup on Wednesday as their scheduled match against Formby was called off and they have suffered more than most having only played six home matches in the league this term in a total of 18 matches the lowest in the league.

Town will need to put in a good performance for the duration of the match rather than just putting it in for one half as in last Saturday’s contest. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with today’s visitors, friends and rivals Bacup Borough FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter! A frustrating past week saw our planned League game at Bootle fall foul of the weather as a waterlogged pitch caused the late postponement of the fixture on Tuesday evening. This followed our disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Padiham last Saturday when the visitors snatched a late winner. Town had found themselves below par, a goal down and minus a ‘keeper as the first half ended but a battling performance in the second period deserved much more. Town dominated the second half and created numerous chances to take the lead before succumbing to the late strike, one of only two efforts on goal by the visitors! I know Town boss Gary Bickerstaffe was disappointed at losing out on Tuesday evening’s game at Bootle as match fitness is key as the club enters a crucial period looking to progress in the Vodkat League Cup and maintain our lofty league position as the chasing pack of clubs makes ground. Today will be another tough encounter as Brent Peters’ outfit have proved difficult opposition over recent seasons and Town will be looking to do better than last season when Bacup won all three victories which included our departure from the FA Cup. Bacup arrive on the back of a victory 2-3 over Runcorn Linnets last Saturday, but they too were frustrated as their mid-week home encounter with Formby was postponed courtesy of a frozen pitch. Next Tuesday sees Town take on neighbours and first time opponents Wigan Robin Park in the quarter final of the Vodkat League Cup. The League Management Committee have recently stated that the ‘winter fixture backlog’ has meant that the semi-final games will be one game with the side drawn first in each of the ties having home advantage (as opposed to previous seasons where the semi-finals were two-legged). In Town Today . . . Bacup Borough have the honour, along with Darwen, of being the oldest club in the North West Counties League, having been formed in 1875. In the mid 1870’s Robert Rankin and his brother John came to Bacup from Scotland, bringing with them enough soccer ability and enthusiasm to form a football team. Robert was the manager of the textile dying process at Irwell Springs Printing Company Ltd, hence the team they formed being known as Irwell Springs. On September 2nd 1889, Irwell Springs moved into their new ground at West View in Bacup, which has been their home ever since. The first game on their new ground was against Football League founding members Accrington Stanley. A crowd of over 1,000 saw the match abandoned with five minutes remaining after a heavy downpour. Accrington had been leading 7-1 at the time. Just a year later Irwell Springs changed their name to Bacup Borough. In 1911 Bacup won the Lancashire Junior Cup for the only time (although they were runners up in 1923 and 1975) and a year later were hosts to one of the most famous names in football when Manchester United travelled to West View for a Lancashire Senior Cup tie. For the record, United won the game 5-1. In 1930 Bacup won the East Lancs Shield, however, their proudest moment came in 1946/47 when they won the Lancashire Combination and were runners up to Marine in the League Cup Final. This period of success also saw Bacups record attendance when an amazing 4,980 people turned up to watch them play Nelson - a total which is unlikely to be beaten in the near future! Bacup continued in the Lancashire Combination, becoming runners up in 1972/73 on goal average, despite scoring 101 goals. In 1974/75 they reached the final of the Lancashire Junior Cup (now known as the Lancashire Challenge Trophy) after victories over Formby, Wigan Athletic, South Liverpool and Morecambe, before going down 1-0 to Lancaster City in the final. In 1980/81 Bacup reached the final of the Lancashire Combination League Cup, only to lose 3-1 on aggregate in a two-legged final against Caernarfon. In 1982/83 Bacup Borough became founding members of the North West Counties League. Initial placings were decided on playing performance and the clubs facilities and Bacup found themselves in Division Three. The team acquitted themselves well, finishing mid-table each season until 1987/88 when, following the exodus of a number of clubs to the Northern Premier League, the NWCL was reorganized and Bacup found themselves in the new Division Two. Unfortunately, the club suffered the embarrassment of finishing bottom of the League and having to apply to re-election. The first few weeks of 1988/89 saw Bacup again struggling, but the transformation came in October 1988 with the arrival of Gary Warburton as manager. Bacup lost only a handful of games over the following 18 months and at the end of

. . . Bacup Borough FC 1989/90 finished as runners up in Division Two to gain promotion to Division One for the first time. They also reached the quarter finals of the League Cup and were runners up in the first ever Division Two Trophy final in a thrilling game against Great Harwood. Along the way Gary picked up two Manager of the Month awards while Jimmy Clarke and Gerry Keenan won Player of the Month awards, while Clarke ended as the leading goalscorer in Division Two. The club held its own in Division One until 1994/95 when disaster struck and they finished bottom of Division One, failing to win away from home all season and suffering some heavy defeats. There was no respite the following season as they ended 1995/96 propping up the table for the second time. However, since those dark years in the mid 90’s, Bacup have slowly but surely improved. In September of the 1997/98 season with no points on the board and following a humiliating 0-10 defeat by Tetley Walker, the committee were prompted to part company with their then manager. This made way for the appointment of Brent Peters as team manager. It was a masterstroke for the club and in 2000/01 they reached the final of the Division Two Trophy again, this time losing out to Squires Gate. Slowly but surely Brent built up a strong team and in 2002/03 they won the Division Two title, the first major success for the club in 56 years, a feat made even more remarkable by the fact that they played all their games for the first few months of the season away from home as major work was carried out on their pitch and ground. They also used the impressive surroundings of Accrington Stanley’s ground for some home games. The success of this season brought Brent three Manager of the Month awards and the Manager of the Year Award. Bacup Boroughs first season back in Division One was certainly an impressive one. A solid mid-table position in the League was satisfactory enough, but to add to that Bacup Borough ran out winners in their first ever appearance in the League Challenge Cup Final, defeating Newcastle Town 3-0 at Southports Haig Avenue ground. Secretary Frank Manning also celebrated 50 years in the game he was given a Gold Award on behalf of the Football Association. The 2004/5 season saw Bacup improve their standing within the league and a 9th place finish was their reward in their second season in Division One. Borough managed to finish the 2005/6 in 17th pace after struggling for much of the season. Last term saw Bacup have a bright start to the season but they were blighted by pitch problems and entered 2007 with a backlog of matches to play and ended up finishing in 15th position. The 2007/8 saw Bacup again blighted by pitch problems and they had a large number of matches to fit in when March came. The club finished in 18th position playing three games at week at the close of the season.

Vodkat League News Adam's African Coaching Mission Winsford United's Adam Bayley is jetting off on the trip of a lifetime to deliver sports coaching to primary school youngsters this weekend. A South Cheshire College student, Adam (pictured left) is heading for the warmer climes of Kenya where he will help children develop their skills in popular sports such as football and volleyball. The trip of a lifetime is being driven by Multiflex Ltd - a local organisation which delivers coaching sessions to up to ten primary school pupils in Cheshire each week. A number of the schools which use Multiflex have links with schools in Kenya and have helped pave the way for the visit. 20 year old Adam, who is a central defender for Winsford, works part time for Multiflex on Thursdays and Fridays to complement the skills he learns on his course in Coaching and Fitness at the college's Dane Bank Avenue campus. Adam will join Mark Webb, director of Multiflex, two other Multiflex employees and eight teachers from Cheshire primary schools, to deliver the two-week programme which culminates with a sports festival. During their visit the party will fly into Nairobi before heading to Njoro where the schools are located. They will also take a batch of sports equipment to deliver to the youngsters who don't have access to the same facilities as pupils in Britain. Adam and other members of the team will coach youngsters in football, volleyball and other activities before the children test their skills in the festival which will act as a grand finale. Adam told the Crewe and Nantwich Guardian: "I've been working for Multiflex for a number of months now and when the opportunity to go to Kenya arose I jumped at it. "My first love is football but I enjoy delivering coaching in all school sports and other activities and engaging with local primary school children. I've never ventured further than Europe before but I can't wait to get out there to work with the African children and feel it's a great privilege. I'm looking forward to putting what I've learnt on my college course and at Multiflex into practice. I think this is something good to put on my CV and I may never get the opportunity to do it again." Bootle v Everton Programmes still available! Around The Grounds Community Drive Norton United One of the less conventional setups there is in the NWCFL, Community Drive certainly lives up to its name. The complex plays host to several sports including cricket and five a side, with a spacious clubhouse which I assume also acts as a pavilion. The first challenge you are faced with once you enter the sports complex is locating the football pitch, pretty much a 50% chance of that with your first decision of turning left or right when you enter through the main entrance. Turning right takes you to the clubhouse whilst a left turn takes you down the player’s tunnel down the stairs to the pitch. A pitch that looks like it’s kept in pretty good condition and shown some care and attention. Otherwise the stadium is fairly basic in its appearance and facility. There’s a very limited amount of cover available down one side of the pitch that I should imagine becomes very popular and packed on a poor weather day. The rest of the ground is open standing but for those that prefer an elevated view of the action, an embankment behind the stand provides an un-obscured view of the match from a higher position. One small improvement would be a raised net at the bottom end of the ground to catch any wayward strikers efforts, as sometimes a long run is required to retrieve the ball from the playing pitch behind. On the whole, a slightly strange setup and a basic facility. Still, it’s a pitch to play football, and that’s all you really need. Overall score: 3/10

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
St Helens Town AFC . . . Re-formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

. . . A Brief History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-ofWar Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Introduction to the . . . Graeme McCall: Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keeper’s jersey. Kevin Woods: Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones: Commanding centre half now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke: Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Rob Hanley: Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Iain Dyson: Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club’s top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond, had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell: Brother of Graeme, followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Adam Gilchrist: Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens: Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Dougie Pitts: Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere.

St. Helens Town squad Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen ‘Ben’ Kay: Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Nick McLoughlin: Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Paul Monteith: Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Peter Birch: Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possesses good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces. Luke Faulkner: Seventeen year old central defender who has recently joined the club from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club last season as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables. Gary Bickerstaffe: Rejoined the club late last season as manager having had a previous spell as a player in the 1990s. His arrival last term ensured we staved off relegation comfortably with eight wins from our last 11 league encounters. A mid-field dynamo at the height of his playing career Gary has graced a number of clubs including Congleton Town, Winsford United and Bangor City and has been assistant Manager at both Warrington Town and Congleton and Manager at Garswood United. Other squad players include prolific strikers David Burns and Jamie Foster along with Andy Gillespie and Danny Clarke who have all stepped up from St Helens Town Reserve team football so far this season.

Fan’s Eye View Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this afternoon’s Vodkat North West Counties Premier Division match against Bacup Borough. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. Well with the weather continuing to frustrate us all with the midweek match against Bootle being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, there has been only one other match to report since we were all last gathered here, and it was the reason we were all last gathered here. The first league match against Padiham for almost half a century was to end in heartbreak and leave us supporters somewhat deflated after the full time whistle. It wasn’t to prove the easiest of matches for Town after they trailed at halftime and were reduced to ten men after the sending off of goalkeeper Kevin Woods, but the resiliency, effort and determination that the players showed in the 2nd half to fight back and get themselves level was something to behold. Never before had I seen a 10-man team dominate their weightier opposition and go so close, so many times without scoring. And the way in which Padiham scored their winning goal in the 87th minute just added to the deflation. The ball squeezing under a dive from stand in keeper Ben Kay and presenting the ball in front of an empty net for their forward. Town never recovered and slipped to a heartbreaking defeat. That encounter must now be consigned to the past and Town must look forward to this afternoon and a match against Bacup Borough, a team that St Helens Town will not have fond memories of from last season. Yep, three matches played against the Lancashire side ended up in three defeats, including a disappointing performance in the FA Cup Preliminary Round at Cowtoot Lane. This season though, Town are very much a different team and with Bacup having an indifferent season, maybe now is the time to redress the balance of power a little bit between the two sides. Bacup have spent their fair share of time in the news lately, the most memorable of these occasions would be then their food acquired nationwide acclaim on Sky Sports News and manager Brent Peters complaining that the long break from the winter weather had cost his team silverware when Winsford United knocked them out of the league challenge cup, after he had previously suggested that a winter break was a good idea. No doubt the result and the circumstance of last weekend will still be in the minds of both the manager and his players and this must act as motivation for this afternoon not to let it happen again. Town’s form has taken a dip of late and if they are to continue to be punching above their weight then they must get this turned around. A win this afternoon will obviously acquire three points but might prove more positive outcome from this would be the confidence boost that victory carries, what is currently missing from the squad. Vodkat League News Vase Performances in the Noughties With New Mills going out of the FA Vase last weekend, our league is without a representative in the quarter finals of the competition for only the second time since 1999. In response to a number of enquiries, here's a list of our best performers in the FA Vase over the past ten years. 1999-2000 - Mossley lost 3-1 to eventual winners Deal Town in the quarter final. 2000-01 - Clitheroe lost 8-4 on aggregate to eventual winners Taunton Town in the semi final. After winning 4-3 home, Clitheroe lost 5-0 in the second leg down in Somerset. 2001-02 - Clitheroe lost 2-1 at home to eventual winners Whitley Bay in the quarter final. 2002-03 - Mossley lost 2-0 at home to eventual losing finalists AFC Sudbury in the quarter final. 2003-04 - Colne lost 4-3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury in the semi final. After a 3-2 defeat down in Suffolk in the first leg, Colne were held 1-1 at the Holt House Stadium in the second leg, and AFC Sudbury went on to lose in the final for second year in a row. 2004-05 - Colne lost 3-2 at home to eventual winners Didcot Town in the Fifth Round. Didcot inflicted a third successive final defeat on AFC Sudbury. 2005-06 - Nantwich Town lifted the Vase with a 3-1 win over Hillingdon Borough at Birmingham City's St Andrews ground. This was a particularly good year for our league, with Cammell Laird reaching the semi final (losing 5-0 on aggregate to Nantwich in an all-NWCFL semi final), and Squires Gate reached the quarter final, where they lost 2-0 at Hillingdon Borough. 2006-07 - Curzon Ashton lost 3-2 on aggregate to Truro City in the semi final. After winning 1-0 at the Tameside Stadium in the first leg, Curzon lost 3-1 in the second leg down in Cornwall. 2007-08 - Kirkham & Wesham lifted the trophy with a 2-1 win over Lowestoft Town in the final at Wembley. 2008-09 - Glossop North End fail to make it two in a row for the Vodkat League, going down 2-0 to Whitley Bay in the final at Wembley. 2009-10 - New Mills are the last Vodkat League representatives to go out of the competition, losing 2-0 to Norton & Stockton Ancients in the Fifth Round.

Vodkat League News Update On Cup Competitions In the light of potential fixture congestion later in the season, the League Management Committee has decided that the Semi Finals of both the League Challenge Cup and the Division One Trophy will be played over ONE match this season. In each competition, the club drawn first in each tie will be at home in the semi final. The draw for the Semi Finals of both competitions will be made when all Semi Finalists of the respective Competition are known. The status of each competition at the moment is as follows: League Challenge Cup Quarter Finals Abbey Hey v Daisy Hill or New Mills Irlam or Bootle v Newcastle Town St Helens Town v Wigan Robin Park Winsford United v Glossop North End or AFC Liverpool The Final of the League Challenge Cup will be held on Thursday 6th May 2010 at the Tameside Stadium, home of Curzon Ashton F.C. St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Burnley, Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Sat 13th February; Vodkat League Premier Division St Helens Town 1-2 Padiham The early stages of contest were end to end action and the conclusion was that this match was not going to be goalless. Ben Kay and Iain Dyson linked on the right with Dyson sending a dangerous cross into the six yard box which just managed to elude Mike Scully on the far post. Moments later it took a will timed challenge from John Elias in the box to take deny Mike Morrison after he had linked up with Lee Morris. Scully released Rob Hanley with a well placed pass on 15 minutes but a poor first touch when 1on1 by the striker saw the chance lost. It was then Scully’s turn to waste a good opening when he was released on the left hand side of the area and his poorly executed shot was easily held by Sean Davis. At the other end Morrison rounded Kevin Woods on the left of the penalty area and calm defending by Luke Faulkner saw his clear the ball off the line. It was then Woods turn to avert the danger after he got a hand to Morris’s dangerous cross before smothering the loose ball at Morrison’s feet. Town created another two chances in quick succession when first Phil Mitchell linked with Kay and he shot over the bar from 25 yards. Mitchell’s quick thinking saw him find Mark Evans with a quick throw and his cross was headed down by Hanley, Scully collected the knock down but his shot was deflected behind by a Padiham defender. Padiham took the lead on 27 minutes when Morris found space on the left of the Town box and his effort thundered off the crossbar with Woods beaten, the rebound broke to Stuart Telfer and he added the simple finish from close range. On the half hour the bizarre decisions started as Hanley was clearly fouled by Paul Howarth in the penalty area, with everyone expecting the obvious penalty Mr Day decided it was not and booked Hanley for “simulation” but appeared to be giving Town a corner until changing his mind as it could not have been an offence if Howarth had won the ball and turned it behind. Dyson did well to create space on 33 minutes to turn and shoot but Davis held his effort and with the half drawing to a close Evans and Mitchell linked with the latter sending in a cross come shot that eluded the keeper and went just over the angle of the upright and crossbar. In the final minute of the half matters were to take a turn for the worse when Woods was sent from the field for a challenge on Chris Ridehalgh just outside the box, with no substitute keeper on the bench Ben Kay took up the position between the sticks. The second half was to be a good period for the 10 men as they defied the visitors numerical advantage to take the game by the scruff of the neck and created chance after chance. Hanley turned well in the box but did not connect fully with his shot and Davis claimed at the second attempt. Mitchell craved out an opening with a run from midfield and his effort went wide of the right hand upright. On 63 minutes Town were level, after a good run from Marc Stephens saw him get to the edge of the area where he unleashed his effort which was on target but took a deflection off Howarth and beat Davis. Six minutes later Hanley broke past the visitors defensive line and would have been running in on goal had he not been taken out but again the officials did not see any offence and play was allowed to continue. Stephens and Hanley linked on 78 minutes with Hanley beating his marker and getting into the area he drew the keeper and squared the ball trying to find Dyson but the ball was cleared by Craig Chadwick. Further Town pressure saw Elias advance and try his luck from 25 yards but his shot went wide of the right hand upright with Davis beaten. Next Elias sent a cross in from the right wing which deflected towards Dyson and Scully on the far post but they appeared to get in each others way with the goal gaping. Hanley was released by Stephens on 84 minutes and the striker was driven wide by Davis sprawling challenge, Hanley stay “honest” and his effort was cleared off the line. Moments later Hanley went down the left of the box and tried his luck with Davis extending himself enough to push it wide of the right hand post. The cruel ebb was to come on 87 minutes as on the counter Padiham regained the lead, reward the 11 men did not deserve. Morris tried his luck from the left hand edge of the box and his effort wriggled under the body of Kay, taking all the pace off it, breaking kindly to Anthony Taylor who tapped home to break Town hearts and take all three points.

In Other News...... Record-breaking Sponsorship Run To End UniBond's record-breaking 17 year association with the Northern Premier League will end at the close of this season it was announced today. The league will start the 2010/11 season with new sponsors, following the decision by UniBond's parent company Henkel not to enter into a new agreement. Said Dave McCann, Henkel UK Marketing Director: “We have really valued our 17 year relationship with the Northern Premier Football League. The brand synergy was perfect and the support given to us from the NPL unparalleled. On top of that it provided us with the perfect interface with our consumers. “Having conducted a review of our brand communication strategy we have decided to realign our investments to more closely meet the needs of the business and of our end consumers". NPL chairman Mark Harris was pragmatic in his response to the news. "All good things come to an end, and we have known for some months that there was a possibility that our association with Henkel might conclude at the end of this season. With that in mind we put a strategy in place to approach prospective successors to UniBond, and a number of very positive discussions have already taken place. Vodkat League News ‘Castle Announce Two New Partnerships Newcastle Town Football Club have announced two new partnerships with local community groups. The club have set up a working Partnership with Staffordshire Youth Offending Service, and Gavin Appleby, Head Coach of the community project, explained: "This is an excellent opportunity to integrate what we offer at the football club into the wider community. This partnership is one we are proud to have, and will work with to improve opportunity for all". The link will allow players to attend the club's Saturday Morning club, where football coaching and games are provided on a weekly basis. In addition, Newcastle Town FC Community have announced that, in partnership with Staffordshire FA, they have now established a 'Disability Football Centre' that will be based at Newcastle College. Over the past few months, Gavin Appleby (Head Coach), Steve Wilmore (Development Manager) and Roger Whitehurst (Chairman) have been working closely with Staffordshire Football Association and Matthew Hancock to develop opportunities for disability football within the club. The 'Disability Football Centre' will run sessions which will take place on a Saturday morning at the college on the 3G facility, overseen by the Community section of the club. Club Secretary Ray Tatton said: "Newcastle Town is committed to the opportunity to provide football to all, regardless of backgrounds and past experience, and believes these working partnerships will provide more opportunity for the local youngsters of our community.

Saint’s Alive . . . A photographer visits a haunted castle hoping to take a picture of a ghost that is rumoured to reveal itself only once every hundred years. He sits in the dark clutching his camera until, just after midnight, a ghostly figure appears before him. It turns out to be friendly, and even agrees to pose for some snapshots. The photographer takes several pictures, then dashes home to develop them. To his dismay, he discovers that every shot has failed to come out. Only then does he realise that the spirit was willing, but the flash was weak. Lonely and desperate for some female company, a frog telephones the Psychic Hotline for a consultation to find out what his future holds. His personal psychic advisor takes his details and tells him, “You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you.” The frog is absolutely delighted. “Where will I meet her? At work? At a cocktail party?” he asks. “No,” replies the psychic. “In her biology class.” Stopping at a roadside cafe advertising ‘Unique Breakfasts’, a man asks the waitress what is so special about them. “It’s baked chicken tongues,” she tells him. “That’s disgusting,” says the man, grimacing. “I’d never eat anything that comes out of a chicken’s mouth,” “What do you want instead?” asks the waitress. “Just bring me a boiled egg,” he replies. A young lady enjoying a weekend break at a posh hotel decides to sunbathe on the roof. Seeing as she’s alone, she discreetly peels off her swimsuit in order to get an all-over tan. Within minutes, the hotel manager comes rushing up onto the roof, “Madam, please cover yourself,” he pleads. “But there’s no one else around, and I’m lying face down,” she says. “Yes, I know,” replies the manager. “And you’re on the dining room skylight.” One afternoon an elderly man enters a confessional and tells the priest, “I’m 82 years old, have a wonderful wife of 60 years, 5 children, 9 grandchildren and a great grandchild. This morning I picked up two female hitchhikers who thought I was kind of interesting. One thing led to another, and I ended up making love to both of them for two hours.” “You disgusting man,” says the priest, angrily. “Just what kind of Catholic are you?” “I’m not Catholic,” replies the man, “I’m Jewish.” The priest can hardly believe his ears. “Why are you telling me all this?” he demands. “I’m telling everybody,” replies the man.
