Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Bootle. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been a busy week for us at Brocstedes Park as this afternoons contest will be the third here in 8 days after almost three months without a contest here! We started off last Saturday when we hosted Abbey Hey. Town dominated the opening exchanges and deservedly took the lead after 25 minutes when an attack was half cleared by the Hey defence and broke to Sykes-Wright returning to the side after a lengthy injury lay off and he showed no signs of rustiness fining the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net from 25 yards. Further pressure should have seen the hosts extend their lead as Olsen should have marked his return to Town colours with a goal but his effort was cleared off the line by a defender and when Gillespie found Parish his diving header was saved by the visiting stopper. The second half belonged to the visitors from Manchester as they pushed Town back and the pressure told on 57 minutes when Jones levelled. It looked like the hosts were going to fold but top scorer Gillespie had other ideas on 70 minutes when Town regained the lead much against the run of play. Gillespie outmuscled his defender on the right wing before breaking into the box and firing home at the front post from close range to secure all three points for Town their first win in 2014. We then made the trip back here for Tuesday’s “visit” to Ashton Athletic a night which was to prove less than successful as we fell to a 6-2 reserve at the hands of out landlords. We started off poorly and went a goal down early before riding our luck and only conceding a 2nd shortly before the interval. We could have pulled one back just after the restart as Olsen missed a golden chance and to rub salt in the wound the hosts went up the other end and netted a third. We fell further behind and were five down before we mustered a slight revival as first an own goal reduced the arrears before a well taken goal from Gillespie made it 5-2 but the comeback was short lived as the hosted rounded off the scoring with a sixth. We must look to improve our performance for this afternoon’s contest against a Bootle side that have been in some fine form recently and indeed manager Joe Doran picked up the January Manager of the Month award after the club’s recent upturn in results. The Bucks will also be keen to avenge their 2-1 reverse in their home game in September which was our first win at Bootle’s new home. In Town Today . . . The original Bootle Football Club was formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. In the season 1889/90, the club became a founder member of the Football Alliance and managed to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they lost to Blackburn Rovers. When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite finishing a respectable 8th place, the club dropped out of he league after one season, were replaced by neighbours Liverpool FC and seemingly, disappeared. The current Bootle side were formed in 1953 as Langton FC, the side played at Edinburgh Park and dominated amateur football in the Liverpool area as members of the Liverpool Shipping League and subsequently the Liverpool County Combination until the mid seventies. The club was massively successful winning the County Combination on nine occasions, The Liverpool Challenge Cup three times, the Liverpool Amateur Cup three times and the George Mahon Cup six times. The club made the move to The Lancashire Combination in 1974 and finished a creditable third in their inaugural season. They followed this success but winning back to back championship in 1976 and 1977. Their final season in the Lancashire Combination saw them finish third again. In 1978 Bootle moved to Bucks Park the club joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which they won in their first season, and were promoted to the First Division. The “Bucks” spent three season in the First Division before in 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The club spent the next ten season as a member of the First Division until disaster struck in 1992 and they were relegated to the Second Division. The rebuilt side bounced straight back finishing Runners-Up to regain their rightful pace in the top fight of the North West Counties League. In their first season back they finished in a creditable sixth place and won their first silverware for 15 years when winning the League’s Floodlit Trophy. With the onset of money entering into the equation on an even greater scale Bootle found it hard to survive and with the loss of some key personnel, were unfortunately, merely delaying the inevitable for couple of seasons. They were finally relegated into the Second Division after a four year stay. The team had finished the season in 12th place but were relegated after failing a ground grading. Bootle bounced back again at the first time of asking as they gained from Chadderton, Warrington Town and Darwen failing their ground grading and after a 7th placed finish were promoted. Their stay lasted just two season’s and after struggling in both terms they were relegated. Another two seasons passed before they were to be relegated again on ground grading and after the loss of Bucks Park they returned to the Liverpool County Combination. A long and arduous trek then ensued to find a new home, whilst at the same time trying to keep the team functioning. Fifth & third place finishes whilst at the Dockers Club was promising and after a lot of hard work the club found themselves elected back in the North West Counties League in 2006.

. . . Bootle Football Club With the club now play housed at “New Bucks Park” in Vesty Road, Bootle. The first season back in the North West Counties League was one of consolidation and the team finished 10th in the 18 team division. They also re-entered the FA Vase for the first time in seven years but exited at the hands of Salford City. The 2007/8 season saw the club advance on all fronts with the club entering the FA Cup, again falling at the first hurdle in Manchester this time at Flixton. A run to the FA Vase 2nd round saw Bootle account for Padiham and AFC Emley before Winterton Rangers proved too strong for the Merseysiders. The cup runs continued as Bootle were runners up in both the Division 2 Trophy and the League Challenge Cup. In 2008/9 Bootle were crowned champions of the Division 1, beating Padiham in second place but seven points. An excellent FA Vase run saw them advance to the fourth round before being defeated by eventual winners Whitley Bay. 2009/10 saw a successful return to the top flight as they secured a third placed finish in the Premier Division. Bootle started the 2010/11 season looking to build on the previous terms achievements season but after a poor start to the season plagued by injuries and inconsistent form their realistic chances of challenging the front runners was gone by the festive season and they did well to recover and finish in a respectable 6th position. Last season saw them equal their third place finish of 2009/10 but they were never really in the title chase. The summer saw a change of direction as the club parted company with long time manager Chris O’Brien, appointing assistant Neil Prince in his place as they looked to build on last term and advance to the Evo-Stick league. Last term saw the Bucks in the title chase for most of the season but they ended up finishing in a disappointing 3rd place. The bright spot of the 2012/13 season saw them claim the Liverpool Senior Cup with a penalty shoot out win over AFC Liverpool. This season started off well put after a poor spell saw Neil Prince replaced by Joe Doran in the managerial hot seat at New Bucks Park. Season 1998-99

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Bootle FC. First of all may I thank and welcome today’s Executive Match Sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool and especially General Manager Gareth Shone who continues been extremely supportive of the club this season. We also thank today’s Match Ball sponsor Martin Thompson who is the Secretary of Kestrels FC of the Ormskirk Sunday and has been ’treated’ to his day at the game by his colleagues at Kestrels. Martin celebrates 40 uninterrupted years as Club Secretary - a fantastic achievement! We got back to winning ways last Saturday when the lads enjoyed a 2-1 victory over visitors Abbey Hey. Michael Sykes-Wright who was making a welcome return from injury scored Town’s opener but Abbey Hey levelled early in the second half but Andy Gillespie hit a fine solo effort to give Town the points. Unfortunately the joy was short lived as Tuesday night saw Town hit for six as our landlords Ashton Athletic registered a 6-2 win over Town here at Brocstedes Park. The Yellows were good value for their win showing a greater desire and application while Town were ‘off the pace’ for much of the 90 minutes. An own goal and another excellent effort from Gillespie were Town’s highlights. The club published the details of our End of Season Dinner this week - we will welcome guest speaker David Fairclough (ex Liverpool) and comedian Frankie Allen. Ashton Athletic Report . . . Town soundly beaten at Ashton Ashton Athletic 6-2 St Helens Town Tuesday 11th March 2014, NWCF League Premier Division Following Saturday’s win over Abbey Hey, St. Helens Town were hoping they had turned the corner, but found Ashton Athletic a different proposition in their “away” game at Brocstedes Park and after a poor performance, they went down to a disappointing 6-2 defeat. All six goals were conceded in a similar fashion, following alarming defensive failings and with their attackers struggling to produce anything to trouble the home side’s well-organised defensive line, the game was well over as a contest long before they rallied with a couple of consolation goals in the closing stages. Town turned out virtually the same eleven who had started against Abbey Hey, but they looked only a shadow of Saturday’s side and they went behind after just nine minutes, former Town player Phil Williams poking home after a series of defensive errors failed to clear the ball from the penalty area. Although they stemmed the flow to some extent, St. Helens rarely threatened their hosts for nearly all the first period and Ryan Small doubled Athletic’s lead in a similar fashion on 35 minutes. Three minutes later, Nathan Parish had a good chance for Town and player-coach Jay Foulds in the Ashton goal was grateful to take the sting out of a shot from over 25 yards out. Two goals behind at the interval, Andy Olsen had a great chance on the resumption, but he missed when it seemed easier to score whereupon another ex-St. Helens favourite, Adam Gilchrist, netted easily at the other end to take the game out of Town’s reach at 3-0 with only two minutes of the second half gone. Williams pounced again after 58 minutes after yet another defensive error, to put Ashton 4-0 up. At this point, St. Helens began to stir. Whether it was a case of saving face, or Ashton taking their foot off the gas, was not clear, but Andy Gillespie broke through on goal and momentarily a repeat of Saturday’s match winning goal seemed a possibility, but after beating several would-be tacklers, keeper Foulds anticipated the danger and, with the angle narrowed, Town’s leading scorer hit the shot just wide of the target. Shortly afterwards, a crisp pass from Adam Storey found fellow substitute Jamil Saleh in the box, with his back to goal, but turning sharply, he hit his shot just over the bar. Michael Sykes-Wright tested Foulds with a daisy-cutter reminiscent of his goal on Saturday, but the shot was well covered and from the resulting clearance, Athletic broke to the other end and scored again through Sam Bailey. 5-0 down, Town made a fight of it and a free-kick from Saleh found Ashton defender Luke Holden’s head and he deflected the ball past Foulds for an embarrassing own goal on 76 minutes, then with seven minutes remaining, Gillespie added a second following a barnstorming run past two defenders, rounding the keeper, to finish in style. However, hardly had the excitement died down, than Ryan Small netted again at the other end to bring the final score to 6-2. Glyn Jones

Town Youth News . . . In a fixture that was switched to St Helens Sports College at very short notice after the 'Dolly Blues' home venue was closed after a serious gas leak on Friday afternoon. Town were looking to bounce back from last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very unlucky 1-0 defeat at Vauxhall Motors with a squad strengthened with a number of new additions. The game couldn't have started any better when Ryan Coughlin persistence gave Town the lead after 2 minutes with a close range effort. The notion that this would lead to landslide victory was soon dispelled as Lancaster responded with spells of possession and some surging runs from deep and after 29 minutes it was one such 30 yard run that led to a foul on the edge of the Town penalty area. The swerving free kick was perfectly placed over the top of the Town wall giving 'keeper James Cope no chance. This prompted the right response from Town who forced a succession of attacks and corners one of which struck underside bar and just when you felt a second goal wasn't going to happen a great Ryan Coughlin through ball put top scorer Marcus Perry in on goal and his right foot shot hit the net from 15 yards - a great finish right on half time. With no changes at half time Town started where they had left off creating chances and went 3-1 up after 48 minutes with a good header by Kie Leyland from another well flighted corner. The lead lasted just four minutes as Lancaster roared back into the game and after a long range effort was pushed wide by Cope he was unable to prevent the resultant in swinging corner from going into the net for 3-2. With Henry Shaw replacing the injured James Bradbury and Matty Maddox on for Ryan Coughlin Town continued to create numerous chances to kill the game off but some good defending and hesitant finishing kept the game alive right to the final minutes. Town fully deserved the win and to be fair a final score of 3-2 wasn't a true reflection on the play but all credit to Lancaster who showed great character and possess some quality players so a good day all round after last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disappointing defeat. The squad is now looking much more powerful with more depth and with a bit of luck Town Youth can press on to secure a top four finish. Man of the Match: Chris Pye for a great all round performance at Centre Back but there were plenty of other good performances notably new additions Ryan Jones and Ben Currey who made very impressive debuts and another non-stop energetic display from Ryan Coughlin. A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place publicaccess AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought Combination Championship Trophy pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured from Wesley Bridge in 1972 below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

. . . Managers 1946-Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 200607 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 201213 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. NWCFL Club News . . . Congleton Town - the Bears have secured the signature of captain Scott Sephton on a two year contract. Manager Jim Vince said: "Scott's performances this year has warranted the club to secure his services. His all round game and attitude have been outstanding for a young player and I am delighted to have Scott on board".

Winsford United - Blues captain Jack Lane is all set to spend a season in the USA with Sacramento Republic FC, a club formed in 2012 that will be playing in the USL Pro Soccer League. Winsford boss Rob Byrne said: "Losing Jack is a massive loss and he won't be easy to replace given his form this season, though we are currently working hard to find a replacement". Formby - Squirrels captain Paul Speed is the first player to be inducted into the club's Centurions Club, which has been established to honour players who have made 100 competitive appearances. After making his debut in 2011-12 Paul has become a mainstay in the team, and as well as scoring 37 goals in 100 appearances, he was also team captain in 75 of the games. West Didsbury & Chorlton - a new 50 seater stand at Brookburn Road is set to be in use for the first time on Tuesday 18th March, for the home game against Runcorn Linnets. The stand will be located alongside the existing seating at the clubhouse end of the ground. Saturday 8th March 2014 Colne celebrated their 700th League game with a last gasp 4-3 win at Runcorn Linnets. Norton United's 3-2 victory at AFC Liverpool was their 200th League win, and their second goal scored by Lee Skellern was Norton's 800th League goal. Glossop North End's 2-0 win at Barnoldswick Town was the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 200th away League win. Michael Downing's consolation goal for Ashton Athletic in the 3-1 defeat at Winsford United was Athletic's 250th away League goal.

St Helens Town News . . . St Helens Town is delighted to announce the appointment of Alan Wellens a s Club P resident. Following the loss of Bert Trautmann and Bill Foulkes this year club officials had no hesitation in inviting Alan to take up the honorary position with immediate effect. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, “We lost two club legends with the passing of Bert and Bill this year. Bill had been club President since 2001 while Bert had rekindled his association with Town more recently, joining Bill as President in 2007. “The club felt it was an opportunity to recognise the important role Alan has played in the history of the club as a player and manager.” He added, “I wrote to Alan following our last committee meeting and I was delighted when he rang me to confirm his acceptance of the position and we are planning to meet up in the New Year.” Alan (pictured above in 1979, back row 3rd left) has a unique place in the club’s history - he holds the record for the most appearances in Town colours; was captain of the 1971-72 Lancashire Combination winning team and masterminded the club’s FA Vase success in 1987. Alan was honoured by St Helens Town as one seven ‘Elite’ players of the decades (1970s) since the club’s reformation in 1946. As a local boy in his mid-teens Alan made his St Helens Town debut at Great Harwood in 1966 alongside Jackie Atherton who as skipper made sure that the youngster ‘came to no harm’. Little did anyone realise that Alan would eventually succeed his mentor and become the first Town skipper to lift a trophy for over twenty years when he collected the Lancashire Football Combination Championship cup off Wesley Bridge in 1972 (pictured). Though he featured intermittently at first under boss Jimmy McKiernan, his Town playing career spanned the years 1966 to 1981 with just a brief season and a half at Darwen intervening in the 1970’s. Though records for the early part of this period are sketchy there is no doubt that Alan holds the record for St Helens Town appearances estimated at five hundred plus and he never gave less than one hundred per cent in any of them. Under his leadership Town also won the Watson Trophy and the Bass Charrington Cup in 1974, although he missed the final of the latter due to injury as his team-mates beat Darwen 4-3 thriller played at Burscough. That particular side was prolific indeed that year scoring 107 goals with Jackie Kendrick setting a club record of 46 goals which still stands to this day and though Alan Wellens’ job at right back was to defend, he did manage to get forward enough to bag a couple himself. In season 1975-76 Alan skippered Town in their new challenge in the Cheshire County League where he completed his playing career including the brief spell at Darwen. Sadly his playing days ended when back with Town he broke his leg in a league fixture against Hyde United at Hoghton in 1981 but having recovered, he took over the management of the team and took us to our most glorious day when winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987.

Town v Abbey Hey . . . Town return to winning ways St Helens Town 2-1 Abbey Hey Saturday 8th March 2014, NWCF League Premier Division St. Helens Town gained their first win since early December with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Abbey Hey at Brocstedes Park on Saturday, the winning goal coming against the run of play and proving to be the turning-point in a see-saw encounter. Chances were few and far between in the opening quarter on a tricky pitch, still heavy in places from the recent rains and the stiff breeze also affected the run of the ball. Town opened the scoring after 25 minutes when Michael Sykes-Wright put in a low drive from as many yards out, which seemed to catch visiting keeper John McIlwaine unsighted and the well-placed shot found its way in at the left-hand post. The home side might have increased their lead almost immediately when Andy Olsenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal-bound flick was cleared off the line by Josh Morrell with McIlwaine beaten and another opportunity saw Andy Gillespie, once again turning in a man-of-the-match performance, find Nathan Parish in a good position, but his header was saved by the goalie. St. Helens should have been well ahead at the break, but had to settle for a single-goal lead. The second half opened with Abbey Hey gaining control of the midfield and whether or not this was due to the home sideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s complacency, the breezy conditions or the uneven surface was not entirely clear. Certainly, the ball was not running for the Town side and the equaliser on 57 minutes had a feeling of inevitability. Goalkeeper Ciaran Gibson hoofed a goal-kick out of play on the half-way line and, from the resulting throw, the ball found its way quickly to Sam Jones who scored easily from the edge of the box. Abbey Hey had the better of nearly all the exchanges as the half wore on and, without a win in seven games, Town appeared to be losing their way. The Manchester side nearly took the lead on the hour when Tom Murray hit the bar with Gibson beaten. Out of the blue, however, Gillespie turned on his magic and, gaining possession near the corner flag, he dribbled past any number of defenders, right along the goal-line and, drawing McIlwaine on his near post, placed the ball in the back of the net from the narrowest of angles, on 70 minutes.

Abbey Hey produced only one effort on goal, Wes Harney’s shot rebounding off Gibson’s right-hand post straight into his arms as Jones ran in. Substitutes Jamil Saleh and Adam Storey replaced Olsen and Tom Lightbody, both of whom looked drained by the heavy pitch and it was Town who finished comfortably and they could have secured a more comfortable win had Parish’s 20-yard drive not cleared the bar by a matter of inches.
