Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this Liverpool Senior Cup, First Round Tie against our friends from Cammell Laird. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It’s a quick return to Brocstedes Park for us as we are back here after fighting out a 2-2 draw with an improving Stockport Sports outfit. We fell behind early on as a free kick into the box was not cleared and a deflection fell kindly for Paul Wadsworth to poke the ball home. The first half saw Town below par and struggling to string too many passes together but they bounced back to level matters when another set piece lead to the equaliser. The ball broke to skipper Lee Crompton on the far post and he belied his position as a Centre Half to chest the ball down and volley a thunderous strike more akin to a forward which gave the visiting stopper no chance. The visitors started the second half brightly but Town rode the storm and came back at them beginning to get on top in the contest and this culminated in them taking the lead just after the hour mark, former Stockport player Nathan Parish was able to latch onto a blocked effort after a series of shots from his colleagues and he fired the ball home to give the hosts a deserved lead. Town looked to add to their advantage with Andy Gillespie and Adam Storey having chances to put the game beyond the visitors but missing these chances was to cost the home side in the end as a pinpoint effort from Sam Pollard with his effort from the right of the area finding the back of the net via the inside of the left hand upright to see the sides share the spoils. We switch our attention from the bread and butter of league action to cup football as we enter the fray in the Liverpool Senior Cup at the First Round Stage. Our visitors are from the level above us, the Evo-Stik, Northern Premier League, First Division North and will come into the contest as favourites to advance to the next round. The come into the contest on the back of a 2-0 win at basement outfit Ossett Albion on Saturday afternoon and they currently sit in 16th position in the table, in a division of 22 teams. The visitors have already had an experience of playing a North West Counties League Premier Division club in cup competition this season as they went down 1-0 to Runcorn Linnets in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup at the end of September and more recently took the trip to Congleton Town in the Cheshire Senior Cup on Bonfire Night with the Evo-Stik outfit advancing into the next round thanks to a 5-4 penalty shoot out success after a 3-3 draw after 120 minutes. Should the scores be level in this evenings tie at 90 Minutes then the outcome of the tie will be decided by a penalty shoot out. Let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them onto victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Cammell Laird Football Club can trace its origins back to 1889 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Brothers (forerunners of the world famous shipyard whose name we carry to this day) played in Birkenhead Park under the name of Grange Football Club. However, the club soon changed to the rugby code and it was not until May1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute Association Football Club was established. Its headquarters were the Cammell Laird Institute in Conway Street, Birkenhead and matches were played on the old Prenton Park ground of Tranmere Rovers in the club colours of white shirts and blue shorts and socks and the club were admitted into the West Cheshire League in 1907. The first fixture was against Saltney Carriage Works and Lairds ran out 4-1winners with goals from Cobban, Walsh, a captain'sgoal from the penalty spot by Banton and Phillips finding the net. Despite difficult times the club finished a creditable 9th place. Following two poor seasons the club founder and Chairman Bill Elston was replaced, but due to industrial dispute at the time the club struggled to field a strong team and just avoided re-election. It soldiered on in mid table until the outbreak of World War 1 in August 1914, when many clubs disbanded and the League decided to amalgamate the two divisions. Resignations continued and as the end of the season drew near, the interest was reduced to a minimum, so much so that the surviving clubs failed to complete their fixtures because of the war effort, and as a consequence no medals were awarded. With the ending of the war, government orders for ships dried up consequently football was taken in-house with a departmental league of about 12 teams (affiliated to the Cheshire and Wirral Associations) and a representative team selected to compete in certain of the cup competitions of the Wirral Football Association. The club played their cup-ties on their old Park Road North ground with league games being played at Bebington Oval. The new Cammell Laird Departmental League commenced on September 20th, 1919 and on 7th May 1921, Lairds won their first ever Trophy by beating Laird Street Athletic 3-1 in the replayed final of the Shipley Cup at the Pool Bank enclosure with goals from Lees, Williams and Aitkin before a crowd of 2,000. In the summer of 1922, the team moved to the St Peters Road, Birkenhead, registered with the Birkenhead and District League 2nd Division and changed their name to Kirklands F.C. (The name of the original clubhouse). The club, staged it's first game on 27th September 1922 at St Paul's Old Boys, New Ferry with a 1-3 defeat, but ended the season in fifth position with 24points and were elected to Division 1.The club finished as runners up to Birkenhead Municipal despite only losing one match. Season 1924/5 saw a title play off against British Leather which Kirklands won 2-1 thanks to goals from Chapman (pen) and Wilson to be crowned champions. Kirklands also won the Wirral Minor ‘B’ Cup in 1924 and the Regent Cup in 1927 beating Cleveland Athletic 4-0 in front of some 2,000 spectators thanks to goals from Davies 2, Bevan (pen) and Hosie. Mid table positions were secured over the next four seasons but interest had begun to wane and by 1931/32 season the club had to go cap in hand to seek re-election which they gained. However by 1935/36 season the writing was on the wall with the team becoming the league whipping boys and Kirklands as a football club ceased before the start of the 1936/7 season.. At the commencement of the Second World War in September 1939 the club disbanded and the ground was badly damaged due to enemy action, this is unsurprising as the Cammell Laird Shipyard was one of the most prolific builders of warships for the Royal Navy.

. . . Cammell Laird FC In the summer of 1944, the club was re-formed as Cammell Lairds Association Football Club and joined the Birkenhead & Wirral Football League where it remained until .the summer of 1948 when the club was elected to Division 2 of West Cheshire League. Although silverware did not arrive at the club until 1969, in the next thirty plus years Lairds won the West Cheshire League 19 times, together with 5 Second Division championships, reached the Quarter-Finals of the FA Vase in the season 1994-95 but have since bettered that by reaching the Semi-finals in 2005-06. After making the decision to attempt to climb the non league football pyramid, in season 2005-06 'The Lairds' made history by becoming the first team to win the championship of the second and first divisions of the North West Counties League in successive seasons. In addition, Cammell Laird won the North West Counties league Second Division Trophy and League Challenge Cup, furthermore in their first two seasons in the NWCFL, scoring over 250 league goals in the process. The 2006-07 season saw Lairds make their bow in the UniBond Northern Premier League Division One which saw Lairds finish in second place behind Buxton and they were desperately unlucky not to gain promotion at the first time of asking after losing in the play off final. Lairds finally gained promotion to the UniBond Premier Division in 2007-8 when second place was awarded the one automatic promotion place. The Unibond Premier League season threw up all sorts of challenges for Lairds, after a tough start, Manager Ken McKenna and the club agreed to go separate ways and Lairds defender Derek Ward was brought in as Manager with Ian Cooke as his assistant. After a long tough season Lairds finished one place above the relegation places despite having beaten most of the top six teams, however a ground grading technicality saw Lairds relegated to the Unibond League Division One South. Having had a prolific period of success with rises through the various leagues being achieved, the club had in effect over achieved and the next few seasons saw 'Lairds' struggle both on and off the field. Our 2011/12 season saw the club struggle from the start of the season, and Lairds were never out of the relegation zone, despite the best efforts of manager Tony Sullivan. 'Lairds' finished bottom of the league and had to seek re-election to stay in the now EvoStik North which was confirmed in May 2012. The 2012/13 saw an incredible turn around from the previous season, as Lairds finished league Runners up, with 86 points, but fell just short of promotion losing on penalties in the final to Trafford. Lairds also enjoyed some Cup success with matches against FC United and FC Halifax and a great league cup run enjoying victories against Premier sides, Kendal an, Chorley, before losing in the semi final to premier side champion elect North Ferriby. Jamie Henders scored 36 goals take the scoring plaudits, but goals came from all over the squad and a great team spirit saw them win games late on. Tony Sullivan side goes into the 2013/14 season on a high and with high expectations from all concerned.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this Liverpool County FA Senior Cup 1st Round encounter with our friends and rivals Cammell Laird FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own followers are treated to an entertaining game. Many thanks to Jim McDonald and Zenith Global IT Solutions who are the Executive Match Sponsors for this evening’s game and for our remaining home games this season. This sponsorship deal is a huge boost to the club and we are delighted to partner with Jim and Zenith. Saturday saw Town pick up a point courtesy of a 2-2 home draw with Stockport Sports. The visitors took an early lead but Town levelled before half time courtesy of a fine strike from captain Lee Crompton. Nathan Parish put Town ahead midway through the second period but the Saxons hit back with 8 minutes remaining to secure a point. Goals from Craig Cairns and Jamie Henders gave Lairds a 0-2 win at Ossett Albion at the weekend, their first league victory since early October when they secured a 2-1 home win over Burscough. Lairds currently lie in 16th place in the Evo-stick Division 1 North with 19 points (5 wins, four draws) from 18 games. Town Reserves maintained top spot in the West Cheshire League Division 3 with a 0-6 win at Upton AA Reserves. On Sunday the Youth Team took three points in a 2-1 home victory over Atherton Town, Will Tabern and Marcus Perry with the goals - a selection of photos are in tonight’s programme with more on the club website. Saturday sees Town travel to West Didsbury and Chorlton who have been in decent form recently. Last Saturday they defeated leaders Runcorn Town 1-0 at Brookburn Road. Disappointingly we have had to postpone our forthcoming Comedy Night because of poor ticket sales and this has now been rescheduled for Saturday 8th February 2014. I apologise for any inconvenience caused. Enjoy the game. John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

Town v Stockport Sports . . . Eleven league games unbeaten for Town St Helens Town 2-2 Stockport Sports Saturday 23rd November 2013 North West Counties League Premier Division Without a competitive game for nearly a month, St. Helens Town fought out a battling 2-2 draw at home to Stockport Sports at Brocstedes Park on Saturday, extending their unbeaten run in league games to eleven, ahead of back-to-back away games at West Didsbury & Chorlton on Saturday next and Wigan Robin Park the following Tuesday evening. A draw was perhaps a fair result overall, but Town will be kicking themselves for not having sewn up the three points well before Stockport equalised with nine minutes to go. St. Helens got off to a bad start. A contentious free-kick awarded to the visitors in the third minute caused a mix-up in the Town defence and the ball bounced off Shaun Judge’s leg, wrongfooting keeper Ciaran Gibson and centre-half Paul Wadsworth poked home the rebound from close range. Stockport went on to dominate most of the early play and, in an isolated opportunity for Town, Andy Gillespie’s shot on 12 minutes was saved by visiting stopper Richie Torkington at his near post. The game swung Town’s way after 25 minutes when, from a corner, Shaun Judge back-headed the ball to skipper Lee Crompton, who was unmarked on the corner of the penalty box and the centre back let fly with a wonderful strike which beat Torkington all ends up. Judge had to leave the field with a shoulder injury soon afterwards, but St. Helens were well on top and they had chances to take a half-time lead, but were wasteful in attack. Town started the second-half in much the same fashion and after 62 minutes, Nathan Parish got his just rewards for a solid performance when he followed up a number of ricochets to prod the ball past Torkington from 10 yards. The home forwards were dominating the match, with Adam Storey, Danny Owens and Mason Ryan all having chances. Torkington was leading a charmed life in the visitors’ net and the best opportunities fell to Gillespie and Storey, who twice had opportunities to wrap up the points. As it turned out, Sports’ substitute Sam Pollard turned the game on its head when he rifled home from 25 yards out on the right, his fierce shot beating Gibson in the air and going in off the left-hand post. Both sides had chances to win the match in the closing stages and Pollard in particular could have grabbed a winner in the last few minutes, but the Town defence and Gibson in particular kept him at bay and the point gained left Town in tenth place in the Premier League table, just on the heels of a group of clubs, six of whom have played more games than St. Helens. This represents a vast improvement on last season’s achievements, as they currently have 28 points from 19 games, whereas it took 38 games to amass the same number of points last time around. Where are we now? Something that always makes me smile is when a club from our League gains promotion to the Northern Premier League and then someone claims on their website that their club is now playing at its highest level ever. In most cases, the truth is that those clubs are still playing well below their highest ever level. The problem comes from the way things have changed over the last 35 years or so. Back at the tail end of the 70’s there was no official pyramid, but like the entire history of football, there was an unofficial one. If you go back to 1949/50 when St Helens Town competed in the Lancashire Combination Division Two, they were playing at what is now Conference North level. The top clubs in the Lancashire Combination applied directly to the Football League for membership, it was one of the Leagues at the top level of non league football (no Northern Premier League back then). Even at the start of the 1980’s when St Helens were in the Cheshire County League and then the North West Counties League Division One, above them was just a single division Northern Premier League and a single division Conference League, putting them at what is now Step 3, NPL Premier Division level. Of course, since then, the NPL has added a second division and then the Conference League added their Division One North above us, each one pushing us down a level meaning that we and other clubs who played alongside us and still do, such as Winsford, Congleton and Glossop are now playing two divisions lower than we were in the mid-80’s without being relegated! With all that in mind, has the non-league pyramid benefitted clubs or supporters? With St Helens playing at what is now Step 2 and Step 3 levels up until the mid 80’s, supporters were able to watch a high standard of football in and around the North West for little cost. Now in Step 2 you have Oxford City playing Workington and Barrow, a round trip of 568 miles and 492 miles respectively. Colwyn Bay have a few 6 or 7 hour round trips. If St Helens were at Step 2 now, this season, they would have a total of 4,242 miles to travel in round trips just in the League. In Step 3 you have to travel all over the north of England from Birmingham upwards. If St Helens were in the NPL Premier Division now, they would have total round trips of 3.064 miles for League games. Taking a season at random, 1985/86 when St Helens were at Step 3 in the NWCL Division One, they had a total of 1,408 worth of round trip miles. Only three clubs gave us more than a 100 mile round trip. So, up until the mid-80’s, St Helens Town supporters could watch Step 2 or Step 3 standard football, just in and around the North West meaning low cost for supporters and clubs alike and enabling part time players to play for their local clubs at a high standard. You may not think that’s an issue, but if you watch local football, for example in the West Lancs League, there are players there who have either played in the NPL or could easily do so, but they choose to play in a local League because of their job or family commitments. They don’t want the long travelling time. It was clear that changes were needed in non league football, but does massively increasing costs to clubs and supporters as well as the hugely increased travelling time, seem the right way to go? Would you rather the NWCL was still at Step 3 or are you happy to travel all over north England? Tim Lees

A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place publicaccess AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story. “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and

. . . Our Charity Partner players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.” Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals campaign as their official charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a a Race Night on Saturday 26th October and Comedy & Curry Night on Saturday 7th December. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at sthelenstownafc@gmail.com Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in midterm. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing Combination Championship Trophy career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in from Wesley Bridge in 1972 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall

. . . Managers 1946-Present (pictured below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 19932002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - present Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

Trautmann Tribute . . . The Bert Trautmann Memorial game between St. Helens Town and Manchester City last Sunday at Prescot Cables’ Valerie Park ground was a fitting tribute to the former German goalkeeping legend, who began his career with St. Helens Town 65 years ago. He died in July, at the age of 89 years, but members of his family, supported by former team mates from both clubs joined a crowd of over 400 for a memorable game of football, played in the best spirits of the game. Both teams and officials joined Bert’s family and the Mayor of St. Helens, Andy Bowden, in a minute’s silence in memory of the great man, the mark of respect extended also to former Saints’ legend Steve Prescott. The kick-off was performed by Bert Trautmann’s understudy, Steve Fleet. For the record, St. Helens Town ran out 54 winners in an open contest. Both teams were supported by several guest players. Town’s goals were scored by current centre-forward Adam Storey, who netted twice, and former Accrington Stanley manager, John Coleman, who scored three, also taking the man-of-the-match award. Town raced into a 4-0 lead, Coleman ably supporting the home side’s youthful attack. Former City goalkeeper, Eric Nixon, pulled off two great saves from Storey inside the first ten minutes, but he had no chance when Storey crossed for Coleman to open the scoring on the quarter-hour. Four minutes later, Jimmy Bell put Storey clear 40 yards out and he netted the second, despite Nixon’s best efforts. A few minutes later, Storey scored his second, when he mopped up a loose ball close home, but the goal of the game came on 32 minutes. Ste Milne was unceremoniously blocked off the ball by Andy Morrison and Coleman scored a beautiful free kick from 40 yards out. Even Trautmann in his prime would not have saved that one. Young Ciaran Gibson in the home goal turned in a faultless display in the first half to keep City’s old boys at bay. Unfortunately, Gibson played the second half up front and Town Secretary Jeff Voller deputised between the sticks. Whether he was instructed to let City back into the game will remain a mystery, but he was beaten four times as City fought back with goals from Andy Morrison (2), Steve Redmond and Town’s own Danny Owens, but Town ran out 5-4 winners thanks to Coleman’s third goal. Eric Nixon’s son, Eric junior, had a great second half in the City net and there were good contributions throughout from Neil Pointon, Peter Barnes and Andy Reid. Net proceeds from the match will be divided between three charities, namely Hearts and Goals, the Bert Trautmann Foundation and the Mayor of St. Helens’ designated charity, the Saints Community Development Foundation. Back to Business . . . Well, its cup action tonight as our Liverpool Senior Cup campaign gets underway and hopefully we can have an extended run in this competition after falling at the first hurdle in three previous cup competitions this season. To do so however, we must negotiate a stiff test this evening as we welcome our visitors from the Evo-Stik Division One North. This past Saturday saw us return to competitive action after almost a month following a number of postponements due to adverse weather. Whilst we looked a little rusty at times we battled out a hard fought 2-2 draw with a resilient Stockport sports side, however at 2-1 up we should have taken advantage of our dominance and had numerous chances to kill the game off. Nevertheless, the unbeaten league run has been extended to 11 games and there were positives to be taken from the game. Debutant Mason Ryan had a patchy game but at times showed promise, whilst a return to first team action for club captain Lee Crompton was a welcome boost with big Lewis Coyle missing at the heart of our defence through illness, and the skipper capped off a solid performance with a goal. All in all, taking into consideration the long period of inactivity a draw was a fair result on the day and hopefully we shook off a few cobwebs ahead of tonight’s tough encounter. Away from the pitch, plans continue to develop for our end of season dinner, our return to the borough of St Helens and the clubs future development and despite a few setbacks in recent weeks with the departure of our Reserve team manager and the unavoidable postponement of the clubs comedy and curry night, things are looking bright for the future of the club and if the momentum continues both on and off the pitch it should be a successful campaign all round. This evening’s visitors make the short trip from the Wirral off the back of a 2-0 away win at Ossett Albion on Saturday and currently sit in 16th place in the Evostik North table.
Liverpool Senior Cup
It will be a hard fought encounter but one I believe is not beyond us if we put in a strong performance and hopefully come 9.45pm we will have booked our place in the next round. Enjoy the game and have a safe journey home afterwards. Darryl Picton Commercial Manager St Helens Town AFC.
