Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Congleton Town. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at Edge Green Street, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. After all the games we have crammed into the last 5 or 6 weeks it has seemed like a long time between matches as we have had to wait a full week to follow up last Saturday’s 0-0 draw at AFC Blackpool with this afternoon’s contest against Congleton Town. The last time we were here at Edge Green Street was 10 days ago as we hosted Bacup Borough after a even first half probably shaded by Town but some suicidal defending in the second half saw Town concede two goals on the counter attack and shy of a late consolation from Chris Williams the game was over as a contest. Last Saturday saw us take a second trip to Blackpool in two weeks as we visited AFC Blackpool and on the balance of the game we deserved at least a draw as after a first half in which neither side trouble their respective goalkeeper the second half saw Town camped on the edge of the Blackpool area for large periods and but for the home stopper having a good game an being denied a stonewall penalty we would have come away from The Mechanics Ground with all three points. This afternoon sees us in for another difficult contest as Congleton will be looking to break their recent spell of patchy form but will always be dangerous with two of the top scorers in the league in their ranks in Chris Smith and Mike Koral. We need to ensure that we build on last weeks clean sheet and improved defensive performance and look to claw our way out of the drop zone. On a final note massive congratulations must go to Rob Walker, Ant Dunne and all the Youth Team squad who secured a place in their League Cup Final with a 3-1 victory over local rivals Ashton Athletic last Sunday they will now take on Bolton Wyersdale here at Edge Green Street on Sunday 21st April in the Final. In Town Today . . . Events which led to the formation of Congleton Town Football Club, began in the 1890’s, the St James’ North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop. They played on West Heath before housing was built in that area, and then became Congleton Hornets Football Club. The Hornets played at the Willow Street ground famed in Congleton, and competed in the South Cheshire League and recorded its’ record league win, 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season. Congleton Town Football Club succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, the first three of which saw the club lift the League Championship. The Club then moved into the North Staffordshire League in 1905, and won the League Championship in the 1919/20 season. The following year they joined the Cheshire County League, regarded at the time as the best League outside the Football League. The following season they finished runners-up and won the coveted Cheshire Senior Cup in their first appearance in the Final. The Club then suffered a barren spell until the Senior Cup was won again in 1938. Success after the War did not descend on Booth Street until the 1971/72 season when the Club, now playing in the Mid-Cheshire League, won the League Cup after being runners-up in the League both that season and in the previous season. Three Mid-Cheshire League Championships then came to Booth Street in the 1973/74, 1975/76 and 1977/78 seasons, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday Cup. Although this was the most successful period of the Club’s history as regards silverware, the truly successful period began in the 1981/82 campaign, when the Second Division of the Cheshire County League was gained on the last game of the season, and Town were narrowly beaten to the Cup by Macclesfield Town. That was the last season of the Cheshire County League before the North West Counties League came into existence. As founder members of this new League, Congleton finished the first three campaigns in mid-table and then were narrowly beaten to the Championship by Clitheroe on goal difference in the 1985/86 season. The Club then had its, application to join the Northern Premier League rejected, but joined the higher league when the First Division of the NFL was formed in 1987. The highlight of the 1989/90 season was to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Although beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra, that achievement re-kindled local interest in the Club upon which its management hoped to build. The Final of the NPL’s First Division Cup was also reached in this season, but the “Bears” were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Harrogate Town. The “Bears” enjoyed exciting times in the First Division, initially finishing in mid-table but then, playing to avoid relegation as the seasons come to a close. Between 1993 and 1997 a new Board of Directors brought financial and managerial stability to the Club, whilst the present Directors aim to continue this work and improve the Club’s fortunes in the years ahead. The club had a good season in 1999/2000 but fell away badly the following year. Despite reaching a best ever 4th Round of the FA Trophy before defeat by Worksop Town, they struggled badly in the league. The club appointed Sean Connor as manger in February 2001 but he could not prevent them finishing bottom of the UniBond League and relegation became a reality. The early season of 2001/02 saw the club take just 9 points from 17 league matches and early exit from FA Cup and FA Vase. Sean Connor was replaced as manager by Kevin Langley, ex Everton and Man City. The club made a fine revival and had reached virtual safety before Langley’s shock move to Kidsgrove Athletic. Bryan Griffiths took over as manager and gained the points to make safety a certainty and stake a strong claim to keep the manager’s job. He was formally appointed at the end of the season. Gary Bickerstaffe joined him as assistant and in September 2002 he invited Kevin Langley to return as a player and to help with coaching. When Griffiths left to join Rossendale Utd, Kevin Langley was re-appointed as manager and Mark Cox joined to complete an experienced management team.

. . . Congleton Town Football Club Off the field the club continued to enjoy growing support from sponsors and steady improvements in its facilities, culminating with the signing of a two-year deal with Macclesfield based SSG Group of Companies during the summer of 2003. During the summer of 2002, the clubhouse underwent major refurbishment and is seen by the club as a major step towards increasing its revenue potential. The changing facilities were redesigned and upgraded. The team reached the fifth Round of the FA Vase, beat three higher league sides in reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, the semi-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup and the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. In all cup competitions other than the FA Cup, only the eventual finalists beat the Bears. With promotion missed, a number of players left the club in the summer of 2004 leaving Kevin Langley with the task of rebuilding the side for the 2004/05 campaign. After a poor start and early exits from all major cup competitions, Karl Wilcox replaced Kevin Langley after he resigned in November 2005. In a further twist in an already difficult season, Karl Wilcox resigned after 11 defeats in 12 games. Paul Moore was appointed for the remainder of the season and he guided the team to safety before confirmation of his appointment signalled the start of rebuilding of a side aiming to challenge for honours. 2005/06 started brightly with SSG adding a third year to its already valuable sponsorship, but swift exits from cup competitions were a disappointment. After many changes in personnel, the team settled to end the season with a creditable run in that held promise for 2006/07. The start of a football academy for 6-15 year olds and the introduction of a reserve side were positive steps to help build the teams of the future. 2006/07 saw new sponsors STD Limited, part of the Pallex network, entering a 2-year deal which they then extended a further year. The supporters trust provided kit for the reserve team. After a steady start to the 2006/07 campaign, Paul Moore left to manage Leek Town and Andy Lee took over the managerial reins as the club strived to maintain continuity. The Bears lifted their first piece of silverware for some time when they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup after defeating Witton Albion 3-0 at Wincham Park. At the end of the season Andy Lee stepped down as he announced a proposed move to Blackpool and Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg were appointed with the task of rekindling the on-field performances. Off the field new floodlights were installed and the stand behind the bottom goal was re-roofed. After a reasonable season, despite a poor final run in, both Anthony and Darren stayed with the club and continued to build a side with promotion the target within the next couple of years. That plan was maintained in 2008/09 as the Bears ended a creditable 4th, just 1 point away from a 3rd place finish. A final run in of just 1 league defeat in the last 20 matches encouraged everyone. With two new key local businessmen, Nick Shatwell and Martin Lenton teaming up to add impetus to the club’s ambition, significant development of the clubs facilities were started. A redesigned entrance, turnstiles and car park were the first step. Refurbishment of the club house followed and tarmac has been laid in the car park. For the start of 20010/11 the club now has a hospitality suite for sponsors and a new boardroom. With Ant and Twiggy remaining at the helm, they have been busy strengthening the squad for a serious attempt to lift some silverware and to complete the ambition for a return to Northern Premier League football. However, after an indifferent season in 2010/11 the pair tendered their resignation. 2011/12 saw the club jointly managed by Joe Paladino and Adriano Rigoglioso. Assisted by Joe Gibiliru, the playing side were completely reformed but indifferent results led to Dean Sibson placed in temporary charge in early November before Jim Vince was appointed in February 2012. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division game against our visitors Congleton Town FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. We are now entering the final few weeks of the League campaign and after today’s encounter we have a dozen fixtures remaining in which to secure our Premier Division status. Games are now coming thick and fast, following a free mid-week we now have four games in eight days. Tuesday evening sees us travel south to Alsager Town and Thursday evening we make the much shorter trip to AFC Liverpool at Valerie Park (home of Prescot Cables) while next Saturday we take on Squires Gate here at Edge Green Street. Our last two games have seen mixed performances with Bacup Borough running out 1-2 winners on a bitterly cold night - Chris Williams hit a late goal while Lee Crompton headed narrowly over in the dying moments as we pushed to level the game. Last Saturday’s game at AFC Blackpool saw a less than memorable first half from both teams with neither keeper tested. The second half was a much better game and Town will feel that they had enough chances to have secured all three points. There was disbelief among the players and supporters when the referee failed to award a penalty kick after Charlie Stoker was hauled to the ground with only the ‘keeper to beat mid way through the second half. Glyn Jones’ match reports for these games are elsewhere in today’s programme. ‘The Bears’ have had mixed fortunes recently and before Tuesday night’s postponed game against Stockport Sports they had recorded three draws and three defeats in six games which included a 3-2 reverse at Glossop last Saturday; a game which had seen the Cheshire outfit 0-2 up in the first half! Congratulations to the St Helens Town Youth team who progressed to the final of the North West Youth Alliance League Cup with an excellent 3-1 victory over Ashton Athletic Youth last Sunday afternoon at Bobbies Lane. Rob Walker and Ant Dunne’s team will now meet Bolton Wyresdale on Sunday 21st April , 2pm here at Ashton Town. Hopefully we can get some good support for the lads on the day. St Helens Town v Bacup Borough. . . Tuesday 5th March 2013 North West Counties Football League Premier Division St Helens Town 1-2 Bacup Borough St. Helens Town went down to a fourth successive defeat to an uncompromising Bacup Borough side at Edge Green Street last Tuesday evening, but it took two goals from David Grey to set the Lancashire Cup finalists on their way midway through the second half and Town only just fell short of a point in the dying stages. The first half was an even contest, both sides having their chances. Lee Crompton had the ball in the back of the net after 11 minutes, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Cole Ashton headed over six minutes later and on the half-hour Charlie Stoker was through on goal, only to see his shot put out by the grateful Bacup keeper Jones for a corner. Phil Williams was brought down following a burst after 33 minutes, but Crompton could only head over from the resultant free-kick. The best chance of the half came with only a couple of minutes remaining, Phil Williams producing another 40-yard burst before Stoker’s powerful shot was turned behind for another corner, from which Ste Edwards nearly scored. Scoreless at the break, Bacup assumed control of the game in the second-half. Chances for Town were few and far between, the only two falling to Stoker and Edwards, before the visitors went the length of the field and Grey slotted home on the counter attack after 63 minutes. St. Helens had a rare chance on 77 minutes, but Mark Pye hit a free-kick narrowly wide. In a repeat of the first goal, however, Bacup once again broke on the counter and it was Grey again who found the net to put the visitors 2-0 up. The closing stages were dominated by Town and, on 90 minutes, Chris Williams scored from a tight angle to give the home side hope and there were further half chances in added time before the same player headed agonisingly wide just ahead of the final whistle. The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.
Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Photographs: Above Tommy O’Neil holding aloft the FA Vase in 1987. Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Why do we get involved . . . Why do people get involved with a non-league football club? At a time when there are so many other attractions (or distractions) away from non-league football why is it that people get involved, or remain involved with football at our level? When I travel around to games I meet people and recognise others who have been with their respective clubs as players, supporters or officials for many years – some even crossing the ‘divide’ and joining the committee having been a player or long time supporter. Having said that, players remaining at a club and eventually joining the board or committee are probably less common in the modern era than in times gone by! On our various journeys around the North West my fellow car-sharers have discussed the issue of ‘professional’ committee men or women who have each plied their trade at a number of different clubs in an area. Sometimes this follows the demise of a club, in other instances officials simply move-on to pastures new. The latter is something I’ve always found strange and while people often have the skills which are much needed by clubs surely you have got to be a supporter first – or maybe not? We’ve even discussed the question ‘if our cub folded, could you join another?’ The answer for me is no, for others it might be different. My own connection with St Helens Town harks back to primary school and a friend of mine Karl Ashton took me to the old ‘Town Ground’ at Hoghton Road as his mum was the assistant stewardess in the social club and Saturday afternoons saw us act as ball boys. At the end of the game we would wait patiently outside the boardroom for Chairman Joe Jones to hand over 50p – a decent sum in the mid 1970’s. I must admit as a 9 or 10 year old I don’t recollect much about any of the football of the time and I could never have imagined that my association with the club would continue some 30 plus years on. Although my secondary school years passed without any real involvement at Hoghton Road, my association would return as an 18 year old (in 1984) when I started work behind the bar in the social club. By this time my family had moved to Hoghton Road so I was only a short walk from the ground! Over the next couple of years I would watch games on a regular basis while the bar was quiet on a Saturday afternoon, returning for the half time and full time drinks rush. Eventually I would do the same on Tuesday evenings when floodlit football came to Sutton a few seasons later. Of course 1987 saw the epic FA Vase run and for those of us who remained in the clubhouse (I was working) after the semi-final first leg defeat to Emley I will never forget how packed the club was with people having to stand on the stage with seats and floor space at a premium. For anyone who ever went to the Town Ground social club you will remember the sheer size of the function room which could accommodate five or six hundred people with relative ease. The FA Vase first leg defeat was heroically overturned and I went on one of the many coaches that left for Wembley on Saturday 25th April 1987, remarkable not only for the win over Warrington Town but by the time we got back late on Saturday night I was able to start to celebrate my 21st birthday which was the following day! My first ‘official’ involvement with the football club came when I was asked would I assist with the club’s match programme, something I have done for some NWCFL Premier Division Season 20112011-12 Programme of the Year

. . . with a non-league football club? twenty plus years and still do today. My workplace at the time (Parr High School) had some decent printing facilities and my graphic design training came in handy when I eventually took over the role of programme editor around 1990. In the intervening two decades it has thankfully become much easier to create our match programme artwork and gone are the days of tippex, scissors and pritt-stick. Like most people with any lengthy involvement with a non-league football club I have experienced many tasks having been Secretary, Treasurer, Trustee, Vice-Chairman and for the past few years Chairman. In reality the ‘titles’ mean nothing and I still collect and drop off kit at the laundry, collect programmes on match-days, organise the club’s 500 Club Draw and help with any of our sponsorship and fundraising activities. I when I can’t do these someone is always there to step into the breach and pick up my ‘jobs’ as well as complete their own! That’s the nature of our club and many others – thankfully. What makes us do it? To be honest I am not really sure, in my case I sometimes feel it’s a job I love and I don’t want to give up! Don’t get me wrong there are many occasions when I could do without the hassle but these are far outweighed by the good days even taking into consideration results on the field. I have always said I am a Town supporter first and foremost. We all want our clubs to be successful and the measure of this could be simply survival or contesting silverware. I am sure that all those people actively involved in running their clubs feel that their contribution however large or small goes some way to helping them achieve their goals. Experience tells me that this is the case! There are lots of people around the league who have been with their clubs for many, many years and one of our concerns has to be the lack of new blood joining clubs to replace those who have served their time (not in a custodial sense, although I am sure to some it feels like that). At Town we have seen a steady growth in our committee in recent years and although still not huge in number I am hopeful it has the energy to continue to develop the club for the foreseeable future – keeping our fingers crossed, like all clubs, that new faces are attracted who will eventually occupy the various official roles. Back to the original question ‘Why do people get involved in a non-league football club?’ In simple terms the vast majority of us are fans of football and of our respective teams. Some will have been taken to a game by a friend, been prompted by a match poster or seen the website, spotted a match report in the local paper, been taken by their dad, watched a mate or family member play – or any host of other reasons. Being a supporter is one thing and we all wish we had more. However, the step from supporter to helper to committee can be a lengthy process or in some instances a quick one. For many the relationship with our club starts as ‘selling some raffle tickets’ or ‘helping put the nets up’ and before you know it you’ve been sucked in and 25 years have passed by! I am sure that no one person’s journey is the same as another and each of us has a different reason for doing what we do and remaining with our club. What do we get from it? A load of grief and ear ache; definite worries about the lack of money, poor results, freezing hands and feet throughout the winter months are just some of the negatives. On the plus side – the enjoyment of a win on match-days (hopefully), a laugh and a chat with mates of all ages, opportunity to go to new places and meet new people and the satisfaction of continuing to support and develop a club that without our efforts might not exist! AFC Blackpool v St Helens Town . . . Saturday 9th March 2013 North West Counties League Premier Division AFC Blackpool 0-0 St Helens Town St. Helens Town earned a valuable point on Saturday, with a goalless draw at AFC Blackpool’s Jepson Way ground, but it should have been three points. Charlie Stoker, Town’s 16-year old striker, was wrestled to the ground in the penalty area with a tackle any of the Saints’ forwards would have been proud of yet, unaccountably, referee Ian Gittins, failed to penalise the obvious infringement and Town were left with a 0-0 draw to reward their efforts, which lifts them level on points with fellow strugglers Squires Gate, but with two precious matches in hand ahead of their “six-pointer” at Edge Green Street on 23rd March. Both teams were depleted by injuries and illness and the first half was totally forgettable as a spectacle. However, within three minutes of the re-start, St. Helens went on the attack and produced three good chances, two of which fell to Phil Williams. Unfortunately, he hit both shots narrowly wide of, first, the right post, then the left. Sandwiched in between, Lee Crompton’s header from a corner landed on top of the home net. The game drifted along in a midfield stalemate for 15 minutes before Danny Wright hit a shot wide from 25 yards, but then Stoker set to work and he tormented the Blackpool defence with a series of mesmerising runs, any of which on another day might well have produced a goal. AFC Blackpool simply could not handle him, other than in a literal sense. He was unlucky not to be given a free kick on 65 minutes when blatantly shoved off the ball just outside the penalty area but, three minutes later, he was brought down unceremoniously by the centre-back Vaughan, already on a yellow card, right under the referee’s nose with the home keeper clearly at sixes and sevens, in as clean cut a penalty decision one is ever likely to see. A minute later, Stoker went through again on the goalie, but could not find the net from a tight angle and keeper O’Boyle smothered the shot. . . . Match Report and Photos remaining, Cole Ashton made a great break down the left wing, passed to Stoker, but he could only find the side netting. Shortly afterwards, Stoker again saw his headed effort saved by O’Boyle, this being Town’s last chance to snatch a winning goal. As the dying minutes ebbed away, the Fylde side had only a couple of half-chances, both well covered by the St. Helens defence, until they threw everything but the proverbial kitchen sink at Lee Novak in the last ten minutes to try to break the deadlock. Congleton are the visitors to Edge Green Street on Saturday, with away trips to Alsager on Tuesday and AFC Liverpool (at Prescot Cables’ ground) on Thursday, to come before the Squires Gate showdown on Saturday week.
